La Sombra del Pasado #42 - Wed 4/15 - Warnings all around
Tomas and Abelardo discuss Pru. Tomas does think Pru is a hottie (well, at least he has good taste), but he's also building up his gigolo clientele. He counsels Lardo that providing *ahem* mechanical services to women with money is always going to be more profitable than working.
Aldonza and Renato catch up by phone. He's doing a little better, but his dad is just a wreck. Aldonza tells him they had to move in early because Sev was trying to have a front-woman rent the house out from under her, but Humberto warned her. Renato doesn't think it's a good idea to trust Hum completely, even though he did do the right thing this once. Renato says now that she's moved in, there's no legal way to get her out of the house. Soon they'll be ready to make their next move, but Aldonza tells him there's no rush. Ren tells her life goes on and she'd better get ready and not let them do anything to scare her off. He really misses her. "I also got used to having you around." Before they can discuss it further, she hears Adelina coming in and ends the call. Renato looks tired. And teary.
Adelina tells Aldonza about her encounter with Sev and his threat to hurt Aldonza again if they don't leave. Aldonza thinks this is a sign that Sev is running scared. "He's not scared of anything!" Aldonza says he's scared of having his reputation ruined and of Cristobal finding out what a piece of shit he has for a father. Adelina thinks there's no point saying anything, because the law is going to be on his side, it's been too long, and everyone is going to believe him. Aldonza says she has other info, too--he's having an affair. Image is everything to the Mendozas, and he knows that Aldonza is privy to a lot of dark secrets. If he's threatening, it's because he's scared, and she's going to keep reminding Adelina of that as many times as she has to. This time, he won't "amedrantar" (intimidate). Adelina scoffs that Adelina knows what she's doing. "So, now can you tell me what the doctor said?" Adelina repeats what she told Renato. And Adelina repeats what Renato said about being careful. Adelina won't be able to sleep, thinking about what Sev might do. Aldonza tells her they have a watchman now, who came recommended by Melesio.
Dominga comes to ask Cande what she wants for dinner. Cande scolds her for not resting and then tells her to make whatever she wants to. Dominga suggests what sounds to me like "pambacitos" which could be referring to "pambazos" which are a kind of sandwich named for the roll they're served on…it's street food, so that's a little surprising, but then Cande has never seemed particularly snooty about food. Dominga asks about "Simoneta," but as far as Cande knows, she and Sev are still negotiating the price on some horses. Dominga plays off her curiosity and says she's just making conversation, that lately Cande's been something unintelligible about being in a foul mood "geniuda" (as in having "mal genio"). Cande says it's because she's waiting for God to perform a miracle and get Aldonza Alcocer out of her son's life. *drink*
Aldonza introduces Adelina to Don Camilo, their new security guard. He assures them nobody is going to shoot the place up again. He promised it to Melesio, who is like his brother. Just give him a shout if they need anything. Lola shows up and she and Aldonza head inside. Adelina tells Don C she's glad to have him around. Lots of people don't like them in this town. But, he reminds her, some people do value them, like Don Melesio.
Lola asks Aldonza if she was right to ask for the candy house back. Aldonza is of the opinion that a gift is a gift and you don't ask for it back. She laughs at Lola for saying it was really an excuse to see Emmanuel. "Why not give him another chance, then?!" Lola won't since now he's trying to tell her the candy house up and walked away. He's hiding something and she doesn't know what it is! Aldonza wonders if maybe Em ate the house already and is too embarrassed to tell her. Nah, Lola thinks he gave it to Mari. If he did, she'll NEVER forgive him.
Em visits Valeria to ask her about the candy house. He gets an eyeful of her moisturizing her legs. She asks him to sit and chat. Riiiiight, because they've always been so close. Don't shut the door! Dumbass. She suggests they just chat about themselves. She remembers him taking responsibility for a broken pitcher when they were kids. He remembers he got grounded for three weeks. Val says he's always been very loyal to his friends…like Aldonza. "You must know all of her secrets." Em says he knows nothing. Valeria starts fondling his face and telling him she could reward him for any information.... Emmanuel extricates himself FAR more easily than Cris did (just saying) and tells her that even if he did know something, he wouldn't betray her confidence. Val kicks him out and warns him that if he says anything "no te la vas a acabar conmigo!" (you won't get away with it; you won't ever be done with me and not in a good way).
