Upcoming Telenovelas: Jan/Feb 2017: What’s Happening Now; What’s Coming Soon?

Amigos,

There are a few changes coming to primetime telenovelas. Here’s a rundown of what’s happening now on Telemundo, Univision and Unimás, and what’s coming soon. Feel free to share any intel in the comments.

Univision:

Despertar Contigo sprints to its finish. Its final week’s episodes will be shown in 2-hour slots, 7pm-9pm, this whole week. After that, Univision does NOT seem to be in any hurry to bring in another 8pm telenovela, and instead will run the new season of its kids’ talent show, Pequeños Gigantes (the original version of Little Bigshots shown on NBC that’s hosted by Steve Harvey).

Vino el Amor, currently in the 9pm slot, is doing so well in Mexico, it’s been extended. Let’s hope it continues to heat up on the vineyard, and we soon learn why the Mexican audience wanted another serving of vino. So far, this wine has mainly been making us sleepy.

El Color de la Pasión is in its final weeks in the 10pm slot. After moving along at a rapid clip for 80+ episodes, it’s hit a lull before what’s sure to be an exciting final few weeks.

Telemundo:

La Fan recently started in the 8pm slot, and so far is a very enjoyable comedic telenovela, worthy of the talents of its leading lady, Angélica Vale (La Fea Mas Bella). It’s a fun look at the lives of telenovela actors and their fans, and perfect for anyone looking for a light comedy with heart. La Fan is only two weeks in, so it won’t be hard to catch up!

La Doña continues at an interesting and exciting pace in the 9pm slot. It’s managed to keep the core story of Doña Barbara, while adding new elements and updating the timeframe and location to Mexico City.

At 10pm, El Chema fills Telemundo’s usual narconovela slot, and keeps the universe of El Señor de los Cielos alive by focusing on one of its key side characters.

Unimás:

La Viuda Negra (Season 1), is being re-shown at 9pm. The story of Griselda Blanco, who rises from abused woman, to the "Queen of Cocaine."

Blue Demon, at 10pm, is 65 episodes long (Seasons 1 to 3), is more of a bio-series than a telenovela, and is about the life of a famous Mexican wrestler. Unimás will show Season 1 (the first 20 episodes), and follow up sometime later with the other two seasons. Most of the actors are not typically featured in telenovelas, but most here will recognize Ana Brenda Contreras, who plays Blue Demon’s love interest. Upcoming:

After Blue Demon ends, Unimás will air Por Siempre Joan Sebastian, which recently aired on Univision, starting February 13th in the 10pm slot.

After La Viuda Negra ends, Unimás will show Mujeres de Negro in the 9pm slot, ironically starting this dark series on Valentine’s Day, February 14th. Only 51 episodes long, produced by Carlos Moreno, and starring a bevy of telenovela vets, this is sure to be an exciting series.

Plot summary: Three women, Jackie (Alejandra Barros), Vanessa (Mayrín Villanueva) and Katia (Ximena Herrera), are living unhappy marriages. Jackie is violently mistreated by her husband, Lorenzo (Francisco Gattorno). Vanessa's husband, Julio (Alexis Ayala), is involved in illegal businesses that is constantly putting Vanessa and their son, Diego, in danger. Lastly, Nicolás (Mark Tacher), Katia's husband, has fallen in a deep depression leaving Katia in charge of their home. Tired of their misery, the three women decide that the only way that they will be happy again is if they get rid of their husbands, for good…

Univision is set to replace El Color de la Pasión with La Piloto in the 10pm slot, starting March 7th (Uni has been very coy about sticking to a date or even a channel, so this may change).

Plot summary: Yolanda (Livia Brito) is a flight attendant, who’s always dreamed of being a pilot. She’s finally presented with the opportunity to fulfill her dream, but due to the betrayal of her boyfriend John (Arap Bethke), the circumstances lead to her transporting drugs to the U.S.

Thanks for posting this update, Vivi! I wish, wish, wish I could make time for LaFan on Telemundo. I'm sure it was written for Angelica Vale. She's such a talented comic.

