La Sombra Del Pasado, Capitulo #21, 03-17-2015

Recap by HellaShelle

Previously on LSDP: We are forced to relive Aldonza’s living nightmare. Severiano backs her into one corner after another while she squirms away. He finally backs her up against the desk and Aldonza grabs a letter opener behind her back. She warns him that if he takes one more step she can’t be held responsible for what she does next. Unfortunately for Severiano, he’s still living in the past while Aldonza’s determined not to relive it. This time she fights back by stabbing him!

Hoy: Humberto comes out in time to hear Aldonza declare that she promised her mother that she wouldn’t let Sev hurt her again. She flees the scene while Hum holds a raging Sev back. The red cloud in front of Sev’s eyes clears long enough for him to realize that he should deal with the stab wound and he demands loudly, rudely and repeatedly that Hum help him (even though Hum is already escorting him into the office so that he can stitch him up.)

In the town center, Valeria is getting lessons from the queen of the telenovela demon wives. Cande brushes off Vale’s worries. Vale admits that she doesn’t think Cristobal is in love with her, but Cande thinks that maybe her son isn’t capable of loving. The thing with Aldonza was infatuation, not love, and anyway love inevitably fades with time, so Vale shouldn’t waste her time worrying about it (anyone else a lil surprised that she would reveal this much about her world view/crack in the picture perfect facade?). Vale insists she wants Cris to love her like a love song baby, but Cande is all about realism: life is what it is, not what we want it to be. She wants Vale to focus on the fact that she’s marrying THE CRISTOBAL MENDOZA and leave the petty love stuff for the fairy tales. Love is a contract. It’s not as beautiful to think of it that way, but much more practical and binding than the fairy tale.

Aldonza runs through the streets of Santa Lucia. Must be the back streets, because no one seems to be around to see her frantic race or the panicked way she scrubs her blood covered hands on the hem of her white dress. She finally finds a dark corner bench and tries to calm down.

Cris is waiting for his intended at her house with a semi-sloshed Prudencia for company. She tries to ply him with coffee that she should prob be drinking, but he declines. She tries to get his support for the Santuario Reception, but he gives the same arguments as his mom (plus he adds that they’ll just fill it with trash). Pru cuts to the tough stuff: it’s really that he doesn’t want to bring up bad memories, isn’t it?

Cande continues her dysfunctional marriage lecture. She warns Vale not to waste her time trying to make herself a victim because Cris is going to marry her and that’s all that matters. If he’s not in love with her yet, then that’s something Vale just needs to work on, if it’s even possible. Vale notes that Cande and Sev have been a well-respected couple of years, but Cande says they’re there to talk about her marriage, but the upcoming one. Vale presses: what does she have that I don’t have? We can practically hear Cande asking herself that question all those years ago…Well, Cande might not know how to make a man fall in love, but she knows how to keep him by her side in just 2 easy steps: 1) become indispensable. Like the sole of his shoe, make it so that he can’t take a step without you. Guess that’s why Vale’s a Zapata. 2) Learn his motivations and secrets and how to take away his shame and his fears. This is Vale’s new life’s homework. It might not make Cris fall in love, but at least it will keep him from falling for someone else  (because between him mom and Vale, he will think all women are insane control freaks). Vale heard all of that…but she’s gonna make Cris love her, yes she is, yes she is.

Vale finally gets home, but Cris is ready to go. He reinforces that they’re not having anything at the Santuario, and it has nothing to do with the past. Where did Pru even get such an idea? Pru slurs that Vale herself thinks that. Vale’s totally red faced over it, but Cris declares that Vale is the only woman he loves. That being said, he’s rather not hang out with the love of his life right now. Vale asks him to stay since she just got home, but he takes his leave. Vale snaps at her mom for making her look so jealous and insecure, but Pru doesn’t see what the big deal is.

Cris runs into Emmanuel, who advises him to tell Vale that Aldonza’s back in town before she hears it from someone else. Cris is surprised Emmanuel wants to support their relationship, but E shows that he might be the only character in TN history to really understand love is by letting Cris know that whatever his feelings towards Vale, he cares about them both so he wants them to have a good marriage. They hug it out.

Aldonza gets home and tries to hide what’s up, but Adelina sees the blood and wants to know what happened. At first Aldonza claims she cut her hand, but since there is no cut she has to come clean and admit to Adelina and PadrJ that she stabbed Sev. (Tsk tsk. She has no problem lying to religious folks, does she).