Aldonza tells Lola, before she leaves, not to keep making up stories in her head. Go home and relax already. Lola is glad to have Aldonza home so they can chat all the time. Aldonza tells Lola to give Emmanuel some time and run home already. Yikes, I'm a little worried about her walking home alone.
Humberto is carefully crafting a most excellent sammich when Emmanuel comes into the dining area. Em tells him that Pru was locked in her room all day. Humberto tells him that's every day for Pru. He asks about the candy house and why it's a big deal. Em explains that Lola wants him to return it and if he doesn't, he's a dead man. But he sooooo misses her! He misses her company, her kisses. He closes his eyes and thinks of her. Humberto says he's in love and they'll have to tear up the house and find…uh…the house.
Melesio finds Lola sitting out by the water feature crying again. She doesn't know how to get Emmanuel out of her heart. Melesio says people who give themselves over to love get hurt the most. But that means she has a good soul. And it's going to take a long time to forget him. And her pain will make her stronger and wiser for the next time. Lola says she doesn't know what her life would be like with out him and Dominga, her real parents. Dun, dun, dun. Lola kisses and hugs Mel while he looks worried.
Humberto encourages Emmanuel to find some way to talk to Lola and tell her what he feels. Em finally comes up with the idea that Aldonza can help him. Have sammich, will travel. Right to Aldonza's door, right now, because tomorrow he has too much work to do.
Cristobal has also headed over to see Aldonza. Adelina doesn't want to let him in, for obvious reasons. She tells him the relationship started badly and it's not going anywhere. He wonders QTH it is that happened between Roberta and his parents. He finally gives up…but just for tonight. He won't really give up until he and Aldonza are together. Adelina shuts the door and runs up to Aldonza's room, where Aldonza is…not.
Sev is reviewing paperwork and having a nice relaxing glass of wine at the end of a day of nefarious deeds. Candela stalks in, wondering where Cristobal is and hoping he's not out looking for Aldonza Alcocer. *drink* But no, he's not, and we know it several seconds before the lady in question announces her presence. "As you can see, Cristobal isn't with me." Aldonza mocks their lousy security. "I've just shown you that I can also come over whenever I want to." Sev warns her to be careful. "How ironic. To be careful I'd have to stay in your house for my own safety. I don't think you'd dare show your true colors in front of your wife…or am I wrong?" Sev lunges at her and she laughs. "You want to know what I'm trying to show? That I'm not afraid of you. I can come into your territory whenever I want, like you do to mine. And also to show you that I have weapons to rip you to pieces whenever it suits me." Cande tells her to go if she's through with her threats. But Aldonza's not done. "I want you and your husband to know that I'm not going to leave Santa Lucia and no one will ever get me out of my house again. That decision rests solely with me, so stop bothering my family. Got it? That's all now." Before she can leave, she runs into Cristobal. All she'll say is she was attending to an important matter, but she's done now. He asks his parents what happened and since they won't answer, he goes running after Aldonza. Candela shoots Sev a dirty look.
Aldonza finally stops and turns around to tell Cris that his parents are trying to get her to leave town, so she told them that she's not leaving, no matter what they do. Cris doesn't understand what is going on…did something happen that he doesn't know about? Aldonza says she's reached her limit. She's tired of his parents circling around her house and tired of their threats. He says his dad swore it wasn't him who shot up the house. "Oh, please! You think they're going to tell you? You're his son! And that's the least of it." Cris wants to know the rest so he can do something. "I don't want you to do anything! What needed to be done, I already did. I talked to your dad face to face." She begs him to recognize that all her problems are due to him. He begs her not to tell him, like everyone else is, that he's ruining her life, because he's trying to do the opposite. He loves her with all his heart and he knows she's feeling the same. Aldonza doesn't let him kiss her this time. "I can't feel the same. You're the son of the man I hate most in the world."
