La Fea Más Bella #163-164 1/11/11 The day everyone’s life changes.

Capitulo 163.
Read Julie’s original recap, then come back here to discuss it.

1. Irma asks Rafael if there was another woman, and he doesn’t answer. She refuses to forgive him.

2. When Ali tells Tom to bring in the checkbook, he freezes. She realizes, “He won’t just give it to me (for free). He wants something in exchange. Of course, he’s the same as all the rest. If that’s what it takes, very well.” Alicia starts to undress Tomy.

3. Lety tells her parents that she will resign tomorrow. MamaJ probes, “What will Fernando say about all this?” L: It’ll be the best (thing) for him. J: I don’t believe that. I think he adores you. L: He’ll find a better assistant and forget about me. In business, affection doesn’t count.

4. Ali and Tomy afterwards. She invites him to spend the night, but first he has to get her check. She knows she’ll kick him out the moment she has it. Tom struggles between his women but chooses Lety. Ali finds out Tom left.

5. Lety tells her parents that she’s going to work out of town for Carolina. She’ll return FI to Fernando tomorrow. Lety tells her diary, “It’s all finished.” She gave in to his kiss because it was the last one. She’s going where she won’t be reminded of Fernando and won’t hear about his wedding.

6. Marcia calls Fern. She’s tired of his sarcasm and he’s tired of her surveillance. Their words are things you’d say if you were breaking up, but neither has the guts to make the break. Marcia begs Fern to tell her whether he’s going through with the wedding, and he says they’ll talk after the meeting. She knows what that implies. After he hangs up he says, “I’ll never marry you. Never!”

7. In Lety’s nightmare, she’s a dependent child whose security is home and parents. But her parents are gone and her refuge is washed away. Past Lety says Fern needs her and she’ll never leave him, but Future Lety is trying to leave the house. Lety tells herself to wake up and not to go back to dreams of love. Real Lety awakens and remembers that PG told her she would lose everything that has sustained her until now, and then she would start her true struggle to survive.

Capitulo 164.
Read Chapel Hill Fiddler’s original recap, then come back here to discuss it.

1. Tom tells Lety how wonderful Alicia is. Lety says she warned him not to fall in love. Now he has to forget about her, like she has to forget about Fernando. She says, “We don’t deserve them.” Tom corrects her, “They don’t deserve us.”

2. Fernando arrives in a great mood. He says, “Today is an important day for everyone, especially for you and me. This will be our day. After the meeting, we’ll talk about some very important things.”

3. Olarte reports that Conceptos is embargoed by FI for $40M. Ariel’s world turns upside-down.

4. Marcia arrives with fury and a hangover. She plans to tell her brother everything. She tells MamaT (Teresita) that Fern isn’t sure he wants to marry her. MamaT’s world turns upside-down. She tells Humberto, “I won’t let my son do that to Marcia.”

5. Fern tells Omar there won’t be any wedding. See the complete transcript at this link. Omar says he can’t possibly do that. Fern asks, “Should I sacrifice myself for the company?” Omar asks why he’s determined to cancel, and Fernando answers,
because I LOVE LETY.Omar’s world turns upside-down.

6. Omar tells Fern he just needs to marry Marcia for a little while, pacify his parents and Ariel, and when the company is stabilized, he can divorce her. Omar thinks Lety will accept that without a fight. Fern says no, and Omar says he has to get Lety out of the country

7. Lopez is about to write up Paula and Saimon, but Marcia asks why Paula had to stay late and threatens to fire him.

8. Lety takes Fern the doctored balance folders and she hears, “Get Lety out of the country so she doesn’t ruin the wedding.” Fern says, “Stop saying such stupid things. She wouldn’t accept that. Lety is waiting for me to cancel my wedding. What do I tell her? That I’m getting married and she has to wait for me to divorce?” Omar says, “What matters is that she delivers the balance.” Lety’s world turns even farther down.

9. When she’s gone, Fernando yells at Omar to not talk about her that way, and that he loves her. Lety walks away, crushed again. She says, “I can’t take it any more. I don’t have to stand for this.”

You still have time to stock up on Chunky Monkey for tomorrow's show. You're gonna' need it. Believe me! You're gonna' need it.

In the nightmare, when Lety attacks the wedding dress, someone is outside the door; it looks like Erasmo. Does that mean something, or did they shoot his participation in the nightmare and then decide not to use that part?

Have they changed Tom's look?

I never noticed anyone outside the door!

Is it possible that Erasmo is there to block her exit? He's always tried to keep her from becoming independent, and Julieta even lectured him about how Lety should be able to get married and leave them someday.

But if he's trying to block the exit, then it's a little strange that he'd be outside. So... maybe she feels she's shut him out, and as a result, he's unable to protect her?

