MEPS 04/10/09 - Salvation and Deliverance: The Old Lil’ Is Back!

Capítulo 39
We join in progress the continuing argument between Nanda and her daddy as hypertensive heart patient Gonzo, with only momentary twinges of guilt, tempts all of the Three Fates by screaming in triplicate at the top of his lungs that he absolutely did the right thing by separating Fernanda from Eduardo all those many years ago. From behind the door in the hall, reigning and bitchin’ babe, Barbie, has heard all she needed. The Barbot smugly smiles from ear to ear at having regained control at Hacienda Elizalde by sowing the seeds of discord once again. She slips silently away as female viewers throughout the whole of Viewerville scrape their finger nails across their t.v. screens in futile attempts to scratch the celluloid witch’s eyes out.

Nanda tells her daddy that she kept quiet all these years because she knew it’s a waste trying to change Gonzo’s mind about what happened. He reached his own conclusions and she has to respect them. Gonzo screams in disbelief that his daughter has turned against him and is now justifying all of Ed’s abuses. Nanda tells him she refuses to continue the argument and will do whatever her heart and conscience dictate, and then leaves--and not a moment too soon, ‘cause it seems that Gonzo’s gaskets are about to spring a serious leak, that is, provided his cerebral circuitry doesn’t short out first.

Meanwhile, Estev and Ed are discussing the dicey situation with Lili’s bolt from Las Animas after her two older brothers showed up out of the blue. Ed’s worried that if she runs into the wrong person she might give away his real identity and everything he’s done up to now would have been all for nothing. Estev, in his best philosophical Gringlish, assures his BFF that he’s got to crack a few eggs to make an omelet (huh?), or rather (in an English translation of the more sensible Spanish “dicho”/saying that conveniently flashes on the screen) “…anything that’s worth the effort doesn’t come without a bit of conflict.”

At the same time Nanda’s big brother, Any Balls, is rather presumptuously purchasing tickets for Fer and Damian’s honeymoon for the following Saturday. He figures that that should be time enough to get her together with Franco Santoro and put ink to his Big Bidnez deal with Powhere Meelk.

Back at the hacienda, Santiago has a brainstorm and he decides to go into town looking for the Edster with his faithful shadow, Rory. He stops in at the Mud Wrassler’s Cantina and asks one of the waitresses if a guy named Eduardo Juarez has been hanging around there. Sherlock San admits he hasn’t seen the guy for fifteen years and can’t describe him. (All together now: “NO SH!T, SHERLOCK!) So, Santiago stumble-bums his way into the hotel connected with the bar to check whether Ed is registered there.

Barbie steps outside the main house to call Dr. DementOh! Matamentes Obregon at Loonyland with the news that Fernanda will be visiting Lili; so he’d better make darned sure that nothing out of the ordinary goes wrong. She says she wants Lili drugged but awake again like the last time. DementOh! is practically crawling out of his skin by now, wondering how he’s going to weasel his way out of this one. He tells her not to worry; that he has everything under control.

Damnian drives up just as Barbie finishes her call. After receiving a few choice insults about newlyweds and shriveled…er...brains, he reports to the Barbot that in a couple of days the plant’s entire production will be lost. No worries about derailing business meetings then because Franco Santoro will want nothing more to do with Grupo Lactos. To top it off, with the results of an unexpected visit from the international inspectors, neither will anybody else from Powhere Meelk. (Ok. Ok. So, if he knows they’re coming, it isn’t exactly unexpected, is it?) Bitch-Barbie is elated.

Just then, Nanda comes outside to greet Damian and invites him along to visit Lili with her. Babs sweetly tells her not to get her hopes up because the doctor says Lili’s still the same as before. Fer surprises Babs by telling her that she knows this isn’t the only time that Eduardo has gone to the asylum looking for Lili, and that with all that’s been happening she simply forgot to mention it. Babs wonders if she thinks Ed actually got a chance to speak with Lili. Fer says that’s precisely why she’s going back to see her.

AB and Cadmilo drive up just then. AB says they’ve got to have a quick family business meeting over something important. Cad tells Fer and Dam about the tickets AB so thoughtfully bought the two of them and says AB’s generously giving the two of them an extra month off for it. Fer is ticked and tells AB that it was none of his business. He tells her to do what she wants to with them, but they all need to go inside to discuss the business. Barbie wonders to herself what kind of nifty little surprise Anibal has cooked up for them all this time.

Finally, Martina and Lili have found their way to Hacienda Elizonde. Martina tries to make Lili understand that she can’t go the rest of the way with her because it would be too awkward. Lili panics at the last second and says she can’t go back there after all because nobody there wants her, except for Fernanda. She breaks down in tears again. Jacinto finds the two of them standing there.

At Jacinto’s house, Gardenia is telling Margarita how upset she is about what’s happened with Soledad’s house. She decides that she’s going back to Las Animas right away to ask for Don Santoro’s help to get the house back and she races out. Margo can’t stop her and worries Denia will find out that Eddie’s hiding Lili over there.

Back in the back forty at the hacienda, Martina tells Jacinto that, no, Fr/Ed doesn’t know they’ve left Las Animas. He tells them he’s taking them back there but since Lil now thinks her brothers are going to be regulars at Las Animas, she freaks and refuses to go back to Ed’s place. Jacinto is muy negatively impactado and scowls at them.

Inside the main house, meanwhile, Fer and AB argue about setting up a meeting to discuss the community center with Fr/Eduardo. She refuses to meet with him about the project because they refused to take her point of view into consideration earlier. She says it’ll be priority one, but not till after she and Dam get back from their honeymoon. Her timeline nearly gives Anibal a heart attack since it throws a monkey wrench into his carefully crafted plans. AB attacks her weak point. “Ok, Fernanda! Whatever you say! Just remember you have the future of Grupo Lactos in your hands and now you are turning your back on us!”

Back at Jacinto’s, Ed drives up looking for his friend, but Margo tells him that he’s over taking care of things at the Elizalde’s. She gives the details about Denia heading back to Las Animas and says she’s worried Denia will find out about Lili. He explains how Lili saw her brothers over there and ran away with Martina and now he’s got to find them both.

Meanwhile, Denia is on her way back to Las Animas and entertaining herself with thoughts about the various ways Don Santoro will kick Lucio’s sorry backside out of Soledad’s house.

Margo wonders if Martina and Lili are headed back to the hacienda, but Ed doesn’t think Lili would go there considering how afraid she is of them. He says he believes the reason she’s afraid of her family has something to do with the letter his mother wrote. Ed confirms to her that everything Sole wrote about is true and that Lili really is in danger. Margo hints that she might know who is behind it all and they go back inside the house to discuss it.

Inside the main house again at the hacienda, Anibal explains to Fernada that he needs her to meet with Santoro before she leaves for her honeymoon. When she balks, he emphasizes that he needs Santoro’s answer right away. She says not until she returns from visiting Lili. So AB tries laying a guilt trip on her for not immediately jumping on the family-business-at-all-cost bandwagon. Gonzo wakes up from his stupor and decides he has had enough of the family in-fighting. He blames it all on the Powhere Meelk deal with Santoro and orders Anibal to tell Santoro that they will decline the proposed association with Powhere Meelk because no contract is worth tearing the family apart like this. Babs is secretly delighted ‘cause it’s now two down and one to go.

Any Balls finds a little testicular fortitude here and tells his father “No!” He insists they cannot go back on Powhere Meelk for all the prior reasons they discussed back at the office. Gonzo smiles in a senile haze and says it still time enough for Grupo Lactos to have had a change of heart. AB looks like he’s ready to pull his hair out, but his dad’s scalp is going to come first.

Back at Jacinto’s, Margarita reminds Ed that “La Hiena” has had a hand in every rotten thing that’s happened to them over the years. Ed tells Margarita that he thinks the enemy they are fighting is probably somebody much more powerful than just Babara Greco. Margarita deflates and says then there’s no hope for any of them. Eddie starts to disagree when there’s a knock at the door. It’s Jacinto. (Guess he forgot his key?) He’s got Margarita and Lili in tow.

Eddie breathes one hell of a sigh of relief and tries to convince Lili that he would never hand her over to her two brothers. He tells her that he realizes she doesn’t mean a thing to them and that she wants nothing to do with them, either. He says he promised “her nana” that he’d take care of her and he intends to. “All I want to do is to help you regain something of the life you lost while being locked up in the asylum all these years.” Lili says she believes him and Martina now realizes that he really is Eduardo.

LIli begs Eduardo to help Ciro get out of the asylum too. He tells her he can’t and finally tells her about Ciro’s accident. She starts in with the cryptic chess references again and then through fits and starts explains that Dr. DementOh! was planning to “fry” her brain [freir el cerebro] with electroshock. She remembers then that Ciro must have created a distraction that allowed her to escape. Ed explains to her that Ciro produced an explosion and was seriously hurt because of it.

Ciro, meanwhile, is still mumbling Lili’s name off and on in his room while Adolfina tends to him. All of a sudden his wife and son burst into the room and are impactado when they see him hooked up to monitors. The first thing his wife asks Adolfina is if he’s said anything to her. Adofina shakes her head no. Greedy wife and gumpy son try talking to him, but when there’s no response, Momma tells Gumpy they’ve got to get to a lawyer quick for some document they need to get Ciro to sign “in case anything happens to him.” They race back out the door.