Back at Hum’s office, Sev is patched up and will be fine with some antibiotics and pain pills. Sev starts swearing revenge, but Dr. Hum says he got what he deserved. Hum saw what was going down and if asked, he won’t cover for Sev, he’ll tell the truth. Sev reminds him that they’ve both crossed the line more than once, so Hum shouldn’t start trying to be a good guy this late in the game. Sev wanted to settle the matter of El Santuario but now he’s not in the mood. He pays for the consult, takes the pills and leaves.

Adelina is furious: how dare that man try to out his hands on Aldonza again! Aldie says it doesn’t matter. Her eyes glitter with just a hint of hysteria and the adrenaline seems to still be pumping in her as she claims that now Sev knows she’s not the same stupid little girl from before; now, she can defend herself. Adelina’s not so sure and suggests they get outta Dodge and start fresh again, but Aldonza’s determined not to run from her problems again. Adelina wants to know what Aldie was doing at Hum’s office anyway. Aldie tells her she wants to rent the old house. Hum didn’t give her answer tonight, but he’s promised to think about it.

Cande’s getting ready for bed and looks through some old photos with surprisingly happy nostalgia. One falls to the ground as Cris comes in to see how her meeting with Vale went. She says it was the usual – dresses, and wedding whatnot. Cris laughingly says his future MIL ran him off. Cris finds the fallen photo and asks who’s in it. Cande looks panicked.

Dr. Hum has brought up the idea of renting the Santuario house with Pru, but she doesn’t know who would want to rent a broken down place with such a bad name…unless it’s to turn it into a brothel! Before she can lets her imagination run wild, Hum wearily reigns it in, telling her to forget about it, she’s right, no one would want to rent it. He settles into bed and asks how her day went. She hems a little, Pru style, and he basically rolls his eyes and asks who’s trying to ruin her life now. She tells him to hyuck it up if he wants; he clearly doesn’t understand what it is to give birth to a child and watch them leave you and not even take your opinions into account. Vale ignores her, Cande controls everything and even Cris isn’t on her side and...Hum’s already knocked out.
Cande has taken the photo and avoids answering Cris, saying they’re just some old friends that hse had long before marrying Sev. She gives the photo back to Cris and whaddaya know, PadrJ and Ray are in the picture. Cris is surprised because that means they weren’t always mortal enemies. No, Cande agrees. She never had anything against Raymundo. Things just soured when he got involved with…well, an inconvenient woman. That and El Santuario, Cris adds. Cande doesn’t want to talk about it and she’s tired. Cris wants to know why she and Sev never want to tell the full feud history, but whatevs. They kiss goodnight and Cande looks off into the distance.

Sev meets Cris on the stairs and Cris notes that he looks pain. Sev says it’s nothing, but Cris also wants to ask why Sev didn’t buy the Santuario when the Alcocers left. Sev says it wasn’t a good time because of the problems with Roberta – the accusations of arson and all. Cris is still surprised since the land borders theirs and Sev still uses it anyway. Life’s full of coincidences, Sev replies, but why doesn’t Cris get to what’s really bothering him: does he think his dad could do something underhanded or dishonest? No, Cris’s faith in his dad is rock solid. Papa’s glad to hear it because jealous people say crazy things…Cris would trust his dad more if he’s explain how the feud over El Santuario got started. Neither Sev nor Cande ever wants to explain it. Ok, Sev says he’ll tell him. They go to the office.

Apparently el Santuario used to belong to Sev’s family long ago, but Sev’s grandpa (appropriately named Justiniano) was up to his neck in debt to Aldonza’s drunken, gambling grandpa (well, that’s how he looks in the flashback). Justi gave over El Santuario as payment and died penniless. Sev never recouped the land. We get confirmation that Las Animas belongs to Cande’s family and Sev’s just been working it. So, Cris points out, if Sev got el Santuario back then he wouldn’t be – Sev cuts him off: “wouldn’t be what? Your mother’s employee?” Cris didn’t mean that, of course, but Sev knows that’s what he was thinking. Cris admits that yeah, the thought crossed his mind. Well Sev points out that HE’S the one who’s made the land what it is, HE’S the one who made the horse business what it is. Cris wants to know if that’s why his parents are so distant, but Sev says that’s not it. Love and passion change over time. Cris brings up that they sleep in different rooms, but Sev says that’s between himself and Cande. Cris just wants answers, but Sev has explained the land issue and if Cris wants to imagine other things about his parent’s marriage based on that, that’s his own business.