Candela wants to know what Aldonza was talking about, but Sev says he doesn't know. Candela is now starting to be suspicious about all the things Sev hasn't wanted to tell her. Sev says she got what she wanted--making Candela doubt him. "I've always doubted you." Cris comes back inside and says Aldonza didn't tell him anything and he's going up to bed. Yes, Candela, shriek after him, that will help. Candela says she HAS to know what Aldonza said to Cris. Sev says he's more interested in how she got into the house.
Aldonza comes home to find Emmanuel and Don Camilo outside sharing a laugh. Don Camilo wasn't sure if he should let Emmanuel in. Em thanks him for doing his job. Don Camilo goes inside and Em tells Aldonza that he needs help with Lola. He wants to patch things up…"Well, start by giving back the candy house." Emmanuel explains that it got stolen. No, really. For real. He doesn't want to tell Lola or she'll hate him. Em thinks he knows who took it, but he's going to have to steal it back.
Lola goes to Mari's to ask if Em gave her the house. She tells the truth, adding that she hasn't seen him lately, though she won't swear to it. Lola angrily declares that they're not enemies and she doesn't even have any hard feelings. Mari snottily agrees they're good friends and when Emmanuel comes looking for her, she'll fight with him. "Whatever. You can have him. The two-face." *sigh*
Dominga is worried about telling Lola the truth about her mother. Melesio dries dishes and says they should just avoid the topic. They need to think about what to tell her and ask God to illuminate them and show them the right thing to do. Uh…'cause having a priest tell you that honesty is the best policy wasn't enough godly illumination? He asks about Dominga's visit to Flavia and Candela listens in as Dominga says Flavia is convinced that Joaquin and Adelina have a thing going on. "But Adelina is a pan de dios!" ("bread of God" literally; i.e., she's good people). Dominga busts Cande listening in, so Cande enters the kitchen and asks if Lola let Aldonza into the house. Not as far as Dominga knows--Lola isn't even home yet. Candela thanks them for the info and leaves, but shakes her head as if she doesn't believe a word. Dominga tells Mel it sounds like something went down and Candela is looking for someone to blame.
Emmanuel and Joaquin hang out at the cantina. Em is surprised to see him there. Joaquin says his problem is named "Flavia" and ain't nothing to be done about it. They toast to that with shots of tequila as Em giggles. Joaquin says she keeps being jealous of Adelina and it's making him sick. Emmanuel, with all the wisdom of youth, says chicks are like that…they just wake up with twisted ideas and nobody can talk them out of them. Emmanuel suggests they get really drunk "hasta las chanclas" (down to their sandals) but Joaquin scoffs. No, they're going to take it easy. Because this ain't the kind of show where bros get drunk to solve their problems. Yay!
Up in Cande's suite, Sev comes in…sure, yeah, uh, dinner, that's what he came to talk about…no, not Dominga's dinner…uh, he came to ask Cande out to dinner. Like, outside the house. I swear, Cande and I just gave him the exact same look. "Do you wanna? We've been too tense lately and we need a little distraction. Conversation. About our problems. Without arguing and fighting. We won't get anywhere that way. We haven't gotten anywhere. I know I've made mistakes--I don't deny that. We both care about Cristobal, our son. Please, let's call a truce. For tonight." Cande agrees and asks for a moment to get ready. Sev is relieved and says he'll wait for her downstairs. Well…that was…odd….
Aldonza came home, but Adelina didn't know. She tells Adelina she went to Las Animas to talk to "los dueños" (the owners). They get into a shouting match. Adelina wonders if Aldonza is trying to get herself hurt again…or killed! Adelina says she'll kill him first before he dares touch her again. She knows how to defend herself and he might as well know it. Adelina says she's naïve. Sev's an animal and he's going to attack her if he feels threatened--and Aldonza is cornering him. She needs to come down to earth and realize that Sev isn't going to take any mercy on her and he'll be the death of her like he was to her mother.
