La Tempestad, cap. 4, Thursday, August 1: "Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach him how to fish, and he will sit in a boat and drink beer all day."
--George Carlin
Dam Fab's first caller, Marina Reverte, offers him a perfectly good way out of his dilemma -- Just marry Esthercita, you boob!
Meanwhile Hernán is doing an Eddie Haskell, sucking up to Marina's mom, Beatriz. He shows up at her house with a lovely bouquet of flowers for her. Poor deluded Beatriz is just happy Marina has someone in town she can call a friend. Because Marina is a bit late in arriving, Hernán and Beatriz set out for the Procession together.
[Um. Excuse me. He kind of is. If Michelangelo were around today, sweet William would be his David. But we'll give you time to catch up to the rest of us, babycakes.]
[M & M's are melting in hands all over the Patio. Keep your chocolates on ice, people.]
Shy Lázaro and tragic Jazmín are in an upstairs room at La Guacamaya. She is laboriously unbuttoning her dress while Lázaro looks away. Not only is it his first time, it turns out it's hers too. When he suggests they just talk -- he'll pay her just the same -- she eagerly accepts. What's his story? He lives with his widowed ma and yes, he's a happy guy. It takes a little prodding to get her to tell her story -- it would be dangerous and he might kill them both. He?
Now it's Little E's turn to visit Dam Fab. She blubbers drunkenly that she is sorry for getting him in trouble, but she didn't accuse him of anything. She loves him and doesn't regret what happened last night. Dam Fab reminds her that he's the one getting hauled off the prison. Besides what happened between them never should have happened in the first place. He sends her away. As she leaves, she makes a drunken vow: No one is going to do him harm.
Dam Fab's madrina walks along the shoreline at night, her walking stick in one hand, a basket of greens in the other. Suddenly she drops the basket, her hand flies to her heart, she loses her balance.
A dream-woman calls out: I'm in the sea, I live in the sea, my name is the sea -- come to me, come to me… Dam Fab walks into the sea until he is completely swallowed by the water.
[*Hey. I don't do birds. That's the best I can come up with.] She wakes up and calls out: Damián, ¿te sientes bien? (Are you okay?)
Mercedes approaches Beatriz and introduces herself as the person who hired Marina to run the plant. [Oh ho! So Beatriz doesn't know Mercedes!] Bea is gracious but expresses her doubts about the job. Mercedes, however, is sure that Marina is up to the challenge.
The Tempestad crew spots the crooked cops and they demand an explanation for Dam Fab's arrest. Fulgencio jumps in and screams that their captain is a scoundrel and Delfina says that he abused their daughter. Now Miss Prissy Marina joins the fray and says it's all a lie. Little E went to bed with Captain Fabré because that's what she decided to do. Fulgencio gets all "How dare you…" but Marina stands her ground. She heard the truth from Little E herself. Her parents put Dam Fab in jail because they didn't want the real story to come out.

DAMN FABULOUS, right?
I still think WL is ugly with that hair, but looking at his body helps a lot :)
So far my favorite character is Esthercita, the girls knows how to make a scene...
Ximena N is very pretty and she and WL make a decent pair, so far. She is really making an effort to do a good job with the part, although she still has a lot to learn.
I really don't care about Lazaro and his new lady friend, I hope this B plot doesn't take to much air time.
"They listen to him because, for all their macho posturing, their drinking, their whoring, their fighting, they are all good Catholic boys." Perfection. "Ful-of-himself" and "overprotective scold" were just a few more of my favs.
Adriana Noel, I loved Dam Fab too, but I suspect, it might mean Damian Fab?
I'm enjoying the "mating dance". Right now neither Dam nor Marina are cutting each other slack, but a begrudging respect seems to be slowly emerging. Of course, Dam has to leave his neanderthal ideas behind and try to join the 21st century in order to truly progress.
"Ful-of-himself" is dominating his scenes with his fury (and those dulcet tones - sigh)...
Hernán has no charm (for me) whatsoever. Marina doesn't seem all that impressed either.
