La Sombra Del Pasado #20 Discuss

I over slept this morning and was almost an hour late for work! I'm in the doghouse so no recap from me today, I'm so sorry-please discuss the episode below :/

Next: Episode 21

Oh no, Eli! But work and real life comes first.

So sorry, Eli! I hope you didn't get into too much trouble at work!

well, I cannot understand much dialogue, but I saw that Renato met AL at an outdoor cafe to give her the letter from Rob. Mari (Lardo's sister) spied on them and then ran to tell Lola at her mom's shop about the guaypo hombre she saw with Al. I am confused. Is Mari friends with Valley Girl Val and Lola ? Lola told Dom the news about Al's goodlooking beau and showed her a photo that Mari took of him with her cellphone. Cris overheard this conversation and looked crestfallen. He and Val seemed to have a little disagreement , but then he hugged her . Val had that cat who ate the canary look on her face. Val and Pru had a conversation, and Val looked like a rude, petulant teenager talking to her mother. AL, Tio Padre , and Tia all sat around the table and read Rob's letter. Then, AL went to the old waterfall and a guy told her it was private and owned by Hum. AL went to talk to Hum and seemed happy when she left, but then Severed cornered her in the waiting room and started groping her, so she stabbed him with a letter opener. YAY Hum came out and saw them. Sorry that I cannot translate what was said.

Question...Why isn't Lardo kept busy shoveling manure out of those horse stalls? All he ever does is lurk around the ranch eavesdropping on conversations and talking trash to Emm.

Quick and dirty, here we go...

-Renato made it to the SL.
-Joaquin is married with a kid. The kid is SUPER cute. The wife is SUPER bitchy.
-The town gossips have decided that Aldonza must be taking after her mother, thanks to seeing her with Renato.
-Mari sees them, but it's not enough info for Lola, who sends her to do a proper spying job.
-Melesio is not happy with Abelardo and the trouble he's causing for/with Cristobal, but Sev told him that was the plan.
-While Renato plights his troth and tells Aldonza that he'll wait until she's ready, Mari spies. She agrees with the gossips, though that he must be a "client." She also thinks he is SUPER fine.
-Valeria calls Cris out for being so "indifferent" to her since they came back to town. He blames his dad for putting pressure on him and her for being tiresome. Then he apologizes for being an ass and promises never to do it again. Hey, Val, ask him what happened the last time he made a promise to a girl!

And that gets us to the first commercial break....

After the opening credits....

-Emmanuel checks to see if Cris is doing ok. He wonders if maybe Valeria has heard that Aldonza is back in town, but Cris thinks that if Val or his mom knew that there would have been major drama already.
-Pru is trying to wedding plan, but even Val doesn't like her idea of holding the wedding at El Santuario. She thinks something is up with Cris and is furious that Pru pooh-poohs her that Cris ADORES her.
-Aldonza takes the letter back to Padre G's place to open it with him and Adelina. I won't give you a word-for-word, maybe someone else can do that or I'll do it later. It was basically Roberta saying goodbye, apologizing for being a bad mother, being sorry she didn't have the time to be a better mother, and then informing Aldonza that there was a part of the money from the sale of the property that she never touched. It's in an account in Aldonza's name and she hopes that between that and the apartment, it's a good enough inheritance for Aldonza to start a business of her own. I speculate the blood Roberta coughed on the letter may come into play later.

Commercials....

Agree with Vivi - life and work come first. Thanks for the quick and dirty 5ft!

Kat- I just started doing a quick and dirty recap, but I see you're in the midst of one. Will wait till you're done, then add anything that seems relevant.

-Mari and Lola get into a fight about Mari talking smack about Aldonza. Mari reminds Lola that Lola talks smack about Valeria all the time.
-(oops, got a little out of order...here's where Aldonza reads the letter)
-Lola (looks like for Cris' benefit) tells her grandmother about Aldonza being back in town, having coffee with a totally hot guy. Cris loses his appetite.
-Uriel goes to talk to Sev about Abelardo. Sev has recognized some of himself in Abelardo and assures Uriel that he knows how to handle him. He says he'll be firm with the little walking turd if he needs to--they won't coddle the boy the way his parents did. Uriel is relieved to hear it.
-This time, I think Aldonza went to El Santuario on purpose, to gather information. When a worker comes to shoo her off the property, he tells her it's Humberto's property, but Humberto "loans" a little bit of it to Severiano.