Mopey Cristobal is mopey. He thinks of Aldonza saying he's the son of the man she hates most in the world. Speaking of the devil, Sev comes by for a chat. Not about Aldonza. He wants a truce. It's not ok for people who love each other to fight like this. He wants to encourage Cris to do what he can so they can be ok. But now he's going out to dinner with Cande. And tomorrow he wants them to talk about giving Cris a proper salary, even though Cris doesn't think it's necessary.
Val tells Lardo not to worry about what Cande heard. She's got an idea and she wants to meet in their "usual spot" to discuss it. Aw, geez, we're not going to have to watch automotive acrobatics again, are we? As she's ending the call, Pru walks in, so she pretends to be talking to Mari. Pru just came in to say goodnight…and share her idea for getting Cris back. Date Abelardo and make him jealous! She leaves Val to think about it.
Sev tells Candela, over wine, that he talked to Cris and offered him a salary. She thinks that sounds fair. Sev said it will serve as a reminder that without them, he's nothing. Cris is turning it down for now, but Sev will get him to agree. He wants to be Cande's ally and stop having separate nefarious plans. He wants them to do couples plotting from now on. Candela isn't sure she believes in his new attitude. Sev says he wants to listen and support her and know what's going on in her head. "OK. I have ideas." She tells him about Flavia's jealousy of Adelina. Sev says Adelina couldn't steal the husband from a cow. They laugh. I want to kick 'em both right in the shins. Nobody respects Adelina! Cande thinks they can feed the gossip and the town will pressure Aldonza and Adelina to leave. Sev takes Cande's hand and she asks if he's trying to seduce her. As Simoneta watches in the background, having just arrived at the restaurant, Sev says Cande can't blame him--she's the most beautiful woman in town. Well, sure, now that Roberta's dead--just saying. Sev says he's doing everything to get her back.
Pru fantasizes about Tomas coming into her bedroom to, uh, warm her up. She tells him to go away and not make her sin…as Humberto watches her flailing her arms around in the air. When she wakes up and realizes he was watching, she goes to take another bath, saying there's been a lot of "bochorno" today (it was scorching). She doesn't appreciate Hum asking if it might be menopause.
Sev and Candela come home and we finally get a glimpse of what Candela was really wearing to dinner. Her short red dress was nearly Roberta-worthy, except for the skirt not being flirty. Good thing, too, 'cause that dress is really short. The amount of leg she's showing as she sits on the couch is…well, I feel indecent noticing. Sev invites her to have another glass of wine with him…in the dining room…in the dark. (Where he can imagine she's some other woman in a red dress? Just saying!) Candela pours the wine and they toast…but does she succumb to Sev's dastardly charms? Tune in tomorrow to find out!

Two points:
A) That Candy House needs an agent and a spot in the opening credits
B) That scene with Sev and Cande in the restaurant and later...it was like watching two rattlesnakes doing a mating ritual. Real creepy but I couldn't look away! And, I'm surprised they didn't seal their new-found alliance by linking pinky-fingers. Something is in the wind--will she, won't she? I knew when Cande pulled the cork out of Sev's wine bottle for him that dark things were afoot...

"But Adelina is a pan de dios!" ("bread of God" literally; i.e., she's good people)
"Humberto is carefully crafting a most excellent sammich"
That clever Severiano, kill two birds, seducing his wife to assure her complicity and to preempt any disclosure of Aldonza arising from her threat. Dude needed eyes in the back of his head though, Simoneta ain't pleased.
Simoneta - "Blame It On Your Heart" Patty Loveless https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eopNLWRW0IM
Cris - pushing a rock up a hill
Cande - was beginning to think my chances getting laid were better with the priest
Aldonza - I burrowed a tunnel into Cris bedroom! No, dumbass the door was open
Severiano - I'll take one for the team
Val - hahaha, and remember that time I made you buy tampax at 7-11 in front of my friends
Joaquin - women, can't live with em and can't live without em
The Candy House - call 911, call 911
Some lines I liked:
"they'll have to tear up the house and find…uh…the house."