Thanks, Vivi. I hope that the fact Vino got extended in Mexico means that it eventually got exciting - and I hope we get to the good stuff soon. We have some potentially interesting characters, but so far, they have not been been doing very interesting things.

Thanks, Viví! It is good to know what is coming up.

Vivi--Thanks for the forewarnings....
I can't believe Univision would waste 2 HOURS of prime time on shows adult men and women who want to improve their Spanish would rather NOT watch.

I am sorry to see that the new Televisa comedy novela "El bien amado" with Jesús Ochoa is not on the schedule. Oh, well, at least we have "La Fan" on Telemundo which has turned out to be outstanding. :)

Anita- It really is an interesting turnaround that Univision has gone from a nightly lineup of FOUR telenovelas to only TWO starting next week. Once it gives over that 8pm slot to Telemundo, it might never get it back.

It seems that La Piloto, with it's drug trafficking theme, might be competing with Telemundo's narconovela 10pm spot. That leaves 9pm on Uni as the sole hour of romance. So Vino better step up its game!

Thanks, Vivi. Good to know what's coming.

I watched the premiere of Blue Demon when it aired on Univision and I liked it, but I don't get Unimas and they're not running it on Hulu. Ana Brenda Contreras was a surprise. More depth and nuance to her performance than in her past TN roles. A shame more people won't get to see it.

Vivi in DC - Thank you for the update and info on prime time telenovelas!

Niecie- I've added a link to the Blue Demon promo. I caught a few minutes of it the other night, and you're right that Ana Brenda's acting was stellar. She also looks great in period costume (50s). It's a shame that they are making it so hard for people to find and watch the series.

thanks Vivi!

Telemundo- I've been seeing pronto for "Hugo Chavez: El Comandante", (60 episodes, Andrés Parra)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/El_Comandante_(TV_series)

also have seen a Miami film permit for "Jenni-Mariposa de Barrio" ("Telemundo anuncia que en el 2017 estrenará la serie autorizada de la cantante mexicana Jenni Rivera")

LXV- according to wiki, "La Fan" IS "an original idea written by Angélica Vale in 2009", adapted by Marcela Citterio.

"La Fan" 9/120
"La Dona" 44/ ?
"El Chema" 39/ ?

ViVi thanks, I think Waking with You is more interesting than Vineyard. I have watched both from almost the beginning, and this week looks to be a real Hell raiser with Maia and Herminio.

Thanks, Deb. Not only did I see an ad for the Hugo Chavez bio-series, I first heard a story about the series on NPR last week! I'm guessing it will replace El Chema when it wraps up, whenever that is.

Funny thing about the Jenni bio-series is that Univision is currently running their own Jenni bio-series. I think they're showing it on Sundays. I have no idea how many total episodes it will be. Didn't Telemundo and Uni do separate Juan Gabriel bio-series too? It's all a bit much.

Gracias, Vivi. I'm waiting for the three black widows with baited breath.

A kid talent series will certainly lose me. I have a low tolerance level for those things. It's bad enough we have La Rosa de Guadalupe at 7PM but to lose a prime novela spot at 8 is ridiculous.

Urban- It's like Uni is trying to sabotage themselves. Either that, or they are just throwing in the towel and don't think they can win the battle with Telemundo and others.

Or maybe they know something we don't, and kids' talent shows are REALLY popular? After all, Telemundo has basically just made a copy of their own version of Pequenos Gigantes, and has Don Francisco (who they also poached from Uni) hosting it.

Thanks so much for the updates, Vivi! I don't even know where to start on this mess. It seems Univision wants to compete against the variety shows going on in other channels but with bs. I'm sorry a kid game show for 2 hrs daily during prime time is the worst idea they've had.

It amazes me that this day and age Telemundo and MundoFox have managed to keep their audiences captivated with their novelas and Univision can't do the same thing. Maybe because they edit the hell out of them if they don't work or preempt them or re-schedule them on a whim...hmm...?

