WEEKEND DISCUSSION 6/18/20: Evils and Anvils…Too Much? Too Little?
Picture provided by Doris! |
In 70 BC, when writing about law and crime, Marcus Tullius Cicero opined, “Let the punishment be proportionate to the offenses.” And how many times has that happened (or not) in Telenovelalandia?
Labels: best-worst, telenovelas, weekend
1. Danilo (Alberto Estrella) being sent to prison and burned to death in the courtyard by his fellow mates. La Malquerida
2. Diana (Altair Jarabo) had her eyes gouged out by Fausto who led her to a cliff where she fell (K-PLUNK!) Que Te Perdone Dios
3. (Dis)Grace > (Kimberly Dos Ramos) falling down the stairs and dying instantly Vino El Amor This one is memorable because it was too quick!
4. Fausto (Mike Biaggio) and La Toña (Claudia Rios) being arrested and though it wasn't shown, probably ended up in prison. La Doble Vida de Estella Carrillo The worst about this one is that Univision cut this scene...and these were too quick and too little!
5. Emanuel (Arturo Barba) being locked in a dog cage for the rest of his sorry life by Mireya's father. La Bella y las Bestias BEST ONE!!
These are the ones that come to mind right now. Once others are posted, I'll probably add more.
Have a great day!!
Great topic!
Now let's see if I can come up with some good anvils...
Rubi with a destroyed face and sans one leg
Barbara in MEPS - burned and alone in jail
Kendra killed by wolves...
I noticed that many villain women end up with a bad face, a token of their superficiality. Simple death would be too easy...
RGV, I might have an idea for a weekend discussion, is anyone supposed to write something for next week?
Inadequate:
Catalina Creel (Paz Vega) of Cuna de Lobos (2019). No Karmageddon until -- possibly -- after the curtain went down. We needed to see her get caught. From the same producer...
Ursula Santibanez (Rosa Maria Bianchi) of Yo No Creo en los Hombres (2014). Karmageddon incomplete. She shot her son dead when he stepped up to protect Maria Dolores, but we didn't see her get arrested or carted off to the manicomio.
Excessive:
Daniela Montenegro (Irina Baeva) of Pasion y Poder (2014). Instead of killing her off the writers should have shown her suffering and succeeding in rehab. Her mother Nina was also too heavily punished also by losing two out of three of her children as well as her husband. Her crimes did not merit this.
Perfect:
Nicolas Obregon (Enrique Rocha) of El Privilegio de Amar (1998). Stabbed onstage in front of an opening-night audience by Tamara (Cynthia Klitbo) whom he chokes to death at the same time. Seriously creative on the writers' part and appropriate to their crimes.
Ana Joaquina Villarde (Marga Lopez) El Privilegio de Amar (1998). In prison after recovery from burns sustained in a house fire. Goes mad, believing that the fires of hell are coming up around her. Loaded with hubris and among the worst of the toxic mothers.
Federico (Cesar Evora) of Abrazame Muy Fuerte (1999). Shot by police and sucked down into hell. Perfect in view of his evil actions, particularly against women and his own two sons.
(Diana Bracho) of Fuego en la Sangre (2008). Buried alive by Fernando Escandon. Considering how she tried to imprison her own daughters and even kill the oldest one, this is apt.
Finally, with the exception of Daniela Montenegro, Disgrace, and all suicides, everything on the Toxic Sisters page. Carlota (Leticia Calderon) of En Nombre de Amor is a particularly good one.
I also consider suicide to be the cowards' way out, so most of those are Inadequate.
Urban, what a great memory you have. I had completely forgotten about Nicolas and Ana Joaquina in "El Privilegio de Amar". Those were truly perfect!
Horrible to contemplate. Thanks for reminding us Urban. And Kendra being eaten by wolves, another horrid end (thanks Adriana Noel)
Graciela de Mendoza (Daniela Castro) of Lo Que la Vida Me Robo. Ended up insane and homeless. Greedy toxic mother who ruined many lives, sold herdaughter to the highest bidder (twice), and participated in several murder attempts. Perfect outcome.
Pedro Medina (Sergio Sendel) of Lo Que la Vida Me Robo. Prison for life, to be raped daily by the other inmates. Perverted creep whose loss of his male parts was a major contributing factor to his sadism. Also politically corrupt. Perfect.
I also liked the anvil that Isaura (Sylvia Pasquel)suffered in Amarte Es Mi Pecado. After tormenting two younger women, she leaves in a truck with the one who plans her punishment. She is left locked in the closed trailer (very hot outside), while Casilda rolls on down the road with the truck driver.
The two most perfect anvils I can remember are MEPS, where Barbara had her face horribly scarred from a bad burn and sentenced to life in prison, and FELS, where Gabriela was buried alive. These were satisfying anvils because Gabi's was a slow-ish death, and Barb's was a living nightmare.
There have been a few telenovelas I have watched where the baddies seem to get no anvil at all, which is infuriating. Watching a telenovela fills the need for us to see a bad person get their just desserts because real life often does not. I just cannot recall which ones had the bad guy not suffer so much in the end.
First, let me say I am grateful I did not see many of these. Oh my heavens.
My "top" choice is indelibly seared into my brain and I see it was also the same for my former recapping partner Rgv Chick.
It is Danilo, the amazing Alberto Estrella in La Malquerida. This was the first TN I helped to recap. But, but, how could this evil monster be the same actor who was the marvelous, handsome swashbuckler Mario in Pasion? I found it almost impossible to reconcile the two.
But evil incarnate he was. The story of a woman's husband lusting after her daughter who he helped raise (after he killed her husband) was sad and sordid enough. But the at first seemingly good galan who was later exposed to be an amoral, murdering sociopath had nothing on Danilo. His sins will not be repeated here.
I have to be honest and say I've always felt villains deserve lifelong incarceration. The lack of any freedom is more enduring and crushing than momentary pain and suffering. I feel judgement comes in the next life. I don't enjoy gory endings for anyone. Seeing him lit like a torch was so disturbing, I will never forget it.
That said, I also agree that Emanuel,(Arturo Barba) being locked in a dog cage for the rest of his sorry life in La Bella y las Bestias was a fitting end.
I agree with you Judy that women's punishments seem to be crueler than many of the men. Barbara in MEPS was heartless but the burning was savage. I am just realizing that I have an especially difficult time with fire...
And Daniela's in Pasion was horrid. While there are things that cannot be forgiven, her ending was something no one should be forced to endure.
Thank you to everyone.
Diana
The author Diana Gabaldon recently commented that she had " crippling empathy" which , I guess, is empathy so strong that you actually experience someone else's pain and suffering, physical or mental.