Back at Jacinto’s, Lili becomes very agitated over what’s happened to Ciro and she begs Eduardo to take her back to see him. Ciro helped save her, she says, and so she has to help him now. Ed promises to do whatever she wants, but he tries to explain that if she goes back to the clinic to see Ciro she will not be able to get out of there again. Lili says that doesn’t matter and begs him to take her back anyway.

On the way to the asylum, Fer and Damnian have stopped for gas. She remembers back a few days ago when Fr/Ed ran into her at the gas station and the way her heart (and the rest of ours) went pitty-pat when he smiled. “Ah, who would have thought that the mystery man, Franco Santoro, would become my best friend’s hero?” Just then Dam comes back with a bag of candy for Liliana. He gets in and gripes about having to put off their honeymoon again because of the business with Powhere Meelk. Fer reminds him that now it’s because the deal depends on her. Dam smirks. “Your brother boasts [ufanarse] about his being the manager because he knows dairy products and it turns out you’re the indispensible one in resolving company financial matters.”

Damnian now tries to persuade Fer to leave on their honeymoon the next day instead, but she says she doesn’t want to leave that soon. She needs to speak with Eduardo first. He blows up at her and says the guy already wrecked their wedding and now she’s going to let him do the same with their honeymoon plans. “Don’t you think you’re making too much of a Mr. Nobody?” Nanda says Dam just doesn’t understand. He says, “You’re right. I don’t! I don’t understand why you’re giving so much consideration to a guy like him. Or is it that Eduardo Juarez is more than just your nana’s son?” Fer gets just as angry with Damn and says, yes he is more than just that. “He’s been concealing himself and screwing around with the family, which now includes you, BTW, and so isn’t that reason enough to want to stand up to him?” “—NO!” says Dam.

Damnian is now totally pissed (and if he wasn’t such a two-timing pig I’d have said he had a right to be more than a little bit angry at this point, but he is and he doesn’t). Dam says okay, fine. When she gets this thing taken care of with this guy then they’ll go on their honeymoon. Fer stares back at him like where’d the Damian the Door-mat version of her new hubby suddenly just go?

On the other side of Villa Madero, Prissy is driving merrily along the road on her way home and hinting broadly on her cell phone to her brother, Rolando, that he’s probably about to be an uncle and Daddy will finally have his heir. All of a sudden, like a bad penny, Vlad appears in the middle of the road and makes her stop. Pris is very disturbed with this nutty interruption and in no mood. She asks him what he wants and he says isn’t it evident? He wants to talk. She reluctantly agrees to it and he promises it will be the last time. (Where have we heard that one before?) Vlad buckles up and asks where they’re headed. She says they’re not going anywhere. He wants to go for a drink at least or back to his apartment to talk, anything but sitting there in the car which is not exactly high on anybody’s list of romantic rendezvous options. “No! Don’t you understand?” “—I understand perfectly… because I love you.” He tries to kiss her but she turns her face away, totally exasperated with the whole situation. (Shades of Fatal Attraction here?)

Santiago finds out from Gonzo that Dam has taken Fer to the asylum to see Lili. He makes some tasteless funny at Babs that Gonzo doesn’t appreciate. Then he has a run in with his brother, Cad, who tries to flirt with Rory. Santiago manages to hold his own and Cad leaves. Suddenly Santiago tells her he thinks he’s figured out where to find Eduardo. They head out again.

Eddie drives Lili back to the clinic and tries to get her to tell him whether she read the letter Soledad left her for him. With more gibberish she essentially tells him no.

Pris and Vlad end up in a cornfield somewhere near the hacienda. She tells him that this isn’t being in love. He disagrees. He says he loves her more than anybody ever, even her husband, has ever loved her. He knows that it’s difficult for her to accept because she’s not used to having a man really love her. She gets flustered and tells him to stop acting like a stupid adolescent. What happened between them was just a matter of a momentary attraction and it’s over now. He says for her but not for him and he is upset that his feelings don’t matter. She tells him it was only a passing fancy [capricho], not love. He insists that his is not a “passing fancy” any more than hers is a “marriage.” “--You’re marriage has no future and you know it. What is it you’re waiting for in order to get the divorce?”

Pris gets angry and tells him he’s gone too far. He ignores her and says they both know she’s not happy and she can’t deny it. She wants him out of her car. He gets out and she tells him never to come looking for her again. He is totally clueless and wants her to tell him why. He keeps banging on the window and yelling for her to please tell him what he did wrong. (Why is watching her treat him this way so disturbing?) She drives off. He’s frantic to understand why he’s been rejected like this and keeps asking himself over and over, “What did I do? What did I do?”

Prissy’s loveless other half (AB), meanwhile, makes a phone call to Cad at the stables and tells him he’s not about to lose the deal with Powhere Meelk and so to make sure Jacinto gets over to Las Animas right away. Cad finds Jacinto and tells him to get over to Franco Santoro’s place to discuss the details about taking care of the guy’s horse. He warns Jacinto to make sure there are no mistakes or he’ll skin him alive.

Dr. Matamentes (ever feel this guy should be one of the inmates rather than one of the guards?) is sneaking another swig out of his flask when there’s a knock at the door. He pockets the flask and gets fidgety when he sees it’s Dam and Fer. (Ok. Anybody with half a nose should be able to smell liquor on that guy’s breath from across the room, especially the way he’s been at it lately. These two conveniently do not and Viewerville adjusts the controls on its collective beanie to compensate for this temporary lack of olfactory nerve response by the characters.) They tell Dr. D that they are there to see Lili. He stalls and says something about the hospital being short-staffed today. Finally he calls up Adolfina to see if he can buy more time somehow. Adolfina pops her head in the door a moment later. He asks if Lili’s awake, broadly hinting that she needs to answer in the negative, but Adolfina smiles and says that Lili is awake and is waiting for them. Obregon’s mouth drops to the floor.

Santi and Rory show up at Soledad’s house thinking they might find Eduardo staying there, but nobody is around and the house looks empty. Lucio drives up to the house in the SUV. Santiago is muy impactado and not a little upset to find out that Babs gave Sole’s house to their sleazy chauffeur.

Dr. D follows Adolfina and the others into Lili’s room. His eyes go wide just as a mysterious hand suddenly grabs him by his collar and pulls him back through the door. It’s Eduardo and he throws the doctor down onto a couch and tells him things are going to change radically around there starting NOW. DementOh! wants to know why he’s there. Ed growls back that he doesn’t have time to draw him a picture. “Suffice it to say that from now on there are going to be a number of changes at this clinic.” “--And why do I have to follow your orders?” Ed tells him he knows about Lili’s escape and about Ciro’s being hurt by an explosion he set off because the doctor was planning to leave Lili like a vegetable. “--Have you told the Palafox family yet about everything that’s happened?” Matamentes starts yelling at Eduardo that he doesn’t have any proof of anything and tries to run out the door, but Ed’s too fast for him and grabs him. “I’m going to show you what I am capable of. I can prove you’re inept and I will go public about your outrageous acts with the patients here!” Ed grabs Matamentes by the collar again and this time lifts him off the ground about 2 inches. (Damn, this is better than chocolate!) “Do you have any doubt who is giving orders around here from now on?” “—None!”

Back in Lili’s room, Fernanda starts questioning her sister just as Dr. DementOh! walks in. Lili clams up. Fer asks her sister if she was the one who called and left word about Eduardo the other day. Lili hesitates a second or so then says yes. The doctor says that’s impossible because the patients aren’t allowed access to the phones. Fer ignores him and asks her if she saw Ed the other day. “You saw him, right?” Lili tells Fer that she’s not saying anything unless the doctor leaves.

Fer says the doctor is only there in case she needs something. Lili insists he’s got to leave first. He refuses. Fer tells her it doesn’t matter if he’s there or not because whatever she says, nothing will happen to her. Lili avoids answering Fernanda at first by pretending she can only speak gibberish. Dr. D. insists that because of Lili’s illness, Fer won’t be able to have a coherent conversation. Suddenly Lili turns to look at Matamentes. “I am NOT sick! If I don’t answer it’s not because I am unable to but because I don’t want to!” The others are speechless. Yes, indeedy! The old Lil is back and in more ways than one!

Tontas no Van Friday 4/10 Tears of Joy, Tears of Sadness and Two Big Shocks

Many of us felt that for about the first third of this novela, Candy was meeting Santiago and repeatedly avoiding Patricio. We called this London. Once she finally revealed herself to Pat, the second phase of the story began, the one where Pat and Santi were competing for Candy. Both guys were doing pretty well, except that Santi was going to marry Marissa. Candy convinced him to call off the wedding, but mainly for Santi’s own good. She wasn’t ready to commit. Pat turned up the heat, moved in, and it almost looked as if he had won, until Candy admitted she didn’t really love him. That was Paris. Now, things are more mixed up than ever. My take on this is that we’ve left Europe for the New World. In the final third of the novela (I think we still have about 50 episodes left), we’re going to have to cross the ocean. And from tonight’s episode, it looks as if there’s much stormy weather ahead.

