Proximas News from Stevey...

Pasion y poder begins airing IN MEXICO on October 5th, in the 9:30 slot after Lo Imperdonable. Lo Imperdonable fans back in the States who may be wondering how many episodes you have left up there can take note that last nights episode down Mexico way was number 108. So, take todays date and count up from 108 until October 5th and then you'll have your answer.

Casting has already been noted here, but I can provide a bit more detail in that Michelle Renaud will be playing the daughter of Jorge Salinas' 'Arturo' (galan) and Marlene Favela's 'Nina' (villana). Fabiola Guajardo is also in it... from what I understand her character is the best friend of lead heroine Susana Gonzales. Likewise Altair Jarabo who (for once) is NOT playing a villain, and Ecuadorian actor Danilo Carrera is the youth galan, in the role of villain Fernando Colunga's son..

The promo videos for this one look kick-ass (Marlene Favela in particular looks like a villana to die for). Here's a link to the most recent (and best).

Simplemente Maria is also now filming in earnest, as has been noted. It premieres down Mexico-way on November 9th in the 4:15 spot, after Amor de Barrio. Here's more information as to the cast and the characters they're going to be playing:

Claudia Alvarez - Maria (heroine)
Ferdinando Valencia- Cristobal (galan 1)
Jose Ron- Alejandro (galan 2)
Arleth Teran- Vanessa (villana. Sister of Alejandro)
Ana Martin- Feli (mother of heroine. Runs a humble 'pension')
Carmen Becerra- Karina (antagonista. Best friend of Vanessa)
Humberto Elizondo- Adolfo (father of Alejandro & Vanessa)
Monica Sanchez-Navarro- Georgina (mother of Alejandro & Vanessa)
Norma Herrera- Carmina (lives in Feli's pension, reads Tarot)
Silvia Manriquez- Marcela (person who helps Maria)
Claudia Troyo- Estela
Michelle Ramaglia- Pina

A little bit of gossip here about this one: two actresses- Leticia Perdigon (who, in my opinion, was one of the (VERY FEW) really GOOD things about TSTSNBN, and is consistently good in everything she is in), and the legendary Mexican actress Maria Victoria had BOTH signed on for roles in this novela, with their characters having been drawn and photo shoots of these actresses in character taken. Then the producer decided that he was spending too much money on cast salaries and axed them both. Shady!

Producer Roberto Gomez Fernandez is bringing us the latest production that's come onto our radar, an adaptation of one of the most successful Spanish novela/series' in recent times, the period mystery piece 'Gran Hotel'. THIS one sounds awesome- a man goes to investigate the mysterious disappearance of his sister, who vanished while working at this sprawling 'Gran Hotel' that's full of all sorts of mysterious secrets and shady characters. As noted, three actors have already confirmed- Erick Elias is to be the protagonist/galan (he beat out, among others, Mark Tacher, Jorge Poza, and Marcelo Cordoba for the role), the other two are two true telenovela titans- Daniela Romo and Diana Bracho.

Sra. Romo was the very first to sign on to the project and, at first hearing, one would think that she would be a shoe-in and a perfect fit for the role of the hotel's imperious owner, Doña Teresa, a character of devious mind and overwhelming personality who is so alike another, previous, memorable character played by Sra. Romo (and here I refer to Doña Juana Arellano in 'Alborada') that it's almost uncanny (a classic line from Teresa- "Te trato asi para que no olvides quien soy" / "I treat you like this so you will never forget who I am"). But, no, in fact Sra. Romo is to play the hotels implacable governess, and another classic telenovela actress/villainess is playing the hotel's owner- Diana Bracho.

So this one is off to a good start, already. With the role of the galan having been filled, the list of actresses that have read and auditioned for the role of the female protagonist is like a Who's Who of heroines- Ana Brenda, Zuria Vega, Cecilia Suarez, Ximena Navarrete, Ximena Herrera, and Danna Garcia.

