Weekend Discussion: Las Mascotas; Animals in Telenovelas

We don't get enough animals in telenovelas that are characters.  We saw many prize bulls [Salud!] in Amor Bravio, horses in others, but rarely do these animals have names or enough screen time.  Animals are such big parts of many of our lives it's hard to believe that more novela characters don't have pets.  The mascotas in novelas, though, are often amusing and endearing.

In El Cuerpo del Deseo, the hero had a dog who was smart enough to spot his master after his spirit changed bodies (Dog may actually be star Mario Cimarro's dog):

Cuando Me Enamoro had a beautiful horse named Gitana that was much beloved by the heroine:

Una Familia Con Suerte had two darling little dogs whose thoughts kept us amused.  Here are Televisa's Lady and the Tramp, Abejita and Popeye:

Eva Luna's Don Julio had the fabulously loyal Rottweiler Max, who sadly died saving his master's life:

and can anyone remember the name of the cute little Maltese given to Laurita?:

Fuego en la Sangre had three beautiful horses for three studly heroes:

but we only found out the name of Juan's horse, the incredibly smart Capriccio:

Amores Perros has Onyx:

La Fuerza del Destino has the very people-smart Bruno:

Amores Verdaderos has Balzac (who is probably smarter than most of the humans):

Porque el Amor Manda introduced us to the outrageously spoiled Sanson:

Que Bonito Amor has a fighting rooster with a somewhat pugnacious master:

Amor Bravio had beautiful dogs, starting with Maja:

adorable puppies in the pet shop:

and Muneca, the puppy chosen by Ana:

Finally, Corazon Indomable has a horse whose name we don't know yet:

and a cute little spider monkey named Octavio:

There are others I couldn't find photos of.  We do need cats in novelas and not just as witches' familiars.

LOVE this post! Thank you UA!!! You're amazing! I love that picture of Dan in AB with Maja! LOL I remember that scene! Hilarious! Now I miss Cristian De La Fuente :(

Great idea UA, I really enjoy the animals. Usually smarter than the humans.

Alborado had a cat Chato that belonged to Isabel, a beautiful white persian & a dog that belonged to Luis's wife, Consentido, don't remember what kind but a lap dog.

I think Juan's horse in FELS was
Capricho = desire, craving, yen, fancy, whim, caprice, impulse

MEPS,
Eduardo/Franco had a horse Saleroso = graceful
Camilo's horse was Kaiser

I also love this post Urban. What a treat. The horses in all of these tns really are quite beautiful.

CME also had a beagle puppy named Beba, that Jose Ron's character gifted to Florencia de Saracho's when her proposed to her: http://twitpic.com/3q0chj

Octavio's horse is Chupetón. And this is monkey https://fbcdn-sphotos-h-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/8276_323294951126398_1766273250_n.jpg
QBA
Coloso's rooster Juan
Alegria

In Llena de Amor, Gretel had a cat named Dumas who always looked grumpy.

Thanks for this UA. Sometimes I can remember the animal better than I can remember the show itself.

Which of us who endured Duelo de Pasiones could ever forget that wonderful Belgian Malinois named Tonki or sometimes Donki depending upon the captioner for that day?

Also a tip of the hat to those well nourished rats we enjoyed in so many of our shows.

Carlos

Don't forget Moty, the pampered and beloved dog from La Fea Mas Bella. Is the same dog also in QBA?

we need to write to televisa and tell them we need more cats in the novelas.

Team kitty!

Sofia had a pretty horse in FELS, anyone remember it's name?

There was her father's horse that was smart enough to hate Fernando, but I don't remember his name.

Have to go out in a few, but I will fix this entry later.

Ellie: put me on team kitty!

UA: thanks so much for this post.

La Paloma

Yes the dog in QBA is the same as Fea. It's Anglica Marias pet.

Eddie Yañez had an extremely smart black horse in FELS. Don't remember the name of the horse or Eddie's character either!

Thanks Urban for bringing back the animal memories.
the gringo

Looks like an elderly Belgian Malinois in that first photo. Smart dogs. They use them for sniffing out drugs at the place where I work.

Ha! I see we are back to typing in both words to prove we're not a robot. This will be my third try, and the first word is "difficulty." Is someone playing a joke on us?

Does anybody else have a pet named after a telenovela character? I have a (mostly) white cat named Angel after Jencarlos Canela's character in Mas Sabe el Diablo, and my friend Jacky is fostering a Shih Tzu mix named Betty after Betty la Fea.

Carlos, I remember Tonki. He was given to Alina as a puppy, the "two years later" slide happened after the next scene and we had an adult dog.

Of all these animals my favorites are Abejita and Popeye. I love Pomeranians.

Thanks so much, UA! I've been looking forward to this post for a long time, and it's wonderful! Every TN should have at least one animal with a name and a personality.

There have been many fine mules and burros as well: Ramona's Chiquitillo in Abismo, Willie's Hortensia in Amorcito, and now India María's stubborn donkey in Corazón Indomable. And along with Carlos, I always look forward to the appearance of the sleek and well-fed Televisa rats!

Thank you, thank you UA, you made my evening topping off with the beautiful dog and horse pictures. Willa Cather my poodle will have to look for her pirate scarf from Passion and her Mexican sombrero for FELS etc. She likes to watch the TN's when dogs are on the scene. Alborada had cute burros and many fine horses but mostly drawing carriages.
Thanks for all the research you did to dig up these photos. Impressive array for our enjoyment.

Carlos, I must admit I watched most of Duelos de Pasiones, one of the weirdest tns ever, especually the ending which I won't reveal. Tonki, Tonky, Tonkey was the main attraction for me and the smart one of the characters.