We start off happily enough, revisiting the scene where Charly tells the immunologist that the neighbor was HIV negative. This means when he had sex with Lucía, he wasn’t infected. He must have gotten HIV from the girl he slept with once while he was temporarily selling drugs. The good news is Lucía is definitely disease free – the bad, Lucía will find out that he betrayed her.

Charly tells Candy about this. He totally forgot about the girl, whose name was Daniela. Charly doesn’t want anything to do with her – that was from his brief drug phase that he’d rather put behind him. But Candy says the girl has to be told, or she could infect other guys. Also, Candy tells Charly there’s a party tonight at Santiago’s and Charly should tell Lucía, so she’ll know she’s disease-free, and doesn’t have to wait the 3 months for the confirmatory studies. Charly doesn’t want to tell, because Lucía will also realize he had sex with Daniela while he was Lucía’s boyfriend. Candy lays down the law – either you tell her, or I will.

We have a little humor at the restaurant, as two tough looking chicks come in with two tough looking guys. Zamora doesn’t see the guys, tries to hit on the gals (he says something like the first course is kisses, the second course is romance), but when the guys return to the table, they’re not too happy with his flirting, and one of the bruisers lifts him up and deposits him away from the girls. Patricio enters, looking for Candy, and is told about the party at Santiago’s, to which he wasn’t invited.

Meño is having a father-son chat with Charly. He advises Charly to tell Daniela, and by doing so, Charly can save lives. He wants Charly to grow up and do the right thing. Charly sadly states that tonight he’s going to lose Lucía. Meño hopes that Lucía’s joy at finding out she’s disease-free will outweigh her resentment that Charly was with the other girl.

Party time at Santi’s house! There are lots of silver balloons, and people are arriving. Lucía tells Isabel that Charly’s avoiding her. Candy takes Santi aside to tell him something important. Gregoria and Meño playfully battle over what hors d’oeuvres Meño should be eating, since he hasn’t gotten back the studies from when he recently fainted, but it sort of looks as if she just wants more for herself! (she takes the whole tray from Tina, leaving Tina with one half sandwich). Candy tells Santi the good news about Charly and Lucía, says he can tell Isabel, but let Charly tell Lucía. Santi gives a big hug to his amiga (repeated a few times for emphasis).

Isabel comes upstairs to tell Santi the guests are waiting for their host (anfitrión). Santi doesn’t tell Isabel the news yet, but praises Candy for how pretty she looks. After Isa leaves, Santi says the public is clamoring for Agua Mineral, his band. He brags that the public likes him as much as El Potrillo (“the little colt”, nickname for Alejandro Fernández). Santi thinks he’s pretty much a carbon copy (copia carbón) of Alejandro, even though Santi’s taller. Candy laughs, says no way.

The whole family has gathered around a makeshift stage set up in front of the fireplace. There’s pink lighting, all those silver balloons, silver foil curtains, and the band equipment is set up. Santi takes the stage, greets the crowd. He talks about family. It was hard for Santi when his Dad died, but his mother’s love brought him through it. He’s also grateful for the affection of his two lovely daughters. Viva la familia! He shouts, as silver confetti rains downs from the second floor balcony.

Santi then introduces the band. First up is “Ricky”, actually Raúl, who plays bass. “Johnny” is Carlo, on lead guitar, cap on backwards, sleeveless muscle shirt. “Charlie” is Miguel, on keyboards. Last up is “René”, actually Ed, on drums. The guys have composed a song for a special person (not the Taco song, he adds). It’s for Candy, and the crowd goes woo woo as Candy smiles. The song begins, and it’s a ballad (it’s actually pre-recorded with a real band, Jaime Camil singing, Santi lip-synching, so everything is just right). The song is called “Señora de nadie” and you can see the Spanish lyrics here

Jaime Camil - Señora De Nadie lyrics | LyricsMode.com

Here’s my attempt at a translation. This is the complete song, but they skipped the second verse, due to time constrictions.

I have a question
Stuck here in my heart
Why have you left
In the middle of those kisses?

I have a broken dream
And an eternal yesterday
I suffer too much
And you destroy what I feel

Now there’s no cure for my soul
How to forget what we were
I’m a boat at the bottom of the sea

Chorus:
Lady of no one
Why do you go away from me
Leaving me like this
Killing the love I gave you blindly?

Lady of everyone
You miss me and I die
I can’t live crying for you like this
Suffering to the end
Looking towards a heaven
That no longer shines

(Santi now skips down to *)
I have a smile
That turned into silence
I live in the lonely shadow of memory

I sleep with your shadow next to me
And your absence is a sin
Now there’s no faith that could save me

Lady of no one
Why do you go away from me
Leaving me like this
Killing the love I gave you blindly?

Lady of everyone
You miss me and I die
I can’t live crying for you like this
Suffering to the end
Looking towards a heaven
That no longer shines

*How was it that it ended?
My heart won’t accept this conclusion
If the road is to forget
I don’t want to take another step

Lady of no one
Why do you go away from me
Leaving me like this
Killing the love I gave you blindly?

Lady of everyone
You miss me and I die
I can’t live crying for you like this
Suffering to the end
Looking towards a heaven
That no longer shines

Maybe it should be called "Nobody's lady" rather than Lady of No One, I'm not sure. Please let me know if you have some better ideas for any of the translation. Anyway, it’s a beautiful song, and the crowd is swaying gently to the music. I sort of thought it would be happier, and it could actually be used by Patricio at this point, but let’s not quibble.

More confetti rains down from the production assistants upstairs, and the crowd chants “boda, boda!” Charly gets a determined look, inspired by the good feelings, he grabs Lucía’s hand and takes her upstairs to tell her the truth. Meanwhile, Santi takes Candy aside and asks if she liked the song. Yes. “So did I” says Patricio, who has crashed the party, and has a wounded look. Why wasn’t I invited to a family party, asks Pat? Candy struggles with her answer. “I just thought it would be better”. We go to commercial as Candy and Santi have embarrassed looks, Pat’s face shows hurt.

Pat and Candy sit down to discuss the situation. Pat feels that if Candy just told him there was a party but he wasn’t invited, that would have been okay, but she didn’t even tell him anything. Candy says it was a family party organized by Santiago. But Pat doesn’t understand, his son is here, his mother-in-law, his wife, isn’t he part of that family? Candy gives him the sad news. She no longer views herself as his wife. Pat is crying away, as Candy says forgive me, over and over. She’s been trying to tell him that she no longer views herself as his wife, and because of that, they shouldn’t be living together.

Upstairs, Charly summons up his courage, and tells Lucía that he betrayed her with Daniela. At first, Lucía doesn’t get it, but when she realizes what this means, that she had sex with Charly before he was with Daniela, and therefore she’s disease-free, she is ecstatic! But both of them are feeling a little guilty. Charly doesn’t want to appear too happy about the disease-free thing, because he knows Lucía will be mad about the Daniela thing. Lucía doesn’t want to appear too happy about her being disease-free, since Charly does have HIV. But overall, they’re happy, and they’ll deal with whether they’re still novios later.

Santi is hiding behind some silver streamers, listening to Pat and Candy’s weepfest. Candy was surprised when Pat moved in, but said okay because of Chava. However, it just didn’t work out. Pat is pleading for another chance, but it’s too late. Candy gently lets him know that although he can see Chava whenever he wants, he’s going to have to move out. Our weepers are interrupted by ever-smiling Chava, he’s sleepy, completely oblivious to his parents’ crying, and Pat will take him home and tell him a great bedtime story.

Lucía has rushed downstairs to tell everyone she’s definitely not sick, and there are hugs all around, with Isabel, Santi, Gregoria, etc. Meño takes Charly aside, he is super proud of his son, Charly was very brave. Charly says he’s lost Lucía, but he doesn’t feel guilty, because he told the truth. Gregoria comforts a still-crying Candy. Santi tells the crowd to party again, let’s rock and roll! The dancing starts. In the kitchen, Donato tells Tina the good news, and they start dancing. Santi tries to get Candy to dance, but he can’t cheer her up, and when Lucía grabs him for a happy rock and roll dance, he has to let Candy go. Charly is also still hurting. He tells his Dad that “fuera dolor” doesn’t always work, and Meño consoles him.

Back at Candy’s house, Pat is alone on the couch in the semi-darkness, clutching a photo of Chava, unable to sleep. Candy comes downstairs in her robe to talk a little more. Pat says he’ll leave tomorrow. Candy sits down, takes a deep breath, and says “Patricio. I tried.” She tells him she really does “love” him (te quiero), but not the amor kind of love. Pat says tomorrow they have to tell Chava. Candy softly agrees, and says good night. She walks upstairs, and the camera shows her fading in and out, sort of fading away from Pat’s life, and I have to admit, as much as I have criticized Pat for crying, I was crying with him at this point.