Also, as has been mentioned before (and of special interest to CarayCaray readers, many of whom are stateside) this one will also be premiering in the States before it does in Mexico.

'A que no me dejas' is in full swing down here. It debuted to shockingly low ratings, which as it turns out wasn't so much a statement as it was an inescapable and factual statement as to where novelas are right now as, without exception, every Televisa telenovela airing presently down here ('A que no me dejas', 'Amor de Barrio', 'La Vecina', 'Lo Imperdonable', and 'Antes muerte que Lichita') are all on average around 4 full points LOWER than novelas airing in the same time slots in every recent year previous. Still, those that are watching it sing it's praises, and critics alike are unanimous in declaring it a novela of high quality.

For those who don't know, and are curious, this novela is a remake of a true classic, 'Amor en silencio', which first aired in 1989 and had absolutely everything going for it- Erika Buenfil and Arturo Peniche were the two leads, and it was produced and written by three people who I think should be considered a Holy Trinity of Telenovela writers/producers- Carla Estrada was the producer, and the two writers were Liliana Abud (the most prolific telenovela writer/adapter- and of GOOD novelas- of all time), and Eric Vonn, unquestionably the most radical and 'envelope pushing' telenovela writers out there, whose works are almost always 'unlike any other'. Almost all of Sr. Vonn's work in the past two decades has been with either Telemundo or TV Azteca (if any readers may be wondering why they haven't heard of him) but in all three networks he has given us classics or modern classics- 'Amor en Silencio' and 'Mi Segunda Madre' for Televisa, (the only other work he has written for Televisa over the last twenty years was another truly unique novela- 'Piel de Otono'), 'Tierra de Pasiones' and 'Pecados Ajenos' for Telemundo, and 'La Loba' and 'Cielo Rojo' for TV Azteca.

From what I understand and have read, this is a faithful adaptation of the original, that deserves better ratings. If the protagonist couple could be said to be untested (Camila Sodi hasn't done anything since 2004's 'Inocente di ti', unless you count something in 2014 which I had never heard of- 'Senorita Polvora', and this is Osvaldo Benevides' first lead role after his successful co-starring turn in LQLVMR), the surrounding cast is stellar- Leticia Calderon's first role in three years is as a tender and supportive matriarch (after creating back-to-back iconic villains in ENDA and 'Amor bravio'), Arturo Peniche is her husband, Salvador Zerboni and Lisset in supporting roles, Laura Carmine is the youth antagonist, and Alejandra Barros (last seen as Candela in 'Sombra') is apparently chewing up the scenery in role written that way- the galan's deranged and psychotic sister (Margarita Sanz was terrifying to look at in the original, so much did she seem to embody her characters lunacy). Anyway, like I said, low ratings here, so I don't know if that will reflect when (or 'if') you guys get it up there, but there's some information for you about that one.

Finally (Televisa / Univision wise, anyway), off in the distance, are the rumblings about a remake of 'Lazos de amor'. Angelli Nesma Medina IS at the helm, and Angelique Boyer is going to be the one giving life (one hopes) to the triplets. One would assume that Sebastian Rulli would be the galan (considering his real-life romance and involvement with Boyer) but this is not confirmed. Most recently, Cristian de la Fuente's name is now also being thrown around. Actually, while I hate to indulge in unconfirmed gossip or rumors, as I was doing some final research in preparation of preparing this for you guys, just today some random website posted something declaring that Boyer is playing the triplets, Sebastian Rulli, David Zepeda and Alejandro Nones are going to be the galans, Daniela Castro (!) is going to be playing Boyer's adoptive mother (played by Maty Huitron in the original), and Alexis Ayala is going to be playing the triplets uncle. Same website went on to declare that a casting as gone out looking for children to portray the triplets when they are children, and that this production will probably debut in Mexico in March 2016, after 'Pasion y poder'. So THAT's, apparently, the VERY latest... I guess we'll have to wait and see how accurate it turns out to be! :-)