Hum and Pru discuss renting the Santuario house again at breakfast. Pru has thought about it and if they had more money, the Mendoza’s wouldn’t feel like they could control everything the way they do just because they’re paying for the wedding. Hum says he’s going to take out a bank loan so that he’s princess can have the greatest wedding the town’s ever seen. Words to Pru’s ears…

Dominga pays Adelina a visit to give her condolences and ask if there will be a mass. She tells Adelina that Joaquin waited a long time, but eventually married. Adelina knows and is happy for him; he was nice, she just never fell for him. Besides, she was busy with Aldonza. Dominga says Lola’s a bit ticked/hurt that Aldonza hasn’t looked her old friend up. Adelina says Aldie’s just got a lot on her plate right now and she’ll find a minute to catch up with Lola.

Cut to Aldie going to Lola’s job. Lola’s face starts to light up before she remembers she’s pissed. Aldonza’s sorry and Lola’s not one to stay mad at her friend for more than 30 seconds, so they hug it out. Aldonza’s got a lot going on, she says, and maybe one day she’ll tell Lola everything.

Hum goes to the bank for the loan for $150,000(?). It’s a large amount, but they have great credit with the bank.

Aldonza and Lola are catching up because Lola’s the Genie to Aldonza’s Aladdin. She didn’t stay in touch because she didn’t want to know anything about anything having to do with Santa Lucia. She knows Cris and Vale are getting married, and brushes it off like it’s no big deal. She’s more concerned with whether or not Sev’s ok. Lola tells Aldie he’s fine, but she’s suspicious about why Aldonza wants to know.

I’m not sure I got this all, but it looks like Abelardo’s dad and Hum discuss putting something up to the bank to borrow against the loan and Hum says he’ll think about it and gather the necessary documentation in the meantime. He doesn’t need to remind Abe’s dad that this is confidential.

Cande’s ticked that Dominga went to give condolences about Roberta. Cande goes 0 to 60 when she hears Aldie’s back in town. She accuses Lola of telling Aldonza about the wedding, but Dominga says Cande should leave that poor girl alone and worry about her husband. She shows Cande Sev’s bloody shirt.

Mary and Vale are looking at Vale’s invitations or programs or something. Vale talks down about the wedding resources in pueblo, including Irma’s shop (because of Lola). She says Mary’s always defending the losers like Lola and Emmanuel, but they’re to be pitied, not trusted. Talk turns to Abelardo. Mary hopes he’s not invited to the wedding because he’s way too interested in it for her liking. Vale feigns ignorance as to why that might be and says they should go see her dad for her pre-wedding medical. She dumps the wedding stuff into Mary’s arms like Mary’s a flunkie and they head out.

PadrJ runs into Emmenuel and informs him of Roberta’s death. He’s clearly affected.

Aldonza apologizes to Hum for what happened. Hum tells her not to worry, he saw what happened and bad grass never dies, so Sev’ll be fine. He notes that she inherited her mother’s character and beauty. She thanks him and asks about renting the house. He says he can’t right now because his daughter might live there after the wedding. Aldie’s bummed for multiple reasons, but thanks him and leaves. (No good can come of this mutual respect and appreciation)

PadrJ confronts Sev about attacking Aldonza. Sev is worried for a hot sec, but clearly PadrJ doesn’t know about the rape. Sev says Aldie’s losing her marbles, and PadrJ looks like he wants to throw a punch, but he just warns Sev to stay away from Aldie. Cande walks in on the discussion and wants to know what’s going on. PadrJ tells her to ask her hubby.

Aldonza and Vale meet face to face outside of Hum’s office. Vale’s been taking lessons with the Ice Queen, but Aldie’s also taken Mean Girls 101 and will not be cowed by these fools. She meets Vale’s obvious attempts to make her jealous with hard edged sweetness, side stepping Vale’s question about why she was in Hum’s office and congratulating her on her upcoming wedding. When Vale says Cris will forget all about Aldonza soon, Aldie one ups her, saying she already forgot about him long ago and hadn’t thought about him til she saw him the other day. But in any case, Vale looks great, so nice seeing her again, congrats on the wedding, tah-tah! Vale is seething and takes off to raise hell somewhere else, cutting off Mary’s puppy like offer to come along.