In the morning, Candy is asking Meño how to handle the discussion with Chava. Should she just live with Pat, and bear things? No, replies Meño, that would go against everything you’ve been preaching in your column. You need to be true to yourself. Life can hurt, but you have to be truthful. Inventing a life never works. Look at what happened when he tried to make Charly think he wasn’t gay! He chuckles at the memory of how he acted macho. Candy can’t stand the fact that Chava is going to cry. Meño says crying is not bad. Tears are worth more than hate and resentment. And it’s better to cry alone, than to hate in company (más vale llorar sola que odiar compañada).

We now jump to Chayo, at home in tee shirt and jeans, ironing one of Ed’s dress shirts, while watching a telenovela on the tv. The character on tv is crying, she keeps trying to get pregnant, but can’t, as Chayo nods. Chayo says to herself she also envies those with children, wants to be a mother, as the doorbell rings. She opens the door and is faced with a young woman, standing with a cute little boy, 5 or 6 years old, in front of her. The woman wants to see “Lalo” and Chayo is a little taken aback with the woman’s using Ed’s nickname. But that’s nothing compared to what comes next. The woman says to tell Lalo not to stop sending money, because she needs it to eat. What? She goes on to say that Ed has two houses, and she’s his other wife. The little boy, Lalito (he gives a cute wave) is Ed’s son! Chayo feels faint.

In the restaurant, Zamora is scolding Toño for calling the radio show and betraying the guys. Toño couldn’t resist when Candy asked, and Zamora forgives him, but tells him to act more like a man. Z puts on a big voice to show T how to tell a woman who’s boss (but he’s looking way up at the imaginary woman, since Toño’s so short!). Toño says maybe he’ll go to the Institute to work on his self esteem. Zamora thinks he should instead go to Santi’s clinic for plastic surgery, and draws a bunch of lines in crayon all over T’s face, to show where improvements could be made.

As Lalito sucks on a lollipop, Ed’s “second wife” relates how she needs money. But she’s afraid to ask Ed, or he might hit her again! What, he hits you? asks Chayo. Doesn’t he hit you? is the reply. No. The woman says there are lots of things you don’t know about Lalo. She then asks the boy if he’s hungry. He nods. She tells him you’ll have to hold it, because we don’t have any money. (This whole thing seems very suspicious to me). But if it’s an act, Chayo is buying it. She says, you know what? I’ll give you food, we’ll go to the store, I’ll buy him clothes. The woman says she has no money. Don’t worry, I do. Setting her jaw, she adds, what’s more, I know where Lalo hides his savings!

Chava is getting ready to go to a Chivas practice with Pat. Candy tells him that afterwards, she and Pat want to have a talk with him. Chava wonders if he did anything wrong, as Pat enters, telling him he’s the best behaved boy in the world. Then what do you two want to tell me? asks Chava.

At work, Santi is telling Ed that he’s going to tell Marissa about calling off the wedding. Ed says to be careful, she’s crazy. Santi corrects him, she’s not crazy, just has a “personality disorder” (desorden conductual). Okay, Ed thinks it’s wise to tell her. Santi adds that with all that happened with Lucía, he’s realized that life is short, he shouldn’t waste time in a phony marriage with Marissa. He doesn’t love her. In fact, can he be honest? He hates her! But what about your kid, reminds Ed. Well, of course I love him. Ed counsels waiting until the day of the wedding, because Marissa would want revenge. Ed reminds Santi of how Mari has been manipulating Santi, just as the phone rings. Santi sees it’s Mariloca, remarks that she’s a witch, calling just as they’re talking about her. Mari wants Santi to take her to the ob/gyn, she’s had a little spotting, or light bleeding (sangrado). Ed doesn’t believe it, but Santi has to go.

We’re at the local equivalent to Walmart. Chayo buys the woman and boy a mattress, food, the best bicycle they sell, and piles of clothes. At the car, she even gives the woman an envelope of cash. The woman tries to decline, but not too much. She gives Chayo a piece of paper with her phone number. Chayo says she’ll confront Ed, and call the woman later. The woman thanks her.

Lucía is brimming with joy, telling Isabel how happy she is, and she also wants to go to church, to give thanks for the miracle, but also to apologize to the Virgencita, since she had said some bad things to her. What about Charly, inquires Isa. At first Lucía is going to call Charly and let him have it for betraying her, but Isabel reminds her that Charly is still infected, and needs her help.

Chayo comes home, and when she enters the apartment, Ed tells her don’t make any noise, they’ve been robbed! His savings are gone. Of course they are, says Chayo, I took them. Ed is temporarily relieved, so you took them, why didn’t you just ask! Well why didn’t you tell me about your other wife, your other house, and your son Lalito! Ed says he doesn’t have any other house, wife or son. Don’t lie, spits out Chayo. The little boy looks just like you, even has the same ears as you! Ed grabs his ears. And how could you hit the woman! Ed says wait, I never hit you, did I? No, but let’s settle this right now. I have the woman’s telephone number. Either you call, or I will!

In Chava’s room, Candy tells him she does love his Dad, but they can’t live together. Neither parent can really explain why the parents have to live apart, and the tears are coming again. Pat says he’ll buy a big house where Chava and Beto can visit, with their own room, but Chava still doesn’t want him to leave. He begs his Mom to tell Pat to stay, but she says she can’t (no puedo).

Mariloca tells Santi about some phantom pain she’s having, she doesn’t want to be alone at all, who knows what can happen. Santi is ready to take her to the doctor, but she says she’s okay now, she just wants him to stay. He offers to get her something from the kitchen, some water, maybe? If it’s not too much trouble, she answers, could he get her some popcorn, some oranges and maybe some ice chips? As soon as he goes to the kitchen, she gets her evil smirk and tells her baby they’re going to live the life of luxury.

Chava is sick now with a little fever. Pat comes in, comforts his superhero, and Candy is going to call the doctor. Chava asks if his Dad has to leave. Yes, answers Pat, he does, but he can visit all the time. You can’t live here? No. Well, says Chava, I don’t want to live with my Mommy. I’d rather live with you! Dramatic music signals that we’re done for tonight!

Monday: She's baaack! (Paulina)

MEPS, Thursday, April 9, 2009, Cap. 38 - Tricks, Tramps and Triumphs

We begin with Margarita and Gardenia talking, and Gardenia spills the beans about the women at Las Animas.

Martina escorts Anibal and Camilo into the library and Camilo notes that Ed is a strange man and asks Anibal “What do you think Erika would think about the help here?” as Martina sashays in and out of the room in her less than domestic help attire. He and I have a lot in common, says Camilo, “women for hire.” Anibal actually cracks a smile.

Gardenia continues telling Margarita about being fooled, and Margarita reminds Gardenia that she has sworn to keep her mouth shut or lose her job. Margarita is ready to return to school – get the centro de Atiro going. Margarita leaves and Gardenia wonders why she hasn’t been let go and what kind of game is being played.

Prissy is exasperated. Vlad keeps calling. He wants to know how she is and wants to hear her voice. She now knows she made a mistake and that Vlad, the stalker, has to know he’s lost.

Jacinto is in the barn brushing down a horse when Fernanda enters. She says straight out – “You’ve seen Ed, no?” Jacinto is shocked.

Ed sneaks back to Las Animas (Why does he have to sneak back into his own house?) He sees Anibal and Camilo in the library. If this is supposed to build suspense, it just doesn’t do it for me.

Jacinto says, “No, senorita, why?” Fernanda says that Ed’s secretary said he’s been in Mexico for a while. She says, “Promise me you’ll let me know as soon as he arrives.” Margarita arrives in the barn just in time. Margarita has some flowers and has something for Fernanda. Margarita hands Fernands the medal Fernanda had given Ed.

Ed enters the library just like nothing happened. Camilo can’t help himself and has to make a remark about Martina. Ed wants them to see the horse. Ed says he learned to ride on a horse given to him by his father when he was a kid. He flashes back to an argument he had with Camilo when they were kids and remembers that Camilo humiliated him.

Martina and Lili are at the hacienda. Lili is frantic and wants to leave. She sees her brothers and says they don’t love me. Ed put me in a trap. When you’re well, says Martina, we’ll get you out of here.

Adolfina is with Ciro who seems to be trying to say something. Anyway, it never gets said.

Fernanda has the medal in her hand and flashes back to the day of her First Communion and when she gave the medal of the Virgin de la Luz to Ed. Ed swore he’d never take it off, not even to bathe. They kissed. Fernanda now cries. She asks Margarita where she found it. Margarita tells her she found when she went to cut some flowers for Soledad. Margarita relates that she saw the initials on the medal. Fernanda says that it could only have been there a few days. Ed must have lost it when he returned to look at his mother’s grave. She says to Jacinto and Margarita, “You know what’s happening here – why doesn’t he come?”

Anibal says see, Camilo, Franco is a horseman. Saleroso is the horse that he bought. Camilo wants to know how because he’s chased that horse for years. Ed says it was a stroke of good luck. Ed tells him the horse is in the barn and ask about a good trainer. Anibal mentions Jacinto’s name Camilo calls Jacinto a despicable Indian. Ed says Jacinto couldn’t be that person and is clearly annoyed with Camilo. Camilo tells Ed about Natasha’s fall and that it was Jacinto’s fault. Anibal says that that turned out not to be true. Ed wants to know when Jacinto can start work at Las Animas – tomorrow, says Anibal.