Oh, yes, Vivi! Fill in the details. I'm giving it about 1 sentence per scene....

-Mari tells Valeria that Abelardo told her back when she left for Spain that they had some, ahem, special moments together. Valeria is pissed that he said it, and somehow Mari fails to recognize that as an admission. News flash, Mari, "I sure as hell didn't!" would have been a denial..."How dare he tell!" not so much.
-Padre G and Lulu are frantically looking for a check we'll hear more about later.
-Aldonza goes to talk to Padre G about Humberto being owner of the land. She's upset that it's just sitting there going to waste, except for the part he's loaning Severiano...and doesn't that seem like quite a coincidence? Padre G reminds her that they're compadres, so not really.
-Abelardo taunts Emmanuel about not ratting him out to Cris for kissing Val. "Meh, I could tell it meant nothing to her." Abelardo taunts him about Val not being into Emmanuel, while Emmanuel pines for her. Emmanuel loses his temper and gets physical with Abe. Abe threatens to go to Severiano and tell him about Emmanuel being a big meanie to him.
-The mystery check is Candela's usual monthly donation to the church, without which, the church can't really function (according to Padre G). He assumed they'd received it and lost it but she forgot to send it.
-Mari tells Lola that her brother made up the whole thing about sleeping with Val.
-In the process of collecting the check, Candela asks about Padre's family business and hopes everything is ok. Well, it's not, Roberta is dead. Sev and Dominga overhear. I mentally kick Candela in the shins when she says she can't say she's sorry. Padre G says he's no one to judge her. Sev asks what she died from. "Suicide." Candela blames her lifestyle. Padre G gets awfully snippy for someone depending on Candy's charity, but quite rightly says that Roberta was sick with cancer and not everyone has the strength to face something like that. Candela bitterly offers Sev time alone with his tears.
-Surprisingly, he needs it! He swigs some booze and gets teary, reminiscing about Roberta. He calls his current mistress for comfort, but gets interrupted by Cris. Cris questions his excuses about a business deal falling through and eventually leaves him alone. A sweaty-eyeballed Sev was not what I expected!

Yes! I called that Roberta was leaving Aldonza money!

Thanks, Diva. . .carry on!

:D

Oops, ok, a little more than a sentence each! OK, last segment....

-Lola is upset that with everything Aldonza is going through, Aldonza hasn't gotten in touch with her.
-Humberto thinks Aldonza came to his office to confront him about the land sale being shady, but she just wanted to talk to him about renting her old house. Ah, forgot to mention that she told Renato she's staying in town. I don't think she's made that clear to anyone but him. Last I remember she told Adelina she wasn't going to leave quickly. Anyway...Humberto says they should talk about it in the morning. He's getting ready to leave for the day.
-Sev went to see Humberto about who-knows-what, but instead finds Aldonza in his waiting room, on the way out of the office and makes a lot of sleazy remarks about making her "feel like a woman again." She ends up stabbing him with a letter opener...in the junk? "I promised my mother I would never let you hurt me again!" Humberto heard the commotion and hears her last remark. I think he comes to the right conclusion, from the way he's looking at Sev...sort of grossed out.

Susanlynn, I'm disappointed that Abelardo isn't mucking, but that's all part of Sev's plan. Make him feel important so he'll lock horns with Cris and Cris will decide to stay.

Kat- I just did mine from memory, so I don't think it's any more detailed than yours. But we might have picked up on a few different things here and there, so here it is.

The highlights:

- Padre/Tio Jero tells Aldonza that Cris and Valeria are getting married, and it knocks the wind out of her. She recovers well and sashays through town like she’s on a catwalk. Girlfriend looks hot.
- Abelardo overhears Sever and Cande talking about putting on the pressure on Doc Humberto to hand over Santuario. Sever thinks financial pressure or incentive might be the answer, and needs to get a look at Humberto’s assets. The wheels turn in his head as to how to do that.
- Abelardo continues to do nothing and piss off Emmanuel, who foolishly thinks Sever will fire Lardo for doing nothing. He makes it clear to Lardo that he’ll put the beat down on him if he messes with him.
- Banker Uriel/Dad of Abelardo comes over to thank Sever for giving his “problem child” a job. Sever butters him up. That’s what friends are for. (We can bet he’ll want the favor returned. See last bullet about needing info about Humberto’s finances.)
- Renato finally finds Aldonza and they head for a coffee/tea at a café. The town gossips see them and instead of assuming the guapo rich looking guy is her husband/boyfriend/galan, they assume he is her lover who is maintaining her, and that Aldonza is a chip off the old Roberta block. They even disregard the fact that she is living with her priest uncle, and assume that she is meeting her lover in the local hotel. Mari overhears, spots Al and Renato, and runs to tell the gossip to Lola at work.
-Lola can’t leave work, so she sends Mari to spy on the two and send her back pics and gossip. Lola assumes Renato is Aldonza’s galan and is excited for her. Mari assumes the worst. The two argue and pick their sides. Mari is on Team Val. Lola is on Team Aldonza/Cris. However, Lola is really hurt that Aldoza hasn’t come to see her yet.
- Renato delivers the letter from Roberta (Al saves it for later), and declares his feelings for Aldonza. She turns him down easy and tells him she has no intention of returning to Mexico City. She’s staying. Renato’s heart breaks.
- Cris overhears Lola telling Dominga about Al’s galan and has a sad. Val notices his sulkiness and is also offended that he seems indifferent to her, the possibility that other men want her, and their wedding. He half-heartedly apologizes. Val complains to Pru about Cris, and shoots down Pru’s idea for a wedding at Santuario.
- Padre J goes to Mendoza Manor to pick up Cande’s monthly donation. He informs Cande, Sever, and Dominga that Roberta committed suicide and had cancer. Cande couldn’t care less. Sever seems to get nostalgic and almost weepy. (Is he sad he didn’t get the chance to finish her off himself?) Dominga is sad for Aldonza and tells Lola, who is even more sad that Al hasn’t come to see her, since Al for sure needs to be loved up and coddled (apapachar). Dominga wants them to attend the funeral mass.
-Aldonza opens the letter in front of Adelina and Padre. Roberta expresses her love and pride for Aldonza, and we flashback to the hospital bed when she wrote the letter. She coughs up blood onto the sheet of paper as she struggles to write the letter. She informs Aldonza that she took a part of the money from sale of the land and put it into an account in Aldonza’s name. Along with the apartment, this is Al’s inheritance and Roberta hopes she will be able to start a business with it.

- Adelina literally bumps into Joaquin in the market and meets his adorable little son ("It's raining!") and not so adorable wife who gives Adelina bitch face.
- Aldonza goes to sit by the falls and learns from the guard that throws her out that his boss/the owner is Doc Humberto, who rents a part of the land to Sever. Aldonza had always assumed it was Sever who bought the land from her mother for a steal. Padre confirms this and the wheels start turning in her head.
- Aldonza goes to see Doc Humberto and offers to rent a part of the land and the house. She’ll pay a lot up front. He says he’ll think about it. As she’s leaving his office, Sever comes in and immediately gets rapey with her. She seems scared, and backs herself onto a desk, where she slyly grabs a letter opener and STABS the bastard in the abdomen. As he screams and they struggle, Doc Humberto runs out. Aldonza separates from Sever and tells him she’s doing what she swore to her mother she would do- never allow him to hurt her again!

Thanks Kat, and Eli, work comes first. We've all been there done that with the oversleeping at one time. Never worry about us. Hope the day got better.

Boy, Sev is a real piece of work. He actually tears up over Roberta and than before he his eyes dry he's molesting her daughter. Nice one. Hope Allie got him good and love that it was all seen and overheard.

Do we really have to have the obligatory town gossips in this show? It was going so well...and why the h*** would it be assumed that the cute guy with Allie has to be a "client". She not allowed friends or perhaps a boyfriend. Girl has been gone for how many years? Honestly, stupid. Expected a little better from Mari, but she was taken with our out of town cutie, so I'm going to go with my first thought from a few days ago, she doesn't get Emmanuel, she may wind up with Renato. Lord the eye candy in this TN is fine.

And can I say, Allie strutting her stuff so confidently as she ran into Val was priceless.

Daisynjay

I swear, I'm not a violent person, but that letter opener had to have hurt way more than something sharper and I take a vicious kind of delight in that. Hm...ok, maybe I am a violent person.

Vivi, I don't know how you do it! You manage to get all the actual events, plus the possible connections, plus the commentary, and it's all very clear and concise, and you even had vocabulary! You're so right, Aldonza DID look hot and she sure looked good on Renato's arm strolling through town. But, really, what a conservative outfit for an alleged ho. I roll my eyes in the general direction of the gossips!