Cande doesn’t like not being in on the story. PadrJ fills her in since Sev stays quiet: Sev and Aldie fought over something and Aldie confronted him with a letteropener. Sev claims he was warning Aldie away from Cris because he’s about to get married. Cande literally takes his side, going to stand behind him while he tells PadrJ that if Aldie plays the victim, Sev will take the matter to the cops.
Avances – Clearly The Green Eyed Monster had too much green beer and is a day late!: Vale slaps Cris because of Aldonza, Cris punches Abe because of Vale, and Vale and Cande apparently plan a trick for Aldonza.

Gracias, HellaShelle for another wonderful recap!

Anyone else finding it creepy that we keeps saying we want to know stuff and BOOM we get info. How are they going to keep this going if they keep spilling so many frijoles every episode!

"Unfortunately for Severiano, he’s still living in the past while Aldonza’s determined not to relive it." That's some poetry like there.

Yes, I was totally surprised at how much info Candy gave away in her little training session with Val. And then surprises just kept on coming.

Oh, Aldonza! With the running through the mysteriously empty streets in a panic. And that poor dress. Sorry, that was superficial of me.

"Sev starts swearing revenge, but Dr. Hum says he got what he deserved. Hum saw what was going down and if asked, he won’t cover for Sev, he’ll tell the truth." That was another big surprise. Not that Humberto would tell the truth, but that he would be up-front with Sev about his intentions.

"Vale ignores her, Cande controls everything and even Cris isn't on her side and...Hum’s already knocked out." Very cute moment.

"She gives the photo back to Cris and whaddaya know, PadrJ and Ray are in the picture." And yet I still can't be sure which one of them Candela had a thing for! She sort of made this dreamy face when he pointed out Padre J, but then she smiled when she said Raymundo's name, too.

Biggest shock, that they're giving us the "I'll get my land back" story so soon. I really wanted Cris to say what I was saying--that Sev's granddad lost the land fair and square and he might as well quit whining about it.

"Vale’s been taking lessons with the Ice Queen, but Aldie’s also taken Mean Girls 101 and will not be cowed by these fools." That was a beautiful scene...and a very apt description. I gloated. Even Mr. 5ft could appreciate it, without knowing what was being said.

"Cande literally takes his side, going to stand behind him while he tells PadrJ that if Aldie plays the victim, Sev will take the matter to the cops." Seriously, Candela?! You bought that stupid story?! I think Valeria needs a new teacher, if she's that gullible.

This was such an awesome recap, HellaShelle! Thank you, amiga.

Loved seeing the stabbing again. Your description of Aldonza's state of mind and the look of hysteria in her eyes as she told Adelina what happened was perfect.

Humberto is getting unpredictable. I hope he decides to pay for the wedding of the century with Aldonza's rent and not with a loan.

My other favorite scene after the stabbing was the meeting between the Ice Queen and the Mean Girls 101 alumna. Aldonza won that round, and looked great while doing it.

Kat- ITA. Sever's grandpa lost his land to Raymundo/Jero's grandpa fair and square. No one forced him to pay for his gambling debts with his family's land.

Vivi, I guess it's no less logical than any other motive for hate, but it's making me doubt Sev's state of mind. Not that a lot of his behavior hasn't already. I at least expected some allegations of cheating or other foul play, but no. He just can't let go of grandpa having told him "one day, all this will be yours." Build a bridge, and get over it, Sev. Or hang yourself from it, I'm good either way.

Gosh I'm feeling bloodthirsty!

Vivi, Humberto's unpredictability coupled with Pru's constant state of inebriation...this is going to be one hell of a wedding!

Thank you Hella Shelle fir this great recap,

The most important point was that Humberto stood up to Sever. Uh,oh, this can only mean problems in the enemy camp.

The letter opener looked awfully dull to me. I don't think Aldonza could have caused much serious damage to Sever.

I am looking forward to the wedding. I hope that it has all the sincerity that we doubt, and all the doubt that we enjoy.

David

HellaShelle, that was one heckuva great recap! Thanks!

Loved seeing the full wrath of Padre J. Not your usual TN man of the cloth. By the way, when Cande was looking at those photos, I swear one of them was of a woman with a man who looked like Raymundo.

