La Pola - August 1-5, 2011 - A child is born and a mother is buried

Dear anxious Pola fans,
Here's a place for your comments. I’ll copy and paste Martaivett’s recap as soon as she posts it (or Pasofino sends it to me.)

And here's Martaivett's recap, as promised:

Lose one supporter, another one's arrival
turns a soul around and the war is closing in, putting Pola and Alejo
on different sides?

La pola monday:
Friday ended up with Alejo
going to see Pola late at night to tell her he is leaving for Popayan
to fight with Baraya against Gov Tacon’s troops. He told her MI was
locked up in a convent and Pola should not doubt him. will you wait
for me?... maybe when you get back we can marry…I never could have
guessed I would see the day you would fight against your king… I am
not fighting my king, I will fight for America, for someday being able
to marry a woman who is not my ‘equal’…

Domingo touches Cata;s
leg, she wakes up and asks what he is up to. He excuses himself, just
that she is so pretty, he asks how is the preg going… she says fine…
She tells him Acacia is also pregnant. He is glad, he got two slaves
for the price of one. That way he recovers the one slave he lost.
Cata asks why he won’t give Acacia’s child the freedom, he is not in
agreement.
He is already planning to what
work to give that new slave…

Antonio gets home. Magadalena
keeps trying to push him away to go do his important fight instead of
staying home and watching over her. Antonio says he will give Jorge
Tadeo a chance to come through for the town while he takes care of his
ill wife… IF she is not beside him, none of what he does will
matter…

Domingo tells Acacia that her child will also be his
slave. She knew that already. Misia Gertrudis is also pretty dry with
Acacia… Domingo is looking forward to the child he has been waiting
for.
Cata slips ‘good thing my child will be free’… Domingo asks
what she means but then they brush it off afterwards.

In
Popayan Francisco is talking to the town again, with Maria Teresa and
Tacon beside him. Tacon gave him an announcement to make, puts all
townsmen to fight in the name of God and our beloved Spain… whoever is
against the King is against Popayan city. Need more troops to
confront Santa Fe troops approaching, so Gov has created a new tax
for funding this fight. Also the troop numbers are not enough so he is
offering all slaves to fight in exchange for their freedom once they
win the war. Hooray for our Gov Don Miguel Tacon. Maria T asks who
came up with the idea of the slaves fighting. Francisco assures her it
was Tacon’s idea, he just read.

In Santa Fe, Pola is saying
goodbye to Alejo while Pedrito and Viviancito comment what is going
on. Pola asks if he wants to take his medal for protection. He says he
has an ammulet already (her cloth wrapped in his wrist), and a scar
(in the hand, from the blood promise of love)… Pola says can’t wait
for his return so she can give him her ‘virtue’ (he blushes and
giggles, then asks her how she says that out here in public) can’t
wait to find out what it feels like. So don’t allow yourself to be
killed. He says he will be extra careful after she said
that. They kiss goodbye (vivianito covers Pedrito’s eyes LOL). Arcos
comes by, says if Alejo doesn’t return, he will. LOL If he dies in the
fight she will regret not having given him even a kiss…
Alejo and
Vivianito say their goodbyes as friends, Alejo leaves him to care for
his sister, he will have to respond to Alejo if anything happens to
her.

Cata asks Acacia if she doesn’t mind her child will be a
slave. Or will she take a herb tea to prevent the child from being
born… Acacia is startled at even the idea. Acacia asks Cata if
Juliano will return. Cata says no… Acacia says Bernarda said he will,
there are some slave hunters in the region. So Bernarda hopes he will
be back.

Pola is crying worried at Maria Matea’s, Maria Matea
consoles her, he will be back, he is a good soldier.

Pola is
learning how to sew, Maria Matea says it looks good, but she is still
very slow. Pedrito suggests Pola work sewing dresses
for rich women. It is a good idea, but first Pola has to get faster
at it.

Months later…
Maria Matea tells Pola she is ready to
begin working making dresses for the towns ladies.

Pedrito and
Vivianito come saying there will be announcements about the Popayan
fights.
The military reader says Baraya was successful in the
first few confrontations with Tacon. Pola is very happy, 60 dead on
other side, 9 on ours.
They will have a 3 day party in town to
celebrate this success/triumph…

In Popayan, Tacon is back at
Don Gaspar’s house. He came for his ‘boxes/things’… He is in a hurry.
Francisco obviously doesn’t want him to take them. Tacon asks
Francisco for the fourth box/chest. Francisco at first denies there
was a fourth, but then has to order slaves to take some blankets off
the last one… Francisco asks if they won the war. Tacon nods no.. He
can’t stay because they will kill them all. Francisco
offers to keep them here until he returns… At Tacon’s refusal,
Francisco begs Tacon to take him with him. Tacon says he is traveling
wife-less, so he has to as well. Francisco thinks about it… and ends
up accepting. Tacon says will be back to pick him up in an hour. Pack
up.

In Santa Fe plaza, Jorge Tadeo is celebrating by throwing
coins to the towns people. Pola and the guy and son she worked with
first when she came back to town are talking that Jorge Tadeo, or
should we say Jorge I, has been throwing celebrations all the time,
several in last few weeks.
He has raised taxes instead of lowering
them, and then spends the money in parties and celebrations. Things
were better with the viceroys. They treat the workers and farmers
worse than ever. They even think Narino is a coward because he
doesn’t show up anymore… They ask her if she sees Narino to ask him
for help or His majesty Don Jorge I will finish them
all.

Cata is very far in pregancy, about to pop any moment,
according to Bernarda. Cata is nervous that Pola said she would be
back for her baby’s birth… Bernarda says if Pola doesn’t get here you
will have to trust us both (her and Acacia). Cata is afraid of the
pain. Slaves are used to it, she is not. Bernarda says as soon as you
see the baby, you will forget about all the pain.
She had five
babies, her owner sold four of them, she was only able to stay with
Juliano… Cata notes that Juliano paid her with excaping and leaving
her behind… she says a bigger tragedy is what they are about to get
into… even if Juliano never returns. (I believe she is talking about
Cata’s baby)

In Santa Fe Maria Matea comes to get Pola, she got
Maria Tadea (Jorge’s wife) to agree to order some dresses from her.
Pola notes that Jorge is president because he was elected by the rich
guys but is not liked in town. And that the
towns common people would have elected Narino. That woman is the one
who took Narino’s wife from him. Maria Matea tells her not to say
that, both Jorge and Antonio lived a decent life with their respective
wives.

In Popayan Francisco is left waiting by Tacon…
(good!!)

Maria Matea and Pola arrive at Jorge Tadeo’s house…
looks like a palace, with great paintings.
Pola is in awe of the
pretty paintings. The house belongs to the Marques… Pola learns that
she married her own uncle… maria Matea says they married to preserve
the surname and the money. Pola comments then they are ‘very blue
blood’…
Maria Tadea comes in… behaving like a spoiled rich wife…
bragging that her husband is the representative of the king in Nueva
Granada, brags that the towns people are happy (yeah right!). Pola
sits down.. Maria Tadea asks Pola who authorized her to sit… Pola
appologizes and says she will make a dress better than she
imagined. Maria Tadea laughs and says her own dresses are imported
from Europe. She wants Pola to make dresses for her slaves… Can you do
that?.. Pola says she will make them dresses even prettier than the
one she planned to make for Maria Tadea (LOL!! Maria Matea has to jump
in and tell MT that Pola is dumb and doesn’t realize what she
says)..

In Popayan, Maria Teresa notices what Francisco is
planning to do and is surprised with him (again) that he was planning
to leave her behind alone. Francisco tries to lie his way out. But
Maria Teresa sees the cognac he had bought with the money he got for
selling Acacia. She finally tells him go ahead, leave me. You have
left me for many years now. Francisco claims he was doing it to save
his life, and that troops won’t harm women. So she would have been
safe.
He lies again and says he was going to come back for her or
send for her… he can’t life without her. (LOL!) she laughs, obviously
not
believing him. He claims he can’t live without her. They have had bad
moments but he depends on her, for food, for clothing, even personal
hygiene. She says it always happens to her with all he says to her,
not sure if it is a compliment or an insult.

In Santa Fe,
Maria Tadea keeps bragging about Jorge Tadeo’s power, then she
denigrates Narino as a low life who has always envied the titles,
money or the intelligence of her husband. Pola has been hearing that
and comes saying she is done measuring the slave girls.
Pola again
treats Maria Tadea a bit cold ‘sewing is not the hardest thing I have
had to do in my life’… and Maria Matea has to come through for Pola
again.

Maria Teresa receives a letter from Leandro. Francisco
demands that she give it to him, but she no longer will allow him to
read her mail or order her around. What for? So you can order me
around? Tacon escaped with all the city’s treasures but left his wife
behind. You were planning to do the same, but he turned out worse
than you, because he left you stranded. Francisco has to appologize
and asks her to read the letter. Leandro says will soon return with
Col. Samano.
Francisco asks if there was any message for him, MT is
happy to say he didn’t even mention Francisco.

Cata is afraid
of the baby’s arrival still, still waiting for Pola to get back in
time.
The slave hunter brings back Juliano, obviously expecting the
ransom money from Domingo.
When Domingo recognizes Juliano, Cata
gets scared.

The Colonel and the troops arrive at Don Gaspar’s
house… they all run in… including Alejo.
Francisco and Maria Teresa
are hiding under the staircase…

At Jorge Tadeo’s house, Pola
brings the dresses, tells MT MM sends her greetings and hopes the work
is at her satisfaction… MT treats Pola very coldly…
While Pola
waits, she gets to hear a conversation of JT,
Sabio Caldas and Camilo T… Jorge T is planning to create a new
congress, composed of new people, and they will force this new
congress to accept the Junta (themselves) as the governing
force.

At Gaspar’s house in Popayan, the colonel finds
Francisco and Francisco shoots at him. When the Colonel is about to
shoot back, Alejo sees them and yells not to shoot them, that they are
his parents. That they are not soldiers, that they were just older
people trying to defend themselves. Alejo finds himself in the
neccessity to say that his parents support their cause. Alejo pulls
his friendship with Baraya to help him convince the colonel to not
take them prisoners.

Cata is really upset… She pulls a pitch
to Misia Gertrudis that the slaves are being treated real bad. Misia
says you are talking like Pola… better tell Domingo not to let Pola
return or she will spoil Cata even more.

Back in Popayan,
Baraya makes an
appearance… He has heard Francisco is a big supporter of Tacon and
that Tacon frequented that house much. Francisco claims it was not
really friendship and the support was forced. And that he supports the
‘american’ cause. His evidence? Don Gaspar trusted him with his house
and Alejo is fighting with them. Colonel does not believe him.
Francisco has to swear in the name of God that it is true. Alejo looks
at him in disbelief.

Back at Don Jorge Tadeo’s house, they
are discussing whether or not to bring Baraya back for their safety.
Jorge reminds Camilo why they sent Baraya away, so he would not team
up with Narino. Camilo notes that their own security is more
important. That Narino is not that powerful anymore. Jorge is not so
convinced… Maria Tadea catches Pola eavesdropping on the President. MT
tells Pola she is not respectful to people ‘like her’… the daughter of
a Marquis and wife of a ViceCount… Pola says she
had heard she was the daughter of a pig and wife of a donkey. Pola
is very willing to repeat… lol… but MT is offended and won’t even pay
Pola for her work. So Pola says I had heard your kind was pretty stiff
with money, but had not heard you were also thieves.

Now that
they were left alone, Francisco’s true colors come back out and he
says Alejo has betrayed his own blood… Alejo claims that the south
troops are not against the king… And all he is doing is following his
‘kind’ of inpure blood… Maria Teresa does not understand. Alejo says
my father knows what I mean… But Francisco won’t talk about that
subject now… As long as he fights for that side, he doesn’t want Alejo
to step in that house again. (and whose house is that?)

La
Pola tuesday:
Domingo pays the slave hunter… not exactly happy,
expects Juliano to escape again… the hunter says you can keep him
chained to a ‘morita’, which is very
heavy, (probably no less than 150 lbs)… Domingo will keep him chained
to it… The hunter asks for more money for the morita.

Pola
comes back to Maria Matea’s… MM says MT came complaining… the only
reason she will forgive Pola is because she is not that fond of MT
either… but towns people will also be talking about her offenses to
MT… MM gives Pola a letter from Alejo… Pola and them all get real
happy that Alejo is alright.

