Heridas, Friday Sep 15

Squeaky admits to Erika that she thinks Juan is sooooo dreamy but they are too different. I have a hard time listening because Erika has the worst hair I’ve ever seen, it’s like layered bowl cuts. Just awful. Erika actually gives her good advice, tell Veronica to stuff it and just be with the guy if you like him.

Back to Miranda crying. Alejandro shows up and Tomasa lets him in. He goes to her and it’s like a Harlequin book cover the way they lie on the bed. She whines and he says something comforting and they start making out. Then out of nowhere a hand grabs Alejandro and pulls him off, it’s Cesar, who growls “get out of here you infeliz!” There is some really funny editing here. When Cesar grabs him they all stare at each other dramatically, then it skips right into the ensuing conversation. I believe the staredown was intended as an episode ending but all the editing put it five minutes into this show. The boys yell at each other. Cesar tells Miranda to come with him, he’ll keep her safe. Alejandro says me too! Cesar gives a long speech about why he’s so great and says “yeah and after what happened last night…….” Miranda stops him and says nothing happened last night! She looks at Alejandro and explains exactly how Cesar came to answer her phone, she left it in the living room, etc. She tells him she’s sorry about that. This officially is the first time someone just took the time to explain something to avoid a week of misunderstanding and running around. And of all people it was stupid Miranda. Alejandro is pleased and laughs, Cesar says what are you laughing at? Alejandro says “You, Cesar. YOU!” He laughs right in his face, it’s great.

Raul and Carola arrive at her place She paid bail and tells him not to worry about it, he’s like a brother. Raul tells her that everything will be ok and she says she hopes so.

Superslut is on the phone with Bertha filling her in, she can’t get to the medicine to change it because Dr. Juan never leaves it alone. Erika sneaks into the room and starts to listen to what slutty is saying. Superslut says Bertha’s name so Erika SHOULD know who she is talking to. Erika is walking up to her like she’s about to slip a wire around her neck and I hope she does. Rats. Superslut claims to have been talking to her mom, then leaves, leaving her phone sitting there. Dummy. Erika looks at the phone to see who was on the other end, helloooooo dumbass, she said “Bertha” while you were standing RIGHT THERE behind her. She finally finds Bertha’s name and is sooo surprised. Slutty had walked back in and demands her phone back. Erika and her godawful hair look worried. Slutty is a twig and Erika has some meat on her, she has nothing to be worried about, she could take her in a fight.

Fab and Juan, now BFF I guess, are talking to Gabino. Gabino says those guys will likely come back again. The new best pals decide to check up on the chocolate factory and Juan tells Gabino that nobody comes in or out, nobody. Fab gives him a pep talk about how well he defended the hacienda. Gabino says his grandparents, parents, and him were all born there, he would defend it with blood if necessary.

Alejandro tells Cesar he knows his game, Cesar plays dumb, “what do you mean?” After some more chest-bumping Cesar makes ready to take a swing at Alejandro and Miranda stops him. “Don’t make me lose the affection that I have for you.” “affection? That’s what you feel for me?” Miranda says nothing and Cesar does a pitiful lovesick look. He asks “what does that mean?” Alejandro says it means he should get his ass out of this house right now before he kicks it out. Tomasa begs Cesar to comply and leave. Cesar tells Miranda that they need to speak alone, there are STILL things he needs to tell her. He needs a new line, that one isn’t going to keep working. It works this time I guess, she promises to find him to talk. On his way out, he tells Alejandro “we’re not finished, you and me.” Alejandro says “just tell me where and when, I’ll be there.” I suspect 3:00, boys bathroom.

Rebeca visits Gonz in his office. He gives her a dirty look. He says she could have saved him but she chose to protect those other assholes. She makes excuses. They go back and forth about who could do what and la la la. She finally says she loves him. I don’t know in what way. He tells her that Miranda knows the truth about her mother. Rebeca says he can’t do anything against Fernanda now, he says how can you be so sure? She says she thinks that her protector is Alejandro Luque. Dramatic music, then Gonzalo throws his drink across the room in anger.

Alejandro tells Miranda the whole story of how he met Fernanda again at the clinic and everything that happened after that and why he couldn’t say anything. This episode is full of people finally just TELLING each other what’s going on instead of Three’s Company style misunderstandings. He finally tells her that she has to give Fernanda a chance to explain things to her. She is then upset about everything she found out about Gonzalo. She says “Who provoked all this? Who?” I think we all know who. I think they know too but for some reason let her continue to roam around as she pleases.

Fernanda has a green flashback of an argument with Bertha. Alejandro walks in with Miranda. Miranda sits down and calls her ‘mama.’ They cry and hug.

Gonz and Rebeca fight some more. He’s upset about Alejandro’s duplicity, obviously. He vows to fight. He vows vengeance while Rebeca whines and wiggles her moptop around. He finally tells her to leave so he can think. She tells him that Julio is at her house when he wants to come see him. He asks what Cesar and Julio are up to, she says please don’t ask me that. He starts to give her the faintest hint of a dirty look and she’s already blabbing that Cesar wants to open their own company and Julio accepted.

Fernanda and Miranda are all giggly and happy, they thank Alejandro for bringing them together. He leaves them alone. For some reason on his way out she explains again about last night and the cell phone. This second explanation would make me suspicious, but Alejandro doesn’t worry.

Back at the hacienda Superslut is threatening Erika to not say anything about her talking to Bertha. Renata comes in and slutty pretends to be consoling Erika, who is crying for real due to slutty having pulled her hair. Renata babbles and leaves to get food.

Miranda says “mama?” Fernanda says what? “Nothing – I just want to make sure I can pronounce that word – mama.” Fernanda starts talking and weeping, some story about when Miranda was a little girl. More crying from both of them. And some more crying. Sheesh.

Cesar whines and whines to his flunky about Miranda going with Alejandro and not him. They are out in the country, I think in the property neighboring the hacienda. Some farmhand comes up and tells him about how some guys are going to storm the hacienda, he hatches a plan to do something that will make him look better than Alejandro. I didn’t understand all the details. Something about distracting Luciano too, Cesar has three women coming out to work on Luciano – “Tres muy beunas.”

Lasagna is telling her mom on the phone what is happening at the hacienda, that she’s trying to call Alejandro but can’t reach him. Surprise, here he comes, into the restaurant where Daira is to meet her, she passes him the phone and Lasagna cries to him, he tells her to calm down and not worry. She tells him that it’s hard to get a cell signal, she thinks there must be ‘electrical storms’ nearby or something. That sounds about as logical as Doc Brown’s Flux Capacitor. He says he’ll be out there in the morning and hangs up. He tells Daira that he knows Raul’s whole family, it turns out. She just wants to know about Miranda, he tells her that she’s talking with her mother right now.

Aaaand she is. They talk about all the stuff we already know. Miranda says “do you still love him?” She says yes, through all these years. Yeah. Right. Whatever. Who would still love somebody after all that. Give me a break. Miranda says maybe they can be together again, he was never with another woman. Welll….. except Bertha. Fernanda knows this. Miranda says Bertha only took advantage of Gonz when he was drunk, he feels nothing for her. Why to people keep saying that, like it makes a difference? If you did the deed, you did it. Why does it matter if it ‘meant something’ or not? If I were cheated on I wouldn’t care about any of those details. If it happened, it happened. The end. Whatever. The women down some more tequila. Fernanda and Miranda agree that Bertha is responsible for everything bad that happened, between the two of them they will prove it.

Gabino is talking with Juan and Fab about what is going on. He feels guilty for helping Bertha way back when, when he hurt Miranda’s horse. That feels like a million years ago. And a million endless conversations ago. Gabino leaves with another guy, getting his gun out to check on stuff. Cesar rolls up to make trouble for sure. He plays nice, like he came to help. Fab stares him down. He says everythings fine, Cesar doesn’t need to be there. Juan is walking away and Cesar tries to toss the car keys to him, “you kid park my car.” Juan looks at the keys on the floor and says “park it yourself.” Cesar tries to go after him but Fab stops him. What a tool Cesar is.

Rebeca is begging Julio to not be mad, Gonz is like a brother to her so she had to go see him. They talk about a bunch of nothing. She’s happy that he is confident in Cesar. He hopes that his new company will show his sons that he is a good guy after all.

Cesar actually apologizes to Juan, who goes to check on Flor. Fab fills Cesar in on what is going on at the hacienda. Lasagna brings her fine self down the stairs to greet Cesar, she is happy to see him. I’m trying to remember what their history is but can’t remember. She tells Fab that she got Alejandro on the phone to tell him what’s going on, Cesar fumes. She excuses herself, she and Cesar are having sex with their eyes. I don’t remember what the deal is here, can somebody fill me in? She looks like she’s going to jump him right here. Cesar tells Fab he wants to work things out between them.

Fransisco and Amparito are in the church, they talk to Santiago about the money Francisco got and Santiago says something about not getting permission to take a leave of absence. Daira comes in and Francisco asks to speak to her privately and they head outside.

Luciano overhears Cesar’s flunky on the phone telling Daniel that SLI’s days are numbered. Flunky tries to talk his way out of what he said, Luciano says “tell me why the company’s days are numbered.”

Fernanda’s tequila bottle is still mostly full so they haven’t had too much to drink. A knock at the door, Fernanda goes to answer it. It’s Gonzalo. He wants to talk. She says go ahead but doesn’t let him in. He says that he knows that Alejandro is the person protecting her. Lots of dramatic music, then the bleah theme song. My wife loves it, along with all those similar love songs, but to me it is nothing special.

They show Cesar kissing Lasagna in the preview for the next show, nooo!!!

More "Fea" corrections, Because I Care

...actually more like "because I was in a hurry and therefore wasn't as careful as I should have been."

After re-watching the past week's episodes I had to go back and make some corrections/adjustments to the recaps (corrected stuff is in red). Most of them are trivial, but there are two things that require special notice:
  • I thought the Monte de Piedad (Mount of Mercy) was the same thing asthe Public Ministry because I misinterpreted something Sara and Juana said. They are not the same thing. (Margaret tried to explain that to me, but I still misunderstood.) The Public Ministry is some sort of legal bureau. This doesn't really affect the story much, but I don't like to create and propagate misinformation. Just in case someone was planning to pawn something at the Mexican Public Ministry, or sue someone through the Monte de Piedad... :-)
  • On Wednesday, when the lights go out in the exec lobby and then go back on, Celso or Fern (I forget which) says it was probably a power outage. This probably isn't important, but I'm mentioning it in case it was meant to establish that the building has faulty wiring or something.

La Fea Más Bella #104 9/15/06 Mostly Filler

I don't know if this happens to the other recappers or not, but there are some nights when I'm able to understand almost everything, and other nights when it all goes over my head. Last night was the latter. The good news (from a recapping standpoint, not an entertainment one) is that very little of importance seems to have happened.

I'll post what I have now and watch it again tomorrow - if I missed anything important, I'll post it then. But I'm skeptical. This episode was 90% filler.