I was having a quick flashback when Sev's gamblin' grandpa turned out to be none other than...dun-dun-DUN---Oh heck what was his name? The guy with the pickled liver who kept muttering "Maldita Gata". Anyway we only had to see him for a minute.

I felt really bad for poor Lola; her best friend leaves town unexpectedly and never even sends her an email? So sad.

Wow, you're right Diva; it's almost creepy how we ask for info and the writers put it into the script the next day. We are going to be awfully spoiled!

J in Oregon

"I am looking forward to the wedding. I hope that it has all the sincerity that we doubt, and all the doubt that we enjoy." Well said, David!

Thanks, J! I thought I recognized that voice, but seeing him upright, alive, sober, and with a lot more hair, kind of threw me.

Oh I think Candela has s thing for father J, she was super angry that Sev did not tell her about Aldonza stabbing him because father J questioned how strong their marriage could be if her husband didn't even bother to tell her he got stabbed. By the way, was the dress Aldonza was wearing the same on she had on the night Sev assaulted her?

I don't think it was the same dress, but similar --short, white, lace. Good catch!

One of the funniest moments this episode, Pru casually and happily playing with Humberto's chest hair after he told her his plans to pay for Val's wedding. It made me wonder how many takes the actors had to do, because I would be cracking up if I were either of them.

Thanks, Hellashelle , for that excellent, detailed recap.

I got a kick out of Candy hiding Sev's bloody shirt behind her back during that conversation with padre. AL must tell her tio about the rape.

DocHum seems to be turning over a new leaf. Is he feeling guilty and sorry for Al ?

By the way, if Candy and Him are cousins, does that make Valley Girl and Crispy second cousins or cousins once removed ? Is it common for cousins to marry in Mexico ?

Thanks for the support guys! I've been MIA the past week because work is CRAZY, but I'm glad I have crazier characters to keep things in perspective.

I'm more than a little weirded out by the way Cande's talking to Vale about the marriage. Doesn't she want her son to have a loving wife?

Color me...questioning. I didn't think Cande had a thing for Ray, but now I am really not sure. Is it him? Padre? Is Cris really Sev's? She did say they were friends long before she and Sev married, but that could mean a lot of things. Kudos to the whole team for not giving away the ending to this one ahead of time.

Also Kudos for the shades of gray here. Usually la mala sangre gets passed down, but in this instance, everyone's got their defects. It makes it more uncomfortable, but more nuanced that Sev's grandpa was a man of his word and Aldonza's grandpa wasn't all great. Puts the two on a more even footing.

You have such a talent for these recaps HelleShelle. This was amazing and you had some fun stuff to cover!

Wow, these episodes are just one surprise after another. I love we aren't languishing waiting forever for the reveals of secrets. I was kidding yesterday to say I want those flashbacks on Cande checking herself for the Padre, and BOOM we start getting it last night. I still think there are details to come, but boy we got more than usual this soon.

That conversation between Val and Cande was rather sad. Cande's jaded approach to love and marriage shows one hurt woman. But encouraging Val to become a control freak to HER SON was disturbing. So you're unhappy, but it's one thing to not like the daughter of a woman who might have taken an old boyfriend (guess we'll find out) but another to throw your son into an unhappy union and a life of misery. Some mother's love.

I am loving Padre. Boy he just went to the point with Seve. This man of the cloth is not to be messed with. Methinks there is history there with those two. Suddenly the adults are becoming kinda fun.

For the record, Emmanuel needed a hug last night. Volunteering!

Daisynjay

David - yea, Humberto said she didn't do any really damage, it'll just sting like a b**** for a while.

J in O - Yes! That was Aarón Hernán, the super controlling gramps we?I? last saw in DTQTQ. I had to look him up too.

Susanlynn - You're right they're at least second cousins (had to look that up too). Which I think is legal in most places, but I'm not sure. It doesn't seem to be a huge deal in TNs, but who knows how much of a real deal it is in real life.

Vivi- I thought the chest hair thing was cute too. Also a little weird to me, but in a cute way. I love little details like that that kind of cement the fictional relationships. Pru was really trying to be subtle but seemed so obvious but Hum really didn't seem to register that. I really like both of their characters. Even though Pru's a mean gossip, she's the only one who doesn't seem conniving.