One little bit about Lola and Mari...Mari thought the guy was giving Aldonza a "look" and Lola asked if it was "de lujuria o de amor" (lust or love) and Mari thought it was a little of both. That just struck me as sort of cute, along with Mari's general state of interest in Renato. What do you think--are they setting up a Mari-Renato match? And how the hell are they going to pull that off if Aldonza is staying in SL and he's going back to the DF?

I think Severiano was genuinely sad to hear about Roberta, which is bizarre 'cause he's a heartless bastard. Maybe he's feeling sorry for himself? That there's one less woman out there to terrorize? That's easier to believe than that he "loved" her in some twisted way.

LOL, Daisynjay, I see we had the same thoughts about Mari with Renato :D I'd like for Lola to end up with Emmanuel. I just hope it doesn't take him too long to realize he's much better off with Lola than mooning over Val.

Kat- I think I even made the thrusting motion with my own hand when Aldonza stabbed him. LOL!

Yeah, I was laughing at the love or lust conversation, and Mari's answer, too. Lola and Mari are like two sides of the same coin. Both a little goofy and excitable, but Lola has good instincts about people and knows good peeps when she sees them. Mari is an idiot and swallows all the crap Val tells her.

Ha, Vivi! I feel better hearing that :D

I think you're right, and it was the guts she stabbed him in. I saw fabric-floor-fabric and my mind immediately filled in "LEGS!" but it must have been the jacket pulling away from his body. Either way works for me. Good grief, and the blood on her hand! That was not an insignificant amount! And was it just me, or did we not hear the sound of the letter opener hitting the floor?

I'm glad we got to see Roberta again. I would not mind a daily Roberta flashback.

Eli, no apologies necessary. I hope your day improves and best wishes for a good night.

Susanlynn, Kat and Vivi, thank you all so much for your splendid details! So very helpful...

Like everyone else, I was stunned at Sev's reaction to Roberta's passing! Did he actually CARE or was he only sorry she was no longer around to torment? That said, if there was indeed any sadness or remorse, it certainly did not carry over to Aldonza, did it?? I know she was afraid but I wish she had not let him see her palpable fear! I hope that letter opener was long and sharp. Blech...

Oh, and the only thing I can contribute was I noticed Cande took the time to look at herself in the mirror and pat her braids when she was told the Padre was waiting. Are there some unrequited feelings there?? Hmmm.

Thanks again for all the excellent details.

I cannot believe how fast these episodes fly. It seems like the show begins and then it ends.

I still miss Susana.

Diana

Well, Diana, let's think...Candela lives with Sev, who she hates...Humberto is her cousin...Melesio works for her...I guess Padre G is the only other option :p He may be wearing a collar, but he's got his little something-something. That little twinkle to the eyes. The attitude. Wouldn't be a bad catch at all. Too bad he's married to the Church!

Haven't read any comments yet, but just wanted to say that was a mighty satisfying stabbing with what looked like a letter opener. Go Aldonza! Hope you got him where it hurts.

Kat, I don't know what their history is, how long they've known each other, but there is something there on her part...

The padre is quite the catch. But of course he is taken and perhaps that might be part of the allure? ;)

I sense Cande may have a secret or two buried in her past...

Diana

Thanks Susanlynn, Diva and Vivi! And thank you, Eli! It's all good!

So glad about the money thing, I'm learning to pick up clues from earlier conversations. . .no way good at it.

So, using this nascent "skill" I'm going to revisit the "man that used to be in your life" thing Dominga said. Could it have been Padre. It wouldn't surprise me if he never showed anything in his affect, in his mirada when he first saw Cande again after so much time: He is a sage and serious man of the cloth and he would never disrespect his commitment to the Church or Sev by even recalling past feelings for her with even a single facial expression. I'm linking this to the primping before she met with Padre.

Anywho. Weird three-way friendship between Mari, Val and Lola: that's gonna bring good and bad to Cris and Aldonza!

I hope Sev is hurt bad, real bad!

Cris. You need a nap. Clear your head. Do you good, boy!

Diana- In one of the episodes after Padre comes back, they have a conversation where it's mentioned that they have known each other since they were kids.

Eli: hope your day is going better!