Meanwhile, over at Telemundo, 'Bajo el mismo cielo' is doing quite well, apparently far exceeding the network's original hopes and expectations for it. Up next for Telemundo (in regards to productions that DON'T involve glamorizing the drug-and-criminal world) is 'Quien es quien?', which is being produced by Joshua Mintz (who's two most recent credits as Producer/Executive Producer were 'Marido en alquiler' and 'La reina del sur'), and Carmen Cecilia Urbaneja (whose done pretty much everything else. It stars Danna Paola as the heroine, Eugenio Siller in a dual role as twins who were separated at birth, Laura Flores in a sweet and sympathetic, motherly role, and Kimberley Dos Ramos ('Irina' in 'Tierra de reyes') in her first role as the main villain of the story.

Of the two 'narco' productions, 'El senor de los cielos 4' is in the production. Most of the usual suspects have returned. The most noteworthy addition would be Ivonne Montero, who is apparently going to be the main villana of the story, somehow. 'Senora Acero 2' will pick up with Sara having been in prison for 5 years. Miguel Varoni will apparently be doing a lot of the directing.

The other two productions in the works are a little more hazy- 'La Querida del Centauro' stars Ludwika Paleta and will be in the 10 pm time slot. The basic premise, apparently is about a woman "capable of breaking the law out of love for her daugher. Even risking her own life, she serves as bait to capture one of the most dangerous drug traffickers (what IS it with the DRUGS already, Telemundo????) in Mexico.

The last one is called 'La Indomable', and is primarily a vehicle for Lucero. It's about a woman who struggles "to overcome many injustices as she tries to rebuild her family after finding love again". (No word yet as to how drugs and drug trafficking will factor into the story). Stories and reports that William Levy is in the works to star as the galan- while quite prevalent on many news sites and reports (of varying calibre) are still unconfirmed, and remain just rumors.

I THINK that's about everything or, at least, everything that I can think of! I hope that this information has been in whatever way useful or of interest to all you wonderful and colorful people here in the community of CarayCaray, and I look forward to whatever thoughts or feedback that you may have on all of this!

With my continued best wishes to all! :-)

Oooo! My head's gonna 'splode! Thank you Diva! Thank you, Stevey! Pasion y Poder and Gran Hotel sound like one's I'll check out. Feel like a babe in the novela woods. Think I'll save this page as a reference.

This is a great feature, Diva! Thank you! Thank you so much for all your hard work!

Gracias

I saw Fernando Colunga with his padre on Cristina a long time ago & never was able to find it again. Saw it today, easy to see where FC got his looks, papacito!
It is the first clip

Oh, yes. He definitely takes after his dad.

Can't wait for Pasion y Poder; put me on that team. Some of the others sound interesting, too.

As to the declining ratings overall, I think this is probably attributable to more television choices. It took quite a while for the major TV networks in the US to lose rating points but it happened when more and more of the country began signing on to cable and satellite TV and for those networks to grow in distribution and audience.

Novelas are probablu also suffering from the accelerated remake cycle which is fueled by the loss of kid- and teen- targeted novelas. This means that the grown-up stories get remade faster. This will continue if there is a dearth of new stories, which has moved some networks to producing these narco stories. But we have had whole discussions about this issue.

Thank you, Lila! Lots of good stuff here. I'm not even sure which show I'm most excited about!

Thanks for the clip, Variopinta!

Interesting info, Urban!

Thank yous to both Diva for our weekly update/newsletter and to Stevey for the info on the 'novelas showing in Mexico and their ratings.

Urban is spot on about the ratings being diluted by more channels and shows available to viewers in Mexico and the U. S.

I am looking forward to giving the new shows a try.

Whoo! Thanks for this update guys. Some of these TNs look totally fabulous! I love to see Lucero on the screen, but paired with W. Levy? I have my doubts...