At Grupo Lactos it is not business as usual. Damian is asking about a truck that has just arrived. He wants to see lab reports about the products from small producers. He wants reports for the last three months.

Fernanda is in tears and tells Margarita and Jacinto to let her know when Ed arrives. They don’t understand about Ed and the medal. Margarita is very afraid about what Ed is doing at the hacienda.

Lucio arrives at Jacinto’s place. Gardenia is working in the garden. She does not appreciate Lucio’s “piropos” and threatens him with a shovel. He came to rub in the fact that he will now be living in Soledad’s house. It’s a bonus from Barb. Gardenia tells him to get lost.

At Grupo Lactos two masked men (one is Damian) are going over the factory and the pasteurization process. Damian wants newly ordered product checked and wants to find out the vulnerability in the process. They then go to the control room. We get a lesson about temperature control in the milk factory. The chemist tells him that they can’t leave the milk at room temp because it would go bad very fast. Most kids know that.

Gardenia tells Margarita that Lucio has just been there and that he has the keys to Soledad’s house and Barb gifted him with it. Margarita flashes back to a conversation with Ed when he told her why he wanted Lucio to have it. Gardenia is disgusted.

At Grupo Lactos Damian looks intently at some monitors. He’s up to something when the engineer arrives with the lab reports. They couldn’t find any abnormality. The engineer promises him that he will not move from the place. He can count on him. Damian gives him a break. Damian enters the control room, calls Barb who wants to know if he prevented the meeting between Anibal and Camilo. Damian tells her he has something better, and she says do it. He goes into a place where there are a lot of wires and buttons and pushes one that says Danger – Refrigeration and sneaks out. He sits down at a computer and watches the displays going crazy and the temperature keeps rising. He has a sneaky Barb smile on his face.

Santiago hugs Gonzo who asks why he’s leaving because he just arrived. Gonzo tells Santiago that he’s always been a free spirit. Gonzo tells Aurora that “estas en tu casa.” Aurora tells Santiago that they have to leave at the same moment that Barb enters the room.

Her cell rings. It’s Dr. Demented who wants to talk to her about Liliana. He tells her that somebody came to see Liliana – Eduardo Juarez.

Barb asks the good doctor what happened. Dr. Demented describes him a common type, tall, wearing old denim (mezclilla) clothes. She calls him stupid. She tells Gonzo that Ed went to visit Liliana in the clinic. Gonzo looks confused.

Ed, Anibal and Camilo (while Martina and Lili run around the garden) admire the horse and Camilo tells him with a great rider, you will see who is boss. Camilo loves the horse. Ed thought bubbles that Camilo has fallen into his trap.

Barb cannot explain to Gonzo or Santiago why Ed is here. She says Ed is responsible for what happened at Fernanda’s wedding. Fernanda can’t imagine how the person she loved so much could be doing these things.

Gonzo sends Santiago out to find Fernanda. She must know what’s going on. Gonzo gets sick and Barb shuffles him off to his office – she says she’ll get him a tea.

Barb calls Deep Throat and tells him that Ed went to see Liliana but she had taken steps to prevent that. Deep Throat tells her she knows what she has to do.

Camilo gives Ed and Anibal a demonstration of his riding skills and thinks that surely Martina has hidden Lili in her bedroom. Yup – I’d think that, too.

An impatient Jairo enters the cantina – he wants to know if Venus is awake. He grabs Venus and wants to know where Martina is. She says not in this pocket or the other. She says Martina is far away from here. He swears he’ll find her.

Martina and Lili are running around the farm. OK, we know Lili has been locked away, but a worldly wise and bigger Martina could have stopped this marathon. We’re in for trouble here. Another plot twist, no doubt.

Fernanda says – so Ed was at the clinic. But Barb says Dr. Demented prevented his visiting Lili. Fernanda wants to knows why he went to see Lili. Barb wants to call the police, but, Fernanda says “no” we need an explanation. Barb doesn’t like that and mentally she refers to Ed as that “bastardo.”

At Grupo Lactos Damian is leaving the control room when the engineer enters with a woman – another distraction. Damian acts like he’s just coming back, and the engineer looks a little worried. Damian needles him a bit.

Ed tells Anibal and Camilo that Steve Norton told him Power Milk was ready to renew negotiations. Ed tells them what a great partnership this would be and that it would bring money into the country – a social investment. Anibal tells them about Fernanda’s work. Anibal says the Elizaldes have always collaborated in the interests of the region. Anibal is going to go directly to the hacienda and talk to Fernanda.

Fernanda is talking to Santiago and tells him that she’s in charge. She tells him to go on with the trip with Aurora and not to worry when the maid enters and tells her that Erika is in the living room. Aurora tells Santiago that she thinks it would be better if he stays. He says he can’t stay without her. She says she’ll wait. He says then our trip will have to wait and it’s kisses, kisses and more kisses.

Ed watches as Anibal and Camilo drive away. He goes running into the hacienda looking for Martina and Lili.

Camila tells Anibal that they are going to have thousands of dollars from this business. It will turn the Elizaldes in kings of charity and Fernanda into another Mother Teresa.

Ed can’t find Martina or Liliana anywhere in the house. He notes their things are still there. Meanwhile Lili is about to drop from fatigue. Martina says, “what now?” Lili says they must be looking for me. Martina says what about Eduardo. Lili thinks Ed is bad. She doesn’t understand. She thinks Ed brought them there to get her. Lili says let’s go to my house. “What house,” says Martina? “The Elizalde house,” says Liliana.

Ed is still looking for Martina and Lili and shouting out their names and looking around the place. He’s completely exasperated, and says to himself, “Lili, please, you’re going to give it all up.”
Erika talks to Fernanda. Who’s been ignoring her. Erika wants to know what Fernando thinks of Franco Santoro and goes on about all his good qualities. Erika says I know what you’re going to say, I just met him, etc. Erika says that after Camilo she’s over it. Fernanda wishes her well –Erika says she hasn’t lifted a finger and that Ed has done it all. She self inflicts herself with self deception. Fernanda then tells her the tale of trying to catch up with Ed. Erika jokes about having only one life to live and she wants to live it with Franco. Finally she leaves and I’m relieved.

Ed tells Steve that everything is in danger.

Gonzo and Fernanda discuss Ed’s visit to Lili. She says it’s a done deed that Ed has returned and is in hiding. Fernanda wants to go after him. Gonzo thinks it might be better to avoid Eduardo Juarez. Gonzo says Ed’s out for vengeance for what happened when they were children. Fernanda says he has to recognize they they were unjust with Ed and that it was a judgment made by Barb based on one kiss. Gonzo gets real mad and reminds Fernanda that Ed is beneath their station in life and that she has to do what is right. Barb, who is hiding in the shadows, is very pleased.

Avances

Fernanda says she’s going to follow her conscience and tells Barb she thinks Ed is real close.

Martina tells Lili – look who’s coming.

Doña Bárbara - Thurs., Apr. 9: Lucía has her baby and dies; DB remembers her past and that she lost her baby

DB stares at Sapo while memories come flooding back. When Sapo asks if she remembers him, DB tries to attack him. Marisela, Santos and Melquíades come in and DB runs to shelter in Marisela's arms.

Lucía agrees to have the C-section.

Gonzalo tells Marisela that DB just appeared in his office. Marisela takes DB out. Since Santos is still present, Gonzalo apologizes for the incident to Sapo as if he doesn't know why it happened. Sapo and Facundo leave. Santos says that Gonzalo has really disappointed him. After fighting for justice in the rebellion, all he is interested in now is his ambition as indicated by the friends he keeps. Gonzalo says that his new friends are better than his old ones.

When Marisela tells DB that Sapo was her enemy, DB says that Sapo is an animal who has been hiding in hell for many years and just reappeared. She asks Marisela not to let him come near her. Then she says that she needs to sleep.

Sapo tells Facundo that they have to kill DB because it's either her or them.

Santos tells Gonzalo that the friend he treats so well is nothing but a low-class thug. Gonzalo hits back with the accusations made in the paper about Santos' handling of the Cattlemen's Association accounts. Santo replies that that was a slander and the accusations were probably made by the same person who tried to kill DB and set fire to El Miedo. "And of course, you had nothing to to do with it, right?" Santos asks Gonzalo sarcastically. Their argument is interrupted by the guard reporting that Lucía is in critical condition. Santos leaves.

Genoveva thinks Marisela should take DB away from San Fernando right away but Marisela is determined to get medical attention for her. She says if the Mohammad won't come to the mountain, the mountain must come to Mohammad.

Don Encarnación is setting himself up to blame Cecilia and Antonio for Lucía's condition. Lucía (who looks pretty good for someone with end-stage renal disease) makes him promise not to blame anyone for this situation. She made her own choices. Good thing that the priest is a witness because clearly DE isn't going to follow Lucía's wishes.

Melquíades sneaks into the room where DB is sleeping and tells her that it is dangerous here and she isn't well. He asks her to go with him so he can take care of her as always.