The house-hunters

Lety is looking around in a nice house. Dad is inspecting things. The new vendedora (I think her name is Mathilde) corners Tomas and... and... kinda assaults him. She hauls him in for a painful-looking kiss. He pulls away (with difficulty) and tells her he can't cooperate because... because... [lightbulb over head] he and Lety are engaged!

Lety pulls Tomas aside and is furious. She would never ever marry him! He's angry and offended. He has to be her boyfriend for Conceptos, after all. She reluctantly agrees to go along with it.

Mathilde crushes RoboPop's hand again and congratulates him on the kids' engagement. Lety and Tomas privately explain the situation to him. He disapproves, but on seeing what Mathilde is like, he doesn't have a strong argument against the deception.

After this I think there is some discussion as to who will ride in Mathilde's car to the next house. Not sure about that. Anyway, the next house is so friggin' huge, the foyer looks more like a big bank lobby than a residence. There are stained glass windows with peoples' faces on them. It's 17 million pesos which is over 1.6 million dollars I think. Mathilde takes the camcorder and wants pictures of Lety and Tomas kissing on the stairs. They give each other hand-kisses (kiss their own fingertips, put their fingertips to each others' faces) and Mathilde announces into the camera, "Mr. and Mrs. Mora in their future house."

As they prepare to leave, Mathilde manages to plant a wet one on RoboPop. Tomas's phone rings. It's Fernando. Lety and Tomas look worried.

Back at Conceptos

Alicia, Juana, and the rest of the feas squabble about the missing red bag. Alicia says, among other things, that the bag's contents are "things she needs for parties." Juana asks what kinds of parties Alicia goes to. :)

Fern can hear the ruckus outside. Based on things Sara is saying, Fern wonders if perhaps Sara knows all about the letter. Fern is still holding the bag and hasn't looked in it yet.

Alicia stomps off to tell Lopez that Juana has stolen her bag. She tells him that bag is her existence. Lopez licks his chops (actually his fingers) in anticipation of slaughtering a fea. He hates the cuartel.

Fern is about to open the bag when Saimon shows up with a delivery. He hurriedly hides the bag, tossing it into the air and it hits a lamp on the way down. Saimon notices Fern's lampshade is off-kilter. Fernando explains that he adjusted the lampshade to direct the light onto his papers. Saimon leaves and Fern picks up the bag again. Lola busts in and he hides it again. She appeals to Fern to help Juana. He doesn't seem to want to be involved. All he can think about is getting everyone out of his office so he can look in the bag.

Out in the executive lobby, Lopez asks Juana where the bag is. She didn't take it, so she doesn't know. Alicia doesn't want to admit she's fixing to pawn her jewelry, so she will only say that its contents are very valuable. She and Lopez go into Fern's office (no one's been knocking, by the way) and Fern, flustered, calls Alicia "airhead" by accident. He tries to put a simple end to Juana's peril by asking Alicia if she saw the theft with her own eyes. She says she did!

Out in the lobby, Irma struggles to understand why Omar's specimens are such a hot property.

Everyone leaves Fern's office except Alicia. She is still talking about the bag's contents as being worth money, which upsets him, thinking she's hatching a blackmail scheme. He ushers her out and takes a moment to collect his thoughts. (Only a moment.) He starts to reach for the bag but on looking up, sees that the entire cuartel is now in front of his desk. PM asks why would Juana steal Omar's specimens? (Sara demonstrates with the invisible jar and sound effect.)

Fern agrees to help. (Anything to get them out of his office.) Alone at last, he opens the bag, looks inside, and sees...

Jars filled with Omar's lab samples!!!

Not really. (Psych!) He finds a jewelry box full of Alicia's jewelry. He puts it back in the bag and hides the bag behind his back. Meanwhile, Lopez presents Juana with her dismissal. Al is happy about this but still wants her stuff back. Fern (hiding the bag) says that he's the president, and Juana won't be fired. Lopez says the policy is clear. Fern sends Lopez to his office.

Alicia is angry. FINALLY she tells everyone that her jewelry is in that bag.

Fern sneakily tries to return the bag to Alicia's desk. She catches him and wants to know how he has her bag. So does Lopez. She still thinks Juana was involved somehow, but Fern defends her. I miss exactly how he manages to explain things to everyone's satisfaction, but the crisis ends.

Except Sara wants to know what happened to Omar's lab specimens. This confuses Alicia, who never heard about that. Sara also asks about Alicia's interest in the Public Ministry. Did she steal those jewels?

Alicia unhappily explains that "MP" was Monte de Piedad, not Public Ministry. The jewels are hers and she's going to pawn them.

Fern calls Omar to tell him that Alicia's bag contained nothing but her own jewelry. Fern yells at Omar for his stupid, trouble-making bag and letter. Omar reminds Fern to pick up some sort of gift for Lety. There's more rehashing - apparently more rehashing than even Omar can take, because he hangs up on Fern. (Actually Omar is in a hurry, there's going to be a FIFA meeting.)

Marcia is also in a hurry on her way to the same meeting, so when Alicia calls her to tell her tale of woe, Marcia again puts her off.

Lola, Sara, and Paula Maria start a "fund" for Alicia. They accost people (coworkers and clients) in the main lobby and ask them for their spare change. They have a conversation with Luigi that I don't get.

Fern is getting tired of waiting for Lety. He goes into her office (which is now liberally festooned with Moty cartoon-doggie stuff) and calls her house. Mom remembers that Lety's errand is a secret, so she just tells Fern that she's out with Tomas and tells Fern to call them on Tomas's mobile phone.

Fern freaks out. Last night she rejected him, and this morning she's out with Tomas??

Barrera de Amor summary: September 15

I was sure Jacinta was going to wake up and find Maite in her bedroom, but no! Maite took the drugs out of the drawer (they'd been hidden under a prayerbook) and slipped away successfully. However, as all the windows and doors were locked, she couldn't escape the hacienda.

Jacinta woke up, discovered the empty drawer, got her shotgun, and circled the house hoping to kill Maite. The chauffeur, Artemio, came to our heroine's rescue; he let her out, saying: "I've seen a lot around here over the years - I'm on your side - we should talk."

Maite hurried back to the convent, gave the drugs to Unibrow to be analyzed, and told him they have a grandson together. He emotes in a muffled monotone. Tears and kisses in closeup, I will say no more.

Nicolas is babbling fearfully after receiving a call from the Other World (Gustavo, promising payback). His wife Cayetano thinks the call was from one of his many girlfriends.

He hears sounds in the house, gets his gun, and bursts into Manola's room, where he finds her in bed with Federico. Cayetano follows and there is a shouting party. Rodrigo shows up and bangs on the door asking what's going on. They all say, Oh nothing, and get rid of him so they can continue their less-than-amicable discussion.

"How long has this been going on?" Cayetano asks indignantly. Federico: "A long time, in fact I'm Rodrigo's father." After more shouting the conclusion is: Nicolas and Cayetano raised their daughter to be frivolous, cold, calculating, and unscrupulous. Then they "sold" her to Gustavo who had enough money to keep all of them in luxury. Everybody is to blame.

Nicolas points out to Cayetano that their own marriage, too, was one of convenience and no love. They shuffle off to fight more in their own room.

Then Federico and Manola have sex and Manola thought-bubbles: "Federico may be a Vallodolid, but he has no class and I'd never marry him. Oh, where oh where is Unibrow?" Yes, that's what she said.

Victor and Maite de-brief together. When she hears Andres is in Aguascalientes she wants to go immediately to his hotel and tell him he has a son, but Victor points out Andres is with Bon-bon and tomorrow would be better.

Juanita is amazed to hear, from Unibrow on his return to Las Barricas, that her school chums Veronica and Valeria are both in town. She will find a way to talk to Valeria. She and her dad think Unibrow should go find Andres, tell him about Pedrito, and reconcile. Unibrow says shut up.

Federico is sure a drug refill can be procured in a couple days. Jacinta: "Without the drugs I can't control Valeria, she's so stubborn. When she's drugged, she's weak and can't fight me... Maybe your mother Remedios took my stash!" Federico tells her he got Octavio fired and mired in scandal. Jacinta smiles approvingly: "The paths of God are infinite in number. You, too, have become an instrument of Our Lord and will sit with him in heaven."

Heridas de Amor, Thursday, September 14

Well, finally something happened on this novela. Santiago is asking Andrea about her supposedly late husband. She says at first everything was good but then he did bad things… Santiago asks why she thought he was dead. Andrea is confused but the mysterious men who wanted the mysterious papers said that they would kill him. Pamela arrives. Santiago is glad she is there. He has someone to present to them – in walks Leonardo.

Miranda tells Gonzo that maybe he should reintroduce himself to her because the Gonzalo San Llorente that she knew doesn’t exist anymore. Gonzo says he knows she is hurting but she’ll get over it. Miranda asks how she can get over knowing that her father isn’t what he appears and knowing how he persecuted her mother. ‘She deserves it’ says Gonzo. ‘She destroyed all of us.’ ‘You destroyed us too with your lies,’ responds Miranda. Listening outside the door, Tomasa thinks that Miranda still doesn’t know everything.

A happy reunion for Andrea, Pamela and Leonardo. Andrea keeps saying, ‘Is it really you, Leonardo?’ Pamela asks where he has been and why did he disappear. Leo says that he will explain everything eventually. Santiago thanks God for this happy event.

Al is having a drink with Luciano in a bar. He wants Luciano to cozy up to Cesar and find out what he’s up to. Luciano doesn’t like Cesar but he’ll do it. Al explains to Luciano how Cesar has taken advantage of his and Miranda’s falling out to cozy up to her and his next step is to get control of the reserved stock. Al believes that Cesar really hates Gonzo and all his scheming is part of a plan to bring down SLI.

A bunch of workers in spotless white shirts and cowboy hats are listlessly brandishing machetes and shouting by the gates of the hacienda. Holding the fort are Gabino and a few others, armed with a pistol. Juan, Squeaky and Erika are chatting on the lawn about their house cleaning experiencesw when Veronica and Lasagna come up to say that men with machetes are going to attack the hacienda. Juan takes charge and sends the women to the house with instructions not to alarm Flor. Squeaky is impressed with his take-charge attitude.

Miranda wants to know who was the man that Gonzo killed. What did he and Bertha do with the body? Gonzo replies that he doesn’t have to answer to anyone including her. The topic is closed. ‘If you think my actions are so despicable, call the police and denounce me,’ he says and leaves. Miranda dissolves into tears yet again.

Fab breaks out the weaponry (two pistols) to defend the hacienda. Juan isn’t sure he can fire a gun at someone. They await the attack with grim resolve. [Can’t they call the police or something?]

Amparo and Ramon return from Sanson’s place. Amparo explains how as children Sanson and Gordo came to their house for food because their father was a drunk and the mother disappeared for weeks at a time. Raul sneaks into the house and listens to their conversation. Amparo can’t believe that Sanson would treat her like he did. Ramon says that since Raul hasn’t gone back with the gang, there isn’t any problem. Raul leaves. Amparo says that if anything happens to the boys, she will die.