Now that Esthecita has drunkenly revealed (to the entire town) that Dam is innocent, she was the pursuer, and that she lied, it will be interesting to see how and if her reputation will ever be restored. Isn't one of the virtues of being a good vilain the ability to do your dirty work and sow your seeds of discontent, quietly and behind the scenes? ;)
NovelaMaven, thank you for starting my day off so well.
Diana
Me too! And I would proudly take the walk of shame with my head held high!
Thanks for the cute recap NM.
Cynderella
Cynderella, now THAT would be a truly good walk of shame... one can only wish...
Thanks so much for this fab recap!
I'm surprised by Estercita. I never thought she would confess to the whole town. I feel sorry for her, with that putz of a Papa. And the Get Thee To a Nunnery, really???
I like how Marina is standing up for him, when she really doesn't like his behavior toward her. I agree he does need to wake up and smell, well the coffee and get with the times. After he dumped her in the drink she is still defending him. Hmmmmm.......
Hernan is a big brown noser. Suck up to Mummy and get in good with her. That said, I too like the way he is defending Marina to Fool Gen Cio. So who is the boss of whom here?
I wonder what the past is between Mercedes and Michel? She was rubbing that grave rather lovingly.
Looking forward to tonight see what the plan is!
Madelaine, you had me chuckling with "She was rubbing that grave rather lovingly" - great line.
Diana
I really enjoyed this episode...well, what I really loved was Estercita's epic drunken confession in front of the whole town. She is very entertaining. But, if I were her, I wouldn't return home. I'd take refuge with the priest. If Foolgencio slapped her around when he privately found out she boinked Dam Fab, just think about how he'll react to her making a spectacle of herself and their family in front of the town.
It's hard to choose a favorite line, but I really liked the bit about the crew's drinking and whoring but being good Catholic boys. And Dam Fab ('fraid that's a keeper folks) and Ful-of-himself-io are inspired brilliance. And comparing Hernan to Eddie Haskell...well you nailed that one.
"M&Ms are melting all over the patio", snort! Mayuya "determined to keep the ice on her friend's head" had me cracking up because that poor actress was having a heck of a time what with Estercita rolling her head all over the place.
Speaking of Estercita, can Laura Carmine chew up a scene or what? Wow! Between her wailing, Cesar Evora's epic blustering, and Monica Miguel's fainting spells I think we are in for a roller coaster ride. Can't wait!
Thanks again NM. I do love the way your mind works. Thanks for sharing it with us and taking us along for the ride.
Fab Dam would be a better name for guapisímo.
Saw the Sabrito commercial, cute
So how many is that?
M&M
Samsung
Wireless TV, which I guess is also Samsung
Sabrito
Pepsi
I read about Ruffles potato chips but haven't seen it
He is delicious!
Suffice it to say that whenever I see Dam Fab written in a recap, what I think is Damn Fabulous - and that is a simple, yet effective way to describe WL.
I also love the soundtrack, when they first started airing LT in Mexico I was obsessed with it and now the obsession is back.
Today I'm cleaning the house, while listening this and Mijares on repeat - ohh, good times!
"Um. Excuse me. He kind of is."
and
"M&M's are melting in hands all over the Patio. Keep your chocolates on ice, people."
Excellent.
It's only the 4th episode and they already brought on the white bird. Wow. Cue the rats.
Carlos
The Storm Cellar™ is now open for business and will, of course, be offering a specialty line of Tempestad and TempeStud products. Anita has been invited to be a full partner as well as administrator of the store. Marina Reverte is studying her contract. We can expect a reply from Anita shortly.
Some of you might be interested in the entry I found in an etymological dictionary in the book department of The Storm Cellar:
Dam Fab: 1. A nickname formed by shortening the first and last names of the character, Damián Fabré. 2. A play on words based on the homophony of 'Dam' and 'damn' in English and the common use of 'damn' as an intensifier. 3. An allusion to the BBC sitcom, Absolutely Fabulous, or Ab Fab. 3. An allusion to David Zepeda's horny robot, Dam Stoopid, in The Passion Pits, beside which Levy's Dam Fab looks like Olivier.
In other words, Diana and Adriana Noel -- you are both right!