At Gaspar’s house they are all
sitting at dinner… Francisco is badmouthing Tacon now… says Gaspar
wrote that they will be back soon… Baraya expects Francisco to
convince Gaspar’s accountant/administrator to provide a good monetary
contribution for the troops… Baraya says Tacon has taken refuge in
Pasto, and getting in there won’t be easy since the Pasto folks are on
Tacon’s side and will fight to the death… Maria Teresa asks if they
are still loyal to Spain…

Pola tells
Jose Maria about what she heard at Jorge Tadeo’s
house…

Juliano is getting whipped for having escaped… Juliano
tells Bernarda that he failed Nicolasa, that he could not find el
Palenque even after walking for days on end.. he wants to die and be
with Nicolasa. Domingo whips him to make him an example for the other
slaves, despite Bernarda’s pleas…

At popayan streets, alejo
talks to Baraya, tells him about knowing the town well because he used
to be engaged to MI from there, her dad stopped the engagement and
sent her to a convent... but does not tell him about
Pola

Catalina makes a pitch to Domingo in favor of the slaves
in general trying to get Juliano off the hook… seems it worked,
Domingo hauls Cata away but stops whipping Juliano

In Popayan,
Alejo explains to his mother that they are in favor of the King of
spain, but against the spanish government led by Napoleon Bonaparte’s
brother Jose. The
colonel says they all respect the king’s authority except Narino…
Baraya jumps in front of Narino… Even when their ideas are a bit
different, he always has respected Narino for being brave and
honorable. Francisco asks about the gossip about Narino… saying if it
is true Narino is against the king, they should be confronting him.
Baraya says he hopes they will never have to confront
him.

Colonel insists that the gossip is that Francisco was on
the side of Tacon… So they put pressure on Francisco to convince the
town (read the announcement) to get on their side. He announces that
the slaves must return to their original homes and they won’t fight or
be freed.

Domingo is questioning Cata on her support for the
slaves and especially Juliano. She makes a general pitch pro all the
slaves… Domingo says she has suffered, even cried for Juliano. She
says she feels guilty for Nicolasa and her baby’s death… She made
their
lives miserable. God won’t forgive her for those deaths… Domingo
swallows the bait… He won’t whip Juliano anymore but will put him to
do hard labor cutting down trees or breaking stones/rocks… He tells
her this better be the last time she questions his authority in front
of the slaves…

Jose Maria and Pola come to Antonio’s house…
Antonio says it is not a good time… but when Jose Maria tells him what
Pola heard… that there are regiment troops approaching Santa Fe from
the north and south… and that Samano will return soon… Antonio gets
alarmed about Samano since that means Spain is not really thinking of
a pacific resolution…

In Popayan Francisco reads a notice
fully in favor of the ‘american’ troops and against the french and
against Tacon as a french agent. The troops are confused since
Francisco himself was Tacon’s best ally just recently.

Domingo
tells the lead slave that he cancelled the
whipping but wants Juliano to be chained to the ball and to cut stone
away from the hacienda. Bernarda is the only one authorized to
approach him to bring him corn and water.

Jose Maria and Pola
tell Antonio that the people are worse than ever, even if Jorge Tadeo
keeps trying to convince everyone of the contrary with all the
celebrations… Antonio is still reluctant to leave his wife alone… Jose
Maria does not feel up to being the leader… Antonio is not optimistic
about confronting the junta if the troops are against them… Pola says
the will of the towns men is stronger than any troops… he does not
want blood shed among brothers… he wants to use ideas and arguments,
he wants to let the town know what is going on and let it be the town
people who decide what they want… Jose Maria says we got to do
something asap, each day is a day of advantage for the
enemy…

Bernarda brings food for Juliano but he does not want
food, he wants to die… Bernarda gets sad

At Gaspar’s house
Alejo is saying goodbye… Francisco is still in reprimend mode…
Francisco blames Alejo for making him deny his own king… are you
sleeping with her yet? No.. not yet. What are you waiting for then? To
the moment we are all considered equal so noone will call their
relationship a sin and they can marry the right way… Francisco asks if
they will ever see that day… Alejo says ‘just like we just saw you
deny your king in front of the whole city’… Maria Teresa asks Alejo if
she is invited… he is happy to say of course, mother. Francisco asks
her she thinks he will allow her to go… she says the most important
thing for her are her children, so if Alejo wants her to be there, she
will be there. Alejo thanks her, Francisco leaves in a huff.

At
Antonio’s house, he continues to care for his wife… she tries to
convince her that she is ok, he says no you are not
ok, and I need you… she asks of something is up since some folks came
to see him… he has to be honest and say the situation is really
critical… the enemy is approaching from all sides but Santa Fe leader
does nothing but give parties… Magdalena sends Antonio away to lead
his folks, else their own suffering will go to waste… he wants to stay
but Tonito says he will care for her and the family… if you don’t go
now you will hate her and yourself all your life.

Bernarda
tells Cata that Juliano wants to die, won’t eat anything, says he has
no reason to live. Bernarda begs Cata to stay away from Juliano but
she thinks she can convince him to eat. Bernarda keeps insisting to
leave him alone, or are you going to tell me that you are willing to
escape with Juliano and abandon your husband?

Alejo asks Maria
Teresa how MI is, MT tells him about MI’s escape and going crazy. He
asks her if she thinks he should go see MI. She
says no, she has gone a bit nuts and he could make her worse. Alejo
thanks his mom for saying she will come to his wedding, even if it is
not true. She says it is true. She asks Alejo ‘Is she a good honorable
woman? Absolutely… then I will be there for you. Alejo asks MT how are
things with his dad, she is resigned to the husband God assigned to
her. She won’t go against her values and moral. He asks her what
happened to the things that were in the house. She says don’t ask
please. He asks her why she has not abandoned Francisco. She says she
is a christian woman. Won’t do it. Please don’t ever ask again. Ok.
Sorry. She gives him her blessing.

Antonio is writing next to
Magdalena… He is worried that it will take too long to go church by
church to let the people know what is going on and educate them on
their options… She suggests that he write as his way of leading the
fight. He claims he has no resources
for printing. She asks if he really forgave her… He says they are
slightly at fault in comparison to Spain who ended their lives without
even asking them. They are victims and have each other to face the
cruelty that they were forced to live. She gives him the jewelry that
Jorge Tadeo had given her so he can get money to get his paper
printed. She never sold them because they mean nothing to her. But if
it will help him reach his goal of telling the people of what is going
on, he can use them.

Cata uses Acacia to lure the lead slave
away… Cata approaches Juliano with food… she won’t leave until he eats
something. As she is approaching him with desire, a black bird
(probably a hawk or crow, not sure) flies by. Juliano says it is
Nicolasa. She doesn’t want to see them together. Cata takes it as a
joke, but Juliano says he promised Nicolasa he would stay away from
her and he plans to fulfill that promise. He blames her for his
disgraces, Cata blames Nicolasa. What do you want? Cata asks him not
to treat her this way. He says he is slave but with dignity. If she
approaches him again he will tell Domingo everything.

Baraya
tells Alejo and the colonel that their mission is to see that the
Popayan junta gets organized and implemented as soon as possible.
Colonel asks won’t that take time that Tacon will use to reorganize
and return? Alejo had suggested someone but he tells them that it is
too bad that Don Gaspar is not in town. He is a rich man but with
principles and very fair. He would be an excellent option.

Jose
Maria meets with Antonio and Pola in the bar and Jose Maria tells him
they can use Don Bruno’s press. Antonio recalls Bruno was threatened
with death when he printed the Congress resolutions. Jose Maria says
Bruno wants payback Narino and Jose Maria tell her she has to go back
to Jorge Tadeo's house and find out more hearing more
conversations, she says can't do, i called his wife a burglar
(besides telling her that was married to a pig and was the daughter of
a donkey ... or the other way around LOL)
Jose Maria nags at her
since she lost a great chance to be able to go inside Jorge Tadeo's
space whenever she can and keep spying for them. Antonio tells her (in
a much calmer tone) that next time she feels like bashing at people
for offending her, to swallow it (her anger and pride) for the sake of
the cause they are fighting for... With a repentant face, she says
will do.

Gaspar and Eusebia make it back home. Maria Teresa
wakes Francisco up and basically forces him to take off Gaspar’s
clothes and put on his own, even with him complaining that they are
old and worn out… Gaspar and Eusebia’s jaw drops at seeing their
house empty… In more ways than one… LOL Maria Teresa looks visibly
ashamed… Francisco puts on a play that Tacon stole
everything from them… and Tacon took it on Gaspar’s things since he
questioned his decisions.
Claims he even got to fight against
Tacon’s men and that Tacon intercepted all mail from Gaspar and from
Francisco to Gaspar. Eusebia faints when she learns even MI’s piano
is gone.

Narino is surprised to learn that Alejo is fighting
for their cause now... Narino warns Pola that if they go forward, it
might ultimately put Alejo and Baraya on a different side than them
(meaning she might have to fight against Alejo)...

We see
Catalina walking around the woods near where she just met with
Juliano, seems she is having contractions since the previews show she
is giving birth and the previews make us believe also that the baby is
black, Domingo is outside the door yelling asking why they won't let
him go inside...

Wed:
Magdalena manages to make it to town
with Tonito and gets to sell the jewelry. She meets up with Antonio
and
tells him that even though she did not get what she expected, the
money will help him print his writings. Antonio insists they go see
Rev Platas (the priest doctor) but she keeps saying she is ok.. Both
Antonio and Tonito are concerned but won’t go against her wishes. She
makes him promise he will look after Mercedes and Isabel as if they
were his kids… He asks why she asks that, the girls are his daughters
and always will be, he will protect them with his life if necessary.
She wishes that his wishes come true… he says they will come true if
she is with him. He needs her to be alright…

Baraya hears from
Alejo that the Valencia’s are back. Baraya asks him to ensure their
contribution to the cause is generous.

Bruno prints the new
document. He asks Jose Maria and Pola what is the intent of the paper.
To throw down the government. Bruno wonders if a govmt can be taken
down by a print press. Pola says words are more powerful
than cannons. Jose Maria says Jorge Tadeo had his chance and did not
make good use of it. Antonio comes in and says with the paper they
will inform the people of what is going on and what the President is
doing to resolve the issues. Jose Maria says everyone has to find out
the danger we run in keeping this President. Pola adds that once
people are mad enough (makes the decapitation sign) Bruno asks are we
going to take his head off? Antonio says don’t’ say that. We will
force him to do the right thing. Bruno asks what if he doesn’t? What
if he comes after us? Antonio says lets pray that won’t happen. Pola
asks Antonio for Magdalena’s health. Antonio says Magdalena did not
let him take her to doctor, she wanted him to lead the
group
trying to make this society forms the right way… Pola says she is very
brave. Antonio says very much. Everything we achieve will be thanks to
her.

Tonito is trying to get the Rev Plata to go see
Magdalena. She is really not looking good. Padre insists she go home
right now. He wants Tonito to get Antonio but she won’t let him. She
asks Tonito to go get Ines, her sister, instead to accompany them
home.

At the Valencia’s… Eusebia is back conscious. She is
upset that the things are gone from the house. She asks for Acacia to
get her some tea… Francisco and Maria Teresa tell her that Tacon
offered the slaves to join the forces in exchange for freedom… Tells
Gaspar he has lost half his slaves. Says Acacia just dissappeared.
Eusebia says she will die without Acacia.
Alejo arrives. The
Valencias are surprised he is there. Francisco tells them about
Alejo’s achievements with Baraya. Francisco lies about becoming
friends with Baraya… Gaspar asks if Francisco has joined the
‘american’ cause. Also says he will speak well of him so he will join
the new government council. Eusebia asks when they will go after
Tacon.
Alejo says as soon as the local council is organized and implemented.
Eusebia then says maybe will have time to marry MI and Alejo…
Francisco jumps in and says Alejo wants to finish his mission before
marrying MI. Gaspar asks Alejo if that is true. Alejo does not waste
time to correct what Francisco said. He is honored they are still
considering him but he will marry Pola, the girl from Guaduas.
Eusebia questions why he will marry a mestiza. Alejo says that is
exactly why he is fighting for the american cause. So one day those
nasty differences will end. And he is very proud that a woman like
Pola
wants to share her life with him. HE appologizes for any pain
this decision of his may cause them. He really appreciates them. And
he asks them to respect his decision. Francisco comments that they are
lucky that their daughter is not marrying such an Embezzle. Alejo says
goodbye and tells Gaspar that Col. Baraya asked that he be generous in
his
contribution to the cause. Gaspar says just got home and have to
check my books before committing to any contribution. Alejo asks that
he also contact the new authority in the city so he can become part of
the new government council. Francisco says to tell the Col. To count
with both of them. Alejo jumps and says (the Col) only talked about
Gaspar.
Once Alejo leaves Eusebia is not amused to have witnessed
the distance between father and son..Francisco says he can’t reason
with Alejo. Gaspar says he can understand Alejo. The boy has been in
love for a long time and nothing has been able to stop that love. You
heard him. It is a new generation / times and we won’t be able to do
anything to stop it. Fran says you say that because you are not the
father. Gaspar says no, it is the truth, MI will also suffer with
these news. Maria Teresa says they already told her about it.
Francisco tries to say she took it ok. MT says no, that is
not true. She took it really hard. And tells them about her running
out of the convent and Francisco and Jose Hilario saving her from some
thugs at the lake. Eusebia faints again.