Tom's look? He's wearing better clothes lately and I think he recently started parting his hair on the side instead of the middle. Do you mean something else?

I'm going to probably spend a lot of tomorrow shoveling snow (in between lots of work), so I may not be in the mood for ice cream. What's a toasty warm equivalent? (Besides hot cocoa... because I'm definitely going to need that!)

In addition to the new clothes, and parting on the side Tomas has his hair puffed kinda like Elvis and he is not as nerdy. I thought he did good not giving Alicia the check. He did go to her apartment knowing full well her intentions. In some ways smarter than Lety. As for Alicia she should start thinking with her head and not her boobs. I was afraid those things were gonna pop in that number she had on today in office. I guess censorship works differently in Mexico.
I guess now we are in the growing pain stretch of the show.
Jenn

I did notice a shadow outside the door. I didn't pay too much attention to the shape.

I hate, hate, hate the plot devices which we have to have in order to advance the misery for the duration of the TN. It is so-o-o hard to see Lety listening in to the damaging parts of the conversation and missing the beautiful and honest declarations of love from Fernando. I know, I know, they have to be parted before they can be reunited but it is so hard to watch.

I love the way you used the tag line from the title and ticked them off one by one as the world gets turned on its head for each character.

At least Tomy got his night of love and still stayed loyal to Lety -- not to mention avoiding embezzlement. As for his new look, I hope they let him keep the suits, the new glasses and even the pouf -- well, maybe not the pouf ...

Paula,
I read all the comments on this episode from 2006 and Deciegirl comments seem to be spoilers.
Can you check those....
I was reading in those comments that Mexico was 14 weeks ahead of USA and there were tons of YouTube postings at the time.
If they are spoilers, can you warn future readers of this posting before they read 2006?
Diann

Paula,
Also check the Deciegirl comments on Cap 163 of 2006...
Spoilers?

Julie, regarding Erasmo outside the door. Televisa always makes things screamingly obvious because they think their viewers are stupid - they even read signs aloud because they assume some are illiterate. If they intended us to see Pop outside, he would've been more obvious - we would've seen his mug through the frosted glass. I suspect they cut part of the scene. Maybe Dream Lety gets the door open but, following your idea, Pop's in her way and pushes her back inside.

Jenn, I've noticed that Tom is much smarter when he's outside Alicia's boobification range. Once he enters the perimeter, the sirens' voices turn his brain to mush, but when he steps out of range his brain works again. And I think he realizes that - that's why he left the checkbook in the hallway on the first visit.

Guera, yes! Lety missed "those beautiful and honest declarations of love from Fernando." Unfortunately his WILL missed them too. Fern's love is all heart and no legs. He started the meeting with Omar declaring "I'm not going to marry Marcia" and "I love Lety."

Hooray! Finally! Our perdidamente enamorado galan loves Lety soooo much that he can finally admit it to his BEST FRIEND! So give him a Dewey button! But what did he do next? He yielded to Omar AGAIN and said, "How will I tell Lety that I'm going through with the wedding?"

Lety thinks he finds her disgusting. She's wrong.
Fernando thinks he's deeply in love. He's wrong. In love? Yes. Deeply? Not even close.

Sorry if I sound harsh, Guera. Don't worry. I'm mad at Fernando, not at you.

Hi Diann, thank you for the heads up. I checked decie girl's posts on the old recaps (2 posts on each). I can tell by some of the things she says, that when she wrote the posts she hadn't seen future episodes.

I can see how her words could look like possible spoilers. But since she had NOT watched ahead at that point, the posts are all speculation, which is FUN! I envy you new viewers here - you're free to speculate, while we veterans don't dare.

Thanks Paula,

Her speculation just sounded "too good"

I can't wait until tomorrow.

This TN is crazy! But successful, they keep you wanting to come back...

Diann

Paula, finaly watched these both.
Thanks for the post. And thanks to both Julie and Melinama for the original recaps. Also thanks for the link to Melinama's translation of the Fern/Omar conversation in his office.

The nightmare scene that Lety had was quite powerful. I saw shawdows outside the door as well.

Not really into the Alicia/Thomas stories but did find it funny when Lety showed up at work with her phone ringing and it was Alicia trying to get ahold of Thomas.

It was also good to see that despite Marcia's foul mood she was able to put Lopez in his place.

It's very hard to watch Lety die inside as she prepares to leave Conceptos and Don Fernando. That scene with the water and it was her heart crying caused me to cry. Angelica Vale is a great actress. Unfortunately, Fernando is realizing too late what he feels for Lety. Obviously, it is going to take losing her to compel him to take action. We'll just have to wait and see what action that is.