Looks like some good ones coming up on both sides! I'm disappointed, though, that they're doing ANOTHER Senor de los Cielos. This could've been a good season to get the next generation out of the drug business once and for all (albeit with lots and lots of drug money), but no. Gotta drag it out one more time. Are there no other drug dealer stories to exploit? Time to move on, Telemundo.

Kelly

Thank you, doris! What's that joke about so many channels and nothing on? I could do with more TNs at other times of the day!

Thank you, hellashelle! Yeah, William Levy should be so lucky.

Lol, Kelly, they're trying so hard to give us "new" stuff, for that I'll give them credit.

This is wonderful Kat!

Huge thanks to Stevey who gave us so much to ponder and look forward to.

I wish there were more hours in the day to watch TNs! 2 is the maximum I can handle now but if I had my druthers, I would likely try and watch all 4 evening TNS...

Ladrón que roba a ladrón 2 AKA Ladrones

2015 release with FC, Eduardo Yanez y Miguel Varoni

Thanks, Diva and Stevey! Looks like a lot to look forward to.

I LOVED the Spanish Gran Hotel. I wonder how this one will compare.

Thank you all for your input.

Variopinta--Isn't Ladron que Roba a Ladron a movie with the same actors (including a sweaty shirtless Gabriel Soto)?

Are they turning it into a tn? How would they do that with the same actors.

P.S. DIVA COULD STILL USE SOME HELP ON TAKING DOWN THE CARAYCARAY COPYCATS. IT'S NOT HARD TO DO.

Preciosa Perla

Oh, also, waaaay in the future (no dates). I saw that Nathalia Dill (Debora in Avenida B) will reprise her role as Silvia (antagonista) in a Spanish version of Perla Preciosa. This is the Brazilian tn now showing on Telemundo in the afternoons (in two-hour chunks--and thank goodness for DVR). PP is also available on OnDemand, with the earliest episodes available until sometime in November).

Others lined up for the Mexican version (according to Wikipedia) are:
Livia Brito
Daniela Romo
Gabriel Soto
Afrika Zavala
Alexis Ayala
Blanca Soto

Does this sound right? Anyone?

The new Ladrones doesn't have Gabriel Soto, Eduardo Yanez is in it. Return of Miguel Varoni. The trailer is very funny. Its a movie, not a tn. Now we know what FC as been up to.

Hi everyone! Thanks for the kind words, and thanks to Kat for giving me the opportunity to share with everybody. ;-)

I just found out about ANOTHER Televisa telenovela that's in the works (or soon to be in the works). The news about this one just came to light today and, naturally, I wanted to share it with you all:

Anyways, this one concerns Mapat L. de Zatarain, who is starting on her next production- this one will be.... (you ready for this?):

TA DA!- a remake of 'Laberintos de Pasion', which took home the premio of 'Best Telenovela' in 2000 (whatever that's worth), and featured a truly stellar cast- Leticia Calderon, Cesar Evora and Francisco Gattorno as the protagonists, and Manuel Ojeda, Azela Robinson, and Monika Sanchez playing the villains.

No word on casting, but it's still early going. There IS a working title, however- 'Corazon que miente'....

Now, about this new 'Corazon que miente'... I'm not sure about all you guys, but I'm not quite sure how to greet this news... there's some trepidation, for sure. Of the four telenovelas that MaPat has produced in the last 8 years, three were remakes of established, successful telenovelas- 'Juro Que Te Amo' (remake of 'Los Parientes Pobres'), 'La Mujer del Vendaval' (remake of 'Un esposo para Estela'), and 'La sombra del pasado' (remake of 'La Manantial', so she's not treading on unfamiliar ground here. Where I'm a wee bit skeptical is in the realization that none of her three remakes were on a level with the original- 'Juro' couldn't hold a candle to 'Parientes', LMDV wasn't bad (but then again 'Un esposo para Estela'- while successful, itself wasn't really 'a classic'), and 'Sombra', while certainly not a flop or disgrace (I'm looking at YOU, TSTSNBN!), and definitely possessing of some qualities that stand out (Susana Gonzales's Roberta, for one), likewise I don't believe could be said to be on par with the original (but please correct me if I'm wrong, any of you who hung out on the 'Sombra' patio). So I'm leery about what Ms. Zatarain could bring to a remake of yet another novela that by all accounts is a classic. I guess it remains to be seen.....