At the press, Bruno
shows Pola how to print. You have to put in letter by letter. When the
letter molds are in place for the page, you put the ink in and then
press the paper on it. He prints her name over an old paper… they
can’t use clean paper, it is too expensive. Antonio warns Bruno
again that this can cause him lots of trouble. Bruno says he knows but
he is so discouraged with the government and they have caused him so
much trouble that he is willing to run the risk.

Catalina is in
labor pains. Misia Gertrudis comes near and Cata asks Acacia to send
Misia Gertrudis to the mayor’s office saying he sent a boy for her to
go see the Mayor..

Bruno is concerned at the radical words in
the print… Bruno says poor Don Jose Tadeo L
when this writing comes out… They brainstorm about the name of the
paper… They suggest direct names… but Antonio says he will mock the
government by naming it with the impression that they are mocking
themselves so the title will seem to say that these words are useless
ideas that don’t need to be taken into consideration. Jose Maria
questions the intent… Bruno says it makes sense. They come with the
name ‘la bagatela’ which is basically ‘useless
babbles’

Bernarda comes to help Cata in her labor. The
comadrona is there… Cata keeps asking for Pola… She does not want
Domingo to see her give birth… The comadrona says sure he won’t see
you, but he will want to meet that baby, he has been waiting many
years for this kid.

At Jorge Tadeo’s office, Camilo and Sabio
C.. tell him that Narino is writing a newspaper… Jorge T says he can’t
the newsletters are banned… Camilo and Sabio say that the constitution
(that he wrote himself, btw) gives freedom of the press. Jorge says
he wrote the constitution but freedom of the press was not stated
there. Camilo says that was one of the last minute modifications
triggered by Narino. Camilo says they have to stop that print. Jorge
undermines saying it can’t hurt them that much. Camilo is not willing
to sit and wait to see. Jorge says Narino is penniless, has no
resources to print a newspaper. Sabio C says Narino also has other
things to worry about, his wife is dying. (this makes Jorge instantly
upset)

Domingo can’t find anyone and is asking around. He hears
Cata’s squirms… Noone will open the door for Domingo. The comadrona is
asking why they don’t want Domingo to come in. Domingo asks for Misia
Gertrudis, Not here. Gertrudis is at the Mayor’s office waiting for
him. She will wait some more. She wonders why the mayor needs her
urgently for.
Magdalena is talking to the rev doctor
telling him her illness has no remedy anymore. He asks where Antonio
is. She says he is doing something useful. She wants to give him the
final rites. The priest asks her if she forgave herself. She did. She
went over all she did and can’t figure any other thing to do. At the
time she thought she loved Don Jorge Tadeo. Now she knows what is true
love, the one she has with her husband. She is dying happy because her
death will bring him the peace of mind he needs to achieve what he
wants to do. Her death will give him the freedom he
deserves.

Jorge Tadeo is heading to see Magdalena.. His wife
questions where he is going, he tells her he is trying to stop Narino
from printing a document. But he has little chance of preventing it.
He sees the jewelry she has on, recognizes it as jewelry he had given
Magdelena and this makes him loose his breath. MT questions what is
going on. HE asks her where she got the jewelry. She says from this
one jeweler.
They were not new but she got them at a good price.

Ines
arrives to see Magdalena. Mercedes wants to be with her mom. Mercedes
asks her to promise she will get better. Magda says can’t promise that
but wherever I am, I will be looking out for you. Magdalena asks
where Antonio is. Ines says Tonito were to get him.

Cata is
pushing, complaining of the pain. Outside, Domingo hears a baby cry
and thanks God. Inside, the woman is shocked, Bernarda smiles happy.
It seems the baby is black. Cata just looks at him and says hi, I am
your mom. But it is not until Acacia tells her the baby is black that
she notices. But she says that he is just the prettiest baby she has
seen.
Outside Domingo gets anxious to come in. Bernarda yells at
him to wait. Then Cata begins getting nervous about Domingo and asks
what we should do…

‘Let heaven spare us from falling again in
out old owner’s hands… the blood that we have not seen yet
from war will run like rivers in the hands of our undertakers.

Bruno says Jorge Tadeo will faint when he reads this.. and
the people will feel panic.
Jose Maria says that is the idea is for
the people to stop celebrating and begin preparing for war.
Antonio
says lets begin to print. They all assure Bruno that they want to
print these words as is.
They tell Bruno that paper needs to go out
tomorrow early. When they all step out for a second, we see one of
Bruno’s employees sneak a copy in his shirt.

The Valencias are
at the convent to see MI. The nun tells them since the escape and her
assault, she has been praying, going to mass and even learning to read
and write, that she wants to read the bible. The nun is concerned that
this visit will be harmful to her. Gaspar and Eusebia are
concerned…

MI is happy to see her parents. She thanks God they
got there. Eusebia hugs her daughter. Gaspar tells her she is going
home with the. She does not want to go with them. She wants to be a
nun. She does not want to marry anymore, with Alejo or anyone else.
She wants to give her life to God. Maria Ignacia looks a little looney
in insisting to her parents she wants to stay there.

Antonio is
at the chicheria (bar) telling everyone that this government is not
doing anything to achieve the union of the regions, are showing any
interest in considering the people. Now they want to form a new
council which will recognize the regency even if the french end up
controlling Spain. The people don’t want to continue having owners
thousands of miles away. These lands are ours! This is our country
and as such we will defend it! Even with our own blood! Whoever is not
with us has to leave!
Jose Maria wants those willing to help sell
the paper around the city to raise their hands… then he asks those who
know how to read to raise their hands. He wants those who can read
to read the paper to everyone else in town. (at that moment Tonito
comes to get Antonio.. ‘lets go now if you want to find her alive’…
).
Antonio leaves Jose Maria in charge, he does not want them to
lose the momentum.
Pola says Antonio won’t stop because of
Magdalena. When you fight for what you believe in, nothing stops you,
not even the one you love most. (watch out Pola, you might end up
eating your words)

Alejo receives a letter from Pola saying she
is happy he is not hurt and about their success… she feels that the
time is approaching when they will be able to be together, their souls
and bodies together as one.

Domingo is still knocking
desperately on the door… they still don’t know what to do… Suddenly we
hear Cata yelling loudly that ‘it can’t be’… and the woman saying it
is a tragedy… with Cata crying very loudly, seems they want Domingo to
believe that something bad happened.

At
Antonio’s Jorge Tadeo arrives… Antonio is still on the way riding
fast…
Mercedes thinks Jorge Tadeo is a doctor and wants him to go
check on Magdalena… Ines asks Jorge Tadeo to leave but he wants to see
Magdalena. Jorge Tadeo begs Ines for a moment with Magdalena… Ines
takes the girls away…
Magdalena is barely strong enough to talk. He
says he was wrong. He should have left everything for her but he did
not. He appologizes for having been a coward. He came to get her
forgiveness… Can she? Yes I can forgive you. Thanks to you and the
fact that you got fearful, she discovered how wonderful her husband
is. Jorge Tadeo says she is right. He asks her what will happen with
their daughters. Magdalena says don’t know who you are talking about.
Mercedes and Isabel will continue beside their father, Antonio. He
protests that they are his daughters. She says that truth will die
with her. Jorge Tadeo asks her what she did with the jewelry he
gave her. She says Antonio needed resources to fight our enemy. Jorge
says she does not feel anything for him, and he deserves everything
that is happening to him. He gets upset and grabs her telling her he
loves her and not to die. He will always love her. He loves her more
than Narino does. Magdalena gets
really ill, breathing with
difficulty, and Ines comes to drag him out. On his way out, Jorge
stops by the girls, but the girls walk away from him. As Jorge Tadeo
rides away, we see Maria Tadea walk into Narino’s house. Seems she
followed him there.

Thursday:
Acacia comes out of the room.
Domingo is so anxious that he makes her drop the dirty rags/sheets she
is taking away. The ‘comadrona’ comes out and tells Domingo that the
baby died. Meanwhile Acacia and Bernarda open space between the iron
bars in the window to take the baby out while Cata is crying loudly…
By the time Domingo comes in the door, the baby is gone. Bernarda is
holding another bundle that looks like the baby. They tell him he
can’t see the baby because it was born deformed… Domingo still hears
the baby cry but they ignore him. They tell him that it happens, that
Cata will be able to give him as many children as he wants. Bernarda
wants to go burry it. Domingo asks if it was a boy, and they tell him
that it was a girl, to his relief.

Maria Tadea comes to see
Magdalena. She came to ask Magda some questions to see if she can
understand what has been of her life. Magdalena asks Lucia to leave
them alone. MT says she can imagine a woman in her state of health
could not lie.
Did you have a relationship with JT before we got
married? … yes. MT says Magda was guilty of them forcing her to marry
her uncle. Magda says the ones to blame were her father and JT. They
used her to get JT away from Magda. MT asks her why she kept pursuing
JT after they were married. Magda says she never
pursued JT, he pursued her, like today, I suppose you followed him.
MT says that Magda received his visits. Did you not care about the
suffering it caused me? Magda says what about my suffering? A woman
with questionable reputation (senalada) while she waited for your
husband to fulfill his promises about loving me forever, about taking
me somewhere else, that there would be a new life for the two of us?
Who was the one betrayed? You or me? MT gets upset and denies that he
ever promised any of that to Magda. Magda says you and I are victims
of this world ruled by men. You were forced to marry someone you did
not love and I was separated from
someone who, at that time, I
loved. MT denies that she did not love JT. He is her husband and
father of her children. When Magda insists that MT say if she loves
JT, MT recognizes she does not know what is to love truly. Magda says
can’t explain it because you just feel it. It is what I
feel for my husband. I am thankful for all of this to have happened
because it helped me discover true love.

At the Guaduas mayor
house, the Mayor is surprised to find Gertrudis there. He tells her he
did not send anyone to get her. Gertrudis warns him to not come by to
try to see the baby. He is confused.

Domingo wants to burry the
baby. They tell him no need, since it was not christened. Gertrudis
arrives. Domingo tells her Cata gave birth. A dead girl. Gertrudis is
so sorry. Where is the baby? Bernarda went to burry it. Gertrudis also
says they have to give her christian burrial. Domingo agrees and sends
her to catch Bernarda.

Antonio arrives home. They are praying
for Magdalena but she is still alive. Magda keeps telling him his
place is in front of his paper. Magda asks Lucia and Ines to take the
girls away. Magda asks Antonio to marry again. He needs a good woman
to support him. He asks her please not to leave him. He could
not go on without her. She says any woman would be fortunate to be
with a man like you. He says could never love a woman other than her.
Not saying it as nagging, that is how he feels. Magda says you chose
wrong. You thought you married a woman who would support you in the
good and bad. But you chose a woman who abandoned you at the first
test. A woman who threw away a beautiful life you had offered her. But
I am dying happy. With my death I free you from a shadow on your name
and on your life. He tells her its been a long time since God gave him
the virtue of forgiveness. He has only love for her. (kiss)

Don
Camilo gets the copy of the paper that was stolen from
Bruno…

Gertrudis could not find Bernarda, they will have to
un-burry it tomorrow, let the priest bless it and re-burry it. Cata
convinces them to forget it, she is resigned already. Domingo tells
Gertrudis that they will be able to have all the kids they want.
Gertrudis goes
Huh! And when Domingo asks her why she says yes I can imagine you
will have as many kids as you want.

Back to Antonio’s… Antonio
says perfer to die with you now than to keep on living. Magda tells
him God does not want that, if God gave him the strength to overcome
all the inhuman treatment he had to live through, it is because God
has saved him for things that are much more important. Antonio says we
don’t have the resources to win. She says Spain won’t be able to beat
you. Antonio says he wishes Spain was the only enemy. The worse enemy
are ourselves. Magdalena asks him to care for their girls and the
boys… She says she found her forgiveness… and dies.
Ines, Tonito,
Lucia and the girls come back and they all cry together around
Magda.

Gertrudis waits until Domingo left to ask Cata what
happened.Cata continues with the story. Bug Gertrudis says you are
hiding something… where is Acacia? Don’t know. Gertrudis
says where she was, with the mayor. Cata comes up with the story that
she had sent Gertrudis to get the mayor to be there when the baby was
born. Gertrudis gets mad. How would you call for the mayor? You have
to forget that man. What happened to the baby was a punishment from
God for the adultery. But the problem now is how are you going to give
Domingo the kids he wants?

Camilo and Sabio come to Jorge
Tadeo’s late at night to show him the ‘paper’. Jorge Tadeo looks at
it, but his mind is not totally on it, he is drinking himself due to
Magdalena’s rejection.

Cata gets up with difficulty and manages
to make it past Gertrudis room and out to the slave barn. Acacia
tells her where she took the baby. She is tired but Cata begs her to
accompany her.