Lucía asks to see Cecilia. She asks Cecilia to see to it that her baby is named Lucía and when Cecilia responds that Lucía isn't leaving them and shouldn't talk that way. Lucía says that there isn't time for more lies. She asks Cecilia to remind her of how Lorenzo expressed the brevity of life. "Life is an instant in the sun ('La vida es un instante al sol')," replies Cecilia. Lucía ask two more things of Cecilia - to raise her daughter as if she were her own and that she won't let Antonio leave her again. She tells Cecilia not to let her pride or honor or stupidity keep her her from Antonio and tells her not to care about what any one says. Cecilia promises to take care of Lucía's daughter as if she were her own and will tell her that her mother was very brave and that Cecilia admires her more than anyone else. "Will you take care of him?" asks Lucía. "What do you think?" answers Cecilia. She promises Lucia to fight for Antonio with her teeth and claws this time ("con los dientes y con las uñas") like Lucía did.

Lucía asks Antonio if regrets marrying her and he says no. He loves her and she brought him a lot of peace as his friend and companion. She asks for a long passionate kiss but at the end of it she has passed out and has to be rushed into surgery.

Marisela's plan to get DB diagnosed remotely or bring a psychiatrist to DB comes to naught. Santos tells her that such things only happen in bad telenovelas. She has brought Santos to persuade DB to see the doctor but they find that she has gone with Melquíades.

In the truck on the way back to Progresso, DB has more memories.

In the hospital chapel, Antonio prays for Lucía and his child. Cecilia comes in. Antonio says that if Lucía dies, it will all be his fault. Cecilia comforts him and says that he didn't know. DE sees them together. Antonio tells Cecilia how Lucía helped him endure his time in prison. She became his hope while Cecilia was only a distant dream. He says that he loves Lucía but that is nothing to what he feels for her, his 'mariposa.' His heart is hers always. He tells Cecilia that Lucía was there with her unconditional love when he needed it after Cecilia doubted him. Cecilia acknowledges that she was stupid. She says that Lucía is the most courageous person she has ever met and Antonio has plenty of reasons to love her. Cecilia tells him that no one knows the strange and good reasons that caused her and him to share their lives with other people but they were very good people who gave them a lot.

When Santos tells Marisela that he can only imagine the hell in store for him when DB has her baby, Marisela decides to tell him the truth but Gonzalo interrupts them and the moment is lost.

Things are not going well in the operating room and the doctor asks the nurse if Lucía signed the living will document. The nurse says that she forgot. (You'd think Lucía would have taken care of this before considering how important it is to her.) But this provides an opportunity for DE to harden his suspicions against Antonio when he signs the form and follows Lucía's wishes that the baby's life come first.

The baby is born but Lucía doesn't make it. (No wonder - the anesthesiologist's mask is right over his eyes! This actor had a tiny role in La Traición as the pharmacist.)

DB tells Melquíades to stop the truck. She jumps out and starts to run as if to escape from her memories. Poor Melquíades is huffing and puffing after her.

Everybody in the waiting room gets the bad news about Lucía and DE says that Antonio was responsible for her death.

Las Tontas Thurs 4/9 - You can't keep a man at arm's length while tangled in a Tango

From last night: After their romantic dinner Candy grabs the soccer ball and demonstrates what she like about soccer games. this gives Jaime Camil an opportunity to show off his prowess at physical humor, including yelling GOOOOOOOOOLLLLLL!!! In Guadalajara Pat asks Gregoria what she thinks about his situation with Candy. Man oh man does she tell him. She says Chava loves him but Candy no. In fact she's in love with another, but she'll do anything for Chava including living with Pat whom she doesn't love. Furthermore she's bothered because Pat is using Chava to get Candy. What? He doesn't like what she has to say? Well then he shouldn't ask questions to which he won't like the answers!

Tonight: Back in the DF Santi and Candy discuss penalty kicks which she uses as a metaphor for the penalties in her own life. She doesn't like to miss when kicking a penalty and she doesn't want to miss a goal by moving in with him. Santi has a plan, she should just kick and see what happens. Well she does, he doesn't try to block the ball so she scores a goal.

Now it's Santi's turn. He kicks and Candy runs away from the ball. See, he says, we scored two goals in our life. I guffawed at this, like how stupid, really. But upon further reflection I think maybe Santi is saying that sometimes people have to step out of their own way in order to enjoy life.

Meño tells Greg his mom always said "liar, a thousand times a liar" (Mentirosa, mil veces mentirosa - this comes from a famous song sung by Alberto Beltran). He reveals that he checked with Alicia and he knows Greg is lying. She's truly bothered by his comments and her situation and ends up crying on his shoulder.

Candy and Barb write their column about violence within the family, some abuse is physical and some is psychological. Candy wonders which is worse. Barb the expert says both.

Candy's phone rings and it's Pato, he wants to see her tonight but she refuses. She adds however that she heard he was helping Alicia adopt which she thinks is very noble of him. Not enough for her to see him I guess.

She asks Barb how should she ask Pat to leave HER house. Barb is pragmatic, tell him "leave my house." Then Candy reveals to an amazed Barb that she and Pat haven't been doing "it", she sleeps in her room and he elsewhere.

Greg shows Meño a letter that Art gave to her. In it he says he's a gentleman and he's sorry if he offended her, blah blah blah, it's been a long time since he's felt anything, Attentively Arturo. She tells Meño she's stupid and should have stayed at the restaurant, but adds (again) she's afraid and God says it's wrong to be with a separated man. Meño shares his philosophy, the greatest sin in God's eyes is not to love. Greg ponders his words. (Could I possibly love this dear man more? I don't think so.)

Barb and Candy discuss examples of psychological abuse. Meanwhile Pato recalls Greg's harsh words, hugs Candy's picture and squeezes out a single tear.

Charly's mom calls to tell him that her neighbor, the one he thought infected her with HIV, took a test that came out negative. Charly is impactado and rushes off to see the infectologist (infectólogo).

Santi shows up at the House of Miracles listening to tango music on an I-Pod. He snatches Candy away from the other Miracle workers and sweeps her around the room doing his version of the Tango. This is funny because he sticks one of his ear buds in her ear and dances while at the same time trying not to tangle her in his tango. "Check it out!" he brags to the miracle workers. Candy is delighted and asks why the Tango? Turns out he woke up and realized his life is too quotidian, he does the same boring thing everyday so today he'll Tango. Actually he said a lot more but I think we get the idea. Next up, the Waltz!

Lulu and Candy (her bosom at Ole's eye level) thank Ole for agreeing to help them, as if he would say no to Candy's two pals. They hush up when Sven arrives and Ole covers by saying they were discussing onions. When Ole asks Sven about his date with Soledad Sven puns, it was "con la soledad" (with loneliness). He leaves out the part about him being a scared putz. Sven concludes that he has about as much luck with women as Ole has. Something tells me Ole might score first in the mujer department.

Over at the surgery Santi and Carlos talk about Horty. Carlos is interested but he thinks Horty doesn't like him. As they walk toward his office, Horty in the office, hears them coming and hides under his desk (Why?), scuttling ass-backwards into the kneewell. Unfortunately the kneewell is open and they see her hiding, duh.

Santi and Calros torment Horty by telling tales about her, she's the queen of all the departments, she's gorgeous, (maciza = solid, estar maciza = to be gorgeous, hunky) she goes out with a million guys and all of Santi's friends, he's taken her to the apartment, etc. until finally she jumps out and is mortified that they were making jokes at her expense. Santi tells Horti that Carlos is a good guy. She stomps off in a huff and he tells Carlos that Horti is a marvelous woman. Carlos flexes his biceps and rings the sex bell which causes Santi and Horty to react. Carlos, not in on the joke, is confused.

The Miracle workers are doing their radio show while the Abandonados watch and mock. The first call is from divorcee Carmen who reluctantly says she's in love with a married man. Carmen goes on and on about how difficult it is to love a married man, how bad and neglected she feels. Gregoria, listening at home, frets. Meanwhile Lalo squirms while the Abandonados try to calm him. The Miracle workers ask, what is a woman looking for when she begins a relationship with a married man? Soledad's face falls when Candy pipes up that the lovers always expect the man to leave his wife but it almost never happens.

Pat pays a surprise visit to Alicia. Tonight she's wearing a sexy black dress with a snakeskin "pageant sash" accent. He says he'll help her and no thank you he doesn't want to have dinner with her. "Hey, I invited you to eat, not to go to bed with me," says the viper to the chipmunk.

The Miracle workers leave the radio booth while the abandoned ones heckle them. All except Santi who nervously walks by and flirts with Candy.

Now the abandoned ones are in the radio booth complete with snacks and smirks while the miracle workers watch. Santi begins and his first words are for Candy, "I love you". The abandonados freak, meanwhile Pato at home nearly falls off his chair. Candy blurts into the microphone she loves him too...but she likes more man and less macho.

Meño's phone rings and he answers with a flourish, it's King Arthur for Gregoria. After Greg refuses to take the call he says "My sister in law tells me she's not here!"

The abandonados prattle on about the problems with women, for example they prattle too much. (I think something was bleeped out here but I'm not sure.) Sven collects all the mikes and blabs on about something.