"Because this ain't the kind of show where bros get drunk to solve their problems. Yay!"
"He wants to be Cande's ally and stop having separate nefarious plans. He wants them to do couples plotting from now on."
The thought of Sev and Cande actually plotting TOGETHER sends chills up my spine.
And dammit, I was doing something else and missed the dress. Let me go watch that last scene now. Screw getting ready for work.
I don't know where loose sexual friendliness stops and prostitution begins, but it seems that Val is teetering on the edge of that fence. I hated how she tried to play Em when she was oiling her legs, and when he was unable/couldn't give her what she wanted she flicked him off like a piece of dandruff on her shoulder.
I don't understand why they call the chocolate house a "caja de caramelos," which I take to mean "a box of caramels." Why don't they call it a "casita de chocolate" or something like that?
Loved Sev and Cande's date night. If he does succeed in getting her into bed, I suppose it will turn out to be the most expensive sexual encounter of his life.

"He gets an eyeful of her moisturizing her legs. She asks him to sit and chat. Riiiiight, because they've always been so close. Don't shut the door! Dumbass” and "Humberto says he's in love and they'll have to tear up the house and find…uh…the house" were among my many favorites.
I admire Aldonza more each passing day. I love her fiery courage. She confronted both devils and dis so calmly while managing to get her message that she will not be subjct to further intimidation across quite masterfully.
I am sick though that Adelina is going to be targeted. She has been the most faithful and loyal sister and niece and I shudder to think of the damage Sev and Cande's plan will to her.
"He's doing a little better, but his dad is just a wreck". Umm, really Renato? I saw no emotion from him whatsoever. Perhaps if we’d been privy to seeing a sad scowl or even one tear, I’d be a little more sympathetic. I hope Renato comes back soon...
J, no need to try and sum up my feelings on the ritual courtship debacle, you did it so well - two rattlesnakes. ITA beyond creepy but admittedly mesmerizing.
Just when we think Sev is down, he is not out. tofie, yes, "seducing his wife to assure her complicity and to preempt any disclosure of Aldonza arising from her threat summed it up perfectly.
Sara, I didn't notice the dress either. In my defense, I think I was so immersed (and sickened) by what was going on, the details evaded me.
David, loved your description of Val "flicking off Em".
Kat, marvelous.
Diana
J in O- the house does need a spot in the credits!
And I did watch the scene. That was a short red dress! Those two rattlesnakes (excellent comparison, J) are indeed hypnotic.
Sometimes a catch details and sometimes not. The dress was so quick. I must have been texting offspring. (She's coming to visit next week and we are going to watch her defend her Master's thesis. Then it's back to LA because she has class for her second Master's. Yeah. I'm being a proud mom.)
I will watch this episode sometime today and now know to watch for Cande's short red dress. Is she channeling her inner Roberta?
I can envision Lardo & Tomas’ business cards --- Gigolos ‘R’ Us. Those idiots have overvalued their capital.
Yeah, caramelos in this case means sweets, and the outside is decorated with other sweets like jelly beans.
Side-bar worthy.
Remarkable achievements! I am happy for you and your family.
Beam away with motherly pride. You deserve it.
Diana
Sara: ..."Screw getting ready for work." Getting your priorities in order!
AND: I join Diana in congratulating you on the accomplishments of your daughter. Just wonderful to see our offspring succeed.
David
Great recap, Diva!
Thanks for the sammich info. In my mind, I'm imagining some serious fillers, juicy and delicioso...now I'm hungry.
I really don't like when people take advantage of Em. And Val couldn't have been more obvious. SO glad he's over her! I wish he had said to her face that Cris dodged a bullet.
Diva excellent drinking game you've got going! Don't invite Em though. That boy needs to stick with...whatever he can hold onto cuz sweets don't seem to work for him either.
