Weekend Discussion: Crimes of Fashion, 2nd Edition

It is my information from colleagues (including the late Richard Blackwell) that fashion felonies are the cocktail enjoyed prior to the aperitif of society peccadilloes and the entrée of scandal and murder. It is always satisfying to know that the moneyed classes are as human – or inhuman – as anyone else in their roles in their own downfalls. To this end, the paparazzi at Vanidades have provided me with these sometimes hilarious and otherwise frightening examples of questionable taste. My colleague, fashion critic Soledad Romero-Vargas, provides the captions.

Enjoy and provide your comments. And please, if you have any excellent candids for a future edition send me an e-mail with the files attached. I do protect my sources. – D.D.

Let's start with older people who really should know better:
Vittorio Dragone, this looks too much like a Troll King's palace no matter what the interior design is.

You also really need to update that hair and those glasses.
Older women really need to learn how to draw the line where necklace design is concerned:
Ursula Santibañez gets the clothes just right, but that necklace has got to go.

Eloisa del Angeles not only loves optical illusions...

..does she really need the same necklace in different color schemes?
Whoever designed this hybrid horror should be taken out and hung.

Wearing a necklace like this with a collar is truly gauche.

If she weren't such a fashion disaster area herself one could hardly blame Sonia for not wanting people to know that Belinda is her mother.

Federica del Angel obviously has no idea how to dress for the office
Monserrat Moret, you aged out of this blouse about ten years ago
Nina Perez de Montenegro commits three felonies in one shot:  Animal prints are gauche, flowers in the hair are for younger women and flamenco dancers, and purple lipstick is just declasse.

That romper shows that your daughter will learn nothing chic about fashion from you.
Someone should really tell Nina Perez de Montenegro how campesina this pattern looks.  Never mind that the necklace gets lost, that tassels neckline is truly childish and does nothing for whom Nina thinks she is.

We are stunned at the prospect of Pedro del Angel marrying this fashion disaster.

It looks like the disease is spreading.  Only hillbillies would combine patterns like this.

You are in an office, my dear, not clubbing.  You could all learn something from Diana.

Doris, your makeup is lovely.  We don't understand why you aren't combining clothes with equal ability.
Sparkling blouses should not have collars and bling necklaces should not be worn with either.

Sadly, this necklace gets lost on a patterned dress.  But it shouldn't be worn in the daytime anyway.

Fiorella Bianchi, your sister is too old for these braids.  They don't match the dress, which also doesn't match your position.  But perhaps that isn't your fault.

Roxana, doesn't the school have a dress code?  If so how do you get away with violating it on a daily basis?

Gael del Angel should not be looking like a hood from the 'hood.  I won't even mention the awful haircut under it.

Nina, stop trying to be a princess and recognize that you are the evil queen.  And I've paid $1 US for necklaces like that.

Comments:
I think the main issue with all of those huge statement necklaces is that the wearers don't let them make the statement! They've got too much else talking in the outfit.

Roxi's in college, so probably not much of a dress code. Maybe she doesn't own any outfits she doesn't plan to wear while dancing on a table?

I must say though, I do appreciate the...creativity that goes into the outfits. I like that they're not boring, even when they're not appropriate. But Eloisa's skinny pants+socks?stockings?weird shoes?, yeah her whole lower half is just ick to me. Not even creativity can give it a pass.

In terms of hair, where's Benny's mom?

UA, I laughed my head off - thank you for these great shots and commentary.

I wondered why Donna Dixon from the Beverly Hillbillies was being channeled in that checked top last night and Pedro's shirt was no better!

As bad as that was, I don't think anything I've seen recently rivals that curtain tassel necklace. I could not concentrate on anything being said, I just kept thinking, why, oh why?

Nina's wardrobe definitely displays how tacky she really is. The papaya-colored evening dress was pretty and not overdone except for the slit up to her thigh. That's where it was a fail, but it wasn't that visible if she was just standing. Otherwise it suited her coloring and figure.

The animal print one should have been cheetah spots because those cats can't retract their claws.

Loved the screencap. Call the fashion polkice swat team. YIKES Whatever happened to understatement ? Remember a few years ago ,when women wore a pair of stud earrings , a delicate watch , and a tiny bracelet???