They are reading the paper for JT… The paper has
a third party indirect story about someone hearing a laughable
discussion about the advantages of a liberal government
proposed by Spain… I felt ashamed to hear this from well known people
who brag of being educated and patriots… Camilo comments that Narino
obviously is talking about them… ‘I wanted to ask them if an hacienda
is better led by its owners or by a man who is missing limbs who does
not know it nor can support it personally.’ JT has heard enough.
Camilo says they can’t let these writings go to town. JT says the
people are dumb. JT continues drinking and is sure that the people
won’t be able to relate the man without limbs to the Spain weakened by
the war with Napoleon. Sabio says it is clear. JT says for you who are
educated, not for the dumb people in this town. JT is ok with letting
that paper circulate… One of the servants come to tell him Magdalena
died. JT wants to be
alone. Camilo says the paper cannot go out.
JT is assuming that Antonio will stop the distribution of the paper
due to his mourning.

Cata gets to the barn where
the baby is crying. Bernarda tells her she has to feed it. Shows her
how to. Cata thanks Bernarda and Acacia for risking their own skin to
help her. Bernarda says it is her own grandson. They are safe here,
noone comes by. The one that must not know is Domingo. Noone can find
out the baby is alive. Between Bernarda, Cata and Acacia they will
care for it. Cata tells Bernarda Juliano must find out. Bernarda gets
upset and wants Cata to leave him alone. Bernarda reminds Cata the
baby will live as a slave, it is black. Cata says then I will take it
away… to Santa Fe, Pola will help me care for it. Bernarda says it is
too young, won’t survive the trip. Cata says then will wait a few days
until it is stronger to go with him.

Antonio tells Tonito don’t
know how we will go on without your mother. Tonito asks why God
continues to punish them. Antonio says it is not God but Spain who
continues trying to govern us from thousands of miles away. Those
who left us in misery and split us up. I will do whatever possible to
take our lands from them. Either I achieve it or I will die trying.
They embrace.

Pola and Jose Maria arrive, JM tells Antonio he
ordered that they can stop the paper distribution.. Antonio says no.
can’t waste the paper… Pola says but what about your wife. Antonio
says the best way to honor my wife is to do what we must. He is
sure.

When Domingo gets back he and Gertrudis insist in digging
out the baby and christening it. Cata gets upset and convinces them
she does not want to go through that. They agree that Domingo has to
wait a certain time for Cata to recover. Cata wants to go for a walk.
Alone. Domingo at first protests, then wants to go with her, she
insists in going alone. He agrees for her to go with Acacia.

At
Gaspar’s, he can’t understand how Tacon treated them that way, can’t
even find my clothes. Francisco insists in throwing the mudd on
Tacon… Gaspar asks about the moneys Francisco asked his administrator
for. Francisco insists in saying Tacon demanded it. He will look
through his papers for any receipts. Francisco asks Alejo to see if
they can search Tacon’s house for some of their belongings. Eusebia
and Gaspar throw a little thorn Alejo’s way about MI spending so much
time learning to play the Piano to prepare to marry him. Alejo takes
it in stride, thanks them for the reproach. He says he remembers how
flattered he felt that MI had made that effort for love of him.
Eusebia keeps with her ironic comment. Alejo says he is relieved to be
honest with them about his feelings, but he still cares very much for
MI. How is she? Not well. She went crazy.. Alejo is startled. Gaspar
explains that MI went through a mystical experience. She now wants

to stay in the convent. Francisco brushes it off as spoiled kid
reactions. Eusebia gives him the killer stare. Gaspar says she seems
very
settled on her decision. Alejo says we will have to respect
it.

At Jorge Tadeo’s, JT is dressed up and heading to Magda’s
funerals. She wants to go with him but he says no. She will go her own
way then. Everyone will realize you still love her. JT brushes it off
but she says she knows what she is saying. Not even dead can you stop
loving her. But don’t worry, I don’t care about you anymore. Even my
love for you as my uncle is gone. JT asks her to take the jewelry off
at least. She says no, now she is becoming more fond of
them.

Cata goes to see Juliano. He does not want her near… She
brought the baby for him to meet him. Juliano is still very resented
against her, thinking she brought the baby to brag in his face that he
could not have a baby but she could. Come see it. Please. When Juliano
sees the baby and realizes it is black, he smiles ear to ear… Yes, it
is your son.. and mine.

The funeral is attended well by town..
Don Camilo and Sabio come by.. Jose maria asks Narino what are they
doing here. They came to offer their condolences. But then JT arrives
followed by his wife and servants. Lucia and Ines comment that he is
a jerk for showing up. Camilo offers his condolences… Sabio comes and
says ‘it has not been easy for you’ which Antonio confirms. The
marques tries to stop JT but JT shakes him off. JT and Antonio have a
face off momentarily. JT says he is so sorry. Antonio says I know, Mr
President, I know. JT caresses and embraces Mercedes briefly, then
reaches for Isabel but pulls back his hand, telling them he is sorry
for their mother’s death.. then he makes his exit quickly. Lucia and
Ines comment that Antonio can understand JT’s pain, he has just lost
the woman he loved and their daughters who will never know he is their
father.

Back to Juliano and Cata…
Juliano loves holding his
baby, healthy and strong, like his dad.
‘I am your dad’.. What did Amo Domingo say when he was born? Cata
tells him Domingo thinks the baby is dead… Juliano tells Cata the
obvious, if Domingo finds out he will kill the baby. Cata tells him
she has to go away for the baby’s safety and her own. Cata tells
Juliano, if her survives Domingo, know what life awaits the baby?
Slavery. Is that what you want for the baby? Of course not. Just met
him and I already feel bonded to him for life. Cata promises she will
find a way to bring him often to see his dad. Juliano does not want
her to be away from him either. He asks that Nicolasa forgive him but
it is true. Cata won’t let anything happen to the baby, no matter what
she must do. Juliano says she has changed, now she is a good woman.
She says he is a good man too, respectful, loving. Juliano says ‘but
black’. She says when she saw the baby for the first time, she did
not
notice his skin color, just saw his soul through
his eyes. Same happened to her with Juliano. Juliano says we don’t
have a soul. Now you are the mother of a child without soul. She is
planning to name it Joaquin, like her dad. He was a very good and fair
man. Juliano says Pola will also be happy of his name. Cata tells him
if you want to live for him, you have to start eating. He eats… That’s
better.

Pola and Viviano find Josecito and greet him. Josecito
asks why you never came to see me. Pola says Jose had told her they
did not want to see him. Josecito asks Pola if she knows Narino. She
is helping him right things around here. Josecito is glad, this
government is not good at all. The priest better not hear me or I will
be a week on bread and water. Pola asks do you like the religious
life? Josecito loves being able to help people. The only thing wrong
is that… what happened to the soldier you liked? Pola tells him she
will marry him. Josecito is happy, when they are totally
free. Pola says as soon as Don Antonio takes control over here.
Josecito is thrilled to see her in love. Josecito asks her about
Sierva, the girl he likes… but before they can answer the Padre
Contreras comes by and takes Josecito away, telling him the sin of
flesh is the quickest way to hell… Pola comments to V that Josecito
likes women too much for becoming a priest.

Rev tells Antonio
that Magdalena knew how critical she was but she faked feeling better
for Antonio, to let him do what he needed to do… Antonio is completely
moved.

Dona Maria Matea gives Antonio her condolences… He wants
her to write to her husband that he could use people like him… She
will. Bruno and Jose Maria say if you want to go home and be with
your family we will understand. But Antonio wants to begin
distributing the paper right away, otherwise Magadelena would never
forgive him.

Friday:

At Jorge T’s his wife nags him
about everyone watching him cry for Magdalena… JT slips that the
famliy forced him to marry her and not go with Magdalena. But he never
had the guts to go against their wishes. She says he is a coward,
that is why Antonio Narino will finish him.. and she will enjoy it..
JT yells that that won’t happen.

Pola is reading the paper to
the people…
A musician from Egypt dreamed that he played the arp
for a donkey. The musician did not understand the dream. The king did
not like or understand music, he listened distracted and ended up
ordering the musician to be taken away. The musician said no wonder I
dreamed that I would play for a donkey. … JT, Camilo are walking by..
a woman yells ‘Look! There goes the donkey!’
Jose Maria is reading
elsewhere..
‘we all know what the habits of a corrupt government
are… all the vices of the previous government continued. Our
revolution was not only necessary…’

Maria
Matea reads elsewhere…
‘It was fair. Very fair. But fairness of
the cause does not make things go fairly. What have we advanced with
living 100 or 200 more years of slavery…’
Pola:
‘ to get even
more dumb, to finish convincing us that the american and the african
was born to serve a bunch of europeans, because they learned to kill
and to deceive earlier than us.’
The people applaud Pola. Vivianito
asks why they are clapping. Pola says because I think they agree with
what it says here…. (Viviano leaves) Pola repeats the last line to
herself. How clear is it that Don Antonio writes… but I am afraid this
will give me some trouble with Alejo.

JT: He called me donkey.
How dare he calls me donkey?
(Camilo laughs) Camilo says it does
not say anywhere that it refers to him.
JT: No? ‘Al que le aplique
este cuentecillo que con su pan se lo coma’ (whoever this words apply
to, can eat them with their own food) He
refers to me! WHY wasn’t the donkey story included in the paper I
read before?
Cam: It was an incomplete copy, sir.
JT: Have to
lock him up immediately!
Cam: What do we accuse him of?
JT: What
do we accuse him of?? Of lying about the President! Of staining his
name! .. not only that, (and reads again from the paper, dated Sunday
14 July 1810) ..’he accuses us of a corrupt government. Of forgetting
the cause of freedom, of continuing under the spanish rule.’
Cam:
Yes, but it is not enough to lock him up. Narino is not Carbonell.
People would never forgive that. They are happy that someone says
everything Narino says in that paper!
JT: Are you saying that
everything that the paper says is true?
Cam: NO, mr Pres.. I am
saying that the people believe it is true.
Sabio: Sirs… if Narino
gets the people for him and against us, he can become very
dangerous.
JT: No, its not so critical. The fact that this leads
people to mock
me does not mean that they will (rips the paper) cut my
throat.

At the chicheria they all gather and cheer for Antonio
and against Spain.
Antonio says thank you for your support and for
supporting the paper, but we can’t kid ourselves. If we really want to
improve our lives, a simple paper will not be enough. A bad ruler,
known as President or King, does not have the right to make our lives
so miserable. What did we get the viceroys out? To let the people say
what they want. And if these new governors are not good either, they
will also have to leave!!
They continue cheering for
Antonio.
Don Ignacio: Does that mean that we will take the power
away from JML by force?
Antonio: That means that we will take the
power away from him. The power that belongs to the people. And if they
want to retain it by force, we will take it away by force!

JT
continues reading the paper… ‘things are worse now than when the
viceroys were
here.’ As if I was an idiot!
Sabio: The truth is that we have to
stop Narino.
Camilo: Why don’t we write letters saying this paper
is full of b-s, of ‘bagatelas’?
Sabio: Bagatelas… Of course, that
is why it is named La Bagatela. He named it with all the intention so
that if people complain that it is b-s, they claim that it is
precisely that.
JT: Those jerks are mocking us.
Camilo: IF we
had not set the right to press as a constitutional right, we could
force that paper to close.
JT: We have to take all measures to not
allow people to understand the meaning of this paper.
Camilo: And
what are those measures?
JT: We write a paper in which it is us who
finish him. We will rip off the walls all the papers of his. We will
buy whichever ones are still on sale, we will steal them if we have
to.
Sabio: Will all that be enough?
JT: Can you think of any
more?
Sabio: Well, when the government wants to ban something, it
has a pretty effective resource.
JT: What is that?
Sabio: The
taxes.

Pola congratulates Antonio… had a much better reaction
than they expected. She suggests he go home and rest. He does not want
to go home to think of her, of the things he did not tell her, of the
pain he could have avoided her. She reminds him his children need him.
He notices she is also worried. She says she is worried that Alejo
does not want to hear from her anymore for going against the king.
Antonio tells her she has to make a choice. Not easy with the two most
important things in he life. Antonio insists she has to make a choice.
Which one is more important?

In town, the papers are being
ripped off the walls.

Antonio gets home late and finds Tonito
sleeping embracing Mercedes… they are laying on the matt that
Magdalena died in… Antonio sends the girls to bed. Mercedes asks him
to promise he will stay home with them. He can’t promise that. When
the girls leave Tonito tells him the girls need him, we all need him.
Antonio says sorry but have to be in front of the paper.

At
Valencia’s Alejo says Gaspar found the piano, some paintings and some
vases.
Eusebia is very thankful to Francisco. Francisco takes the
credit. But Gaspar says some guards told him that the things did not
get taken by Tacon, that Francisco lost them playing cards instead.
Francisco laughs it off as a lie. HE uses Eusebia to brush it off as
silly talk. Francisco wants to accuse whoever said that. Maria Teresa
says that is not necessary. Francisco says it is.
Gaspar asks Alejo
if he is sure the new council will respect the authority of the king.
Alejo says of course, otherwise I would not be fighting with them.
This convinces Gaspar to want to be part of it. He wants to contribute
to the cause so this city will move forward the right
way.
Francisco passes on Eusebia’s invitation to also
join the council… its not his way. LOL

Cata makes it to the
slave pit to feed the baby again. She is very loving with the baby.
Bernarda can see that. Cata tells Bernarda that Juliano is happy and
even ate food. Bernarda is excited.
Cata says Juliano got sad when
she told him she plans to leave. Bernarda asks Cata if she is just
giving Juliano false hopes. Cata says my mom always said that the
bible says don’t worry about tomorrow’s issues, every day has its
own.