Helluva recap HellaShelle! BAM! You rocked it, Girl! Diva noted many of my faves but I LOVE this subtle reflection of The Temptations and Supremes, "I'm Gonna Make You Love Me."

Vale heard all of that…but she’s gonna make Cris love her, yes she is, yes she is.

LOVE. IT!

The acting is just so stellar in this thing! I have to look at in the morning.

Auggie's back! Yaaaay! Yep, if Sev is telling the truth, his granpa lost and did the honorable thing: he paid up. Too bad, so sad! Suck it up Sev!

Emanuel is so sweet and earnest. Sounds like Cris is going to pay tomorrow for not having taken his advice.

LOVE Padre who's ready to mix it up with Sev in his own house if need be. YES! Love seeing what a strong protector Padre will be to Aldonza. Amen!

Love Aldonza's cool confidence as she confronted No Vale Nada! Oh yeah, she totally won that one. Whatever childish crap her and Cande plan cannot come close to what Sev did to her so I hope she is just as cool and calm, whatever goes down.

Diva, you're right. Today's episode was like an answer to yesterday's discussion! I have said Cande had a thing for Padre but the hatred Cande has for Roberta is more understandable if she was sweet on Ray and Roberta took him away and got her husband, too! Maybe Cande wanted BOTH brothers!

More to say later. Thank you HellaShelle!

I am leaning toward Candy having had a thing for Ray , and then along came Rob who took him away from her. Then, to add insult to injury, Rob has an affair with Candy's hubby. Yikes. That scenario would turn anyone into a bitter witch. Rob was that girl in high school who repeatedly went after every boyfriend you ever had.( Yes, Ruth, I am looking right at you . )Of course, I am usually wrong, so......

Wow, I guess Candy does not agree with those song lyrics ''Love and marriage, love and marriage, go together like a horse and carriage.'' With Sev and Candy, it's just the horse. What a sad view.

Wow, Lila, we had the same thought ! I am happy to not be alone with this theory.

Thanks Lila! I'm glad someone got the reference. Reading back through the recap, I was in a musical state of mind. Here are links if anyone missed one:

HellaShelle, an excellent, vividly descriptive recap.

"queen of the telenovela demon wives" and "Cande thinks that maybe her son isn’t capable of loving" were among my many favorites.

I see a small seed of resolve that has been nurtured and is growing in Aldonza. I admire her regal, outward confidence. If she is cowed or hurt to the core by Val, you would never know it. While her mother breathed fiery passion, Aldonza is a breath of strong, fresh, pure air.

"Cande thinks that maybe her son isn’t capable of loving". No Cande, that is your issue, not your son’s.

"PadrJ runs into Emmenuel and informs him of Roberta’s death. He’s clearly affected". Yes, the call of the blood?

Kat, I am also torn as to whom Cande was reminiscing about, the Padre or Raymundo. Perhaps both? I keep remembering her checking herself in the mirror before greeting the Padre the other day. Sara, perhaps it was he initially but after he decided on his vocation, she switched to Ray?

David, I also thought your "I hope that it has all the sincerity that we doubt, and all the doubt that we enjoy" was great.

Cande is creating a monster. What fun it will be when her creation turns on her with every trick that Cande has ingrained in Val's selfish, cruel little head.

Diana

I love that Val bears such a physical resemblance to onscreen moom Cynthia Klitbo (Prudencia).
Also, anyone keeping track of how many times Humberto of Cande have referred to Pru as being "imprudente"? It's up to at least five times.

J in Oregon

Oh for cripes sake! I meant onscreen MOM.

J in Oregon

HellaShelle you have created such a wonderful retelling of yesterday's episode and the comments are so quotable too, we're going to have a great day on the patio! I also got the "Love you like a love song." Masterful how you weaved those right in. I think many of us who grew up in such a rich musical environment are reminded of songs when we retell these stories. It also feels like an ongoing tribute to our dear Madelaine!

Susanlynn-- I guess Candy does not agree with those song lyrics ''Love and marriage, love and marriage, go together like a horse and carriage.'' With Sev and Candy, it's just the horse. What a sad view. Love that but I think she just ended up with the horses's a$$!

Diana--I admire her regal, outward confidence. If she is cowed or hurt to the core by Val, you would never know it. While her mother breathed fiery passion, Aldonza is a breath of strong, fresh, pure air.

Loved your observation too, David!