Alicia is worried about her image, but she dresses like a hooker and acts like one. Basically, she was a prostitute with Tomas. Prostitutes offer sex in exchange for money. So did Alicia but Tomas never came with the money. She feels cheated but she brought it on herself. I don't feel sorry for her.

Just in case it wasn't obvious, that was the "best dream sequence ever" I mentioned last week. I think it's about as close as you can get to what a real bad dream is like.

Yes, Fern finally told somebody that he loves Lety. But do you hear his reasons for canceling the wedding? ME, ME, ME!!!
* I want Lety.
* I don’t want Marcia.
* I don’t want to suffer.
* She makes ME happy.
* I don’t want to live hiding my relationship with the woman I love.
* What about MY happiness?
He loves her, but her needs, her pain, her emotions don’t even appear on his radar. Fernandito, you’ve confessed your love to someone and you’ve taken the first step .. the first step on a journey of a thousand miles.

I'd love to hear everyone's interpretation of Lety's dream. There are actually many elements to it:
* The way she approaches the house.
* The rain. And she calls her parents and they don't answer.
* The folders on the table, then it rains on the folders.
* Fernando's picture.
* The wedding dress.
* Lety 1 calling to Lety 2. Lety 1 sits at the table while Lety 2 pounds on the door.
* One Lety trying to waken the other Lety.

How do you interpret it all?

Wonderful recaps and screen shots as always. Great title today as well, such a powerful episode. The dream was very frightening and more like a real dream than her other dreams and fantasies. It was like a horror film where the environment seems perfectly normal and then all of a sudden things go terribly wrong. Events are so removed from reality that one doesn't have the skills to properly cope. Calling parents who are not around, that can be one of the most primal fears for a child.

Oopsie! Pata, I forgot to thank you for the wonderful screen shots. Great work, as always. Thanks!

Yes Paula, you are mad at Fernando. But I did not hear him saying to Omar that he was GOING to go through with the wedding and ask Lety to wait until he could divorce. I hear him tell Omar that he was crazy to suggest such a thing, hat he couldn't do that to Lety. Guess I'm just a sucker for those big brown eyes.

Güera

Thanks for the recap update. Between Thomas' night of fire with Alicia and Lety's dream, some really big moments took place.

I'm thankful I was able to see the dream sequence again, thought it was very powerful. I haven't had time to consider all the details, but the overall image was seeing everything in Lety's life washed away, a very chilling image.

There's that old song about the foolish man built his house on the sand, the rains came down and washed it away. The wise man built his house on the rock and it stood still when the rains came. Seems as though Lety is building a love on sand with Don Fer. Their love has to be built on a rock before it can endure. Goes along with the advice from Psychic Guy.
La Paloma

I like that, Paloma! The great thing about the dream is that we can have 10 different interpretations that are equally valid.

When I watched the dream the first time around, all I could figure out was that Lety's home wasn't a secure refuge anymore. (I'm pretty lousy at deciphering symbolism until someone explains it to me. My strength is in finding evidence.) But then I read Connie's post on the old board - "Old Lety dies; new Lety is trying to get out. Mama & papa as known by a child are gone forever. Lety is an adult now."

With that roadmap from Connie, I watched the dream through that lens and almost everything made sense. Here's what I see.

• She enters her house as a dependent child, trusting in the security of her home and her parents. Notice she talked like a child when she stood at the door.
• Her parents are gone and her refuge is being washed away, and Past Lety with it.
• PAST Lety says Fern needs her and she’ll never leave him, but FUTURE Lety is trying to LEAVE. I don’t understand what the relationship is between the two Letys. Do they see each other? Don’t they seem disconnected?
• She made the fake balance to save Fern, but now it’s destroyed by the rain.
• When she kisses his photo in the rain.. I don’t see the point of that.
• And the wedding dress – it it Marcia’s dress or Lety’s dress? Does she destroy it? Does it torment her?
• Future Lety tells Past Lety (or otra vez?) to wake up and not to go back to dreams of love because it doesn’t exist. What’s the point? Past Lety is disappearing anyway, so she can’t use the knowledge. Is she asleep, or is Past Lety dying? Or is Past Lety the awake one, telling Future Lety to wake up and stop dreaming? But Future Lety knows that – she was trying to get out the door.

As you see, I'm still confused about a lot of it. And if you attach a totally different significance to the dream, that's equally valid.