The ladies decide it's time for Candy's sabotage. Santi gets a phone call, hooray a participant in this masculine conversation. It's Ole holding his nose to disguise his voice, do they have advice on how to cure hemorrhoids? Santi tells him the program is for discussing important problems, not medical issues. Ole insists on inquring about hemorrhoid cures, isn't Santi a doctor? Santi says yes but he's a plastic surgeon and has nothing to do with hemorrhoids. What does Plastic Surgery have to do with giving love advice, asks Ole, and doesn't the whole world have hemorrhoids? "Si Senor!!" Oops, Sven recognizes his friend's signature phrase and Santi knows he's been tricked. The piranhas laugh and wave triumphantly at the abandonados.

Pat wanders his house in a desultory fashion. He stares at pics of Candy and Chava.

The abandonados leave the booth and are forced to walk the receiving line of shame. This time the girls get to heckle the boys. Sven in particular is miffed because Candy turned his friend into a puppet, a clown, a speaker of hemorrhoids!

Santi grabs Candy for a "private" conversation in the radio booth while the peanut gallery watches and cheers. He invites her to his family fiesta then, for the benefit of the audience, they pretend to spar.

Pato is waiting for Candy, he tells her he heard Santi on the radio. She asks did he hear her response? No, he turned the radio off, was it something bad? She wants to talk it over but he says not tonight. "You're running away," she tells him. His answer is awesome, "You've run away many times when I've wanted to talk to you, so once in a lifetime isn't so bad." Just when I think the guy's a big loser he comes out with an astute statement like that.

Next morning, Lucia gets a call from Charly. Rocio eavesdrops and lovingly mocks her big sis. Lucia tells Rocio she's not sick, it was a mistake so they don't need to cry anymore.

The half bros play soccer while Pato recalls Santi's words from the night before "I love you Candy my friend", then Candy's words that she needs to talk to Pato. Pato feels the anvil hanging over his head.

Ceci advises Candi not to feel bad about Pato, real life isn't like the movies where love always has a happy ending. Candy asks has Ceci ever been in love?(Candy, how quickly you forget.) Ceci PSAs that homosexuals are very discriminated against in Mexico. She is happy to be kept busy with her work and her pals the Institutas. Sounds like Ceci is due for romance.

Horty grumpily interrupts them with something from Dr. Plastico. It's a big poster invitation "tonight a family party". Ceci jokingly reminds Candy she's in a war against Dr. Plastico and his gang.

Santi tells Isa there won't be a wedding, he's going to tell Marissa soon and at the right time, for example when he's in Japan and she's in Mexico he'll text her ha ha. Isa's pretty happy at this news and they discuss tonight's Family party with Agua Minerale. I'm thinking if Santi doesn't tell Marissa she might show up and spoil they party. What am I saying? She'd show up anyway to spoil the party.

Charly tells his infectologist that the neighbor tested negative. Doctor says Charly obviously got infected by someone else and he insists that Charly tell him everything. Charly remembers he boinked some crazy skanky ho at a party and he was stupid enough not to use protection. Dr. tells Charly the good news is he can tell Lucia that she's in no danger of contracting HIV from him but Charly cries that Lucia will dump him because he betrayed her.

Mañana - The party is in full swing. Santi and Candy comment that neither Marissa nor Patricio are anywhere in sight. It looks like Mariloca is outside and pissed off. (Heh, what did I say?) Patricio crashes the party.

Las Tontas no van - Wed Apr. 8 - A troll, heart holes, and a GOOOOOOOOOOOOLLLLLLLLLLL!!!!!!!

We start off with Ali making a promise we know she won’t be able to keep despite herself. To leave Pato alone, both of them alone if Candi loves him. She just wants her baby, she needs a reason to live. Pato leaves feeling about the same as I about Ali’s ability to carry through with that.

Candi continues to tell Santi, Pato was her life, but she doesn’t feel that any more, but she feels guilty because she feels really good seeing Chava with his Dad, and she feels really bad if she takes it away. When Santi starts bugging her about this, she reminds him he did the same with Mari. He asks her then what she will do with Pat and she says end it, but she’s not sure how. He suggests a text message. Ha.

She says she’s happy, but then there are moments like this when she is close to Santi and as they move closer cheek to cheek, the young kids come in and make fun. The couples chide each other about arms around the girls and they discuss about the kids coming to the institute tomorrow. Luci has to drag Santi away to home.
Zamora takes Sole home and she thanks him and invites him for coffee, but like a dummy he says no, and starts talking a mile a minute that it’s late and it’ll take her too long to make it, and besides they had coffee already at the restaurant, and….this reminds me of a Seinfeld episode where George was invited up for coffee and declined saying he can’t drink it it keeps him up at night, only to realize that maybe “coffee” wasn’t just “coffee” and he probably offended the girl he was with. Anyway, Zam asks if she is still in pain and she says a little, so he says he’ll put ice on it, er he means she should put ice on herself. She says see you tomorrow, he starts to leave, but then stops to ask her if they will really see each other tomorrow. She says it’s just a formality to say that, so good night. Anyway, he leaves with little birdies flying around his head and wishes her sweet dreams. He then yells something after she closed the door, but I couldn’t catch this, does anyone know? Something about being desnuda maybe? Not sure. Anyway, she smiles.

Santi and Lu arrive home to Issy and Santi tells her how the kids made up and then gives us more PSA about AIDS and how Lu will work with Candi. Issy is glad Lu is over her resentment and will learn what she needs to keep herself safe. She asks about Candi and he sort of brushes her off. She tells him not to resign himself to losing her, he should fight for love.

We switch to the other house where Pato is happy Candi waited for him for dinner, she learns he was with Ali and he agreed not to help her with the baby. He wants her to make him coffee while he runs to take a bath. She says she will, but hurry because she’s dead tired. He notes that she is distant, and she says yeah she’s got some worries, but ignore it. He runs up and her phone rings. It’s Santi, and he tells her he was going to hang up if she didn’t answer. She thinks that’s immature, but he doesn’t care; he saw a couple on the way home and the girl was wearing a Chivas shirt so this reminded him of something. She thinks maybe it was the last Classico where the Chivas won 3-2 over America. Wikipedia has super great detailed info in English about this famous match and other she talks about and their incredible rivalry. FWIW…..Viva los Chivas!!!!! (I’m a Chiva all the way….)

He says ha ha you’re funny but remembers a dream that she told him about being at the Azteca stadium the last time she went to a match with her Dad. She says oh yeah, the one where we won 3-0 under the coaching of Profe Bracamontes (her Dad in real life for those of you who didn’t know) and she remembers it was Sept. 2000. Indeed it was. He smugs that she has a good memory, but she says she just has a super Chiva memory. She always remembers when they beat America, the others she forgets. Anyway, he was talking about her dream that she made a goal in the Azteca stadium. She says that dream died because a woman can’t do that, only if she was to get put on El TRI Femenil (the Mexcian women’s national soccer team) and she’s really bad anyway so that will never happen. He says he just wanted to hear her voice so good night, and she says good night as well to Plastic Doc.
Poor Pato comes downstairs to find a cooling cup of coffee and a cool note that Candi couldn’t wait, and went up to bed. He is sad.

We go through a series of passing events, Candi and the teens attending a class and studying, Pato hanging with his kids and getting dissed by an always sleeping (not really) Candi. Santi holds a picture of the Stadio Azteca - me thinks me knows where that is going, and we see a much poppinger Marissa moaning about her mirror reflection and stick tonguing Santi’s picture.
Doc and Horty have a talk about a patient; Horty hoping he’ll help her and then they argue about when to send in the poor woman.

Candi runs down AGAIN, why it’s so great that the teens are helping. She gets a phone call, it’s Plastic doc…she agrees to see him tonight for a surprise. The teens cheer and Lu tells her how sad Pa has been because he misses her.

Enter a woman and a man into Doc‘s office, and the woman has one nasty smashed up nose. I bet I know where this is headed. Ugh. The man begs Santi to help fix her, and he promises they will get ready for emergency surgery right away. When he’s gone she tells her husband not to say anything. IN the operating room our Doc swift says the fracture is complex and strange and not like something from falling down stairs. This perplexes me, because in telenovela land people die and get paralyzed from falling down stairs, so what is so strange about multiple nose fractures? Anyway…..

Ali goes to see Candi and plays the martyr begging her to talk to Pato, because she has nothing to live for, she’s alone, empty, lost her family, hubby, Mom wants to live with you. Candi gives and agrees to talk to Pat about the baby.

Mari is at the doc whining about the pregnancy and upset that she has maybe 2-3 weeks left to go.

Santi talks to the woman, Rosa, very sweetly and asks her if in patient doctor confidence she will tell him what really happened with the four fractures she has. She says it’s not my husband. He loooves me. Santi tells her to rest and leaves.

Mari tells Ali to pack her bags, no way is she having natural birth with all it’s pain. They are going off but she gets mad when Ali asks what kind of climate they are going to. They’ll meet at the airport.

Gregoria is telling Charlie how to warm up the dinner she has made and Meno notes that she is all dressed up and must be going out somewhere. He kids her, but she says she’s going to meet her other daughter.