I love statement necklaces and I make them, but they need to be worn with solid colors and/or open necklines, and at the appropriate hours of the day for the design.

In recent years I've seen some ugly hybrid designs that I just don't understand.

As to Eloisa's skinny pants and weird shoes, can we say Halloween witch?

Great stuff UA--there just isn't enough room for all the fashion faux pas that occur and reoccur in our latest bunch of telenovelas. We should have another round of this with more men. I'm so tired of all the *boys* who wear t-shirts, sport English language sayings on them.

The curtain-tassel necklace is definitely a first for me. Are large bauble necklaces coming back into vogue, or what? It seems to me the designers are probably getting an advertising and sales boost on these shows. There's no other explanation. The bigger the better? And the reverse is true, we got to see the cursi 70s shell necklace David got Dani, but did not get to see the tasteful diamond pendant Johnny gave her.

I used to measure the degree of sluttiness (or social caste) by the size and ornateness of women's earrings and necklaces. They've turned it all inside out and rightside down. Can't be done anymore.

I do like Alma's jewelry, though, especially the diamond-and-pearl drop earrings she's worn in the last two or three episodes. She dresses fashionably and elegantly--about the only one in YoNo. I feel sorry for Doris because she, of all people, being in the fashion "business" should recognize that she should lean toward fashions that befit her size--and there are such fashions (Ivana is doing ok)--than continue to try to look like a provocative teenager. Even Clara, who *is* a teenager dresses better than she does. Doris, at least recognizes that she likes bright colors and gaudy layering while others don't.

I said it at the beginning and I can still say it now, darn. MD should lose the sweaters. She *ditto what I said about Doris and being in the fashion business* should be able to dress a little more elegantly, for Max, even if she's hanging around the house in high heeled shoes--or maybe especially since she's hanging around the house in high heeled shoes.

At least in YoNo, while we have some short hemlines on women and some ultra-tight dresses (lookin' at you Isela), it doesn't rise to the level of PyP. Too many women here wearing hemlines that barely cover their privates. And Nina's butt? It's like she carries her own pillow around with her.

i think the problem with those statement necklaces is that they are worn for the sake of wearing, and way too many times don't either go with the outfit, or are thrown on an understated article of clothing and the affect is min-numbing. I almost feel like it's product placement in Muchacha.

I think there is a contest going on in P&P to see who can wear the tight, shortest dress. They all are doing it frankly and it's starting to get annoying. Ok, we get they are all stick thin and gorgeous, but it's just unrealistic. They wear those things in the dumbest places (Gina goes to visit lame-brain in the jail not once, but twice in one of those things). wWen did jeans and a sweater go out of style for down time...c'mon. I know VERY rich people. THEY DO NOT DRESS LIKE THAT ALL DAY.

But let's face it, every TN there is a character or group of characters who we just do NOT understand what the costumers are thinking. To this day, I can't get over those stupid tight-waist vest contraptions Maite had to wear in Mi Pecado or the DEEP dive open shirts and vest Lucero kept wearing in Soy. yeah, try really working on a ranch in that get-up.

I should design jewelry for these shows. Here is my folder on Photobucket, albeit an incomplete one. I have a large stock I can't sell because of all the cheap junk coming in from China these days.

I don't like the men's haircuts these days. Gael with the long-on-top-and-nearly-shaved-sides look makes me really do a WTF and Pedro's version makes him look like a lit match.

UA--They are all lovely. You *should* be designing for all the shows. I want one of each, but do not have enough days left in my life to estrenar them all.

Ari has one of those funny shaved haircuts, but not as severe as the questionable coates in their hood. It must be a real trend (waxing or waning). I've seen young Latino guys wearing the exact same haircut on the Spanish language news and on the streets and shopping centers in our area.

Thank you for the topic, UrbanA.

”I used to measure the degree of sluttiness (or social caste) by the size and ornateness of women's earrings and necklaces.”
And not the size of her boobs? It’s in the telenovela rules…

”I wondered why Donna Dixon from the Beverly Hillbillies was being channeled in that checked top last night and Pedro's shirt was no better!”Elly Mae Clampett, indeed. Both those outfits are a train wreck. I was shocked, I tell you, when I saw that “Turn it up” tank on Pedro. QTH? I am left without words …..