You guys, I'm getting really pissed at Aldonza. She's a fiery, intelligent protagonista, but she's also kind of selfish. Adelina was alone at night, by herself with heavy loads of stuff WITH ALDONZA'A RAPIST. This man, to quote Aldie herself, ruined her life! Whatever self-defense she's taken or considered or whatever, she needs to expand to include Adelina. That nightwatchman, whom she hired without even mentioning it to Adelina, can't be a bodyguard to both of them at the same time. And Adelina's given everything up for Aldonza, while Aldonza can't be bothered to tell her she's leaving the house (even if she doesn't say why)? She might be willing to risk Sev's wrath, but she's not even considering the other obvious casualities.
(El Santu must not be too far from town?)
" I agree Cande was trying to look sexy, but the effect is lost with her severe hairdo."
Funny you mention that, David. All morning, I have been wondering if Sev & Cande do the deed, whether she would hang her head over the side of the bed so her braids don't get messed up.
Or maybe she has so much gel on that hair, it is more like Helmet Hair.
David--from what I could see, the candy house was constructed entirely of hard candies. (You know, the kind you find under your couch cushions on moving day.)
J in Oregon
"I felt like it was a message to both of them, although more so for Sever."
And you know neither of them will heed the message.
hellshelle said:
"You guys, I'm getting really pissed at Aldonza."
She doesn't seem to be very cautious, does she? She's very impulsive.
The avances really do give too much away.
Thanks for the well-wishes everyone. We are threatening to attend this dignified event wearing T-shirts with her baby picture on them and waving pom-poms.
And Sara...I can sense those buttons bursting from here. A toast to your daughter from the patio.
One scene I don't want to see is Val and Em. I read that and thought...Oh no she didn't. Cripes, why doesn't she just go stand on a street corner and hold a sign saying "sperm donor needed." And Pru, gees honey, another one who thinks Lardo is a catch that would make anyone jealous. Some of these women do need some loving bad when he starts looking good.
Sev is amazing. As he sees the potential of an unravel and his wife raising that eyebrow, he swoops in for the kill. The sheer fact that after all this time, she is falling for this, oh my. Glad I can see the possible results tonight.
So Allie tells Cris that Sev is the man she hates most in the world. At some point do you now: A.) Stand up straight, march into your father, and lay it on the line...why does she feel that way and if his father doesn't confess, he's leaving for good and breaking off with his parents forever. Tired of the lies" B.) Stand up straight, go to Allie and state "Why? I want the truth, I won't pursue you anymore if that's what you want, but I deserve to know as well if I'm being lied to and my life ruined."
Just sayin'
I can see perhaps Ren's dad "being a wreck" after the fact. I did that when I lost my dad. I was his POA on everything,my siblings not wanting to deal with decisions needed, and when he passed I kept handling all the arrangements, etc. My sons were wrecks as my dad lived with us and they missed him terribly ( eleven at the time). I never really cried through any of the events. Maybe two weeks later, I was paying bills and opened one where I had bought something for my dad listed and just fell apart.
Doctors are trained to hold in emotions when dealing with patients, maybe a knee jerk reaction of the same losing her .Like to think the man realized what he lost and maybe how he had cheated on her too.
Daisynjay
David - I feel you on the terminology. It must be a generic term for candy treat made up of many candies, but I still call a gingerbread house a gingerbread house, even if it's got jelly bean shingles and a candy cane fence, so I'm also perplexed by the wording.
Can't wait to get home and see the second half of this episode for myself! Cande as the lady in red?! Must see tv!
Daisynjay, I'm so glad you said that about Cris. Aldonza tells him that she despises his dad, and he doesn't think there has to be something to that hatred that his dad actually did? Even if he doesn't know what it is, he's got to figure it can't be good.
Vivi- I hadn't thought about it, but yes! She's been sexually and physically assaulted by his mom, dad, cousin-in-law/godmother, cousin/ex-gf and her brother was sort of assualted by his cousin/godfather.