Personally, I don't really understand the decision to do a remake a novela that's really not THAT old, and is still rather widely known. I mean, considering that Mexican telenovelas have been airing since the early 50's, an award winning telenovela from 2000 starring an ensemble of actors who were and still ARE the best in the business (and all of whom are still acting) just doesn't make sense to me.
If writers and producers are too lazy or otherwise disinterested in coming up with original stories, rather than remake 'more of the same', why not do Mexican versions of other successful Brazilian, Venezuelan, or Colombian shows? A modern day remake of a classic Mexican novela that most everyone knows and loves has a lot to live up to and, as we have seen, in the end hardly ever suffices or satisfies. But take a great and successful story that Mexican (and American) viewers AREN'T necessarily familiar with, cast it with some of the stellar actors that the Mexican telenovela industry is full of, and you'll give an increasingly jaded viewing audience something new and of quality to whet their proverbial whistles. Sounds good to me!! :-)

I actually have my own, personal 'wish list' of three favorites 'foreign' novelas that I would absolutely LOVE for some intrepid Televisa producer to take on, and that I'd like to share with you all (if you all don't mind indulging me for a minute), and I HIGHLY encourage anybody reading this that's interested or curious to check them out. All three were huge successes in their country of origin, and with good cause- they're novelas of really high quality, and I think that any of the three would be also be huge successes if redone and brought to Mexico:

The first is 'Valgame Dios' from Venezuela. It's a good, winning, story with charming protagonists, and the character of Marbelis Castillo- a truly iconic villana- is a masterful creation (and Carlota Sosa is magnificent in her portrayal- gleeful in her wickedness- and fully deserving of the awards she won for the role).

The other two are from Brazil- 'Senhora do Destino' is one... Nazare Tedesco is consistently named as the best villain of all time in the history of Brazilian telenovelas (and Renata Sorrah really gives a masterclass in acting in the role all throughout the novela) but it's also a truly unique, engaging, and multi-faceted storyline.

And the other is 'A Favorita'- one of the most 'clever' storylines I've ever seen, a tangled web of deceit that really keeps the audience guessing. The conflict between the two female protagonists that is at the heart and the basis of the story is almost Shakespearean.

Anyway, if any of you happen to be bored and looking for something new and different to watch, I highly recommend checking out any of those three. And thanks for letting me share this with you all! :-)

Wow thank you La Diva and Stevey for compiling the information. These are quite darn interesting shows especially Gran Hotel( OMG Diana Bracho and Daniela Romo together, this will be a blast!!) and Pasion Y Poder (Your time is up Mejia!). Also Lucero and WL together ?!, Call me insane!

To be serious I don't think I will be having time to watch them all but I will try my best. I really dislike Angeli's productions not because of the casting but for the crappy writing. As long as my men A.Avila and A.Ayala are in it then my body is always ready but I dread already on how AB would play triplets on the same pace Lucero did without looking silly. There is no beating that role. I wish the novela had a better producer. But well Daniela Castro is also in it and I love that crazy woman!

Gracias, Diana! I could fit in more TNs if there were fewer commercials :D It's not like I'm watching them anyway.

Gracias, Jarifa!

Katie, I guess we'll find out. That one is one I'm looking forward to as well.

Variopinta, gracias for the Ladrones link...I'm going to take the liberty of reposting it, shortened. Long web addresses tend to mess with formatting.

Ladrones trailer

Gracias, Anita! I'll add the new PP version info. And yes, I can always use more help with the copycats! My email address is in my profile.

Stevey, thank you! I know that was a lot of work to put together, and certainly made everything sound far more enticing than the bare-bones list. I'll get the Corazon info added.