Pola, Jose Maria and Antonio are worried that all the
papers are off the wall, it is very costly to print each paper. That
since it was first edition they basically had to give them all away.
Pola is telling them that with the sales of the second one they will
recover the cost. But right then the soldier announcer announces that
there is a new tax on new papers, that the first 20 have to be given
to the government as tax.
Jose Maria and Pola begin yelling that it
is an
abuse.

At Antonio’s house, Tonito is trying to entertain the
girls, Mercedes asks that he take them to their aunt Ines house.
Tonito says don’t have permission for that. Mercedes asks him please,
we miss mom and maybe with aunt Ines we will feel
better.

Antonio tells Jose Maria and Bruno that the only way to
denounce the tax abuse with the paper is with the paper itself. But
they have no funds to print it. Bruno offers his savings as a loan, he
is certain that the 2nd edition will sell out. Pola asks how he is so
sure, Bruno’s own brother wants to buy 30 copies of the next edition
to take them back to Cartagena with him, the paper will be a success
there.

At Popayan, Baraya says the troop needs rest and water.
Colonel says they are lazy.
Alejo asks him if he thinks JTL is a
good President. Baraya says he is intelligent, educated, maybe he is
lacking a bit of character. Why the question. Alejo says there are
people in Santa
Fe who sound not pleased. There could be a riot. Baraya asks him who
said that. Alejo received a letter. Baraya says if that were true I
would have received orders to return. Colonel asks Alejo who is in
front of that ‘revolt’. Alejo says Narino. Colonel concludes correctly
that this is why they have not ordered Baraya to return, because he
would side with Narino. Alejo asks Baraya if that is true. Baraya asks
why is it so important to know. Alejo says he knows the answer, he who
has the weapons has the power. Colonel agrees. Whichever side Baraya
choses will win. Baraya is uncomfortable with being put on the spot
and says it is not about chosing a side. He agrees with Alejo, not
only respect the authority of the king, but consider that we owe
everything to Spain,
without it we would not be much. Otherwise,
he would support Narino to rule our destiny. Alejo asks if he means
that the troops would be fighting against Narino. Baraya says if
Narino insists in closing all doors with Spain, we will have no
choice. (Alejo is very concerned at this answer).

Antonio
returns home again to Tonito and the girls laying in Magdalena’s cot.
He is concerned.

Days later, Pola is reading the next paper.
‘it is well known that when you want to ban something that is not ban,
there is no simpler way than to load it with taxes. A tax of 20 copies
for the authors will disallow them from printing it. ‘
Elsewhere
Jose Maria is reading..
‘With this Bagatela, I wanted to shed some
more light over the times… but before I can sell just one copy, I have
to provide 20 copies to the government. In other words, 20 reales a
week. When at home I have no food, I have to pay 130 pesos a year. A
scary amount for a miserable paper, and even more for its
author.’
People clap and cheer to take down the government and in
favor of Narino.

At Jorge’s house, Camilo and Sabio are
telling him that people are upset… for this, the 2nd edition of La
Bagatela. In the paper Narino accuses them to charge unconstitutional
taxes on it. JT says he doesn’t care what Narino says, he now has a
great reason to close that darn paper. Camilo questions who will do
that since the people are angry. JT asks if they now fear Narino.
Camilo and Sabio share a concerned look.
JT: NOT I!! Go close that
paper immediately!! Let us confiscate the printing machine! So he
won’t be able to print any more!!
Camilo: NO, please! That would be
like putting the rope around our neck. For whatever reason, the people
agree with the ideas of Narino! And we can’t…
JT: Its not about
ideas, Don Camilo! Do you realize this is a personal matter?? Narino
hates me! He hates me for issues from the past. And he wants to finish
me off!
Sabio: Well, he is well on the way… he will achieve
it.
JT: Don’t bring me problems!! Bring me
solutions!!

At the place where Juliano works, Cata and Acacia
wonder where Ciro (lead slave) is. They will take their chances and
bring food to Juliano.

The girls visit Ines. She is happy to
see them. She is just worried Antonio does not see them at home.
Mercedes says her dad is too busy to worry about them. Tonito clears
up that Antonio is busy with the paper. He will be back for them in
the afternoon. We see pain in his face to have to leave them
there.

Sabio suggests to JT a solution… ‘if you can’t against
your enemy, join them’… Camilo thinks if Narino is part of their
group, he won’t be able to fight against them. JT is not so
convinced. He thinks Narino will enjoy having them close to continue
fighting them. Camilo wonders what Narino can do. JT says Narino has
the answer to that. But what job do you all think we should offer
him?
Sabio suggests President. JT is not amused. Do you want Narino
to come here
and kick all of us out? JT takes it on Sabio noting that he is not so
wealthy or has as many achievements as him. Camilo supports Sabio
Caldas idea. JT gets very angry and has a tantrum saying then let
Narino come and I will go!!

Ciro catches Catalina visiting
Juliano and bringing him food…

Tonito is sitting in town and
hears women gossip about Narino hating his wife and nor mourning her
at all… After what his wife did to him, he treated her bad and the
girls must have suffered so.

The junta offers Narino (after a
very wordy thankful reason) they name him ‘corregidor, governor of the
state of Cundinamarca, and intendent of justice, and also theater
judge..’ Narino turns them down saying not sure if you know that I am
leading a new paper… JT says since you are such a hard critic of our
decisions, maybe you can contribute to them… Narino then accepts… JT
says very well, don’t worry about your paper… Narino
says he will find time to continue with his work as lead of the
paper, even though they insist that he won’t have the time to do all
those duties. The people in the room applaud Narino’s decision to
accept but also continue leading the paper.

Ciro comes to
Domingo gossiping about seeing Cata coming to see Juliano and feeding
him, against his original orders. But Domingo thinks she is doing it
because of her guilt feeling about Nicolasa and the baby. Ciro insists
and Domingo takes it as offense and sends him off to work.

Pola
tells Maria Matea that Antonio got about 5 jobs… they want to keep him
busy… he accepted but he told them he would continue with the paper…
Pola tells MM that she enjoyed their faces when he said that… MM
laughs too.

Antonio gets home. Tonito tells him about the girls
being at Ines and wanting to spend the night there, Antonio says they
should be here with their dad. Tonito questions that… Antonio
says he promised their mother he would care for them. Tonito asks him
not to do it because he promised, but because he wants to. Because he
really feels they are his daughters, otherwise it is not worth it. He
also tells Antonio about the gossip he heard of the women in town
about him not being a good father. Antonio says ignore what people
say. Tonito says it is not easy. Antonio wants to hear what is said.
That there is no love here, only hatred. That you killed her with
resentment. That it shows how little you cared about her death, that
the girls must be suffering, etc.

JT is in his house resented
that he warned them it would not work. Camilo asks if he wants them to
take back the appointments? JT says that would be worse, it was a
public appointment! What will the people say if I back off? Don’t say
it… I know that I am the Lozano donkey to the people. Camilo still
says once Narino is part of the government, his comments in
the Bagatela will soften. JT doubts it. JT notices Sabio did not
come… he is not feeling well, not thinking well of me. I will quit.
Camilo asks not to do that, that will mean for sure that he was beaten
by Narino.
Antonio sits down to write the next paper… and is
writing a lovely essay about Magdalena.
‘Blessed be God for giving
man a companera and put in her the irresistible virtue to soften our
character and our disgraces…(remembers when Mercedes was born, lovely
scene) Who among us would not see our existence as a morbid gift if
the hand of a woman did not help us handle the burden? The world is an
illusion, and life itself is nothing but a dream, but the most
wonderful of all dreams is undoubtedly love. What price would glory,
honor, riches have for man, if it were not for the awaited reward in
the stares of beauty? Where does a man run to relieve his fatigue and
exchange the flowers for happiness… at the side of a partner, of a
friend, only she can fill the gap that ambition and sparkle leave…
That is how, beside my beloved, I gave myself to those reflections… we
used to take walks at the graveyard… You would ask.. the graveyard?
Walk among the graveyard with your beloved? Yes, this place where
everyone ends up in, infamy, age,
happiness and disgrace, the
fears and the hopes… Oh my beloved. You are now here in eternal
silence. How many times in this same place where I come now to water
your ashes with my tears, heard you announce this terrible moment of
separation to me. Now alone, among the shadows of the night, I raise
my trembling voice… Magdalena, dear half of me… respond to me, or make
the stone that covers you open and receive me in it… but it is in
vain. Magdalena is not here anymore, and I only live to miss/cry her.
(Pola continues reading the next morning).. Rest in peace, disgraced
woman. The time for tests is all over. Men can;’t do
anything against you now. The cold stone that covers you is an
inpenetrable shield where the shots of disgraced enemy crash on. Happy
if you had not left behind on earth the one who shared your sorrows
with you.
Maria Mag: That is a man who knows how to love a woman
truly, above anything else.
Antonio comes to pick up the girls…
Ines says what he wrote about Magdalena is beautiful. He says too bad
she can’t hear it. Ines says yes she can. Antonio agrees. The girls
want him to be with them. Mercedes is still afraid he will leave alone
sometimes.. He says sometimes, but they will never be alone. HE
invites Ines to live in the house with them, at least for a time. Ines
agrees.

Maria Magda gives Pola a letter where he says he misses
her so much, even the bones miss her. Some of them will head back to
Santa Fe soon, so Baraya can reinforce the protection there.
He
says that they both have made great sacrifices in the name of their
love.
But there are limits that men should not go by. Mostly those which
make us confront ourselves. So he begs her to abandon her fight beside
Narino. He knows that Narino could lead them all to perdition. If she
stays beside Narino she could be putting their relationship in danger.
… Pola is confused. MM says don’t blame him, he has the loyalty to the
king in his blood. The question is what will you do?

Antonio at
home with the girls… he promises he will spend more time with them. He
will not abandon them… they can even help him with what he is doing,
and he will find a way for them to help. But for now lets pray for
your mother… JT receives Sabio again and appologizes for what he said…
JT says his contribution is invaluable… They have to come up with
something to control Narino again. JT is not in agreement that the
wording of La Bagatela softened… and JT quotes a section of LB that
says Senor of La Contra BT.. it is you who is
lying. It is you who is inmoral. You give advise that you don’t
follow. I love Santa Fe as my country and will do whatever it takes to
fight whoever wants to stain it in that way. JT asks Sabio if that
sounds softer. Camilo comments that maybe Sabio refers to the writing
supplement he dedicated to his wife Magdalena… very moving, surely
those who thought that marriage was a war zone were wrong.
JT
suddenly changes the subject, does not want to talk about that, ‘it
will make me cry’. He doesn’t want a fourth edition of LB to come out,
no matter what we have to do…
But of course, days later, Pola
announces that LB no. 4 is out.
Let Spain recognize our
independence… Then we will be good friends. Friendship can only exist
among free men, and never between amos and slaves.

Jose Maria
is reading LB no. 5…
Watch out, americans. Watch out. The war they
will declare on us is more dangerous than the bayonettes and cannons.
We
are no longer colonials, but we can’t mention the word freedom
without being called insurgents.

We have not advanced much… We
have changed owners, but not conditions. The same titles, dignities
and privileges, the same vices…

Pola reads…
For European
Spain, freedom and independence means virtue. For the American spain,
it means insurrection and crime.

The mayor calls for Cata, he
has received a letter from Pola appologizing for not being here on the
day of birth. Had good reasons, begs to receive news of how it went…
And at the end of the letter asks if on the day of the birth the day
was clear or dark… Cata and Gertrudis leave, but Cata runs back and
tells Mayor to tell Pola that the day was dark and that the baby did
not die. The mayor is confused.
Previews seem to have Baraya and
the troops, including Alejo, back in Santa Fe and facing Pola and the
people.

La Fuerza del Destino #4 Fri 08/05/11 Esplendor in the Grass--At Least Till The Train Whistle Blasts

Capítulo 4

[My dvr cut off the last few minutes also, so I’m not quite sure where they ended things last night.--ed.]

Alicia has ironed Ivan’s clothes and brought them to him. She’s up for a chat and asks how the driving lessons went. More specifically, she wants to know if Maripaz has been rude to him. When Ivan says no, Ali says she mentions it because Maripaz has been pretty much a pain in the patoot with everyone else in the house.

Mari tells Judith she’s making progress with hunkalicious Ivan. She knows he’s attracted to her. Judi seems a bit scandalized and wonders if he’s dared to make advances. (At least that’s the drift I’m getting, not being up on the Valley Girl vernacular equivalent in Spanish). Naw, but she’s impatient [me canso] and she’s the one throwing herself at/ being daring with [aventarse] him. She likes him and thinks he’s fun, even if he is the servant’s son.