Miranda is lying on her bed fingering her rosary bead and cell phone and crying. She realizes that she needs Al, his support, his words, his voice, the strength of his arms… his love. At the bar, Al is fondling his phone too and thinking about Miranda. He has a green memory of when Pamela got Miranda to admit that she loved him. He calls. Miranda answers and can’t speak because she is crying so much. Alarmed, Al tells Luciano that they have to go find her.

At the hacienda, all the womenfolk are barricaded in Flor’s bedroom. They don’t seem to have followed Juan’s instructions not to alarm Flor. Veronica wonders if they’ll be raped. Someone finally suggests calling the police but too late – the phone line is dead. There isn’t any cell signal either [have the workers knocked down the cell tower with their machetes?] Fab comes in and tells him that the workers have taken the machinery from the chocolate factory and the harvesting tools. He tells them nothing will happen to them.

Raul goes to police to denounce Sanson’s gang to protect his family. He has to confess that he participated in the robbery at the bar. That is all the policeman needs to hear. He isn’t interested in the gang, only in the robber he has right now.

Cesar gets a call from Bertha. She is still abroad. He tells her that he is on the point of succeeding in his plan except that Al is interfering.

Back at the hacienda, the tension is unendurable. The workers are burning down the chocolate factory or something. Shots are heard. Flor faints.

Gonzo goes to his office and Ramon comes in. It becomes clear that Cesar was not acting for Gonzo and knows nothing about Cesar’s instructions to Ramon to use Amparo to get close to Amparo. Gonzo orders Ramon to use all his efforts to find out who Fernanda’s protector is.

The rioting workers seem to lose interest in sacking the hacienda and drift off. I’m not sure why.

Francisco comes home to Amparo. He is happy. He ran into the boss of his old factory and told him off about broken promises. The guy gave him a check for his many years of service. What are they going to do with the money? Amparo suggests that Ramon could handle it.

Back at the police station, Raul has to make bail. Carola arrives and asks what Raul is doing there. While the policeman listens behind her, Raul tells her that he came voluntarily and informed on Sanson because he threatened Amparo and his family. Carola is unimpressed with his plan. She offers to pay his bail but now the policeman wants Carola to tell them what she knows about all this.

Back at the hacienda, Juan and Fab are attending to Flor. She asks Juan to use the familiar ‘tu’ with her. The maid arrives to say that the rioters have dispersed and Gabino is waiting for Fab and Juan at the gate. The men leave ordering the women to stay in the room and stay away from the windows. The TiVo ended at the point when Erika takes Squeaky aside and says it seems like she likes Juan. Squeaky denies it.

La Fea Más Bella #103 9/14/06 Bait-and-Switch

It's night. Fern is at home. The phone rings. "Lety?" he answers, expecting her to apologize or explain about rejecting him earlier.

But it's Marcia. She wants to know why he'd expect to hear from Lety at home at this hour. He replies "you've been talking to Alicia, haven't you." Marcia says she did indeed speak to Alicia and that she said that he had seemed nervous. She tells him to use their time apart to think hard about whether he truly wants to get married. He tells her that he is thinking at home, alone. "You wouldn't believe how pensive I am, Marcia."

Omar starts to snore. His seatmate pushes him away and he flops into the aisle, babbling about the red bag. Marcia is too lost in thought to notice.

While Fernando continues to think hard, Lety writes a diary entry. She is wearing new pajamas bearing the logo of a dog named Moty. Or Mody. I should have written it down. I only mention it because it matches the doggy on her new pocketbook I'll mention later. (I really like the way her kiddie accessories complement her old-lady clothes. It takes a lot of "inner beauty" to pull that off. More than any human can possess, I think...) She writes some more about the mixed feelings she has about helping Fern cheat on his fiancee, etc. On the one hand, she's the happiest woman on earth. On the other hand, how miserable it will be for Marcia to lose him. He is the light in her life, makes her feel like a princess, avenges the bet, etc. She worries about the wedding.

As always, this is superimposed over images of Fern being pensive. He chuckles to himself, "I said 'Lety' to Marcia."

That night, Fern dreams that Ariel has taken over the president's office. He is sitting in Fern's chair. He throws away Fern's nameplate and zaps Fern with lightning bolts from his hands. (It's cool to see this actor having some fun.) He pompously announces, "You gave the company to that ugly chick and now it's getting seized. We have proof." He snaps his fingers. (I notice he's wearing a wedding ring; is Ariel married or did the actor just forget to take his ring off?) Fern's parents appear with the red bag. They say they're going to tell Lety everything.

The next morning, Lety leaves a message with PM to tell Fern that she'll be in late. She has some things to do. After she hangs up, she notices a strange smell...

PM is frustrated that Lety won't tell her what's going on. Saimon dances into the lobby and asks PM if she's told Jr. about their relationship yet. The answer is no, and she doesn't plan to do it soon.

Meanwhile, Omar is in his hotel room, practicing some German phrases. He calls Fern at home (running late due to nightmares) and greets him in German that's so badly pronounced that I have to read the Spanish captions to figure out what he's saying. Fern answers, "What - who is this?" in English. Naturally, Omar wants to know if he's found the bag yet. Fern sarcastically answers Nein, it's not here (at his house). Fern tells Omar that Lety turned him down last night. This worries Omar. He suggests that perhaps Lety has read The Letter. Fern says he doubts it, but the idea clearly bothers him.

Tomas has put on his dad's suit, another short fat necktie (is there a name for this style of neckwear? maybe a fan club?), and way too much cologne in anticipation of seeing Dora the Vendedora again. (BTW, that was a José José song they were listening to on the radio last night - special thanks to "modernfea" for pointing that out.) Lety laughs at him and says she can't tell whether he's going to a wedding or a funeral. RoboPop and Mom come down and complain about the smell too. Tomas looks offended. Lety says the carnation is an especially bad touch. Tomas says she shouldn't be so critical considering that green outfit and screwy hairdo she wore a few weeks ago. Anyway, he says, he's stylish.

As Tomas and RoboPop leave the house, Lety confides to her mother that she doesn't like this errand she's doing for the Mendiolas. I notice that Lety has a new pocketbook - it's red and has the same dog on it that was on her PJs. Wierd. I wonder if we missed out on another blatant advertising scene. Like maybe when the button fell off of her old pink pocketbook she had to get a new one. Never mind; it's not important.

On their way to the house, Tomas wants to stop and buy flowers. Lety is disgusted and RoboPop thinks they won't have time. He drives slowly, with a line of cars honking behind him. Lety suggests slightly more speed.

Tomas is all wound up as they approach a house with a nice garden. He babbles about Alicia for some reason as they walk through the door. Instead of a cute young thing in a cocktail dress, they encounter a severe-looking older woman with a deep voice. She grabs RoboPop's hand and crushes it, greeting him as Tomas Mora. He protests that she's hurting him. When she discovers that he's not Tomas, she crushes it again and apologizes. He struggles to extricate himself (with Lety's help) and says he needs to go to the car.

Tomas asks where Dora is. This new woman says Dora couldn't make it today, but she'll be happy to help him out instead - and she knows of a place he can buy for his company that has ten floors. Tomas looks like he's in over his head. :-) She takes them to look at several pricey homes and keeps getting in front of the camera (and at one point we are treated to the kazoo music again). She gropes both RoboPop and Tomas and suggests Tomas should film her in a Jacuzzi.

Lety takes off to explore the house on her own while Tomas and RoboPop check out the bathrooms. Lety daydreams about Marcia and Fern starting their new life together in one of these homes. She imagines that he carries Marcia into the bedroom in her wedding gown, and they kiss and talk about how Lety was never any threat to their happiness. Marcia says, "that poor girl is so ugly." "Horrible, eh?" Fern agrees. Tomas's yelling snaps Lety out of this daymare. Her shadow says, "Lety, stop thinking about stupid things." Lety repeats it, then tells herself she wants these stupid things. She giggles. (Maybe Lety's losing her marbles. Who could blame her?)

Tomas wants to leave. The new real estate agent is driving him crazy. She keeps telling him to film her.

Alicia gets to Conceptos (with her jewelry in the red bag) and bids her car a warm farewell. (Not sure if this is just for the day, or for life.) She says, "No, my love. We will never separate. We were born apart - you in Germany and I in Mexico - but we are twins at heart. We will be together forever, my love. Nothing and no one will separate us." She blows it a kiss.

At her desk, she calls for the number of Monte de Piedad (Mount of Mercy). The feas overhear only "MP" and think she's called for the Public Ministry instead - they are intrigued. Sara (wearing a really cute blouse) and Juana spar in the bathroom for no clear reason other than that it's a "great way to start the day."

Factoid #1 (and thanks to Margaret for explaining this): You (if you are Mexican) can hock your stuff at the Monte de Piedad. I don't know if you get a better deal with them than at a regular pawnshop.
Factoid #2: A quick web search reveals that Monte de Piedad was founded by a man named Riva Palacios. It doesn't say if he was related to the fictitious celebrity Cristina Rivapalacios or not. :-)

Fern gets to work and PM gives him Lety's message. Lety's unexplained tardiness worries Fern further. PM has her own theory: maybe Lety is changing her "look" again. They agree that the incident with the green clothes was not a success. Fern looks ill as he gets on the elevator, wondering what Lety might be doing.

Up in the executive lobby, Alicia is yelling at Juana for cleaning her desk. Fernando walks in and sees the red bag. She is hugging it possessively while he stares longingly. He chides the feas for gabbing at their desks and not working and retreats into his office. The feas speculate as to why Alicia is calling the Public Ministry and why Fern gave her such a strange look.

Fern rifles through his things, looking for Omar's phone number in Germany. He spies his briefcase on the shelf (I guess he doesn't take it home) and checks in there. He takes out several items, including The Letter, which is in an unmarked envelope. Since it's not what he's looking for, he continues to ignore it, while it quietly radiates malevolence (though I bet if he held it to his ear he could hear it ticking). He finds the number and calls Omar to say that Alicia has the red bag. Omar reminds him how dangerous this is and also tells Fern he wants to talk to Luigi.

Fern uses this excuse to chat with Alicia, who is still clutching the bag to her ample bosom. He kisses her on the head and makes inane small talk with her while poking at the bag. He also mentions that Marcia called him from the plane last night. :-) Then he asks Alicia to tell Luigi that Omar has arrived in Germany. She reaches for the phone, but he says no, you know how sensitive Luigi is, go tell him in person! Alicia says okay, but takes the bag with her. He innocently asks why doesn't she leave the bag at her desk. She tells him it contains her whole future and will help her pay her bills. The feas gape. So does Fern - maybe she's planning to blackmail him!

The feas wonder why Alicia is holding the bag of Omar's lab samples so closely, and if she's really that much in love with Omar. Juana says something cryptic about jewels in the crown.

Fern follows Alicia, trying to get that bag. She goes to the stockroom, and when the men there tell her that Luigi's probably in Editing, Alicia tells them to clean up the place to keep the rats away. She finds Luigi - he's editing a video of his dog and complains about the interruption (and also complains that Alicia has referred to his best friend as a dog, when Alicia is the real dog).