[snort]
Really liked your crisp rendition of the "mating dance" between these two pretty protagonists, and like everybody else that delicious quote "because for all their macho posturing, their drinking, their whoring, they're all good Catholic boys." Riiiight.
And a personal favorite
"Je ne regrette rien". I'll have Edith Piaf singing in my head all day, and will enjoy every minute of it.
Haven't seen this yet, had to sub for another teacher in an early morning class, but given your description of the madrina weirdness and Fulgencio's rumblings, can't wait! Thanks NM.
I'll say it again. Love Laura Carmine!
Love the new nickname - Dam Fab is perfect for the character and WL....isn't he Fab even with the bad hair? Great chemistry with Ximena in the jail cell scene....that smile after the slap...those M&M's are definitely melting!
Good episode, but the recap is totally AB FAB! Can't wait for more recaps from NovelaMaven!
[Um. Excuse me. He kind of is. If Michelangelo were around today, sweet William would be his David. But we'll give you time to catch up to the rest of us, sweetcheeks.]" it funny cuz all last night, I kept saying to myself too ...Dam Fab.. and he sure is.
One for the books. (I'm sure Anita has already noted this)...
Only 4 episodes in and the recaps and comments are in the stratosphere.
Diana
I STILL haven't found time to watch this, what with trying to nail everything down so I can go on vacation, but one of these days I am going to catch up and join in the fun. I am so excited that The Storm Cellar is already open! I'm guessing there's a good stock of cork-soled shoes?
This episode was my favorite so far. I loved Esthercita's drunken speech to the entire town. I am glad she told the truth and that Damian was set free.
Hernan's good manners and smile are so fake!! Poor deluded Beatriz indeed. I wonder how Hernan knew where Marina lives. Did Marina tell him where she live or was he stalking her again? Hmm.
I want to be in on the joke.
Esthercita is to much, with her: "Yeah, I tapped that a.ss!" When she was saying how much she enjoyed it, too, the camera gave us a close up of Marina... I predict some horny dreams in her future - and possibly ours, too - btw, have any of you ever dreamed with a tn actor?
And how I tried...
But I did dream a soap actor a few years ago.
Form outside the tn world, I wouldn't mind Matt Bomer showing up in my dreams (I know he's gay, but I won't hold that against him).
A STORM CELLAR (also called a storm shelter) is an underground space, kind of like a basement, where people go for safety during severe weather, particularly tornadoes. If you have ever seen the movie, The Wizard of Oz, you may remember Dorothy's family running to the storm cellar for safety.
Cellar (basement or underground level of a dwelling, sometimes used for storage) and seller (vendor or someone who sells something) sound alike in English.
As you know, La Tempestad can be translated as "the storm."
So there you have it -- another play on words. "El sótano de la tempestad," or "la tienda de la tormenta" -- well you get the idea, right?
Adriana Noel, I continue to be amazed that anyone is worrying about WL's hair. Prioritize, woman!!! :D
Diana, I'm also interested in seeing where Little E's future lies. The writers have certainly given her some of the meatiest lines so far and she has made the most of them.
Cyn, Thanks. So you're identifying with LittleE?
Mads, Keep your eye on Hernán, especially in the scenes with Ful-of-himself-io. He holds his own as an actor. Also check out the shot of him in the titles when he's leaning back, shirtless on his boat. It gives you a little hint of what La Reina del Sur fans saw in this actor.
Vivi, yeah, Fulgencio is a scary guy. No woman is safe in his house.
Sylvia, you know that a great part of the pleasure here is that mind meld thing, imagining how our CarayCaray buddies are going to see and describe what we see on the small screen. I'm thrilled that you found something to enjoy here. Now careful with that tea.
OK; help me; I also want in on the storm cellar joke; and I know what a storm cellar is.
OK; what is the significance of the dove flying on the woman in white I guess in her dream (or trance?).
Does any one else think Jasmin might be the other twin? Or is she too young?
Carlos. Please no. No rats. Though we should start keeping track of magical omens and Objects Fraught With Significance. So: white bird, rag doll, what else?
JudyB, When Little E said "No me arrepiento," I thought almost simultaneously of you and Edith. [No kidding.] I was tempted to use it (Je ne regrette rien) as a title but didn't quite have the nerve.