I think Univision worked best as it had it a couple of years back, Despierta America, Hoy, a novela at 3 pm, GyF, PI, News, light comedy at 7pm, Romance at 8 pm, dark at 9 pm, then either Christina or Don Francisco presenta, etc.

But they stick AQNMD at 2 pm and CDED at 3 pm. ???? And then MDN at Unimas and the other, newer novelas online only.

I mean, come on!

Rant over, thanks again, Vivi! :)

Superalfie- What's happening over on MundoFox these days? That's a channel I have, but haven't looked at in a long time.

UA: Is Univision really trying to sabotage themselves ?

I know for a fact that "QNMD" is staying in the 1:00pm slot (CST).

Vivi: Wasn't Telemundo supposed to be airing the Hugo Chavez series ? Glorifying a bloodthirsty, anti-US dictator is disturbing.

La Piloto has been pushed to start in March. Most likely it will start March 7, at 10pm on Univision. Mujeres de negro will start on February 14, at 9pm on Unimas

Blue Demon has a total of 65 episodes. Season 1 has 20 episodes, season 2 has another 20 that premiered on Blim the other day, season 3 will have 25 yet to air on Blim

Alex- That's great if it's starting in March. That would actually make more sense than the February date they've been saying, in regards to how many episodes are still left in El Color. Do you have a link to where you found the info?

Alex- Do you know if Blue Demon will play all three seasons straight through on Unimas, or have breaks between every 20 episodes as it did in Mexico on Blim? For now, Unimas only has it listed at 20 episodes.

Thanks for providing us such helpful information. It is much appreciated.
Helen

During the end of the promo of La Piloto now says March.

I think Unimas will air it all, tonight's episode will be #12, and the only thing Unimas is announcing is Mujeres de negro starting February 14

^ replacing La Viuda Negra

Thanks, Alex. I've included your updates.

Thanks very much, Vivi, for all this info about what's up and what's coming. I was surprised to see that Arap Bethke will be featured in Univisión's La Piloto. He was Pablo in Telemundo's Eva la Trailera last year. Is it common for actors to move back and forth between rival channels, or has Bethke jumped ship?

MundoMAX closed down, the last air date was on November 30, 2016
http://www.tvboricuausa.com/2016/11/mundo-max-cesara-operaciones-en-estados-unidos-noviembre-2016.html?m=1

Thanks Vivi. Let's hope Uni doesn't go the reality TV route too heavily. Some of us have to pay extra for Telemundo on Cable, which is why I won't do it. Need my TN fixes at night and prefer the 8 or 9 slow. Ironically, it seems the 10 slot has seen the TN's I've really enjoyed this last year, but lord, hard on the sleep hours.

Alex- Wow. So MundoFox became MundoMax, and then went out of business because it couldn't compete with Telemundo and Univision. No wonder I hadn't heard anything about their shows in a long time.

Juanita- I often see Televisa actors in the Telemundo shows, especially the ones that are filmed in Mexico. Not sure if Arap has jumped ship permanently (signed a contract), or is just doing this one series. I think these actors should have the opportunity to film with whatever production company they choose. Of course the really big stars seem to have to sign long-term contracts with just one.

My cable company didn't carry MundoFox, so I wonder whether their distribution ultimately killed it. If you aren't in a big market like New York you're behind the 8 Ball.

I hope that this kid talent show is really limited run. I like watching 3 novelas.

Vivi, let me add my appreciative thanks for summarizing what is to come.

Like others, I am sorely disappointed that we will be losing the 8:00 hour (in addition to 7:00), away from our beloved telenovelas.

It seemed only yesterday there were stellar offerings at 7, 8, 9, and 10 and I had to pick and choose, hating not to be able to watch 4 straight hours. But, I often managed 3 hours (although I couldn't do it now).

Once I watch something, I stick to it, so I will be with Vino for the duration. I'm with daisy, 10 is simply too late although I have had some sleep deprived nights watching El Color...My ability to try and comprehend more Spanish has diminished but like Anita, I am grateful for the opportunity to continue to do so. Very disappointing.