Fern is crawling around on the floor trying to get the bag while Alicia and Luigi argue about the dog's haircut. The dog tries to play with Fern on the floor. Fern can't get to the bag and crawls out of the room, running right into Irma's legs. He tells her he was inspecting the corners for dust and found three bedbugs (or some similar biting insect). He tells her to clean it up.

Alicia says something to Luigi about eating beans and making an ugly smell. (I believe this may have been an adlib because of the silly grin on his face.) She tells him about Omar. He asks Irma to get Omar on the phone, and Alicia leaves. Turning his attention back to the video, Luigi reassures his dog that she's more professional than most of his models. (Doesn't he have a jewelry ad to do?)

Alicia goes to the bathroom, where Juana is cleaning up. Alicia puts the bag on top of the lockers and goes into a stall to change the air in her head. Juana leaves and Fern sneaks in. He takes the bag (which looks practically empty; one wonders why she needs such a big bag for such small treasures) and brings it to his office, hiding it under his jacket. The feas are miffed or concerned that he didn't chide them again for gossiping.

Alicia finishes her sanitary activities and discovers that the bag is missing. She blames Juana.

Barrera de Amor summary: September 14

Most of this episode is a rehash so to avoid repetition I will summarize the backstory, once and for all, for people who missed it the first time... And now ...
  • Octavio is taken to the dean's office and faces the two bouncing undergrads - one who accuses him of trying to trade sexual favors for a better grade and the other who claims to have witnessed said discussion. The dean believes them and fires Octavio. Federico congratulates the girls on a job well done and gives them cash. The "witness" feels a bit of remorse but not much.

  • Unibrow listens as Theodoro tells him: (a) Federico is as much to blame for everything as Jacinta; (b) Theo now suspects Jacinta is responsible for the death-by-burning-building of Theo's wife Martina and Maite's aunt Griselda. Unibrow's vengeance plan has now progressed to - accumulating information about the Jacinta's finances. That's pretty gripping.

  • In a hotel, Veronica and Victor meet Andres with the Bonbon on his arm. He describes her as his "good friend." Victor remarks later that Andres doesn't look very happy.

Veronica can't understand why Maite is living with the nuns and is not at the hotel. "What aren't you telling me, dad?"

She understands even less well when she and Victor arrive at the convent and Maite isn't there. The nuns have been wondering where she is, and so has Unibrow. All knit their brows. "Maybe she's gone to see Valeria, who is still sick." "Maybe she is checking for proof that Jacinta is drugging Valeria!" A flash of Vera the Perra is seen: "Valeria, Valeria, Valeria, everybody always loves Valeria best. Why isn't mom here for ME?"

  • Remedios and Maite have indeed gone down the tunnel and into the hacienda. Remedios intends to distract Jacinta; she barges into her room just as Jacinta has drugged the tea and dropped the poison-wrapper into the trash. They have one of those needling, bitching shouting matches of yore.

Maite sneaks into Valeria's closet again and watches Valeria coo to Pedrito (whose presence had been begged and wheedled out of Cleo) and call him "hijito." "My grandson!" Maite thought-bubbles, then she has to watch as Jacinta barges in, yells at Valeria for being with the baby, makes Cleo take him away, and then forces Valeria to drink the poisoned tea, just as she forced Maite to drink it two decades ago.

I don't know how Cleotilde, Jacinta's maid, can still be saying "I believe you are the most pious, charitable woman I have ever known" after listening to Jacinta say (a) "That snotnose baby is nothing special, he's probably the product of sin, who knows what blood runs in his veins" and (b) "I will kill Maite if she comes back. If she comes in here, she will never leave alive." The chauffeur Artemio, having full knowledge of the poisonings past and present - due to his eavesdropping last night - stays silent.

  • On the way out, Maite sneaks into Jacinta's boudoir past said dozing dragon, starts to open the nightstand, but then sees the emptied poison packet in the trash. She picks it up and stands there, staring, instead of shoving it in her pocket and splitting. I'm sure tomorrow night Jacinta will wake up and see her still standing there like a dummy.

  • The phone rings in the night. Nicolas picks it up - it is Gustavo! "Did you forget my voice so soon? I just called to say I will be putting things in their place - you and Manola won't escape the vengeance of a dead man!"

Barrera de Amor: the early years. (Backstory)

It appears the characters in Barrera are going to keep sharing the information below with each other over and over until the show ends. To keep from having to type it over and over, here it is all in one place. I'm doing this from memory and I never paid much attention, so corrections are welcome. Jean helped me with some of this, thanks Jean!

Forty-some years ago, Pedro Vallodolid, a basically good rich dude, was forced to marry Jacinta (she was a nobody and her brother is Sergio). He was in love with Remedios, a humble girl. The night he was going to go off with Remedios, Jacinta sicced a big bull on him and he was trampled to death.

Remedios gave birth to Federico, Pedro's illegitimate son. Jacinta gave birth to Adolfo, Pedro's legitimate son. Remedios cut a Faustian bargain with Jacinta - she and Federico would live at the hacienda with Jacinta and Adolfo - and Federico would eventually get half the estate - but nobody would know about this little deal. It turned out rotten for Remedios, who was treated like a servant and lost the affections of her own son, who turned out completely evil and has been for many years an equal partner in crime with Jacinta.

Recently Remedios married Octavio, a nice professor, and they half-heartedly tried to convince Federico that Octavio was his dad. This hasn't gone well. Federico despises him.

Also forty-some years ago, Eloisa and Jose Maldonado had a thing. And so Eloisa had Maite. There was some misunderstanding and they never saw each other again and then Eloisa died and Maite was raised by her aunt Griselda. Maite never knew she had a rich wine-selling father; Jose now knows she's his daughter, but she doesn't. None of the Maldonado siblings married, they all live together and now Sergio (Jacinta's brother, who knows quite a few secrets) lives with them too.

Adolfo (son of Pedro Valladolid and Jacinta) lusted after Maite, who only had eyes for Unibrow (I know, I know). Adolfo raped Maite and so Unibrow pummelled him and was thrown in jail - Jacinta planned to keep him there forever.

Adolfo then blackmailed Maite into marrying him - it was the price of Unibrow's freedom. Unibrow felt thrown over, not knowing about the blackmail. Due to being raped, Maite had a baby, Valeria.

Jacinta was hot to raise Valeria as a Valladolid, and wanted to get Maite out of the way. She got a bent doctor to give her poison powders which she dumped in Maite's tea. Maite got nauseated, couldn't care for her baby, dropped her down the stairs, etc.

Then one day Federico whispered to Maite: Now's your chance to get away - Unibrow wants you to take your baby and meet him at the 8:00 train. So she left - but Unibrow (who knew nothing about this) had left on the 7:00 train. They didn't see each other again for many years. She was discredited; driven from the hacienda, she took refuge with her friend Magdalena who was a hooker in Elvira's house of ill-repute. Maite's picture got in the paper with the hookers. This is what Jacinta is now using to prove to Valeria that her mom was a mujerzuela.

Gustavo was a rich, older neighbor. He married young Manola, who had been cavorting with evil young Federico and never stopped (and is still doing so), and in fact Manola had a son by Federico - Rodrigo - who was raised as Gustavo's son, and used to be evil, but is now rehabilitated. Federico knows he's Rodrigo's dad, but Rodrigo doesn't. Gustavo knows Rodrigo is not his "natural" son but loves him anyway.

Manola threw Gustavo over a balcony and he was grievously wounded but survived. She didn't manage to finish killing him before he escaped; he is now living in Maite's apartment plotting vengeance. Nicolas is Manola's father and his complicity in her schemes extended to murdering Omar, Gustavo's attendant. Now Nicolas washes his hands a lot but they always look bloody to him...

Veronica is the (illegitimate) daughter of Adolfo and Magdalena the good-hearted whore. She, therefore, is also a Vallodolid, but she doesn't know it. She witnessed her mother's murder as a toddler and due to the shock has two secret selves - Vera (the bad, loud one) and Violetta (the sweet, submissive one), corresponding to her favorite dolls. She was raised by Maite and Victor, who lived together as friends until Victor found his true love Guillermo.

Veronica currently resides in the loony bin, where Doctor Monica has not figured out yet how to cure her.

Unibrow was a veterinarian. He had two sons by his first dead wife - Andres and Daniel. In their young years Maite was like their mom. After Maite married Adolfo, Unibrow married Nuria, a very nice woman who deserved better. Nuria raised his sons (while he was moping over Maite) and then got brain cancer and then Manola killed her, so Nuria (pregnant at the time) became Unibrow's second dead wife. Jean tells me Manola also killed Nuria's parents.

Now Andres has become a bullfighter, which Unibrow forbade for a stupid reason, so they are estranged. Andres loved Valeria, married her in secret, then they were parted due to Jacinta's machinations (in which Rodrigo participated). She went off to a convent and bore little Pedrito. Andres thinks Valeria's now a nun (she isn't) and doesn't know she bore him a son (little Pedrito) who is now installed at Jacinta's hacienda as a foundling (because Valeria didn't have the nerve to admit Pedrito is her son and, therefore, also a Vallodolid). Jacinta tried to murder Pedrito and may try again.

Andres' brother Daniel married Juanita (daughter of Theodoro and Martina) and got her pregnant with little Daniel. Then big Daniel died of a heart condition while trying to make peace between Unibrow and Andres. Unibrow, who went into the wine business with the Maldonados, took a job overseas and disappeared. He recently came back rich, bought Las Barricas, a nice place in Aguascaleintes, and his daughter-in-law (the widowed Juanita) and baby Daniel now live with him.

Besides killing her own husband by having him trampled by a bull, Jacinta also killed Maite's aunt Griselda and Teodoro's wife Martina when they discovered her poison-tea scheme - she burned them up in Martina's house. Then she killed the Padre to whom she confessed her murders (by letting him die on the floor when his medicine was within reach). Federico killed Adolfo, his half-brother, but nobody knows that.

Before getting roasted Griselda wrote a letter to Unibrow explaining how Maite sacrificed herself for him, but Manola and Federico intercepted it. It came into Unibrow's hands only recently, leading to a rapprochement between him and his one true love, and they are now trying to turn the tables on their enemies.

Jean says: "Let's compare murderers on this novela:

Federico - 1 (Adolfo)

Nicolas - 1 (Omar)

Rafael - 2 (Magdalena & Jacaranda's husband)

Manola - 3 1/2 (Nuria, Nuria's parents - she cut the gas line on Nuria's car - and Nuria's unborn child) plus 1 attempted (Gustavo)

Jacinta - 4 (Pedro, priest, Griselda, Martina) plus 1 attempted (baby Pedro)"

Finally! A date for the start of "Mundo de Fieras"

Tonight the date for the first episode of "Mundo de Fieras" was announced - Tuesday, October 3.

Labels:

Cast of characters: the stars of "Mundo de Fieras" with pictures

Mostly translated from the Esmas site, which portentously reports: "Everyone will suffer." Some additions.