Meno plays his best Drag Gossip Gal and calls up Ali to find out that she is in disgust with her mother and doesn’t care to see her right now. Aha, he got his info and knows she’s lying Snark monster!!

Next we see Santi consulting with Candi and Barb about domestic violence and discussing who is ill the beater or beatee, and they determine both need counseling to break the cycle of dependence. Candi says she’ll write an article and Barb agrees to help. Santi begs Barb off. She fusses about a bit until he asks her flat out to disappear and wants to know if Candi is ready for her surprise. They are going on a flight but she has to stop by her house first and get her Chivas shirt. No she doesn’t, she has one in her drawer for whatever emergency!!!
Next we see a very nervous Gregoria meeting Arturo for dinner. So nervous she screams for a waiter at the top of her lungs in a very nice restaurant, when oone is right behind her.

Next we see Santi leading a blindfolded Candi around in the Azteca. He says they are making her dream come true. She says you are with Brad Pitt? He says no, the other one, and she says Patrick Dempsey? (whoa that’s going back….) finally she takes off the bandana to learn where she is. That’s not all, he’s managed to get Adolfo Rios to serve as goalkeep, not him. Turns out the bandana was Santi’s America shirt which he asks her if she would like to kiss for luck, she essentially tells him to stuff it and kisses her Chivas emblem. She winds up and takes her kick and Rios blocks. She sulks but Santi cheers for his America pal, but then realizes that wasn’t the point and “counsels” his friend to not try so hard, eh. He then tells A very broken up Candi that Rios moved early and so she gets a redo. I swear we see her undergarments again, but whatever. Anyway, she makes this one and of course there are hugs all around.

Santi says now it’s his turn to make his dream to come true; his dream is to marry a goat and that isn’t Mari. Well a Chiva. He tells her he’s not getting married. Mari is crazy and plays games and he’s not in love with her so he’s not going in for it.

He did all this because the airplane food sucks and well he wants her to leave Pato. She says it’s hard because of Chava but since they are in the Azteca, they’ll drop all that for now, except zero kisses. They both shout it out and sit down to dinner.

Art and Greg talk about her being nervous because his wife thought they were lovers. He tells her he thinks she’s afraid. She gets up to leave, but he begs her not to leave. He likes her and wants them to….he leans in for a kiss and she smacks him.

Santi and Candi crack up and drink like four different wines and champagnes. Santi thinks the should live together to save on lights, water, rent, she didn’t think water because she bathes a lot, he too, so of course they have to bathe together then. He teases her about her repressed sexuality but says she is sexy indeed.

Meanwhile, Pato is waiting at home. Grega returns from her non-tryst and Pato springs on her she needs to tell him the truth. She says about what and he replies Candi. She says well, crap, you left one of my daughters to be with the other what do you want me to say. I’m annoyed. He says it’s not like that. She also tells him he shouldn’t use his son to try and win her over either because as a mom she’ll do anything for her son including live with you and stomps out begging him not to ask questions if he doesn’t like the answer he gets. OK this was weird, I had no idea she hated him so much. Oh well, Telenovela land. And that’s the end for tonight.

Doña Bárbara - Wed., Oct. 29: Santos still doesn't know the truth; Gonzalo found out the truth and Lucía gets really bad news

Marisela is about to tell Santos that DB lost her baby when in her mind she hears Gonzalo's warnings that Santos will have no sympathy for DB once he knows she isn't pregnant anymore. Santos doesn't help matters by his reaction when Marisela says that she wants to talk about DB. She doesn't tell him that DB lost the baby. Instead, she tells him that DB needs to see a psychiatrist.

Eustaquia identifies the people in the photograph to DB but she says that she doesn't know any of them. DB leaves the photo on a table and Gonzalo finds it.

Cecilia tells Lucía that she is asking her to be her executioner and she can't do that. Lucía says that she only wants Cecilia to be her baby's guardian angel. Lucía says that she never robbed Antonio from Cecilia because they still love each other. She just borrowed him for a little while but now she will return him and he won't be alone. Cecilia won't agree to do what Lucía is asking. She says that she has to leave. Outside the room, Antonio has heard their conversation. He says that he can't choose between his daughter and Lucía. Cecilia assures him that he won't have to choose. Everything will be all right.

Santos tells Marisela that DB is just pretending like always. Marisela says that DB isn't pretending. She has a whole different personality - loving, feminine caring. Santos won't buy it. He says that DB is manipulating them like she always has. DB comes in and Marisela tells DB to remind Santos about their love.

Genoveva tells Melesio that she is leaving to go back to San Fernando with Marisela. She says that she wants to change her life. She wants to continue her edcuation. She says that she wants to succeed on her own and never get married. "So you're going to become a nun," says Melesio. Geno starts to say that she can't become a nun anymore but catches herself. She says that she wants to live her life alone like Cecilia. Melesio points out that Cecilia isn't alone. She has a son. Geno leaves and the alcaraván starts to call again.

Santos tries to find out if Marisela is right. When DB tells Santos that she is happy because she loves him and he loves her and they are going to have a baby, he tells DB that many bad things have happened between them. DB says that he is exaggerating. DB launches into a fantasy about the first time they made love and says that she was a virgin. Santos is surprised and says that she had many lovers before she met him and has a daughter. DB asks if Santos isn't Marisela's father. Now Santos is convinced that DB is bonkers. He says that she has to go to a see a doctor. DB says that there is no need for that.

Geno takes a tearful leave of the terneras and Melesio.

Gonzalo is very pleased with himself for having found out about DB's secret.

DB runs from Santos into Marisela's arms and tells him that she won't go see a doctor.

Marisela and Santos hatch a plan to get DB to a doctor. Marisela invites DB to go shopping for the baby with her in San Fernando.

Marisela, Genoveva and DB are walking along the street in San Fernando. Geno says that she can't believe this woman is the Doña. Marisela replies that DB is sick and defeated and she feels sorry for her. Geno says that she likes this DB better and suggests that maybe this is the real DB and the other was the sick one. Marisela says that she has never seen DB so happy. Geno says that her mother died when she was very young and she imagines that her mother would be like DB is now. She asks Marisela how DB was when Marisela was a child. Marisela says that DB was cold and heartless. She never kissed or hugged Marisela. While they watch DB buy a giant teddy bear from a street vendor, Marisela says that she always wanted a teddy bear but her mother never even bought her a toy. Her father was drunk all the time and the only one who showed her any affection was Juan Primito. DB gives the big teddy bear to Marisela and hugs her.

When Marisela suggests that she and DB visit Lucía in the hospital, DB gets agitated and runs away. Marisela and Genoveva search for her but with no success.

Antonio tells Gonzalo that his investigation could not find any connection between Sapo and the attack on El Miedo. Gonzalo says that he thought the accusation against Sapo was ridiculous and urges Gonzalo to drop the investigation. When Antonio mentions Santos' suspicions, Gonzalo says Santos has made accusations without any proof. He should allow the police to do their job.

Gonzalo casually asks Antonio if has known DB for a long time. He says that DB has been around for 20 years. Gonzalo asks Antonio to tell him about DB's past. After hearing the story, Gonzalo tells Antonio that DB's history is terrible. Antonio is called to the hospital. When he is gone, Gonzalo says that he has finally figured out the puzzle (rombecabeza, a puzzle, literally, a 'head breaker') of Sapo's relationship to DB.

Juan Primito tells Melquíades that DB has gone to San Fernando.

Melquíades confronts Santos and asks how he let DB go so far away and that she is in danger. He accuses Santos of abandoning DB because he wants Marisela. Santos says that he asked Melquíades to disclose who DB's enemy is but he refused. Melquíades says that DB did not want him to tell. Santos replies that if something happens because of Melquíades' foolish promise to DB, it will be Melquíades' fault.

Marisela and Genoveva can't find DB and they ask for Gonzalo's help. He alerts the police to be on the lookout for DB.

Fidel Castell shows up at Gonzalo's office and Gonzalo shows that he knows his past by calling him Sapo. Sapo is impactado.

Gonzalo tells Sapo that he knows all about Sapo's past as a rapist and murderer and that it is all written down.

Pajarote comes to see Genoveva with a pineapple but the other terneras tell him that she has left Progresso for good. They are scornful when he tells them that he is surprised that Geno left without telling him.

The doctor tells Don Encarnacion and Antonio that they have to do a C-section on Lucía right away. DE asks how that can be - Lucía is only six months pregnant. The doctor says that there is no choice. If they don't act now, both Lucía and the baby could die.

Gonzalo tells Sapo that if he gets so much as a scratch, Sapo will be destroyed. He tells Sapo that he doesn't care about Sapo's feud with DB. He is only interested in making money. He tells Sapo not to go after DB any more. Sapo replies that DB won't forget and will go after him.

Lucía begs the doctor not to operate. She knows that her baby is fully developed yet. The doctor says that if there was any other option, he would take it but the baby is in danger, too. Cecilia comes into Cecilia's room with the priest and Lucía asks him to stay

Marisela just misses seeing DB go into the building where Gonzalo's office is. Santos and Melquíades arrive and Marisela tells them that DB has disappeared.

DB is in Gonzalo outer office when Gonzalo and Sapo come into the room. DB is impactada.