Did I tell you I am tickled pink that you are watching and discussing this one? yay!
Marta in NY, Thanks! As I said above, I agree about Laura. (She may end up outshining the protagonista, don't you think?)
Lainda, I don't know if you've commented before but I am very glad to see you here and grateful for your nice words. Yes, hair schmair! :)
Shallowgal,
"I am so relieved they didn't prolong that "he raped me' storyline."
Amen! That could have been one dismal plot thread but instead it was a real firecracker.
Julia,
"I am so excited that The Storm Cellar is already open! I'm guessing there's a good stock of cork-soled shoes?"
Yes. I believe you will find them with the Personal Flotation Devices, Non-Surgical Division.
Mauricio, Thanks for posting the toothpaste commercial. And good question about how Hernán knew where Marina lives (though it is a small pueblo). Speaking of stalking, it turns out Mercedes is one up on him. He's been stalking Marina since high school but Mercedes has been stalking Beatriz and Marina for what? Twenty-five years? Sheesh.
Eli, Little E as Magdalena? Hah. Well the name would fit. I guess we'll have to wait and see. :)
About the Storm Cellar -- check out my comment above at 4:56 and let me know if it doesn't make sense, ok?
About the white bird -- in Christianity, a white dove represents the Holy Spirit or peace. But in telenovelas and dreams -- who knows?
Jazmín as the missing twin? Could be. But I'd be surprised -- she doesn't have the 'glam' factor. Personally, I'm hoping the twins are identical since that opens the door to a horde of hokey plot devices. (A big challenge for newcomer, Ximena, though)
I didn't know about the Crest comm. He sure has the smile for it.
I have no doubt he makes more on the comms than the novela. He'll get residuals every time it's shown.
Good boy, he seems to have problems with property foreclosures.
Anyhoo, I decided to give myself a treat and re-read your recap. I highly recommend this because there are so many NM gems in it.
How could I have failed to notice "[Let's hope he gets some heroics under his belt before this is all over.]"? Oh my! I totally missed that adorable double entendre.
I'm thrilled that The Storm Cellar™ is now open for business. I was going to suggest PFDs until I read the comment about the cork shoes. I would definitely approve Marina's cork shoes as a suitable substitute for any USCG approved lifejacket.
NM, your crack about "under his belt" reminded me there seems to be a dearth of manly belt buckles in this one. Hmmm...are they only for the ranch?
Mauricio, this was my favorite episode too.
I think my favorite WL commercial so far is the Pepsi Next where he's wearing an incredibly fake-looking Tom Selleck moustache (yeah yeah, I know it's called The Chevron). He just looks so '70s and smarmy.
But as a long-time NM fan, I know you write like gangbusters no matter what else is going on.
So listen up Universe! No more bad days for our gal NM. Just keep her computer plugged in and her wit on fire and we'll all be just fine.
About those belt buckles -- wouldn't you sink like a stone wearing one of those babies?
Speaking of belt buckles, am I imagining it or do I see Sergio Reynoso's name flying by in the credits? Have we ever seen him without a giant belt buckle?
Pepsi Next has its appeal but WL romancing the M&M lady cracks me up every single time I see it.
:)
this sealed the deal for me at 08:37
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CVQ--8lU9jE
And I agree with you that Little E may indeed outshine our protaganista. Laura Carmine is so great at portraying these on-the-edge characters. I can't imagine another actress playing this role as well as she.
Loved the video, Shallowgal -- gracias!
yes, Sylvia, don Gagorio! [As Sara would say -- squee!!!]
Someone mentioned the B plot, and I have to agree. I am not sure I am overly interested in L and J at this point, will see how that evolves. Kinda feel Laz needs to man up a lil.
I like CE but, the slapping around of wife and daughter is not working for me. Of course, he is a terrible guy that Fulg.
Thank you and a excellent recap!
Long hair has never been my thing, I guess that's why I'm having such a hard time with this. Ah, well, I'll suffer through it like a big girl.
NovelaMaven - thank you for explaining the Storm Cellar bit, I knew what it was, but I didn't think about the play on words.