”As to Eloisa's skinny pants and weird shoes, can we say Halloween witch?” Or Cruella DeVille. Keep her away from puppies.

"Pedro's version makes him look like a lit match." - MuaHahahahaaaa!

URBAN - thank you for the link to your jewelry. OMG it is beautiful!!! Do you have an Etsy store?

Doris--
If you are categorizing Big Boobs as a fashion statement, as shown on Tns, ok.

Anita - well, they ARE an accessory that is purchased. ~snicker~

No, I don't have an Etsy store. I would if I could sell these pieces but when so much cheap junk comes in from China and similar stuff that must have been made by prison labor I can't compete. I don't know what to do at this point.

Getting back to this weekend's topic, I think we can look forward to more fashion felonies to come.

BTW, if the Telemundo viewers have examples, please put up their edition of Crimes of Fashion. I am already collecting photos for a 3rd edition from the current programs on Univision.

UA, thanks for a fabulous photo essay. These Crimes of Fashion are a hoot.

Doris, your makeup is lovely. We don't understand why you aren't combining clothes with equal ability.

Doris and Maria Dolores are an interesting contrast. Doris's hit-or-miss Bohemian look works as well as it does because of the character's dynamic presence, but MD's look is often so down-played that sometimes I wonder if she's really into being in the fashion industry.

Ever see photos of Edith Head? She designed some amazing formalwear for movies and the jet set but she was as plain as you can be. She also had a wonderful quote:

Your dresses should be tight enough to show you're a woman and loose enough to show you're a lady.

Thanks for this UA. Fashion crimes are always hilarious and, in an effort to make the clothes POP (I guess) they create disasters.

For me, Alma is the best dressed in YNCELH. She is always very stylish and coordinated. Ursula is also a close second for me.

I enjoyed MD"s style, it is downplayed but it works for her. Personally, so much makeup is kind of off putting sometimes. She could and should lose the sweaters, idk why they're still there.

Daisynjay,

As mean as it may sound, I think those were to give Maite some semblance of hips. Notice she would always wear jeans, blouse, vest without fail. I think I saw her wear a dress and cowboy boats one time and it did not look as flattering. I personally enjoyed her character's style, although I could do without the random headbands. They reminded me of Debra Massing's character on Smash, she always had a scarce on. So much so that the scarves had their own Twitter page! LOL

Here is the one dress Maite wore: http://images4.fanpop.com/image/photos/14600000/Maite-Perroni-mi-pecado-14695239-404-604.jpg

Here is the corset: http://images4.fanpop.com/image/photos/17400000/Mi-Pecado-2009-anahi-and-dulcemaria-and-maite-17491199-1785-1124.jpg

I'm surprised that nobody from AMQL didn't contribute. If that's a comedy it should be loaded with fashion felonies.

That photo of fifi and gigi, was it supose to
Read " giana bianchi, your sister is to old for
Those braids?" Or no?
That purple lipstick on ninas face is a horrid tragedy, but we keep seeing her purple lips
Nightly. Why?
Doris is a lovely girl. A pretty face. I to would
Like to see more effort made to her clothing
Choices. Her skirts are to short for her legs.
If she's trying for sexy, she can surely do it without the Display of the hamhawks. Im Not saying be old Maid looking, maybe bring the hemline to the knee. And those blouses can
Use some lengthening too. They're to short for Her waist.
The suit urrsula is wearing is nice. she is so mean nothing she wears is going to look all
That good. And that wicked witch hair style
Is no help. Ok thats it for now. Yall have at it.
O one more thing: did vitto buy his house from froto? :-D

Thank you for the topic and the photos, Urban. I have to confess; I do wear leopard. But not head to toe, not skintight, and only one piece at a time. I'll wear a leopard top with black pants or vice versa. You know, I have read Paul Fussell's book "Class." But I guess it didn't stick.

Interestingly this video put itself in my Facebook feed this evening. Thought you'd all like it (although it has nothing to do with our programs).

I was saying Gianna is too old for those braids (she's 5 years younger than Fiorella) but the caption function in Blogger doesn't allow me to bold or italicize.

I remember that corset and didn't notice at the time that she didn't look like she had a waist if you really thought about it. What always sticks out to me are when colors and patterns clash. Some look like the character is meant to be color-blind.