Thank you, Countx! It sure is a lot to watch...I may have to clear my schedule :D

Hi Anita! Hope all is well with you!

Regarding your post above... unfortunately, I think your information here is erroneous- a victim of some idiot taking liberties and doing some 'creative editing' on Wikipedia. For, apart from the SPANISH language Wikipedia page for 'Preciosa Perla', there is absolutely NO corresponding information ANYWHERE on the internet about a new, Spanish language production of Joia Rara/Preciosa Perla (the original, Brazilian Wikipedia page likewise doesn't list anything). Nor do any internet searches cross-referencing either 'Preciosa Perla' or 'Joia Rara' with the name of ANY of the actors listed on that Wikipedia page for the remake come up with anything. There is only one page that does- somebody's personal telenovela-info blog that obviously just cut-and-pasted the offending Wikipedia page in its entirety into their blog (which explains the one hit).

I was originally suspicious about the veracity of this information when you mentioned that Nathalia Dill would be reprising her role for the new, Spanish remake- Ms. Dill does not speak Spanish (nor, from what I understand, does Giovanna Eubank- also listed in the 'cast'). So I did a little digging, and when I found the source of your information (the offending Wikipedia page) I couldn't help but notice that there were NO references cited or footnotes to links to ANY source for that whole part of that particular section of the page. None! So someone with an active imagination (or a fleeting grasp of reality) could very well have just hit 'edit', written in the new section with their fantasy casting, and hit 'save' and readers would be none the wiser that his information isn't based on anything even remotely factual.

So, the fact that my searches linking ANY of the actors cited with this new project revealed nothing, AND that cast in this 'new version' contains all TELEVISA actors, AND THEN one who is in the middle of an exclusivity contract with the OTHER network (Blanca Soto's Telemundo deal was for two novelas and one show), AS WELL AS two actors who don't speak the language, NOR mentions ANYTHING about any producer for the project ANYWHERE (producers and a bit of information about the production are invariably the FIRST things to be announced about a project... how can casting be done without a producer?) all leads me to think that, with this one, we can safely cry 'foul'.

I'm going to erase the offending section on the Wikipedia page. Hopefully it won't resurface without someone providing corresponding factual information to reference.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. :-(

More news!!! :-)

'Pasion y poder' now has a 'fecha de estreno' for the United States, too!

So, mark this on your calendars, all who are interested... the novela with the dream cast of Gonzales/Salinas/Colunga/Favela will begin airing on in the States on Univision on Tuesday, November 3 at 9 PM (it's debut in Mexico is set to be October 5th, after 'Lo imperdonable').

A bit more on casting for this one, too... Jose Pablo Minor (currently 'Gael' in MIVAC, previously 'Tato' in QPTR) is going to be the youth galan, and the beloved of Michelle Renaud's 'Regina' (so, I'm imagining, probably the son of Gonzales & Colunga, considering that Renaud is the daughter of Salinas & Favela).

Looking forward to this one!!! :-)

Gracias Stevey. I will definetly try tuning in to the novela and of course the recaps. I am also watching A Que No Me Dejas on its Mexico run and I have to say that it is a quality novela. Pasion also has a better director than Mejia so it is going to be a nice show to watch for! Also looking forward to Gran Hotel.

A Tuesday debut... is that going to be the norm from now on?

Anyway, despite it bringing an overlap I am putting in for Pasion y Poder. Any novela with Jorge Salinas is on my radar.

I am all for remaking great novelas from other countries as long as the network does a good job of it. Telemundo's remake of EL CLON wasn't different enough from the Brazilian original to justify it. Some of the cast members were better-looking, but not better actors and the primary problem with the original wasn't addressed at all.

Stevey--I hadn't been back to see these comments until today. WOW is right. I should have questioned the veracity myself--Nathalia Dill speaking Spanish, but so many actors are bilingual these days (at least English-Spanish).

Glad you set us straight. I'm even happier to know nobody in Mexico is going to touch this "precious pearl" of a tn.