Y'all know what? Maybe Cande wishes she could have been the free-spirited, passionate, sex positive gal Roberta was and envied her even before Roberta (theoretically) took both men she was in love with. Maybe losing Sev was strike three: She lost Jeronimo to the Church and Ray and Sev to Roberta. Thus the bitter, tightly braided, manipulative shrew inappropriately nicknamed "Candy."

Lila

Thanks for the recap HellaShelle. Candela has some really screwed tips and ideas about marriage. She is practically creating a mini-devil just waiting to overtake her. One goal for Aldie and nil for Val in that confrontation. Love that the drama is moving at a fast pace, hope it keeps it up

Great HellaShelle.

"(No good can come of this mutual respect and appreciation)"

I thought for sure, Humberto would rent the place (still may) but they threw me a curve and he got a loan.

I'm wondering if Severiano's recounting of history untrue.

Cande - honey, there are two ways to keep a husband, rich daddy and a pre nup or snip, snip

PG - mess with her again and I'll pull that arm off and beat you to death with it

Humberto - dang woman, tell somebody that gives a shit

Severiano - look at all this, am I a guy that needs to force myself on a young, beautiful, educated, woman, pleeeeease

Cris - what's in the closet and under the bed

Pru - I think when I talk

Aldonza - oh Val, and your ass is getting fat

Emmanuel - you get what you see

Mary - throw the stick again and I'll go fetch it

You did it again, Tofie! Like PG's and Aldonza's especially!

;D Lisa

tofie you absolutely made my day with your list. Your mind works in weird and wonderful ways and I LOVE IT!!

Especially loving your Padre comment. I can't get that image out of my head now...like something out of Monty Python.

Lila, I rather like your observation on Cande. There's a fine line between jealousy and envy. Our tight braided upstanding woman may have been a bit of a outgoing, free spirited young girl, more like Aldonza than what we see now. But you're right, she lost what she wished and hoped she would have to Roberta. No way in you know where she would let her son also be taken by anyone remotely associated with that woman. Frankly, only reason I can see her so willing to marry her son off o his cousin and someone who she actually seemed to disdain there for a bit.

Daisy, it was just so sad how, after she decided what to do about Sev's infedelity when Cris was a baby, she swore to him in his crib that from now on it was him and her against the world. She's trying to keep him in her twisted, dark little world and wants him with someone through whom she can continue to control him as if he were still a helpless little boy.

Sad for her but Cris's freedom is with the daughter of the woman she came to hate so much.

Wouldn't you have loved to see Roberta before she got so sickly "in love" with Sev and before she sank into alcoholism and despair?

Yesterday when Aldonza was running desperately through the streets in a bloodied dress and talking to herself to calm down she was chanelling the way portrayed Roberta PERFECTLY! Gret scene!

Thank you for the recap, HellaShelle. You’re writing like a recapping pro. :-)
I can’t wait to watch my recording today!

”. . . love her like a love song baby,”
LOL!!! I love both song references. Madelaine might be working through you, ya know. Just sayin’ . (I miss her QEPD) Keep ‘em coming. :-)

Cande’s braids are so tight it is affecting her thinking.

$150k for a wedding? Really? In the middle of nowhere?

Vale feigns ignorance as to why that might be and says they should go see her dad for her pre-wedding medical.
Seriously? Have her dad check out her lady bits? And discover she’s not pure as the driven snow?

DocHum seems to be turning over a new leaf. Is he feeling guilty and sorry for Al ?
I think the man has a strong sense of justice and is tired of seeing the Alcocers get screwed, figuratively, because he doesn’t know about the literal one done to Aldonza.

I wondered, too, if Cande had it bad for both brothers.

I think Renato is the best catch so far: sincere, quite the hottie, a nice though unfaithful dad, not mixed up in the local drama, etc.

HellaShelle---I loved reading your recap today. Aldonza had taken the mean girls class 101 and so she knew how to take on Val
That was fabulous.

Tofie---your Mary line was hilarious.

Too bad Aldonza only got in one thrust with the letter opener, I was hoping that she would give Sev a twofer.

David---You're looking forward to
the wedding? I'm not. I cringe thinking about it and the possibility of Val getting pregnant.

Can't wait for the beat down of Lardo tonight. I'm glad that it's Cris doing the beating and not Emanuel. I don't want Emanuel getting fired. If there is/was a confrontation between those two, Lardo would lie about it and Emanuel would probably end up paying the price.