I loved the two dogs, one big and one small, in Hasta Que El Dinero Nos Separe who belonged to the car agency owner, played by Carmen Salinas. The smaller dog was always excited and on its toes begging for goodies.

Always waiting for Balzac to appear. He really is one of the cutest pugs I've seen.

It was fun to remember the mascotes, UA. Thank you.

GinCA

You're welcome.

For me the main attraction of UFCS was the love story of Abejita and Popeye and the fights that provoked between their humans.

UA - Muchas gracias. I always love it when an animal shows up in a scene.

Enjoyed the friendship between Don Julio and his Rottweiler Max on Eva Luna. Don Julio swearing to avenge Max's death was the most moving moment on that TN for me.

Loved Juan with his horse Capricho on FELS, but really got a kick out of Sophia's father's horse trying to whack Fernando Escandon every time he got close.

In Mujer de Madera there were a couple of interesting pets, both owned by bad guys.

El Perico (one of the most lovable villains ever) had a parakeet (perico) and dressed in green suits to match his bird. In one of the show's final scenes El Perico was shown in a prison yard and the camera panned up to show his loyal pet perched on the prison wall.

Cumbayo, a scary spooky witch doctor with opalescent eyes had a jaguar which he kept behind a chainlink fence. He used it from time to time to dispose of his enemies. Unfortunately, but appropriately ironic, he met his end in the jaws of his pet.

Carlos

Never saw that one, but I heard it went way downhill after Edith Gonzales was replaced by Ana Patricia Rojo.

Vivi,

I remember well how Gretel and Dumas would sulk together, and how shocked we all were when Dumas took a bullet (well, a bowl of poisoned soup) for Gretel and then was delivered gift-wrapped in a box to Gretel.

Yikes!

Carlos

UA--This has been a lot of fun to read. Thanks for doing it and including the screen shots.

Does any one remember the fluffy white dog, Cuco, in Sortilegio? Felipa was the one taking care of him. That was Carla Estrada's own dog--he always reacted angrily whenever he was near Raquel and chewed the shoelaces of Ezequiel?

We do have to raise a glass or two for the cute little rats in TdA. I think they were also hired for Eva Luna.

Lily--I miss CdlF, too, and Silvia. I've just been listening to Vicente singing the main theme song and Carlos Macia. The tns I'm watching now don't reach the quality of AB for me.

Thanks, UA - what a great topic, as I've had dogs on my mind a lot lately for a variety of reasons. Nice to see some familiar fuzzy-faces!

A while back, some clever PEAM follower noted that Sansón (RIP) is probably the same dog who played the security dog Sansón in LFMB.

The first TN finale I ever watched, Heridas de Amor, had a memorable scene in which evil Aunt Bertha stuffed some pills into a hot dog and fed it to her faithful Rottweiler (or maybe it was a Doberman).

Thanks UA. Wonderful topic as you can see from the response. Cats are seriously under-represented but that's understandable, given that you can't usually train them to act a certain way, as you do with dogs.

Our little Burmese cat will come when we call her, follow us around the house, and stay off the kitchen counters if we're around (and will jump on them immediately if we're not). I imagine the independence of cats is what makes for their limited use in these shows.

How could I forget Cuco, he was cute & smart.

You know what they say about cats, they don't have owners, they have staff.

I just watched the 2013 premios again & got mad all over again, !!!!Victoria Ruffo!!!!!!!???????? & not even a nomination for Silvia Navarro QTF???

I sure hope SN has gone to telemundo, I only have Cielos to judge, but the quality of at least this one is better than televisa usual crap except for Por Ella & Amor Bravio.

Sorry, this isn't the place to vent, but I couldn't help myself.

Julie, thanks. I've been trying to remember which TN that occurred in. I'm pretty sure I rembember that the doggy was a Rottweiler and I think his name was Bruno, though I'm not certain. Berta acquired him both for security and as a companion. I believe that he was her accomplice in knocking off a beloved but metiche housekeeper.

I almost cried when she fed him that sausage and then killed herself (sniff).

Carlos

Great topic.

Remember Juan's dog in FELS, called Mariachi, I think. We had some good laughs about the dog refusing to eat Juan's bread, baked with the sweat of the topless, handsome baker brothers.

The Televisa rats made a memorable appearance in FAMILIA, too -- Pancho befriended them in prison and even brought one home.

Yes, Carlos! His name was Bruno. Poor doggie!

I'd forgotten the rats in Familia. I've forgotten almost everything about that one except the dogs and Sergio Sendel! Don't forget, there was also the fake Abejita (dyed to match) when the real one ran away!

It *is* hard to concentrate when Sergio Sendel is present.

Wonderful topic UA. Thank you. Like so many of us, I wish there were so many more of dogs, cats, horses in these shows. But killing one should be more reviled than even a priest. I was watching bits and pieces of El Nombre del Amor trying to decide about whether to commit or not. When the puppy died, it was a no-brainer--never glanced at it again.

Barbara (not the one currently with AV, but with y'all in previous TNs Need to extend my name....)

Not many people can steal scenes from a dog, Blue, but Sergio can do it.

Barbara, I had the same experience with Nombre you did. I watched it VERY briefly, but the doggie abuse was the last straw. Not just because it was cruel to the dog, but because it was cruel to the child, too. I can only take so much evil that early into a TN!

That certainly is the surest way to spot evil.

Urban:

Loved this whole post. I remember the horses from MEPS the black and white ones especially. They were beautiful.

I loved that pic you have of our Balzac from AV. He is the cutest little pug.

“Corazón valiente” had Arturo!