Diva and Vivi: Thanks for the extensive list of comments that actually equaled a super comprehensive recap!

Vivi: I had a soup-spoon in my hand when Sev came at Aldonza, and I was stabbing the air with it.

It was a great episode, lots of heppenings. I'm not watching with sharp instruments in my hand, though..

J in Oregon

I'm speaking of Padre and Cande.

Well, it would be awfully embarrassing for Cande, but...is it possible that SHE had a thing for him, but he never noticed her and before she could make a play he decided to go be celibate? Talk about a blow to the ego!

That's possible Diva. Maybe when I get a little time I'll go back and see exactly what Dominga said. It could well be Cande was the one that took a shine to Jeronimo (never know whether to use "J" or "G").

Hey, are Jeronimo and Raimundo from Santa Lucia? If so, does anybody have any feeling for what Padre and Sev think of each other?

I'm not sure if it's J or G either. I don't want to go look at a cast list because I have spoilerphobia :D

Lila- Yes. They are from Santa Lucia. It was mentioned by both Padre and Jeronimo that they inherited the land from their parents. (There is still the mystery of why Sever feels Santuario was righfully his.)

In the cast list and I think in the opening credits it's with a J.

A big thank you Diva and Diva.

I can't believe how good this show is.

The advance monkeys were playing with us Friday. I had thought that Sever came into Aldonza's apartment to harass her but no, he came into the doctor's office.
I thought that the hidden object in the hand was something that Sever had and was going to use it to hurt Aldonza. Wrongo bongo. It was a letter opener that Aldonza smartly grabbed and I must say that she used it affectively, although I did remember saying to myself that I wished that she had plunged it into that bastard twice at least.

I can't wait for tonight when Aldonza meets Lola. That will be nice I'm sure.

I have been wondering if Lardo may have known Rubio and maybe had attended Rubio's school of lurking.

I wonder how Sever is going to explain his stab wound to cande?

I am counting the hours till La Sombra tonight.
the gringo

Lardo wishes he were Rubio! Rubio had more initiative and work ethic.

Diana---You said that you still miss Susana. I've got it so bad that I actually went to Youtube over last weekend and played portions of earlier episodes so that I could see Susana again. It's true, the gringo's own true story.
the gringo

I rather like the idea of Cande having an Achilles heel where the Padre is concerned. Maybe it gives her some hope in being reached at some point if he is the one who can reach her. I did catch that little looksee in the mirror and thought it kind of cute...and terribly girlish and insecure in a way. Betcha you guys are right and Hunk a Padre was her schoolgirl crush. I can see it now, he doesn't notice her, or she takes his vocation as a rejection and moves to "bad boy" Seve in a knee jerk reaction. No love, just lust. I want those flash backs!!

Daisynjay

Diva and Vivi...Thanks to both of you. I get the visuals , but I only get about 10% of the words.

Hey, Vivi..When I refer to the two of you , would you mind if I called you ''Diva and Viva ? '' What a dynamic duo !

Susanlynn- Hah! I love that.

Thanks for all the comments, everyone. I wish Aldonza had a knife instead of a letter opener and had done a Lorena Bobbitt on Sev, and ... severed... his .... brain .... er ..... appendage.

We have quite a few mysteries floating around Santa Lucia:
- What is Cande's past that Domingo refers to?
- Why does Sev Think that El Santuario should be his
- Who are Lola's parents because I do not believe for one minute that Dominga has no idea how her daughter (Lola's mother) died or where she is buried.
- We do not know who are Emanuelle's parents.

Maybe Lola's mother is still alive. Maybe Sev's paramour got pregnant by Dom's son and did not want the baby, so she left her . Then, the son left/died and Dom and Mel raised the baby. In tns, people are always connected to each other.

Doris- Lola's father was their son, but yes a lot of mystery there. But I think Lola is their grandchild because of the way Dominga told Cande off about the way Cande treats HER family, and Cande was visibly humbled. On the flip side of that, the total lack of tolerance Cande has for Emmanuel tells me pretty clearly just who his parents are. But I'm sure the writers will continue to play with us and might have a surprise or two.

so..now that AL skewered Sev, what happens next ? I can imagine the conversation.

Cris: ''Why did you stab my dad With a letter opener?"" Aldonza: '' Because I didn't have a knife or a machete , and he was going to take me AGAIN.''

"Because I didn't have a knife or a machete" is kinda perfect all on its own.