Note that three of these women have the exact same hairdo. This may make it hard to keep them straight. Also, sadly, at least two of the characters have accented letters in their names, which we recappers do not appreciate.

You may want to look back on the initial recap, which has more information about the back-story and about the characters' relationships to each other.

César Évora is Gabriel, an honest man who lives tormented by his twin brother's hatred and the sickening jealousies of his wife Joselyn. His children by his first wife are Rogelio and Paulina. Actually, Paulina was adopted but doesn't know it.

His son with Joselyn is Luisito, whose legs were damaged in the car accident (caused by Gabriel, who was driving) which caused Joselyn to miscarry.

Joselyn, played by Edith González, is beautiful and ambitious; her emotional blackmail and her unfounded jealousies are destroying her marriage. Karen is her daughter by her first husband. Her father is not her mother's husband Clemente, but Federico, husband of Otilia.

In his double role, César also plays Demián, a cruel and aggressive man who hates his brother.

Gaby Espino plays Mariángela, a beautiful, generous and good woman who is victim of jealousies and abuse, but is not afraid to defend herself when she's right. Her mother, who has Alzheimer's, is Aurora. She is the illegitimate daughter of Clemente (Clemente is husband of Miriam).

Helena Rojo is Miriam, a woman with a dark past: calculating, greedy, tyrannical and totally without scruples. She is Joselyn's mother and wife to Clemente. She hates her husband's illegitimate daughter Mariángela. She is the mother of Leonardo, she abandoned him outside a church when he was a baby and Candelaria took him in.

Leonardo, adopted son of Candelaria (his actual mother is Miriam), is an intelligent, hard-working fellow who helps anyone in need. Ernesto Laguardia plays this good-hearted young man whose wife Viviana died in his arms at the altar just as they married! Elsa is his sister and she is dating the murderer "El Chacal."

Candelaria is a kindly, sympathetic, humble woman who always has good advice or a word of comfort for young people.

Laura Flores is Regina, a submissive, moral, and faithful woman who nevertheless suffers disdain and violence because of her husband Demián's jealousies. Juan Cristobal is the son of Demian and Regina.

Michelle Vieth is a "fiera" (wild beast) as Karen, a capricious, pampered, jealous girl who hates her step-sister Paulina and doesn't want her to be happy.

Karen is Joselyn's daughter by a previous marriage to Edgar, brother of Dolores.

Sara Maldonado is Paulina, a romantic girl without malice who loves Juan Cristóbal, the son of her father's worst enemy. She suffers to defend her love.

She is Gabriel's daughter by his first, dead wife. Rogelio is Paulina's mean, bad brother who is married to Diana.

Juan Cristóbal is played by Sebastián Rulli, is madly and devotedly in love with Paulina. He will struggle against the emnity of the families in order to be happy with her. He is the story's hunk.

Dolores is the sister of Joselyn's dead first husband Edgar. Dolores has been in jail, and is now out, and masquerading as a nun, and trying to find out who murdered her brother.

La Fea Más Bella #102 9/13/06 La Bolsa Roja

Ralph and Ed panic

(Ralph and Ed, from the Honeymooners, are the male equivalent of Lucy and Ethel. Just in case that wasn't obvious.)

On the phone in the plane, Omar tells Fern that if anyone else finds that bag, it will be the end of the world as they know it. He yells, "look for it! Find it!" The people on the plane give him dirty looks and a flight attendant asks him to keep his voice down, yet Marcia stays asleep.

In her office, Lety hears Fern on the phone with Omar, saying he hasn't seen any red bag.

Fern asks Sara about the red bag. Sara plays dumb but still asks him what was in the bag. To discourage snooping, he says they were lab specimens. (Lola listens.) He whispers so that Sara has to move in close. He pantomimes holding a jar. He twists off the lid and blows in Sara's face with a little sound effect. Sara recoils in shock and holds her nose.

Fern tells Sara and onlookers Lola, Juana, and Martha not to talk about this, just let him know if they find the bag. He does the invisible jar thing again and Sara recoils again. He waves it at Lola, who holds her nose. He shoves it at Juana and Martha, who make faces and fan the air around themselves.

He asks Lety, who is getting ready to leave, if she has seen a red bag. She says no, and asks if it's important. He says yes, it's a matter of life or death. She asks what's in it. He stalls, then says it's very personal, very delicate/sensitive/embarrassing. He has some trouble with this word (puduroso) and says "powerful" (poderoso) instead. She giggles.

He offers her a ride home or to take her out, but she says no. (She's thinking about his parents' request to go house-hunting.)

It's late and the feas want to go home. Martha says she's hungry. Alicia shows up and says nobody can leave until Fern leaves. They say now, actually, you're his secretary and we're not, so we can leave and you can't, ha-ha.

Lety passes through on her way out. Sara and Lety discuss the bag again. Sara tells her about the lab samples and shows her the invisible jar. She opens it, but the trick doesn't work on Lety. Confused, Sara takes a whiff and is grossed out. :-) They giggle that it's strange to put such things in a red gift bag. Lety leaves.

Fern and Omar talk some more. Fern tells him about his clever explanation of what was in the bag. Omar is not amused that the ladies of Conceptos are now thinking about a jar of his poo. He yells, "this is not funny - you have to find it!" Marcia stirs momentarily, but Omar assures her that all is okay and she goes back to sleep.

Fern leaves his office to look in Omar's office again. Alicia nabs him and asks for some money. He says no and tells her to go home. He tosses Omar's office and finally gives up.

As he is passing through the executive lobby back to his desk, the lights go out. Unaware of each other's presence, he and Celso each sneak through the darkness, looking for the noisy intruder. Predictably, they circle around backwards until they collide. The (minimal) excitement is punched up unsuccessfully with that silly kazoo music.

The lights go back on and they decide there was probably a power outage. Fern asks Celso if he has seen a red bag. Celso flashes back to the one and only "red bag" he remembers - a certain lady in red - Fern dressed in a red showgirl outfit as a result of losing a bet with Luigi a few months ago. Fern says no, a red paper bag. Celso says no, he hasn't seen it - was it important? Fern replies sarcastically, everyone keeps asking him if it's important, he's searched everywhere and asked everyone about it, but no, it's not important.

Sheesh! What a grouch!

Tomas & Lety look for a house

RoboPop and Tomas are waiting impatiently for Lety to get home so they can eat. Lety arrives and announces that she's not hungry. She confides to Mom that she's stressed out from work stuff. She and Mom exchange mushy words and Lety also tells mom that the mysterious bag she called about earlier has disappeared.

She calls Tomas up to her room for a talk. Lety explains to him that Fern's parents have asked her to go look at a house tonight and she is not looking forward to it. Tomas thinks it's funny that she has to house-hunt for Fern and his fiancee. Lety disagrees. He agrees to accompany her to the house. They go downstairs and tell Lety's parents where they're going, and RoboPop insists on driving them. Mom wants to go along for the ride.

They get to the house, which is spacious and expensive-looking. Mom and Pop wait in the car. Lety goes to the kitchen, where she finds a woman in a cocktail dress. Woops, no, she's the real estate agent. When Tomas finally notices her, he goes crazy trying to in impress her, bragging about Filmo-Imagen's great facilities and strutting around like a bigshot. It works - she thinks he's rich and starts flirting with him. He complains that the lighting is bad and he'd like to come back during the day to get better pictures. (He's using a camcorder, and from what we can see of the viewfinder, it looks like the lighting is perfectly fine. It also looks as though he barely knows how to handle a camera - odd for someone who claims to be a film tycoon!) They agree to meet again at 10 the next morning. Lety wonders how she's going to pull that off without explaining to Fern.

Some type of button falls off of Lety's purse as they say goodbye. Even though it clatters noisily to the floor, no one notices. After they leave, the agent calls someone and says she just met a couple of awesome clients. There are dollar signs in her eyes.

Mom and Pop have been listening to the radio in the car and speaking of romantically of old times. By the time Lety and Tomas get back, the windows are all fogged up. :-)

Another red bag

Alicia (all dressed in red perhaps hoping an agitated bull will put her out of her misery) gets home in a grumpy mood. The valet at her very swanky apartment building says how much he loves her Mercedes. (I get the feeling they have this conversation every day.) He hands her a special message that was left for her: Her car is about to be repossessed.

Marcia calls her from the plane. (Omar is now asleep, snuggled up against his seatmate, a male stranger.) Marcia only wants to know about Fernando, and doesn't let Alicia tell her about her latest personal tragedy. Alicia calls her a bad friend but tells her that Fern was still there in the office when she left. She suspects that he's waiting to meet with someone. (Marcia's laptop is open on the seat next to her. She has a photo of Fern as her wallpaper.)

Alicia calls her father and begs him for help. She says she would rather die than take the bus with thousands of nacos or sharing a taxi with the feas of the cuartel. She is momentarily excited when he says he has an idea, but is horrified when his "idea" is to hock her jewels (he's suggested this before and it makes me wonder if he hated his wife or something since she's the one who gave them to Alicia). She doesn't like this idea, but she also doesn't like his advice to cut up her credit cards or give up her designer clothes or 27 pairs of expensive shoes because, as she tells her father, nothing's more important than her "image."

Alicia tearfully concludes that the only thing left is indeed to pawn the gorgeous jewels (they really are very nice, antiques with lots of stones and serious gold) that were left to her by her mother and her grandmother and her great-grandmother. She cries and cries, but since her father won't give her any money, she doesn't see any alternative. (Welcome to adulthood, Alicia.)

She lays them all out on the bed to look at them. Then she prepares to pack them all into a red bag which, coincidentally, looks exactly like the one Omar left for Fern...

Corrections:
  • I haven't seen the "real" talk show host Cristina in a long while and only remembered that she was blond. When "Cristina Rivapalacios" showed up on La Fea I assumed she was the same woman (having undergone waaaaay too many cosmetic "improvements" since I had last seen her). No, Rivapalacios is a fictitious celebrity. And thank goodness. I would hate to think that the real Cristina would pay someone to do that to her lips. Sorry if I misled anyone on this.
  • I was under the mistaken impression that the Cannes film festival was going to be around the same time as the wedding and cause a conflict. In fact, the wedding and the Big Meeting are slated for September (remember the show in Mexico is about 14 weeks ahead of us) while the Cannes film festival was in August. So, there's no conflict. I don't know why I thought there was. (The real-life Cannes film festival happens in May, but I guess they changed it for plot convenience.)

Barrera de Amor recap: September 13

  • The ancient Maldonados and their ancient friends (that's Jose, Josefa, Josefina, the old dude who put salt in Sergio's tea, and Sergio) sit on a couch saying they should go to Aguascalientes and help Maite, who still doesn't know she's a member of this wealthy, aristocratic family.

  • Federico is - gasp - almost hit by a speeding car as he gets out of his own car. He swears in annoyance. Guess who's in the speeding car, it's Unibrow and a henchman. They almost hit Federico on PURPOSE! That'll show him! This is the beginning of Unibrow's brilliant plan! Tonight, Unibrow is wearing a tight, foam green suit. We will speak no more of it.