Lucia, meanwhile, whines to Mari because she can’t join her and Van the Man during those driving lessons. Lucia knows when to fold ‘em and leaves.

Later that day Van and Mari “take a break” during the lesson. The two walk and talk together. She tells him school and studying aren’t her thing. He says going on to college would make her more worldly and prepare her for a career if she wanted one. Mari snickers. Is he crazy? No way! She plans to marry somebody wealthy enough to maintain her in the style to which she’s become accustomed. She gets bored with the conversation and tells him to kiss her. He doesn’t think it’s a good idea. She gives him a peck on the lips. He figures she’s serious enough and decides to go with the flow. They kiss and kiss again. He starts to kiss her one more time but Mari ducks and heads back. He smiles. (Yep, ‘least he’s made it to first base.) He saunters back in his high tops and hoodie (no doubt hopeful of scoring a home run sooner than later).

At Casa de los Curiel, Celia stops by the kitchen for a private chat with Alicia.

Outside, Mari and Van pull up in the Jeep. She wants to make out in the front seat. He’s afraid somebody will see them. “—It wouldn’t be polite to refuse me and I love kissing you!” Smooch. “Love it!” Smooch. “--Love it!” No way the kid can resist.

Celia’s there to gripe at Alicia for getting involved with a married man…again. Alicia can’t help it and says she is in love with Don Gerardo. She believes he feels the same towards her, tho’ no, she doesn’t expect him to leave his wife for a maid. Well, Celia warns her against getting pregnant like the last time. Alicia is certain that Gerry is being very careful. (Oh sure! Anybody want to take that bet?)

Maripaz gets back to her room and calls Judi for a favorcito. She needs her to loan her her car for a day and then disappear for a while. Mari plans to tell her parents that she’s going with her and her other friends for a picnic in the countryside, but really she’ll be out with the Vanster. Judi’s game as long as Mari gives her all the juicy details afterwards.

Outside, Van and Gerry discuss engineering. Gerry was a civil engineer. He’d like to get back into it eventually, he says. Leandro arrives for an unexpected business meeting with Shrew-crecia (that’s a keeper, Sara!). Gerry and Leandro head inside to sit down with her. She sneerfully dismisses hubby Gerry with an imperial demand. (I grimace just looking at the hag. This broad definitely got hit with the wrong end of an ugly-fruit stick. Anybody else notice how her lips are frozen in a permanently sneery snarl every time she speaks? I can only imagine what it took for old Ger to get it up the two times he was at bat.) Gerry, not one to make a scene, heels immediately if not sooner. He waits outside in the driveway, tail between his legs and his head between his forepaws.

Lucrecia wants Leandro to take charge of administering the ranch. And hubby? She sniffs. Leandro’s got a better feel for things on the ranch. Leandro walks back out and says so long to Gerry.

Gerry now heads back inside to confront his wife about treating him like dirt in front of the hired help. She tells him Leandro’s now in charge of the ranch. “—But he can barely even write!” “—Well, you have no vision in running the ranch, despite all your learning.” “—You mean you’re firing me?” “—Let’s just say that now you’re free to spend your time doing whatever you like.” He complains to her about this being a major insult. She snarls back that hers and her daughters’ inheritance are at stake. “—So, I’m just a useless good-for-nothing. We should just get divorced-–and right away!” No chance, says Lu-Screechia because he wouldn’t want to expose the family to the kind of scandal that would cause. “--Leave the ranch, keep up appearances, but that’s all.  Divorce is not possible.”

Carlota wonders if her daughter’s lost her mind [perder el juicio] when she hears what her daughter pulled, insulting hubby Gerry that way! (Sort of makes you wonder what kind of man engendered the shrew-creature long ago. Perhaps Carlota was raped and had no choice but to keep the kid that came after.) Snarling Daughter whines that the ranch is not doing well financially. Heck, they can’t even afford to buy Maripaz a car, let alone send her back to private school in The States! Carlota loses it and let’s her Shrew-Baby have a piece of her mind. A car? Frivolous! As for school, Maripaz can go here! And, how can she be so sure that Leandro won’t steal from her??? Either way, says Shrew-crecia, they’ll earn more than with Gerry running things.

Mama doesn’t agree and says she’s the one who has the final say [usufructuaria/usufructuary=the one with the legal right to enjoy use or profits of something] til the day she kicks off. Snarl-Baby talks Mama C into going along with it by saying if it doesn’t work out she’ll ask Gerry to take the rancho over again. Carlota says only as long as she keeps a close eye on Leandro.

At the same time, Ivan’s playing with Pipo, his Doberman, when Mari comes out into the yard. She tells him the dog frightens her. Off goes doggy, who, supposedly wouldn’t hurt a fly. Mari flirts while he cautiously looks over her shoulder to make sure nobody sees the two of them together. She sweet-talks Van into meeting her in town where she’ll pick him up the next day for a drive and a picnic in the country.

The following day, Maripaz and Ivan meet up. They set up their picnic in a romantic and very secluded area by some lake. Mari pours a toast for themselves and her return home. They stare into each other’s eyes. He tells her how he missed her and how much he loves being with her. They toast. Salud! She tells him how especially romantic he sounds. It seems he cares for her. He says, well, actually, he does. “Same here. I like you a lot! You don’t know how much.” “—Likewise.” He lets himself get carried away while she kisses him all over and starts to undress him. He hesitates and then says he’s not got anything for protection [no soy preparado]. She tells him not to worry. The school in The States gave all their students contraceptives just in case [por si las moscas]. He still doesn’t know if they should go all the way. She asks if he wants to. Well sure! Well, she does too. Amid much panting and depantsing, young love and an abundance of hormones there is muchisimo esplendor in the grass.

A while later, as they’re walking back to the car, the two discuss what a great time they’ve had that afternoon together. (Uh, yeah!) Van, quite the gentleman, admits he’s feeling uncomfortable. (Perhaps the correct word here is guilty?) He doesn’t know how he’ll face her father the next time he sees him. Mari says, well hey, they’re young and have a right to do it. (Viewerville stops to wonder if that sentiment was part of the American private school’s sociology curriculum, or the writers’ take on American Education’s dedication to student self-actualization and/or cultivation of self-esteem in their young charges.) “--Besides, we love each other!” “—Really? You love me?” “—Yep! Lots!” She starts smooching on him, literally hopping up and on for another ride. Van may be still a bit too tame, but he’s definitely game. The camera fades away as the two have another round of red robin a-bob-bob-bobbin’ in the park.

That night at dinner, Lucrecia announces to dreamy-eyed Maripaz that regretfully, she won’t be able to continue studying outside the country. She, though, will be able to transfer to a university there to continue her studies. Mari says not a problem for her. She’d just as soon nix the college, anyway. She doesn’t enjoy school and sees no reason to go on since all she’ll be doing is getting married and having kids. Gerry and the others can’t understand the lackadaisical attitude. Carly insists it will help pass the time between now and when she finds a good husband and is finally ready to marry. “--But Grams, it’s just not my thing.” “--Oh? So you’re just going to laze around?” [andar de vaga] No, says Mari. She was thinking of learning tennis, decorating, whatever. Gerry insists she’s going to college but she gets her back up and says no! “—What? Are you going to chain me up and take me there? Send me and I promise I’ll flunk [trono] cuz I'll never even crack open a book!” (Well, that apple didn’t fall far from the tree, did it?)

After dinner, Gerry has a discussion with Shrew-crecia. With the ranch in financial straits, Maripaz is best off getting a degree in something useful, he says. Sorry, says Lucrecia. “--She’s always been obstinate [testaruda]. What do you expect me to do?” Well, say Gerry, convince her somehow. “--Well, if it’s so important, why don’t you try? Be useful!” He sniffs like tell me what you really think of me and says BTW, he’s not sleeping with her anymore. He’ll move into the spare room. [de tiliche] (Two decades to finally put his foot down to Screech-Creature here and all he can manage is to tell her he’ll move into the spare room?) “--And cause a scandal with the help? No way!” “--What does it matter? I am a useless nobody as far as you’re concerned.” [ser un cero a la izquierda= less than nothing, literally, left of the decimal point] They grouse over it a bit till she finally flounces out and says take their room! She’ll sleep with Mom! He gives her backside a well-deserved eye roll.

Carlota asks what’s up as Lu-screechia storms into her mama’s room. Lu-screechia says no way she’s going to allow the servants to find out Gerry and she aren’t sharing a bed any more. So she’s staying there a few nights till things blow over. Carly doesn’t want her there. “--My room is for me alone! And besides, I snore! [roncar]” No problem, says Screech as she steam-rolls over Mama. She’ll stick cotton in her ears. He’ll be over it in a while. The two agree that the only servant who’d know the change in sleeping arrangements will be Alicia since she takes care of the bedrooms. Lu-Screechia orders Mama tomorrow to tell Alicia to keep her trap shut! Carly warns that maybe the servants won’t catch on, but the kids surely will. “--Tell them it’s just Mom and Dad being angry again.” Carly sighs.

Carly warns her daughter that things are not fixed so easily. Why doesn’t she just face facts and get a divorce. “--Society doesn’t frown on it the way they did in my day. Heck, after a bit they forget about you.” “--NO!” And that’s the end of that!

Carly mentions in a fit of pique that she’s pissed that Mari refuses to go on to college and that to top it off Lu-Screechia has allowed it. “--This family’s become a disaster!” “—Like I can do anything about it! You tell me what to say to her! Tell me!” Point taken. Carly goes back to reading her novel. (Damn! It’s déjà vu all over again! Viewerville begins to question whether it’s watching a telenovela or reality T.V.)

Late in the evening after everyone’s gone to bed, Mari sneaks through the garden and over into Van’s room. He’s half undressed and finishing some homework. “—Oh, so this is your room.” “—Yeah, it’s adequate for the son of a servant.” She closes in, oozing of sensuality. She places sweet kisses on his face as she speaks to him. “—Yes, but it’s tidy and clean and that’s what counts.” Mari tells him about her decision not to go to college. He thinks that’s a bad idea. She is all over him. “--Well, that’s how it is. [ni modo]” He’s fighting the urge to screw her brains out. “—We can’t do this.” “--Well then, kiss me good-night!” He warns her this is crazy cuz somebody might see them. She taunts and teases. She throws him back onto his bed. “--Yeah, I’m crazy, but for you!” She coaxes and cajoles. He’s willing and the spirit is weaker with every passing second. She pouts up at him. “--You’re going to make me think you don’t love me now.” “—How can you think I don’t love you when you’ve been an obsession my whole life long?” “—Then show me!” He stops fighting. He begins to kiss back and they go at it like a couple of minks.

The next morning Leandro shows up at Juan Jaime’s hacienda to introduce himself and suggest they do a little bit of back-room bidnez. It would seem that Leandro is crooked as a dog’s hind leg and he’s got a proposition for Juan Jeil-me! (Achtung!) Everbody’s got problems with the drought. It’s made the possibility of a decent harvest pretty poor. Juan Jeil-me (Achtung!) agrees that he doesn’t have much access to water and that a well went dry to make things even worse. Leandro’s now administrator of the Curiel rancho which has an abundance of water; and Leandro’s always short of cash. For the appropriate amount of greased palm Juan Jeil-me (Achtung!) could have all the water he could use. Is he interested? JJM asks if the other rancho will be affected at all. Leandro assures him it won’t. The one thing it’s got more than enough of [salta y sobra] is water. Ok. JJM is in. “—How much do you want for this little favor?”

In town, Ivan and BFF Camilo are unloading produce. Cam wants to know if he and the rich babe have gotten it on [conchabar= to mixed it up] yet. No, there’s no romance and no, they aren’t doin’ the deed, he answers. (A gentleman never tells, remember?)

Back at the rancho, Gerry tries talking sense to Mari about having wasted her schooling in the U.S. since it’s been all for naught without her continuing on to college. She only knows half of what she should. Mari insists she knows enough. Besides, she feels superior to the rest of the kids in her crowd and that is what counts. With what she knows she’s bound to get a decent husband. Gerry gives up and changes the subject. “—How are the driving lessons?” Mari says great, but they’re not needed now. She’s doing fine.

In another part of the house, Carly finds Ali making beds. She explains the new family estrangement arrangement and asks for her complete discretion. Alicia can be trusted.