But this is just reinforcing my desire to see some romance from the two of them. What is justifying this love? What would they have to share to justify him cutting all ties with the Sevil and his handmaiden? Because right now, all they've got is a couple of red-hot kisses and smoldering encouters of banter. (PS: Can we sell chapstick at the Naughty Melon? Has someone already suggested that? First flavors: Melon (obviously), chocolate, (cinnamon) spice. And maybe bitter coffee, for Cande.
Gracias, tofie! Excellent list, as usual, and the Val line...I so bet she did! And promised him a kiss for it, too.
Gracias, Sara! I was trying to come up with a "The family that ___ together, ___ together" for Sev and Cande, but all I could come up with was "The family that plots together, rots together" which isn't overly witty just...hopefully accurate. Oh, yes, screw work--you need to see the dress! Congratulations to your daughter--two masters degrees, wow! You work it, proud mama! I vote you wear the embarrassing t-shirts.
Gracias, Diana! I guess I was picturing Renato's dad up in his room, catatonic, hugging his wife's pillow and refusing to let anyone change the sheets. Maybe that's giving him too much credit, I dunno. I'm with you and tired of Adelina getting hurt. Cande's right about how much the town will let her have it over meaningless gossip, but Aldonza's not going to agree to leave over that--it's just going to make her more angry and determined.
Gracias, Doris! I keep picturing Roberta as a little red-dressed devil, perching on people's shoulders and whispering things in their ears..."No, wear the red dress...the red dress...the red dress...."
Gracias, HellaShelle! Em is just determined to get sloshed...I'm glad Joaquin shut that down right quick! There are a lot of people walking around town at night and plenty of lighting, but somehow Sev shows up and there's no one around and the street is dark. Ugh! And I know Adelina's not wearing track shoes. How the hell far is El Santuario?! Padre J has a car--did he not offer to drive her? And then Lola and Aldonza both were walking between ES and LA in the dark, where I'm sure there *aren't* any lights or helpful, friendly passers-by in case one were to be accosted by Satan on horseback. Safety, people!
Gracias, Daisynjay! Sorry about your business call, but I'm glad you get to catch up at lunch. Cris is asking too few questions, the wrong questions, asking the wrong people, ignoring his gut...and then he makes that "I'm having a troubling thought" face and I think he's FINALLY going to have the big breakthrough and the light bulb will fully turn on...and somebody distracts him and the light goes back out again.
Gracias, cathyx! It wasn't very kind of me, but I just couldn't help myself...I've seen the way Sev gets when he remembers Roberta. And if Cande had seen it, she'd also be calling BS on all his empty flattery.
I can get behind this. Sometimes hopeful accuracy is more important than wit!
hellashelle-We think alike! It actually crossed my mind that life was imitating art! Things are fine with the family. We aren't feuding with anyone and there are no melon crops to destroy.
Daisynjay-So you missed an episode for nothing? How frustrating! You've made excellent points about Cris. Time to get to the bottom of things!
Tomas and Lardo in Tomas's bedroom giggling over girls..pathetic losers. What are they..14 ?
I think that at this point, AL has crossed the line from bravery to foolish. Poking that hornet's nest is not a good idea, and there is just one old dude guarding her house. SHe seems to ignore the fact that she is also putting her tia in danger. Yeah, Severed , you are a big man threatening and pushing around women. I am hoping that there is a special place in hell for guys who do that. Chris the Clueless needs some analytical skills. What could his dad have done to AL to make her hate him so much ?
Sara, congratulations ! What an accomplishment. You should be proud. What is the masters in ? My son-in-law is finishing up his masters right now, too. This one is in theology, and the first was an MBA. Now, he is job hunting with this unusual combination.
I would think a couple of 14 year olds are more mature than Tomas and Lardo, but I might be biased.
Chris is supposed to have analytical skills...he's supposed to have a business degree! I guess his family is one hell of a big blind spot for him.
Kat-WORD to the WORD. Cande and Sev TOTALLY see SL as their own little fiefdom and Cris is just a serf in it. Maybe he's a higher level serf since he's their child...but they really do seem to regard him as just another little toy in their power games.