  • Maite spends all night with Valeria, who is delirious. She recognizes the symptoms and realizes Jacinta is drugging Valeria's tea. Maite hides in the closet and watches Jacinta enter, with the doctor, who says Valeria is fine. Valeria wants the baby back; Jacinta says "Nonsense! You have to rest!"

  • Somehow, Nicolas has possession of Federico's birth certificate, which proves Federico is a Valladolid. Manola and her dad fear Federico will pulverize them if he finds out they knew of his parentage all along - but Manola wants to keep it quiet until Jacinta dies and Rodrigo inherits.

  • Gustavo gets Elvira to send Nicolas a fax, on Gustavo's letterhead, saying: "I saw you kissing Jacaranda in Mexico City." No signature. Now Nicolas is really freaked, since only Jacaranda and the supposedly dead Gustavo knew this. His hand-washing kicks up a notch. Manola, ever practical, steals him some tranquilizers and says if he doesn't start taking them "I'll get a specialist to lock you up."

  • Veronica is sprung from the mental hospital for a nice weekend in Aguascalientes with all the murderers, lunatics, and ugly guys in foam green suits. In Victor's apartment she sees a picture of Victor and Guillermo. Guillermo and Mommy show up. "What are they doing here?" Victor: "Uh, they're house-sitting for me."

After Veronica and Victor leave, Mommy asks: "Doesn't she know that you are ... you are ..." "Mommy, don't be afraid to use the correct word, HOMOSEXUALS. And no, the doctor said we should not tell her till she's cured."

  • Remember the bouncing undergrad who offered her favors to Octavio in exchange for a better grade? She offers again, he turns her down again and threatens to call her parents. Federico just happens to be lounging furtively nearby when the girl and her friend discuss this. He interjects: "I think I can help - together we can get rid of this idiot."

Later in the episode Octavio is intercepted by an official on his way to class and is taken in for questioning, no doubt concerning an accusation the girl has made against him.

  • The Bonbon, in a skimpy bikini, poolside with Andres and his chest hair, jumps in the pool and pretends to drown. He dives in, drags her out, and is giving her mouth-to-mouth resuscitation when she laughs and kisses him. Oh, Andres honey, it was just my cute little trick! A paparazzi gets photos.

  • Jacinta tells her chauffeur she won't be going to church today. He is barely out the door when Federico idly and loudly remarks, "Oh, so THOSE are the famous powders you used on Maite so long ago and which you are now using on Valeria!" "Why, yes, I want to keep her drugged until her mother leaves town." The chauffeur, just outside the door, hears all.

Valeria doesn't want the tea - "I feel it's hurting me" - but Jacinta insists. "Drink it all, drink every last drop, drink it, drink it, drink it..." As Valeria drinks, Jacinta tells her once again how evil her mother the prostitute is.

Valeria then tells Jacinta: "I dreamed my mother was here last night, taking care of me." Jacinta guesses that was no dream. She tells the servants to lock the windows tight - she's sure Maite will be back again.

Heridas de Amor Wednesday September 13

Cesar is seen talking on the phone asking that Gonzalo and San Lorente Inversions are denied credit by all banks. His henchman is shocked asking Cesar what has he done?!?! Cesar laughs and blows out some cigarette smoke. Cesar then asks the henchman who does he know in the financial newspapers. He He He.

The father tells Miranda that she wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for both her parents. She claims she doesn’t pardon Fernanda but what her father did is unspeakable too. The Father tells her to cry and let God guide her. Miranda talks to a picture of the Virgin Mary and aks not to be left alone.

The hospital director comes into Fernandas office. Fernanda talks about Florencias health and says she will be willing to give Florencia HER heart if it is necessary. The director then tells Fernanda about his phone conversation with Miranda. He tells Fern that Miranda seemed shaken when she found out that Gonzalo had asked for Fern to be fired.

Renata is seen on her knees washing the floor and complaining. She doesn’t want her nails messed up. Erika makes fun of Renata and reminds her that the servants get tired too. Juan watches the girls from behind, then he asks her majesty if he can help. She gets him to help her asking him to clean the furniture etc. He gets on his knees to grab a towel as she stands up smirking.

Amparo goes to the dive to scream at Sanson. She grabs him and swings him around and starts to whack at him with her fingertips. She screams Don’t hurt us! And think of your mother as her hysteria mounts. Ramon comes in and hits Sanson knocking Sanson down to the ground.

Amparo asks Ramon why did he hit Sanson. Sanson goes into a green memory remembering how his brother was lying bleeding. He sends for Juan who enters the dive to see Sanson over a bleeding his brother. Sanson tells Juan to save him! Juan goes to the brother but its too late. The brother is dead. Like a good psychopath Sanson blames Juan for his brothers death. Juan tells Sanson that he warned him not to go to the restaurant where there were guards in civilian clothes. Sanson still blames Juan but lets him leave telling Juan he will pay for this one day. Sanson wakes from his memory and gets mad at Amparo telling her to go.

After they are safe outside the dive we see Amparo whimpering to Ramon. Ramon points out that a man like Sanson who was an abused boy by his mother is not going to respect Amparo when she tells him to think of his mother. All that will do is make Sanson think of bad things and then Sanson will want to kill Amparo. Amparo takes the advice.

Miranda goes to Fernandas office. Fernanda tells Miranda her whole story. How she was treated like an animal by Gonzalo, running her out of the house. Hunting her down and trying to ruin her after she left. Miranda questions why Fernanda didn’t come to get them and Fernanda claims Gonzalo told Fern that he would hurt the girls. Miranda then tells Feranda that she doesn’t know what to think. She asks how could Fernanda have left them with Bertha?! Fern says she has suspicions about Bertha but wasn’t sure. Miranda gets angry and says then if you suspected how could you leave us day after day with Berthas claws!!! She tells Fern all the horrible names and things Bertha would say about Fernanda like Zorra, Madrezuela and how Fernanda couldn’t control her lust. Miranda asks for time. She used to have a life, family and now she doesn’t have anything. Just emptiness and confusion. They hug strongly. Fernanda asks Miranda how she knew so many things. Miranda tells Fern that Cesar told her. Miranda claims that Cesar has been honest with her and done everything for her unlike Alejandro. Miranda says she loves Alejandro but he treated her like the biggest fool. Boo Hoo.

Fabricio tells Florencia he will do her chores for her. They act all kissy kissy. Florencia complains that she isn’t showing or feeling pregnant. Veronica comes in holding a broom and asks Fab if he has done what she asked. Florencias interest is peaked and Veronica covers saying Fab was to get some information for her on the internet. After Fab and Flor leave the room Veronica talks to herself about hating doing chores. Hate Hate Hate.

Alejandro tells Gonzalo that he has to think if he still wants to do business with Gonzalo. He claims he doesn’t mix friendship with business. Gonzalo wants to know what’s going on with Alejandro, Al is so serious. Alejandro gets upset and tells Gonzalo that G should retire with what is left of San Llorente Inversiones. Al says he wanted to construct things with G and nothing has happened. G wants time to get organized. Al keeps talking about how nothing has been accomplished. G then asks is it a fact that we wont continue together? Al says yes so Gonzalo goes in for the kill telling Al to get out and to get away from Miranda. Alejandro refuses saying Miranda is the only one who can decided that.

Luciano and Vicente are outside Gonzalos office in the waiting room. Luciano tells Vicente he will wait only 5 minutes more. Gonzalo meanwhile is calling bank for lines of credit. He gets denied every place he calls. Vincente tells Gonzalo that there is a note out to all the banks telling the banks not to do business with Gonzalo. Gonzalo is stunned.

Luciano walk in G’s office. Gonzalo asks what kind of joke is this upon seeing Luciano. Gonzalo wants to know who is behind Luciano. Who is the real partner? Luciano recites Gonzalos business history saying G started the business when he was in his twenties. He then tells Gonzalo that 85% of all executives are his age, Luciano is surprised that G doesn’t know this. After Luciano leaves Vicente wants to know if Gonzalo is ok. G stares out the window. Vicente tells Gonzalo that no one knows who is behind the black ball. Gonzalo handles a large brandy snifter filled with amber liquid. (Ahh the pleasures of alcohol when you are let out of the pin.)

Pamela tells Miranda that Fernanda has suffered. Miranda admits to being confused. Pam tells Miranda to no get angry with Gonzalo when they talk. Pam tells her to listen first. Pam then asks Miranda if she hates Fernanda. Miranda says she cant hate the woman who gave her life. Miranda tells Pamela that she knows her father ran her mother off. Later Pamela and Miranda talk to Tomasa. They asks Tomasa about “The Night”. Who shot the man? Why haven’t you told me this? Tomasa says that “they” are the only ones who know who shot the man. Tomasa wants to know how does Miranda think her sisters will take the news of who their mother is. Miranda tells her that she wont tell her sisters yet. Tomasa stalls some saying that if Fernanda comes to live at the house she should be the Senora of the house. Why?! Tomasa finally spits out that Fernanda is the only owner of the house (mexico city mansion).

Cesar packs up his office and tells his henchman buddy guy that he wants him and Nuria to be the last to leave the company. Nuria comes in saying that the Banks wont lend Gonzalo money. She sees Cesar grin and asks if he has something to do with it. He calls her over then grabs her throat (squeezing?) and warns her to never ask that again. Henchman Buddy guy is angry to see Cesar do this.

Gonzalo wants to go to the club to see if he can find out who is behind the black ball. Vicente tells Gonzalo that Miranda cancelled the club membership. Gonzalo says he will go home. Cesar walks in giving Gonzalo a report he supposedly did while Gonzalo was in jail. Gonzalo says its easy to bite the hand that feeds you. Cesar claims that neither he nor Julio are at fault. After Cesar leaves Gonzalo gives the report to Vicente and tells him to look at the report and if he needs to call the police.

At home Miranda is seen pouting on the couch. Gonzalo comes in and she immediately gets up and verbally attacks him. Who did you kill?! The man who according to you and Bertha my mother ran off with! Why did you make Fernanda go! Gonzalo says he told Miranda not to talk with Fernanda before taking with him. Miranda says that was impossible since Gonzalo didn’t come home but instead went to the Polanco Apartment. Gonzalo says that he had to think about the business and that this could wait. Miranda doesn’t like this and keeps asking Why! Gonzalo recounts his side of the story saying that Fernanda was younger than he. He knew she was in love with someone before they married but then Flor was born and then her. They were happy. Then before Renata was born he started to get anonymous notes saying that Fernanda was in love with someone else. Gonzalo says he came home on his birthday and found Fernanda kissing another man in his library. Miranda screams it was easiest to kill the man to clean his (G's) honor right? Then after you ran my mother off why did you try to smash her?!

Alejandro comes to talk with Fernanda. Fern tells him to calm down and to stop screaming. Alejandro tells Fern that he broke his partnership with Gonzalo because the only reason to keep on with it was Miranda. Fernanda tells him she just finished having a real conversation with Miranda and Miranda knows everything. How! Alejandro screams. Cesar. That enrages him more. He wants to know why Fern hasn’t told him about Cesar before. She forgot. How much does Cesar know? Does Cesar know who Gonzao shot? Fern thinks that Cesar doesn’t know who Gonzalo shot, at least he hasn’t heard it from her. Alejandro then tells Fernanda that Miranda spent the night with Cesar.