At the club (?) Mari lets Judith in on all the juicy details with Ivan, The Hunk with Muy Prime Junk. She brags that she’s got him eating out of her hand. They met up, they had wine in a secluded part of the park, they kissed and then….they made love! “--He’s passionate, hot to trot, [fogoso=ardent, burning with desire] and with a body that drives me crazy! [volverse loco]” Jud asks how long she plans to go out with him. Mari says till she gets tired of him, but really, she thinks she feels something for him. Jud is scandalized impactada. “--But he’s a servant’s son!” “--Yeah, but when you come down to it, he’s a man—a man who’s worth the trouble!!” [vale la pena]

Back at Casa Carlota, Gerry finds Ali in the kitchen and tells her he’s stopped sleeping with his wife. He is ready to get a divorce. Van walks in on them. Gerry quickly changes the subject to looking for him and needing to tell him Mari no longer thinks she needs driving lessons. Van agrees. Gerry says fine, then he’s relieved of duty.  Gerry exits stage right.   Once he's gone, Ali tells Van she’s glad to hear it because she’s always worried Maripaz will get upset with him about something and then Sra. Lu-Screechia will get on their case about it. Van says no problems so far….

On his way back to his room, Mari grabs Ivan and pulls him behind the bushes. No more driving lessons since she can come and see him in his room. He’ll miss their chats. They’ll talk in his room. But he wants to be with her every day. She’s not going anywhere. He tells her he’s in love with her. They start another hot and steamy smooch fest as Lucia is crossing through the back yard and spots them. Ivan realizes she’s seen them and races after her. Mari’s afraid Lucia will spill the beans to Mama.

Ivan catches up to Lucia. He’s sorry she had to see them. He explains he’s always had a thing for her big sis. Now they’re going steady. He loves Maripaz. She doesn’t understand how he could love Mairpaz after the way Mari’s always treated him. (How to explain to a 13 year old that a guy at that age is a glutton for punishment when good sex with a hot chick who wants it all the time is involved? Heck! Maripaz is a college guy's wet dream come true!) Lucia woefully tells the Vanster that she wishes he were in love with her instead of her sister and then races away. He stops to file that fact away for later consideration cuz Mari walks up to him to ask if she’s planning to tell Mama. He hopes not, but doesn’t know for sure. Mari races off after her kid sis to do some major damage control.

Mari finds Lucia crying in the bedroom and convinces her that if she tells their mom then Ivan will be the one to get hurt. He and his mother will be kicked out and run off. Alicia will lose her job and Ivan won’t be able to finish college. Lucia will end up ruining his life. Lucia asks why her sister had to fall for [fijarse] him of all people! Cuz Lucia is in love with him! Mari says she understands, but Lucia’s still very young. She and he are older and at the age where you go steady. They just sort of happened to click and that’s the way it is. She has to promise not to tell Mama or their abuela–-not anybody--about the two of them. Lucia agrees but she’s done with Ivan for good!

Mari rolls her eyes and races back to Ivan’s room. “--I got her convinced to stay quiet.” Ivan says he’s been thinking and he wants to tell her dad about them. She tells him he’s crazy and reminds him it’s Mama who wears the pants in their family. Van is excited though and continues. He doesn’t understand why it would be a problem since he’s got good marks [promedio] and a scholarship [beca]. He is sure he’ll be able to be a good provider. Mari says, even so, that’s a way’s off and for now they’d do better just to keep things on the down-low like they are. Later on, if that comes to pass, they’ll discuss it again. The Vanster says he doesn’t feel comfortable sneaking around like this, tho’. They can't do it this way forever.  “--Ok. Fine. We’ll call it quits.” Mari walks to the door and starts to leave. Ivan shuts it before she can walk through it. “—I can’t live without you!” They kiss again and the passion runneth over: they do it in the park; they do it on his bedroom floor; they do it here and they do it there; they do it everywhere. Finally they get wise and do it in his bed, too.

One morning Carly tells Gerry and Lu-Screechia that they’ve been invited to a friend’s anniversary party. Screech is all for that, why the best families in the region will be invited. Gerry refuses to go. He’s not about to lend himself to the ruse that they’ve got a happy marriage, he says, and storms out of the room. “—What’s the matter with him? Always has to make my life difficult!” Carly snickers. “--That’s the pot calling the kettle black!” [‘The burro talking about ears’/ El burro hablando de orejas] Lu-Screechia tries talking Mama into going with her instead. Carly doesn’t care to sit for hours and listen to gossip, but since she agrees it’s been a dog’s age since they’ve been invited to a social event, she says fine.

Meanwhile, Alicia and Gerry have lunch together in the spare room over the garage. He tells her he’s planning to move back to the city and work again as an engineer in some construction company with his friends. He asks Ali to go with him. Her first thought is for her son, but Gerry reminds her that Ivan’s fully grown now and can get on by himself. Besides, she’s not the only one who would have to leave loved ones behind. There’s the matter of his two daughters. But then, there’s a construction company in town (Alamos?) where he could probably find work, also. Ali seems to think it’s a marvelous idea, either way. She gets up from the table and suddenly feels sick. She blames it on something she ate. He can’t stand the thought of her being sick, he says, and then professes his great love for her once more.

A bit later while clearing away Carly’s dishes, Ali asks for a few days vacation. She’s never had any time off and explains that she promised to attend some holiday affair with her co-madre, Celia, and she’ll be away three or four days. Carly says it’s a good idea to take some time for herself. Ali says thanks and she’ll leave first thing in the morning. Not to worry. Carly will inform her daughter about it. Ali looks unsteady on her feet.

After lunch Carly and Lucia have a nifty little chat about love and marriage. “--Mom and Dad are still fighting?” Yep, says Carly. Lucia tells her that she always thought that when people were in love and got married that love would last a lifetime. Carly opines that sometimes it does, but most times it does not. Well, in true novella heroin form, she says she will only marry for love and will love her man her whole life long.

Across the way, Ali and Gerry get together again so she can tell him she’s taking a few days off and will be away with Celia. He says it sounds great. She asks if he’s gotten that job yet. No, the man hasn’t made up his mind. Gerry’s thinking of starting his own business in the meantime, contracting for repair work in town, tho’ he knows his wife will scream to high heaven when she and her friends find out. Ali says so what? He has a right to do what makes him happy. He agrees.

Outside in back again, Mari is frantically looking for Ivan. She finds him studying there for a test. She’s practically in tears and says she needs his help, that perhaps his mother knows somebody. “--Somebody for what?”  "--I'm pregnant!" Ruh-roh! (Those must have been sugar-pills that American school nurse gave her. Or, maybe she decided to tune out when they were explaining how to use them.)  Van is “Come-again?” impactado. As the screen fades to dark, he appears to be imagining himself stuck at the crossing on the railroad tracks of life, having just heard the freight train’s whistle blow.

Teresa Fri 8/5/11 #110 Viewerville holds its collective breath while our beloved Sharkita fights for her life.

HOSPITAL: Sharkita’s fanclub is all there and they pounce on Hector for any news on Tiburoncita. He was able to get the bullet out of her chest but the one lodged in her neck is too close to the spinal column and they can’t extract it until the inflammation goes down. The good news is that the chest wound was close to her heart but it wasn’t damaged (most likely cause it was such a small target). He’s concerned about her head wound but can’t give a definite prognosis. The next 72 hours are crucial. Arturo’s not allowed to see her yet, she’s still in recovery. Hector will let him know. She’s stable but her condition is still critical. They’re all impactados.

Meanwhile, in the recovery room, Mariano is hovering over Teresa, cheering her on, telling her to keep fighting, to think of all the life she has yet to live. She has to survive so she can be happy…..even though she won’t be at his side. He cries as he tenderly kisses her forehead. He once thought the worst that could happen would be that she would leave him for Arturo’s money. Even then, he was comforted by knowing she loved him still. However, now that he sees she was willing to give her life for Arturo, it’s clear to him Arturo is the one she loves. It pains him to know he no longer has a chance with her. Aurora is standing at the door and has heard everything he’s just said. He wipes away the tears as she approaches him. It’s painful to see him like this and to see Teresa in her critical state. What matters to him is that Teresa recovers. Aurora says the prognosis is not good. Mariano has read the reports but no puede ser! He knows the bullet is very close to the spinal column but she can’t be a quadriplegic. She just can’t. Teresa will recover all of her mobility and she will be ok. She has to.

In the lobby, Arturo is giving Margarita’s info to the police and Cutberto is comforting Juana by telling her Teresa always comes out ok. Hector comes by just then and Juana runs to him, throwing her arms around him as he informs her of Teresa’s condition. Cutberto is left forgotten in the corner as Juana sobs on Hector’s shoulder. Cut cuts his losses and leaves. Juana cries to Hector about the hospital costs now that Arturo is bankrupt. No one has any money. Hector tells her there are more important things to worry about now. They have medical insurance and whatever’s remaining will be arranged there at the hospital. He tells her they need to wait at least 3 days to see how she progresses. Everyone heals differently. She’s young and strong and it’s evident to him that she’s fighting the good fight. He considers it a miracle she’s still alive.

In the recovery room, Aurora tells Mariano he needs to face the possibility that Teresa may not recover movement from the shoulders down. (eeek!) Mariano refuses to believe this and has been in contact with neurosurgeons at other hospitals. Aurora agrees they will do whatever is possible to help her but it’s their responsibility to advise Arturo and her family of the possibility and the changes this brings about. He knows this but also thinks of how the shots weren’t meant for her. He curses the minute she decided to protect Arturo. Aurora tells him she would have done the same for any loved one in danger. He can’t think of how she’d react to being a quadriplegic. He’s sure she’d prefer death to being bedridden or trapped in a wheelchair.

In the lobby, Arturo urges Refugio to take it easy. Refugio and Armando plan to stay there until they are able to see her. They can’t possibly go home just to worry about her. It’s best for them to stay put. Arturo convinces them to at least go to the cafeteria and he’ll join them later.

RECOVERY: Mariano resumes his pep talk, telling Teresa to think about doing the things she likes, etc. etc. Something beeps on a monitor which is apparently a good sign because he cheers her on.

LOBBY: Luisa and Fernando join Arturo. She asks him to join them in the cafeteria for a bit to eat. He refuses to leave and urges them to go on because Fernando has to eat since he donated blood. Fernando tells him not worry, he’d do anything for him or Teresa. Luisa asks about Saenz’ wife. Arturo has already talked to the police and they’ve opened an investigation. Luisa offers to stay while he takes care of it. What if that woman is crazy and returns to harm him? He feels they could help by going over all the accounts and debts. In the meantime, he’ll go to Hector and get an update. They leave and here comes trouble, by the name of Aeeeeeeeeeeeeda. She sneaks around the corner and comes up to Arturo, asking about Teresa’s condition.

DOCTOR’S LOUNGE: Mariano explains to Magda he is reviewing Teresa’s case and sending all her x-rays and graphs to his professors for their opinions. Magda wonders why he’s doing this since Hector is considered the expert. Mariano understands but says it never hurts to get other opinions. Magda says Aurora is also very worried. He realizes she hasn’t rested but neither has he. She suggests he go home and she’ll call him with any news. Of course, he refuses and picks up her rounds instead. As Magda leaves, “HOLA, HOLA!” Here comes Aeeeeeeda wondering why she hasn’t been able to reach him via cell. He tells her he’s been busy and has the watch tonight. She knows it isn’t his turn tonight then accuses him of staying only to keep watch over Teresa. Oh, sister, you are on seriously thin ice. He sees she’s heard the news. She has and complains she had to hear it from a third person and not from him. He’s sorry but this is going to be a tough day. Because of Teresa, she asks. She reminds him he’s a pediatrician, a children’s doctor. He has no business being here with Teresa. Now she’s starting to shriek. Juana called him in an emergency. Great, fantastic, she says, but now she’s in Hector’s hands along with many other specialists in this hospital. He has no reason to stay. Uh-oh, he’s standing up. “You’re right, he says. “And I’ve wanted to talk to you in person precisely because of what happened to Teresa. It’s made me realize……..” He’s interrupted by Magda saying there’s an emergency with one of Ledesma’s patients. He runs out and Aida is furious. As he’s rushing through the hall, Magda stops him and tells him it was all a ruse to get him away from his furious novia. He can’t believe she did that. She tells him to give Aida a chance to calm down and then tells him she kinda agrees with her. He realizes he forgot about everything after Teresa’s emergency. She calls this the “Teresa effect” but Aida doesn’t need to know this. He denies he’s planning to get back with Teresa. He also admits he cares for Aida, but…….. “no buts,” says Magda. He needs to consider this carefully and give himself this chance for happiness.

HOSPITAL CHAPEL: Armando and Refugio are in the chapel praying for Teresa. Refugio’s distraught and Armando convinces her to take care of herself, take her meds, get some food so Teresa will see her well.

ROAMING THE HALLWAYS, Aiiiiiiiiiiiiida catches up to Mariano, apologizing for her reaction and her jealousy. He understands but says they need to talk. No, no, no, no, says Aiiiiiiida. It was only a moment. She’s had a chance to think and everything’s ok now. So he can go ahead and work, they’ll meet later, have a little dinner and he can distract himself from everything. Ok, mi amor? Smoochie, smoochie. Aurora witnesses the smoochies.