WORD Part Deux.
Oh when it hits the fan, it's gonna be epic. Is it sick that I'm kind of rubbing my hands in anticipation?
Hellashelle, I'm with you and Aldonza's selfishness toward her aunt, and while I cheered when she strolled into the living room to confront Sev and Cande she didn't even give Adelina the courtesy she was going for some air. She's also spending money like a drunken sailor despite tepid protest from the woman that changed her diapers.
I'm so spoiled. The second they do something th eslightest bit off that I notice I'm like "how could you notice that?! It's so obvious?!" But then I miss half the innuedo and half of the obvious points myself!
Hellashelle, I could see why they wouldn't want to use him just to show him moping about or whatever, when that's not really important to the action. I suppose he'll pop back up when Renato actually has to talk to him about something.
Ok. I'll allow him to forgive Cande... if she's dying, or in a convent...or some how repentant.
But he should NEVER forgive Sev.
In Cris's defense, everyone in his life is super cray cray. He's pretty normal in real world standards (except for his love of Aldonza, which is very TN). But aside from his mom freaking out at the church, his parents have never given him any indication that they're capable of half of what they've done. Like, seriuosly, if you're ex (who disappeared without a trace and refused to tell you why and wouldn't even talk via FB) showed up and told you your dad had someone shoot up her house and tried to steal it away (and set fire to her farm and has a lover and raped her a few years ago and stole her baby sibling and helped kill her father and burn his body) WITH NO PROOF, and your dad said "um...no. That woman is crazy." would you be like "no! you're crazy! Obviously you did all of those things! I believe this person that I've seen for a total of two hours in my entire life over you because you're obviously evil as evidenced by your smirk and predominantly black three piece suits."
But, I agree...if he finds out everything and then tries to cram everyone together at the dinner table because "forgiveness" I'm gonna hurl.
tofie, for all the cliches, we are missing a town mystic. Nobody casts bones or reads the cards or has visions. That makes me kind of sad.
They're also breaking the cardinal TN rule that whoever gives one of the good guys the news first is lying, but is always believed. Cris has never believed the first person to tell him something--he's always believed the person that on any other show we would WANT him to believe. Like, how refreshing that he believed Val, his fiancee, over Lardo the random skank-boy...except that skank-boy really was telling the truth!
I see what you did there, show.
But deep down, what would really kill both of them, is to lose their power. They both thrive on it in their individual ways. Sev I think it's safe to assume is a dead man walking, but for Cande, having Cris walk away from her would crush her, but even more than that would be to lose her standing and that ranch with the prestige that goes with it. And to boot...nothing would give her more heartache than to have the truth of E-man come our and Cris hand over the ranch to him and walk away. That's a scene I wish with anything I could see happen.
Love my Captcha today--the exact same as my lunch, same selection of sushi I'm enjoying. Is that a sign of some sort?

ITA with you on Cande. Losing Cris would burn her deep, but she'd still pull herself up the way she does and clear her face for the public. Losing Cris AND the public? No, she'd take herself out if that happened.

I just had to identify guinea pigs. I have also had beer, wine, cake, steak, sushi. So odd.
And those kinds of villains are the worst. But maybe it's because there are too many people like that in real life.

Sara, sorry I missed you on the patio for coffee that a.m. It took me until this afternoon to get through the episode. Fell asleep trying to watch late last night. Tried again this after noon and again fell asleep, but finally woke up enough to finish it up.
If company doesn't stay to late will watch tonight. AND, Sara congratulations to both you and your daughter.
Susanlynn, it doesn't help that Pru pretty much tells Val that she's a princess and should have anything she wants. And Humberto goes along with it all because it's either that or have to listen to the two of them shrieking at him.
Gracias, Lila :D
Gracias, Emeraldrose! I think some people also use "senora" the way they would use "dona"--as a sign of respect, rather than referring to marital status. I think Cris was just being deferential. Oh, Mr. 5ft will survive :D