Tomorrow ads show Miranda stoking her cell phone saying how she loves Alejandro. Looks like these two aren’t over yet!

Heridas de Amor Tuesday Sept. 12

You will recall that Flor told Faby she might be in love with Alejandro Luque. Suddenly he is Mr. Attentive, "You can't be saying this! You can't be in love with Alejandro! We're in love and only having a temporary crisis. I'm suffering too, you know!" She falls into his arms and weeps, "Help me, you're so much stronger than I. Help me cope with this rage and desperation. I can't explain what's happening. I feel an invisible force is squashing us and we're unable to escape." He tells her they must stay united against all tests and hardships. Nothing can separate them, not even death! They make out. Mission accomplished, eh Faby?

Carola offers to let Raul stay at her pad. She asks him if he has seen Juan. He tells her that Juan was at the big hacienda that he went to with Lasagna. Juan was there caring for a girl with a fatal heart condition. He's pretty sure that Juan has fallen for one of the super good-looking rich girls. Carola is bummed.

Juan (baring his glistening rock-hard chest) and Squeaky (with heaving breast) are talking outside. He says someone as beautiful as she must have lots of boyfriends. Oh sure, she says. To her men are like disposable hankies, she uses them then tosses them away. She supposes it's the same for Juan and his girlfriends, right? Mr. Serious says no, he would never use a woman that way. A woman should be protected and cared for like a precious treasure. She's liking this talk and caresses his face. He grabs her and tells her not to play with fire (again!) then lays a passionate kiss on her. Veronica and Erika are spying on them.

Amparito sits in the dark pining for her boys. Francisco comes home and can't believe that Raul left. "What did you expect idiot?" she says, "You kicked him out!" Wrings hands. She accuses him of always messing everything up and she is left to pick up the pieces and put them back together. He tells her he may have made bad decisions but at least he never assaulted a person. She tells him that he kicked Juan out for trying to defend what Francisco is always yacking about, the family unit. Blah blah blah, enough of this, let's move on...

During the commercial Flor and Faby made love. Now they are enjoying the afterglow. Flor says it's been a long time since she's felt this happy. She's hungry and sends him off to make some lunch. Alone, she has a green flashback where Superslut Veronica intimates that Faby and Miranda are still getting it on. Flor says no, her husband doesn't have eyes for any other woman. Veronica tells Flor that she's one of those women who "hacen de la vista gorda" (makes with the fat eye), i.e. turns a blind eye, while Faby "puts horns on her", i.e. cuckolds her. (Remember this phrase from Alborada? They were always "putting horns" on each other.) Flor wonders if Fab thinks of Miranda while making love to her.

Juan tells Squeaky that because he is dedicated to his work he hasn't had time for a girlfriend. She admits she hasn't had many boyfriends either, in fact there is no one she has ever called her boyfriend. He asks her how she will treat him tomorrow morning. She says it's a reality that things can't be as equal as they are right at that moment, correct? He gets mad, "I knew this was too good to be true! Excuse me but please forget everything that I said to you because nothing is true!" He stomps off and Squeaky rolls her eyes and shrugs.

Veronica is lying in wait for Faby. As he stands outside Flor's door holding a tray of sandwiches she demands her blackmail money. She forces him to make out with her then tells him she wants the money first thing in the morning. She slaps and pinches his butt as he takes the tray into Flor's room. (Serves him right if you ask me!) Alone, she massages her sore lymph glands.

Miranda is crying softly in a darkened room. Tomorrow she's going to talk to her dad. She wants an explanation of what Cesar told her. How differently Cesar treats her compared to Alejandro. Cesar doesn't lie to her and has always treated her the way she likes, up front and truthful. (!!!!!) She has been very cruel to him for a long time but that's all changing as of now. (!!!!!) Cesar enters, says he knew she'd have trouble sleeping, just like when she was a child. He uses the old "we've known each other since childhood and nobody understands you like I do" routine, she should rest, she's safe with him. She falls for it, the sucker.

Squeaky is on the phone with her tiita Berta. Things are screwed up around the hacienda because the servants are all gone and they're going to have to do their own work. She tries to get Berta to tell her where she is.

Carola's phone rings. It's a client and Raul has to leave. He reminds her she said she was giving up the biz. "Oh this is different and it's the last time, I promise!" Oh puhleeze! But wait, it gets better..."It's only because this guy's dad has a big company and he's promised me a job." (Guess a resume won't work half as well as whoring yourself out.) "Aguas*, Carola," warns Raul, "He's probably just using you for sex and has no intention of giving you a job." (Ya think?) Raul leaves. The client turns out to be Daniel, one of Don Julio's attractive but odious sons. He tries to kiss her and she struggles away from him.

*Why "Aguas!" (water) as a warning? This is a holdover from the days when the contents of bedpans were tossed out the window onto the street below. Before heaving the watery contents the tosser would yell "Aguas!" as a warning to those passing underneath.

Erika tells squeaky that they saw her kissing Juan. Squeaky says "Don't remind me of Pepe el Toro in times of hunger." Does anybody know what this means??? Erika wants Squeaky to come and check on Veronica who is not well. Squeaky doesn't want to because she says Veronica might look like that girl from The Exorcist but she goes anyway. In the room Veronica is feverish. Erika points out that night sweats and intermittent fever are classic signs of AIDS. Squeaky goes to get the hunky Doctor Juan.

Carola is mad at Daniel. No kissing on the mouth allowed and he knows the rules! A kiss transmits feelings and messages. She will only kiss someone she loves. "And you're not in love with me?" he asks. She says she's known him a long time, knows what he likes and what he doesn't like (heh heh) but she's not in love. He asks if she will promise to kiss him one day. "Yes," she says, "the last time we see each other." (I wonder if he's secretly in love with her, if so then that makes the second time this actor gets to love a whore. Remember Perla in Alborada?)

Alejandro and Luciano are still getting likkered up in the bar. Al calls Miranda's cell phone and Cesar answers. Al goes ballistic and wants to talk to Miranda NOW! He wants to know where they are. "Shhh, we're sleeping," whispers Cesar, grinning like the Cheshire Cat. Al totally loses it and creates a scene at the bar.

Meanwhile Miranda is recalling a green memory starring the toxic Berta when Cesar enters the room. He tells her about Al's phone call, reports what was said and predicts he'll call right back which he does. Miranda tells Al, "Cesar told you very clearly that I was sleeping. For God's sake stop pestering me!" Cesar smirks. Miranda cries. Again.

Al blows a fuse because he thinks Miranda and Cesar are "together." He orders Luciano to sell the stocks tomorrow. If Miranda wants to play dirty let her. Luciano reminds him that the board members (including Miranda) are supposed to get first dibs on the stocks. "Screw protocol," fumes Alejandro, "do what I say!" He glares and flexes his jaw in anger.

Juan checks Veronica and tells her she has to go to Mexico City to get checked for HIV before he can prescribe anything for her sore throat. I think he should prescribe decapitation and put her out of our misery.

Lasagna tells Flor that she prepared her breakfast for her. She tells Flor that Alejandro cares for her and thinks of her as a sister so she (Lasagna) will think of her the same way. After she leaves Faby comes out fresh from his shower and hugs Flor who ruins the moment by asking if he made love with Miranda again. He tells her no, never!

After the hunky Doctor Juan leaves the room Veronica, who should be damned scared that she's contracted HIV, is feeling playful. She teases Squeaky, "So you haven't managed to conquer him yet, hmmm?" She bets her car that Squeaky can't get Juan to propose marriage to her. "It's a bet and Erika is the witness," says Squeaky, "but not a word to La Morena (Lasagna)."

Miranda is back at the hacienda. She tells Tomasa she needs to talk to her about something. Apparently Gonzo called while she was at Cesar's and Tomasa covered for her. Berta calls and lies to Miranda, telling her she's in New York taking care of important business for her friend who died. For a reason that completely eludes me Miranda tells Berta to hurry home because Gonzo's out of jail and many things are happening. Also, I don't know why but Miranda is waiting for a locksmith. Anyway, the locksmith can't come until tomorrow.

Update** my pals at work reminded me that Miranda is waiting for the locksmith to get into Berta's room to retrieve the mysterious documents that Alejandro wants.

In a scene of extreme deja vu Cesar is once again looking at very official papers of the transaction of the infamous stocks and asking Luis if is sure there's no proof against him. Luis says it was a completely clean transaction blah blah blah. How many times are these guys going to have this stupid conversation? Nuria enters and tells them Gonzo has arrived and is in his office with Vicente and Alejandro. Cesar and Luis gloat that Don Julio will be ruined.

Gonzo offers Al a partnership in SLI, for an investment of course. Al says it's a good offer but the truth is he doesn't know the business completely and he doesn't like to participate in things in which he does not have control in all senses. Gonzo and Vicente say they will teach him everything. Al says he's got to think about it and consult with Daira and Lasagna because the capital is their money too.

I skipped this next part with Cesar because I'm sick of hearing his voice. But I can tell you with complete confidence that he is either plotting to ruin Don Julio and/or Gonzo, and/or scheming to marry Miranda.

Miranda is visiting Padre Santiago for spiritual guidance. He tells her not to judge her father too harshly. He tells her to talk to Gonzo, then Fernanda, hear what they have to say then draw her own conclusions. She mustn't forget that they are the two who gave her life. She sits and weeps. Again. He tells her to cry until the tears cleanse her spirit; God will help her make the right decisions. She prays to the Virgin, "Don't let go of my hand at this moment. Don't let me walk alone in the dark." Sniff Sniff.

Barrera de Amor summary: September 12

One of the most padded, repetitive episodes ever. All previous tedious months of the novela were rehashed.
  • Maite overacts frantically while Unibrow, in ghastly closeup, simpers leadenly (what a glistening, quivering double chin he has) as they talk through all the misunderstandings of twenty years and swear vengeance on Jacinta. He - leadenly - says: "I'm rich and powerful now, we can beat Jacinta at her own game."

Maite hadn't known until now: back in the day, Jacinta was drugging her with the famous "powders." That's why she was nauseated, and why she dropped baby Valeria down the stairs (almost killing her) and was thereby persuaded she wasn't fit to be a mother.

  • Maite tells the nuns their long-time patroness Jacinta is a monster and shows them Griselda's letter. They are a bit surprised but, surprisingly, calm. Maite asks to live with them in the convent for as long as it takes to win her daughter's love. They tell her about the secret passage - she will visit Valeria by night!

Meanwhile, Unibrow tells his henchmen Theodoro and Bruno that a crusade against the evil duo has begun. Then Theo shows Unibrow a news story about his son Andres, the famous toreador. Unibrow sets his jaw stubbornly and says "I don't wanna hear about it."

  • Manola and Federico kiss and plot. She suggests he destroy Octavio, the "mediocre opportunist," by making mischief at Octavio's workplace. After he leaves, Manola thought-bubbles: she knows Federico is actually a Vallodolid, but doesn't want HIM to know.