Thank you Vivi!

Diana

Diana: Did you notice that Univision updated their TN promos ?

UA: I'm looking forward to watching "Mujeres de Negro" with the lovely Ximena Herrera from "Infames".

Steve, no I hadn't noticed (?) I saw one or two quick scenes of Livia Brito but that is about all...I will need to keep a sharper eye out.

I would also like to watch Mujeres but it will be on at 9 and I'm committed to Vino (sigh)...and to tell you the truth, I'm not even sure I get Unimas...

Diana

I just saw that Unimas doesn't have episodes on their site. DVR, DVR, DVR....

Thank you Vivi!

I saw on Twitter that in Mexico Vino el Amor just hit ultimas semanas. Yesterday was episode #126 there from what I can tell. Clicking the Mexican hashtag #VinoElAmor gives you spoilers by the way, so if you're avoiding them, the USA hashtag is #VinoAmor without the El.

This lull on ECDLP has made me realize I need the 10 PM hour back and so I shall be skipping El Piloto. I'm not into narcos anyway.

Univision is definitely messing around with the programming. I wonder if it is as with US soaps, where the networks have discovered talk and variety shows are cheaper to make.

Being the Horacio Pancheri fangirl that I am, I am excited for his new telenovela which just started filming. It's called En Tierra Salvajes and also stars Christian de la Fuente and I know there'll be doubters as it is a Mejia production. I personally don't mind those as I like my telenovelas to be a little over the top. I've not seen a mention of when it will premiere in Mexico or when/if it will hit the USA.

The one most indicated to replace AQNMD is Simplemente Maria 2015 (Claudia Alvarez, Jose Ron, Ana Martin) which is entertaining to say the least.

Thanks for the imfo Vivi. Univision
Had a strip of imfo running at the bottom of the screen all day yesterday
Wasn't english. I'm totally language challenged so I needed to know what Was going on. Lol, thank you Vivi :)

Nina- In my region they've been scrolling a message that those who have Spectrum cable could lose access to Univision and UniMas, if they don't call a certain number. It's likely the same message you're seeing.

Thanks so much Vivi. Since I'm not watching any of the current shows I've been waiting for one to end in order to jump back onto the patio. 3 black widows looks like a good.

Thank you very much Vivi!!! This was so helpful to me because I was praying for another good telenovela to watch since Color is ending soon and Vino will end soon after from what I read above. I always need to be watching 2! Thank goodness I have a DVR because I just now set a recording for the MUJERES de Negro!!! I didn't know anything about that TN but sounds like it will be good!!!! and I usually only watch Univision. I was thrilled to hear Vino was extended a little--- The transitions from one TN to the next are quite difficult for me. I hate leaving my "gente!!" I am of course fed up with these Vino characters and I'm quite ready to see Graciela ,Lilian and Juan and Perla get their comeuppance but I still don't want it to end too soon. I'm sorry to be using anonymous but I have misplaced my UN for caray since I have not been on it for at least a year.
If anyone hears any additional good reviews for MUJERES, please inform!!!

Oh. I just reread above comment that VINO is on episode 126 in Mexico and ending soon so thank goodness we have lots more. We are only on in the 60s!!! We have many weeks to go! Yay!!!

Update!! Season 2 of Blue Demon will premiere on Blim February 24. I read it wrong the other day.

Por Siempre Joan Sebastian will air on Unimas starting Monday February 13 at 10pm/9c

Update!! I had read wrong about season 2 of Blue Demon, in MX it will be added to Blim on February 24.

Por Siempre Joan Sebastian will air on Monday February 13, at 10pm on Unimas.

It seems for now Unimas will air one season of Blue Demon. I will let u know once it will return to Unimas.

Thanks for the update, Alex.

Btw, Unimas is is announcing another series for March called La Hermandad

https://es.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/La_hermandad_(serie_de_televisi%C3%B3n)

Season 2 of Blue Demon will air in March on Unimas.