Must see tv tonight. What evil trap is being laid for Aldonza?
the gringo

Yep, suddenly that decision not to give Cris the specifics seems like it's going to pay off. He can deck Abelardo for doing it and not Emmanuel for telling him about it.

Just now finished watching my recording of this episode.

In the final scene, I loved how Cande hid Sev's bloody shirt behind her back when PadreJ was talking to Sev about Aldonza. Cande put 2+2 together very quickly.

OT- new telenovela

I'm not quite sure where to post this, but I was hoping to catch at least Gringo's eyes...

Anyways, it's been confirmed that Maite Perroni will star in a remake of 'Simplemente Maria'.

This production will air down here after 'Amores del barrio', which itself will air after 'Muchacha italiana viene y casarse' (the 4:15 time slot).

BTW, the loan that the doctor wanted was for half a million pesos!

Stevey---I sure wouldn't want to miss that but 4:15? A terrible timeslot. Is it Univision?
the gringo

Hm, at today's exchange rate, that's $66K. For some reason, I thought he was asking for a million and a half, which would be more like $99K.

Either way, that's a LOT of money to spend on a wedding that's taking place in a town that doesn't seem to have a very high cost of living. I guess they're not going to be getting a lot of things locally? She already said they'll buy her dress in Houston. I suppose if you factor in shipping, travel expenses, etc., they could reasonably expect to spend that much.

True about dress shopping in Houston, 5-ft. And they might invite the entire town, since they own it anyway, like they did Cristobal's baptism.

Approx. ten years ago, hubby and I attended a wedding that was a learning experience for us. Bride and her family live in a small town in another state. Bride's family told us the custom is to not send out wedding invites, but to print it in the newspaper for the entire town to know they are invited. (ack!!!) Apparently that was the custom and How Things Are Done there. OMG.... they had the wedding in a humongous church and the reception at a state park lodge. Locals showed up in blue jeans for their free dinner. Maybe Santa Lucia is like this, too?

Can you imagine the locals showing up in their finest denim and plaid? Candela would throw a fit! Who the heck were all those people who went to the baptism, anyway? I know that even Raymundo's workers were supposed to be there, but I kinda figured they were at the "peon party" out back somewhere, having cookout food and drinking beers instead of champagne.

Just curious: how do Mr LN, Mr 5-ft and our other "significant other" viewers rate this show so far?

J in Oregon
(Mr Fuzzy, Balthazar and Honey don't have an opinion one way or the other)

I haven't told Mr. Lila much about this one but the little that I have he is not dismissive. I think he's glad not to hear me yelling "stupid" and "idiots" and "this is the stupidest sh*t I ever saw in my life.", etc. He does recognize some words and used to chuckle with me every time (in the last show) he heard "maldita gata!" He hasn't picked up any phrases from La Sombra yet!

Cool question!

TSS (the stuffed shirt) Mr. Tofie began giving me a wide berth during the last one, one time playfully handing me a tissue, to wipe the froth from my mouth. He heard me yell, stick him again the other night, and stepped in with a questioning eyebrow. So at commercial I tried to download what's happening and all he said was somebody outta cut Severiano's peepee off. Not his words.

Mr. 5ft says he can tell, even without knowing exactly what's going on, that this is the best one that I've watched in a long time. Per him, the last "good" one was Sortilegio. Which was a good one, indeed, but I also thought that Amor Bravio had some good things going for it. He's basing that partly on what he's seen and partly on how excited I am to see every new episode. And probably that I'm not pausing every five minutes to have a long rant about how incredibly stupid it is.

Mr LN says this is the best we've seen. He thinks Chris is Pablo 2.0. He doesn't understand why Adelina and/or Aldonza don't tell Padre G that Severed raped Aldonza. Oops, gotta go watch !

After seeing how angry Padre J was already, if he finds out what Sev did...can he get fired for beating a parishoner?

I don't think Aldonza wants ANYONE to know what Sever did to her. Had Adelina not found her right after it happened, she probably would have never told her either. And it's not Adelina's place to tell Jero without Aldonza's permission. Kat- You are right on that the first thing Jero would do when/if he finds out is rip off the priest collar and go beat the crap out of Sever...which would make everyone asks all kinds of questions and Aldonza's private business would be out there for everyone. Which again, she doesn't want.