This tn will be a jewel!
Filene's Basement -- yes! Exactly! Well played. :)
El Green, Anon 11:25 and Ron O'Gorman -- thanks so much for the nice words.
Adriana, I agree. A jewel. A great big tacky Mejía jewel! jejeje.
NOvelamaven, how do I love thee ?...let me count the ways... (I thought I would thrown a little Browning into the mix. ) loved the new nickname..Ful-of-himself-io is classic...Himself is the greatest villain ever. Dam Fab/Fab Dam was great. Maybe it depends on if we are happy or unhappy with his behavior. Bad Dam could be Dam Fab and good Dam could be Fab Dam.
I have only seen the first episode, so I am anxious to see all the characters I haven't seen yet. I am excited about so many Alborada alumni being together again ..Daniela Roma ( Mercedes/Dona Juana), our old nemesis the cape wearing Gasca , and Monica Miguel ( loyal Modesta in Alborada). Which character is Monica playing in this novela ?
Also loved the Eddie Haskell reference...Hello, Mrs. Cleaver, is Wally home , mam ? So many clever thoughts, Novelamaven
I also love the synergy at Caraycaray. One person has a thought ..throws it out...and six other people add their own ideas. What a think tank..such excellent brainstorming.
Drunk Ester will create lots of comments. I especially liked her mermaid dress for the festival in the first episode. can you imagine her in a convent ???
AS for seabirds, I can identify only a few : gulls, pelicans, sandpipers, albatrosses. Speaking of gulls, a flock of them bombarded my daughter's friend after they dropped a stolen sandwich on the sand and she tried to kick it away . Gulls are bold and brassy if you have so much as a morsel of food on the beach. They hover and then will land and walk right onto your beach towel to try to steal it. I am always reminded of poor Tippy Headron in Hitchcock's "The Birds." Gross and scary.
Moniga Miguel plays Dam Fab's psychic madrina. Estercita's whiny mother is played by Lucero Lander who was Sor Teresa in Alborada, and I just notice you've already tagged corrupt policeman Valdivio as Alborada's Higinio. Those are the only other Alborada alum's that I recognize.
Novelamaven, so sorry that you had a Judy Viorst terrible, awful day. Hope that things are better today. You brought so many smiles and laughs to us here at caray2 even though you were having an unhappy day.. Thank you, Amiga, and I am sending you good vibrations for better days ahead )))))
Ooh, ooh...I have a product that I think might be a best seller at The Storm Cellar. I always enjoy reading the tee shirts at the stores selling "crap-from-afar "(remember that one from one of the commenters of FELS ?) This year the following quote was very popular and seen on tank tops in almost all the crappy shops ..."Sun's out, guns out ." Hub told me that he heard a woman ask a clerk " What does that mean ?...Where are the guns ?"
Sandy beaches, babies, dogs, family intimacy in close quarters -- all wonderful things, clearly, but now you deserve a little me time on your Own Private Patio. Enjoy.
You're so right -- the synergy on this blog really is amazing.
As for playing the "Where are they now?" game -TN actor version, I keep thinking of Daniela R as Doña Bernarda in Mejía's Triunfo del Amor where SHE was the villainous baby-snatcher (and Victoria Ruffo got to clutch a rag dog and blubber for "mija"). Daniela's scene here as a young mother sobbing in the rain and dark of night for the daughter who has been taken from her is almost identical to Victoria's in TdA. Sr Mejía does like to quote himself.
WL was the "It Boy" in TdA, although admittedly something of a mama's boy and a fop (he even sported the occasional ascot). In that one, he only had a kayak. Now he gets a big, honkin' fishing boat.
And César Évora was a great and wonderful Wizard of Telenovela Medicine, not an evil meanie.
Thank you for your kind words and good wishes. I appreciate them enormously.
My strongest memory of Daniela is her wonderfully evil Dona Juana in Alborada with her devoted Modesta by her side.
I remember watching the first episode of TdA and at the end, when the credits started rolling, I wanted to change the channel, but then I stopped, to gaze at Levy's kayaking skills...you know, in case I ever decide to get into sports.:D