I believe the rain was a symbolism for the amount of tears she is shedding. It is an enormous amount of pain, so an enormous amount of water.
I think the awake Lety was making the sleeping Lety "wake up". And the sleeping Lety was in the same position in her bed, so it was her nightmare screaming at her to awaken.
Basically, I think the running water, (rain), was an analogy of the magnitude of her tears, her pain.
She was alone in the house, because she is alone in her suffering. Only she herself knows what she is feeling.
Pretty sad episode.
One bright spot was the admission to Omar from Fern. Of course it is going to sound self centered (Paula) because he has NEVER felt this way EVER. He is VERY confused about what is going on. His whole life has been turned upside down, all because of this woman he had no intention of loving, but somehow she awakened feelings in him that he has never had. (I don't even think he got love from his Mom). So remember, Fern is trying to make things right for everyone (Conceptos, his parents, Omar) but he doesn't want it to be at his expense if it means he won't have the woman he loves. I believe he would marry Marcia had he never met Lety. Because to him (before Lety) Conceptos was his life, not Marcia. Now he feels without Lety, he won't have a life. Too bad he waited so long to realize it. Now he is going to have to work at getting what he wants, needs, in life. Rather than it being given to him (which it seems like that is what has happened his whole life).
Fernando has a LOT of work ahead of him. But I know the TN won't let us down, we will be cheering for both Lety and Fern to find the right way back to each other.
Diann

Okay, Diann. A point is emerging from this. I've said Fern has a selfish love, and a 2yo has a selfish love for his mommy (though not a passionate love like Fern's). But you're tying it together for me. Fern never got unconditional love from his mommy. Nor from Marcia nor the honeys nor his "best friend." So when that kind of love comes, he hoards it selfishly, like someone who was starving as a child hoards food for the rest of his life. He just barely started to learn how to RECEIVE selfless love. He certainly hasn't yet learned how to GIVE selfless love.

Okay, Diann, I'll buy that.

Now that I've seen the nightmare again, and reread my recap, I really don't think I did justice to it. (And the nightmare was much better than I remember, which is saying something!)

I really couldn't make out the shadow outside the door, but going by the color it really does look like Erasmo in his beige sweater. And it does seem that we were meant to see it, else the lighting would have been different; yet it's way too vague and subtle to have been intended to have been left that way. Perhaps they ended up not shooting that scene because Vale was bleeding so badly!

I noticed there were four place settings at the table. I assume the fourth setting was for Tomas? Or was it for Future Lety?

And then she sweeps two place settings off the table (plus her own glass, which broke). If they'd wanted her to sweep the whole mess off the table, they could have put it all on a tablecloth, just as they usually have it in waking life. Was it deliberate that she was pushing only the two settings off the table? Were they her parents'?

Or am I overanalyzing all of this? :o) The table wasn't even in its usual place, and she normally doesn't sit at the head of the table. (I know, I'm sure it was a totally different set - one that wouldn't be ruined by the sprinklers! But she didn't have to sit at the head of the table if they didn't want her to.) (I suppose that in a dream, we can sit wherever we want.)

I noticed during Ali and Tom's dinner, that Alicia managed to save her last bottle of wine yet again. I don't remember much about this from 2006; I wonder if the wine is symbolic of something else that Alicia is saving.

Regarding Tomas's look, I really like the pompadour. I had forgotten about that. Now there's a style that I really wish would come back into fashion, though admittedly it probably doesn't look great on everyone.

One last thought (for now) about the symbolism of the dream:

Past Lety has her eyes closed on the table and she isn't moving. Sometimes that means a person is asleep, but sometimes it means something else.

Previously, Lety said she felt as though she was dying. And Fern once told Omar that a person can die from sadness.

Past Lety dies. Future Lety is born.

Discuss!

Julie, since you like the pompadour look, I posted a photo I think you'll like.

Thanks, Paula, but no! Poor JC, that thing makes his head look soooo wide!! That's the wrong kind of pomp. Very 80s. (Maybe 90s? I don't remember!)

I like the kind that's just a pouf in the middle, like a crest on a bird.

I just posted about a slight comparison Fernando and Armando in the previous day's post...
But I agree that even at this point Fernando has just taken one little step but is not yet ready to turn the corner completely between the old Fernando obsessed with the company and his old life and the new Fernando in love with Lety. Mainly because as some of the foristas already posted, this 'feeling' is totally new to him so he still might have feelings for Lety but his selfishness still rules over at least his immediate decisions.
And I was paying attention and they did as much as they could in covering up Angelica's accidental cutting her hand... You see exactly when she realizes she cut her hand badly when she takes her hands up over her head and the blood begins to drop onto her shoulder and her dress, even noticed over the heavy rain.
Then the following scene we see her with a huge cast on her arm... several scenes later, back at the office we dont see a cast or covering on her hand at all, so the dream must have been taped after the scenes from next morning at Conceptos.
And I agree with most interpretaions of the dream, that the heavy rain might be the suffering she has gone through, the sad lety sitting at the table is 'dying' and the new Lety wants to get out and start anew...