  • Jacinta hauls out the old powders and starts poisoning Valeria ("Drink ALL your tea!") to prevent any gadding about in town and asking of inconvenient questions. Pretty soon Valeria is too sick to eat dinner. She tries to crawl to her child and collapses prostrate on the floor. Cleo has the baby and is dandling it when Jacinta snarls, "Take that snotnose to your room and leave him there!"

Cleo cheerfully marvels: "What a coincidence, Valeria is getting nauseated and dizzy exactly as her mother Maite did when SHE was at the hacienda." "Never mention that again," explains Jacinta. Then Cleo wonders if it might be time to call the doctor for poor sick Valeria. "Nonsense! She's strong, like me!" says Jacinta, adding, "She is just sick because she's delicate and went out in the rain." Strong, yet delicate: no doctor for Valeria.

  • Dionisius (El Gordo) kids Andres about the blond bimbo with the puffy lips (Leonela), calling her a "bon-bon." Heh. Andres mopes and has no interest in a bonbon. "Valeria is now a nun and it's all my fault." Blah blah blah. The Bonbon plans a campaign to win him over.

  • Guillermo and Victor are mired in stilted conversations with Patricia, Guillermo's mom. "Mommy, it's good you are reading that book about homosexuality. It is the lack of information which causes us homosexuals so much damage." Mommy is going to live with them now. They also inform each other: "Some men think they have the right to hit women, but this is not true. How cowardly! If a woman is abused she should report the infraction." Having agreed with each other, they gaze manfully into each other's eyes but do not get to kiss.

With what I consider to be a spectacular lack of judgment, Victor decides to take crazy Veronica - who is still rocking back and forth with her arms wrapped around her knees, endlessly talking to herself - when he goes to Aguascalientes to support Maite in this, her hour of need.

La Fea Más Bella #101 9/12/06 A Missing Bag, Crazy Lety and Super Fernando!!

Celso, the cuartel, Alicia and el “secreto”

Celso can’t keep his promise to Fernando to keep the fight a secret for long. He tells Saimon that he has a secret. Don Fernando fought with some youths that were outside. PM looks on and wants to know what they’re talking about. Saimon weakly tells her that he can’t tell her. (They’ve been together one day and he’s already hiding from her? Can we say whipped?) Celso gives Saimon the evil eye. PM uses her not so subtle charms and asks Saimon again to tell her. Saimon keeps the secret for an even shorter time than Celso. PM runs off somewhere. Saimon tries to assure Celso that PM is just going to the bathroom. Celso, of course, does not believe him. Celso and Saimon fight some more and then Celso runs after PM with Saimon chasing him.
PM runs to the cuartel and they’re all still talking about Lety’s mysterious lunch. PM announces she has a secret. Alicia pretends to make fun of them, but she looks awfully interested in their conversation. Lety walks in and takes Sara aside to ask her if she knows what happened to the bag. “It’s disappeared!” “How?” Sara asks. Lety tells her that she’s looked for it everywhere. Sara says they just need to pretend as if the bag never existed. Lety doesn’t looked convinced but doesn’t protest either.
The cuartel still wants to know what happened at Lety’s lunch. Lety won’t tell them, so they go after PM and her secret. PM says she can’t tell them. Saimon and Celso come in and Celso lets it slip that Don Fernando was in a fight. Lety freaks. “How??? Is he okay???” She eventually wanders off to Fernando’s office. The cuartel wants details. Celso asks Alicia if she remembers the boys who were outside. Alicia says she does; this must mean that Fernando got into a fight for her. Sara knows better than to believe that Fernando would fight for Alicia. Alicia says she doesn’t care about the opinion of the cuartel, because she knows that Fernando fought for her. Carolina comes in and wants to know what happened. Alicia tells her the story (with some changed facts about the economic status of her “suitors”) Juana puts a stop to the story. Carolina says she just heard Fernando say that he did not get into a fight to defend Alicia and then excuses herself. Alicia runs after her. The cuartel has a good laugh.
Celso is in Fernando’s office, his dog is misbehaving and he’s being yelled at for telling his secret. Celso protests, and tries to tells Fernando that he only told Saimon. Fernando doesn’t really care, he wasn’t supposed to tell anyone. Sanzon grunts and licks and snuggles. Fernando tells Celso to leave and not to talk about the fight anymore.
Lola and the cuartel talk some more about the fight. They want to know why Fernando got into a fight, if it wasn’t for Alicia. Then they start talking about what was up with Lety earlier.
Celso goes back to Saimon and they’re talking. PM and Saimon get all gooey eyed and Celso decides to leave. Neither Saimon nor PM say bye. They’re too involved with each other. Saimon and PM talk about telling her son about their relationship. PM thinks it may be too early, but Saimon convinces her that they should really find a time to talk to him. After Saimon leave, PM doesn’t act all that thrilled about telling her son.
Lety passes the cuartel still acting really weird. Sara shouts to God to explain what is going on. They gather around laughing, but are interrupted by Fernando on his way to Omar’s office.

Roman and the gang

Roman is upset. He’s pretty much given up on the Alicia thing, and he’s not happy about getting beat up. A beautiful woman walks by. “Alicia Ferreira is not the only beautiful woman on the planet.” He runs off and puts his arm around the new woman.

Luigi

Luigi is in his office making over his dog when the telephone rings. He wants Irmita to answer it, but she’s no where around. He picks it up and it’s some guy called Ricardo. Luigi tries to flirt, but then Ricardo says he needs something in three days. Luigi tells him that will be impossible. Ricardo convinces him to try and Luigi says he has to talk to Fernando first. He turns his attention back to his dog.

Lety and Fernando

Cristina and Fernando talk in his office. It’s all business. Fernando wants to make sure that Cristina had a good visit. When she comes back next time, he promises that she will be received like a queen. She gets up to leave but he wants to show her a magazine with Conceptos’ Cannes nomination on the cover. He opens his briefcase and finds the letter. He sets it aside. Lety starts to talk to Fernando, but Carolina comes in and interrupts. She wants to know how his meeting with Cristina went. Fernando goes on about the nomination. Lety interrupts him and asks him if anything is hurting. “What are you talking about?” asks Fernando. “Celso said you got into a fight to defend Alicia.” Carolina can tell there’s something in the air and excuses herself. Fernando lets Lety know that he did not fight for Alicia. How in the world could she think that he would fight for Alicia! For once Fernando tells the truth. I got into the fight for you, Lety. He tells Lety that it was Roman that he fought. He remembered what she told him about Roman, and that’s why he hit him. Lety is amazed. (Her face turns as red as Alicia’s dress) Lety and Fernando are still talking about the fight when Luigi swirls in and interrupts. Luigi tells Fernando that Ricardo works for a huge publicity company and (with a few interruptions) wants Conceptos to produce an underwear commercial… in three days. Lety is off in her own world and walks off while Fernando and Luigi talk about the possibility of doing the commercial. Fernando tells Luigi to be more respectful to Lety, but Luigi just doesn’t get it.
Lety walks out and she’s in a dream world. She tells the cuartel that she’s super good (and other variations). She has a daydream where Roman is tying her up and is making fun of her. She calls for Don Fernando. He’s walking by (in Tomas’s glasses? I would assume the show would have a production budget for glasses. Anyway…) Fernando arrives, in his Super Don Fernando outfit. The girls all want Super Fernando, but Lety tells them that it’s her dream, and they can’t have him. Roman and one of his friends attack Fernando with a bottle. He takes them down easily. Next he takes out some muscley dude. He runs over to Lety to untie her, but she escapes her bonds on her own and declares her love. Now a karate guy shows up and Super Fernando takes him down too. Super Fernando tells Lety that he will always be there for Lety. She tries to get a kiss, but first his head is turned, then he’s too tall and eventually they get it right. Back in reality she’s talking about having a super hero. The cuartel is fascinated but confused. Celso walks through the room, talking to himself too. Lety talks about the sun and, as we can see, it’s night.
Back in Lety’s office Teresita, Fernando’s mom, calls. She wants to talk to Lety. She accuses Lety of going out with Fernando and sleeping with him. Lety tells Teresita that she didn’t mean to offend her. Dona Teresita doesn’t believe her and yells at her, with Don Humberto egging her on. Guess what? It’s a dream, but Teresita really does want to talk to her. She wants to surprise Fernando. Humberto keeps interrupting. They want to give Fernando and Marcia a house for their wedding gift. This knocks Lety out of it. Teresita asks what’s wrong with Lety. Lety says it must be the connection since they’re calling from London. Humberto takes the phone and he tells Lety that he wants Lety to contact a certain realtor and go and look at some houses. She needs to tape them and then send the tapes to the Mendiolas in London. Teresita takes the phone back and tells Lety that she has to make sure that neither Marcia nor Fernando find out about the house. With tears in her eyes, Lety assures Teresita that she won’t say anything. Lety has a flashback to the night when Fernando told her that he wasn’t going to marry Marcia. She cries. Meanwhile, in his office, Fernando remembers the “afterglow” of the second night when he and Lety made love. “What’s happening to me?” he asks himself twice.
Lety calls the realtor about a house. She wants to make sure that it’s impeccable. It’s for a recently married couple she tells the realtor. Fernando walks in and she hurriedly gets off the phone and tells them she’ll call back. Fernando wants to know who she was talking to. Lety lies and says she was talking to her mom. Now we get some gooey eyes from Lety and Fernando. (Notice how fast the tears disappeared). Fernando starts talking about how special last night was. Lety says yes, no matter what happens, I’ll remember it. He trips up on the phrase, no matter what happens. She tells Fernando that she loves him, but she mentions Marcia’s name. Fernando reminds her that Marcia is far, far away. He can tell something is up with Lety. Fernando wants to go somewhere to be alone together. Lety remembers her conversation with Teresita and says she really needs to go home. Fernando says she can go home a little later. She says that she can’t and runs out of the office. The phone rings and it’s Omar. Lety hands him the phone and asks if she can be excused for a moment. Omar asks Fernando over the phone if he got the red bag that Omar left. Fernando says he hasn’t got it. Omar asks how he could miss it; the red bag he left in his office! Omar calls Lety a gargoyle and Fernando yells at him. Fernando puts the phone down and goes to Omar’s office. He can’t find the red bag. He thinks that Omar must be crazy and doesn’t know what he’s talking about. Fernando stops to ask Sara on his way back to his office if she’s seen a red bag that Omar left behind. Sara remembers her conversation with Lety, stalls and then says she hasn’t seen it. Fernando argues for a little bit and Sara adamantly protests. He has to quiet her by pinching her lips. Fernando comes back and tells Omar that the bag isn’t there. Lety overhears this and realizes that they’re talking about the red bag. Fernando looks like he’s about to freak while Omar reminds him of the importance of the bag and the instructions that were in it.

Will Fernando ever find out what happened to the red bag?
Will Lety really look for a house for Fernando and Marcia?
Will God ever tell Sara what's going on?

Have a great night everyone! Talk to you all soon!