I saw you crying in the chaaaaaaaapel: Aurora ends up weeping in the chapel next wondering why things have to be this way but then asks La Virgencita to help Teresa recuperate. She also prays to be released from this love she has for Mariano. She’s crying in the chapel when Martin steps in to comfort her. She thinks of how horrible it is to know how fragile life is. Today, you may have everything, and now they don’t even know if Teresa will be alive tomorrow. Martin kneels with her and embraces her as a lone saxophone plays in the cold Mexico night.

HECTOR’S OFFICE: He’s consulting with Hernan about Teresa’s condition. They’re not sure she’ll make it through the night. He hasn’t even told her family of the possibility of paralysis. He prefers to take it step by step. Aurora’s taking it a lot harder than he thought she would. He allowed her in the O.R. if only to hold Teresa’s hand and talking to her. Hernan is ok with that but disagrees about not telling the family. Arturo should be told. Hernan asks about Juana and Hector tells him she’s taking it badly also since she thinks of Teresa as a daughter. He mentions the return of Cutberto and how he hasn’t given up on Juana. When the time is right he’ll speak to Juana on the subject of Cutberto.

SPEAKING OF JUANA, she runs into Cutberto eating a torta in the lobby. She tells him he can leave and she’ll notify him of any change. He accuses her of fearing Hector’s reaction should he find him there. He tells her not to worry or feel guilty. She can tell el bigotón he’s there for Refugio and Armando then he walks away.

RECOVERY ROOM: Aurora brings Arturo to check in on Teresa. He speaks to her and talks of living their life together once this is all over. He can’t believe he ever doubted her love. He always knew he’d do anything for her but he never thought she’d be ready to risk her life for him. He loves her and he’ll never stop appreciating this sacrifice. His life is hers forever. Para Siempre. He weeps.

LOBBY: Hector sees Juana and tells her there’s no change but this can be a good thing. As long as she continues to fight to live, that’s enough for now. He asks for Arturo and finds out he’s with Teresa. Then he asks about Cutberto. Juana hastily tells him she’s promised to advise him of any changes, just as she will for anyone at the vecindad. She makes sure he knows Cutberto is with Refugio and Armando. Hector tells her he knows Cutberto is here because of her. He knows Cutberto loves her and he’s not blaming her. She’s the only one who can decide who will be by her side. She asks him not to pressure her at this time. He apologizes for bringing it up now but he couldn’t help it. He suggests she get some rest. Arturo walks up just then and asks that as the Hospital Director, Hector allow him to remain by Teresa’s side while she’s in intensive care. After Hector points out it’s against regulations, Arturo begs him to let him stay.

CASA BARRERA: Luisa and Fernando have been working on Arturo’s papers (insurance, etc). Fernando’s worried she’s been working too hard. She’s very worried and wants to call Arturo. Fernando reminds her she called just 30 minutes ago. She’s overwrought with worry over Teresa and what may happen to Arturo should the worst happen. He tells her to have faith and promises he will take care of her and Arturo.

TAQUERÍA: Aida sees Mariano is distressed and hasn’t touched his food. Mariano tells her he wants to have “THE TALK”. She avoids it and keeps interrupting him but it’s no good. Everything that happened today brought back so many memories for him. They’ve had a great time but he realizes he can’t give her what she wants or deserves. It’s best they end their relationship now. No, no, no – Aida doesn’t know what he’s talking about. He tells her he’s thought about it all day. It’s no use to continue when it’s not leading anywhere. She still says no, they’ve come such a long way and have had such a good time together. They both agreed to try. He agrees but says he realized today he can’t offer her anything more and prefers to tell her once and for all. She’s still not accepting it. She realizes he was angry because she nagged him about tending to Teresa but that doesn’t mean this has to end. She trusts him. Then he lowers the boom, telling her that in this case, her jealousy is justified!! She’s a beautiful, intense woman and she doesn’t deserve a partial love. She tells him she should be the one to decide that. She’s very happy with him and she knows he’s happy too. She knows that! Oh, this is not going well. He tells her he does care for her and will always be grateful for all those beautiful moments they shared but she deserves someone who will love her with the same intensity. He apologizes and says he doesn’t wish to hurt her. Now she starts a scene, standing up and raising her voice – she will never forgive him! Look what he’s giving up and for what? With Teresa, he will never have anything! And, just like that she rushes off.

CAFETERÍA: Martin and Aurora speak about Teresa’s situation and speak of how we never know when it’s our time to die. He wants to talk seriously with her. They’ve dated for months now and each day he loves her more. Life’s too short and he doesn’t want to miss the opportunity of enjoying it with her. And then he pops the question! He wants to marry her ASAP – tomorrow, well, not tomorrow but what about the day after tomorrow. Fine, he’ll give her enough time to find a dress. He’s so cute. Aurora smiles that beautiful smile at him. He knows he’s being impulsive but she inspires him and now he realizes she needs time to think. Oh, she’s thinking alright. She’s having a flashback to that scene with Mariano at Teresa’s bedside and he’s lamenting the fact that he no longer has a chance with her because she loves Arturo. She turns to Martin and says she has nothing to think about and accepts his proposal. He’s shocked, checks to make sure he heard correctly, then kisses her. Awwwwwww
He suddenly pushes away from her saying he needs to rush to the safe in his office. When she asks if he’s accustomed to having engagement rings in his safe, he jokes there was a sale for a dozen rings but he happens to have only one left. He gets serious and confides that he bought that ring after their third date because he realized then she was THE ONE. He rushes off, telling her to stay put.

CASA BARRERA: Luisa explains Arturo will spend the night at the hospital. They talk of Arturo’s sadness. Fernando can’t think of anything happening to Luisa and says that’s why it’s important to always tell each other they love each other. They also agree to postpone all wedding plans until Teresa is out of danger. Cue La Madre Más Odiosa talking on her cell phone about wedding plans. She sees their faces and ends the call. Luisa tells her of Teresa’s hospitalization and Fernando explains their wish to suspend the wedding plans.

CAFETERÍA: Martin has returned but Aurora has fallen asleep at the table. He doesn’t wake her but pretends to have a conversation with her as he places the ring on her finger, promising his love. Very cute.

CASA DE BARRERA: Luisa has explained everything to Oriana and Fernando tells her he donated his blood. Oriana’s not pleased by this revelation. He explains Arturo is in a desperate state. Oh, the well of Oriana’s odious audacity is infinitely deep. She comments this is no coincidence, this is divine punishment.

RECOVERY: Juana’s been allowed in Teresa’s room. Wait, before her mother? Oh, well. She tells Teresa how she loves her as a daughter and begs her to wake up. She remembers when Teresa was little, many thought she was her mother and she confesses she was proud to be seen as her mother.

GENOVEVA’S HOUSE: Aiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiida flies in screeching about Maldita Teresa, telling Geno that it’s all that Rrrrrrrata’s fault that Mariano has ended their relationship. She hopes Teresa dies! Whooo…….now who’s mala? Geno’s surprised at Aida’s reaction to the breakup. She’s surprised to hear that Aida has fallen in love with him. They speak of Paulo and how much they each loved him and how they both wished they had also died.

HOSPITAL: Juana thanks Hector for allowing her to visit with Teresa. He’s sure that hearing her voice will help. He hasn’t spoken to Arturo but will do so in the morning, when Arturo is calmer. He’s through for the night and offers her a ride home but she prefers to stay with her compadres. He leaves and Mariano walks up and comforts her, telling her Teresa will need all of them. He is going to see her now and Juana reminds him of his promise not to cause further problems. She warns him Arturo is in the room with Teresa.

CAFETERÍA: Aurora wakes up to find everyone has gone except her and Martin. She’s embarrassed and he jokes they’ll have a great anecdote to share with their children about the night he proposed and their mother fell asleep. She asks him to promise he’ll always make her laugh. She likes that he always sees the bright side of everything. She sees her ring. They kiss.

GENOVEVA’S: Geno comforts Aida. She tells of how she learned so much from Mariano after he saved her life on that bridge. He helped her see the world in a different light and she ended up falling in love with him. Why, oh why did she fall in love with him? Geno comments that Mariano has now ended it but there are divine punishments. Through clenched teeth, she says that what happened to Teresa is a punishment for everything she put them through. Whaaaaa? Aida has a demented look on her face.

MORNING AT THE HOSPITAL: Eeeeewww, Oriana is waiting for Arturo. She’s brought him a change of clothes. He’s surprised to see her there since she doesn’t like Teresa. She tells him it’s one thing to dislike Teresa and quite another to see him suffer. She’s here to comfort him as his mother might have. This reminds her of the tragedy suffered by his parents. Arturo knows this will not end the same. Teresa will survive. She asks how she can help. Just being here with him is enough and he hopes that someday she’ll accept Teresa because she is his life. She rants on about how these are difficult times because of Teresa’s condition, his financial woes and the scandal that will result because of this tragedy. She’s called some friends in the media who have promised to keep this covered up because of Luisa’s and Fer’s engagement. She offers financial assistance and he tells her that’s the least of his worries right now. He’d be willing to give up everything in exchange for Teresa’s well-being.

ELSEWHERE IN THE HOSPITAL: Mariano has told Dad about the breakup. Dad wants to make sure he doesn’t fall into another problem because of Teresa. Mariano is ready to move on with his life. He couldn’t go on deceiving Aida or himself. As long as he’s happy, Ramon is happy. They turn to leave when Arturo walks up looking for Hector and then asks Mariano if it’s true Teresa could end up a quadriplegic. Mariano wants to know who told him that. Arturo’s not messing around. He grabs Mariano by the collar and asks again, is it possible Teresa will end up a quadriplegic? Mariano responds that yes, Teresa could end up paralyzed for the rest of her life.

¡¡¡No..Puede..Ser!!!

Cuando Me Enamoro #78 Friday 8/5/11 Investigation, Jubilation, and Possible Ruination

Skipping the overhang from yesterday, Nata and Jero anguish in their respective bedrooms. Jero still loves Nata and it kills him to not have her. Nata cries that it hurts her so much to love Jero; it has to end. She wants Jero out of her life once and for all.

Matias and Adriana slog through mountains of paperwork at the office. They take a break and get down to gossip. Adriana asks Mat what he's going to do now that Berta has lost her baby. Especially since it could have been either his or Jero's. Mat wants a divorce but not until the time is right. It would look pretty bad if they got divorced immediately after the miscarriage. Berta calls Mat a prince for sacrificing so much for his family. She wishes she had a guy like him in her life. Mat is flattered.

Gonzo has Regina on his mind and there's nothing he can do to stop it. Not that he wants to. He loves Regina and desperately wants to see her. Beth the Secretary interrupts his daydreaming because he's expected at a meeting.

Cata and Ines wave to Andrecito and Isidro through the hospital window. He gets to go home tomorrow! Ines asks Cata to help her make some sweets that Andrecito likes so much. Of course, she'll be over to help tonight. Ines thinks that tonight will be Regina's opportunity to be alone with Gonzo.

Antonio meets Regi at a café. Regi has made a decision. The love between them has faded. At least it has from her end of the relationship. She tried to love him - she really did! But she just can't do it. Tony asks Regi who she does love, though he already knows the answer. Regi says that it is none of Tony's business. She tried to make it work but everything fell through. Sorry, Tony, it's over. Tony tears up as he takes the ring back.

Back at La Bonita, Jero congratulates Matilde and Carlos on their engagement. Mati still says there's no guy more handsome than Jero. Carlos teases that he's grateful that love is blind. Carlos and Jero sneak off into the office so Jero can read the autopsy results. Jero is astounded. "This mean that my brother didn't commit suicide?! Rafael was murdered!"

Everyone at Empresas Monterrubio is at a meeting. The books still won't cook. Adriana remembers an investment they made in boats that were supposedly owned by the company but actually aren't. Gonzo is sure that Blanca was behind it. Honorio hangs his head. Gonzo wants a full-scale investigation started on any account Blanca so much as breathed on.

Carlos says that the report means that the bullet that shot Rafa had to have come from another person. Jero is determined to find out who did it and make him/her pay. He can't sit still he's so worked up over Rafa's murder. Jero knew he Rafa wouldn't have killed himself! Jero thinks Roberta might have been the shooter. She came to give dump him, gave him the letter, and then killed him! Carlos thinks it might have been Agustin. He hated Rafa and wanted his vineyard. They also suspect Doc Vodka was complicit in Rafa's death.

Nata tells Constanza that the next morning she has an appointment with a divorce lawyer. Coni has noticed that Augie has feelings for Nata. What does Nata feel for him? Nata can't open her heart to another guy right now. She's still healing. But she is done with Jero for good. There is just too much distrust between them. Coni can relate because of her problems with Honorio.

Now it's Nata's turn to ask how Coni feels about her guy-in-waiting. Coni still isn't sure how she feels about Chema; she just likes spending time with him because he makes her feel alive. Despite their differences, they still have a lot in common. Nata feels the same way about Augie but it is not love. Coni thinks it could be love eventually. Giving it a chance would be better than closing the door to love forever.

All Empresa employees pour over the files to search for discrepancies. Daniel texts Blanca information about what's going on. She calls Honorio to tease him. "Want to go on a boat ride, mi amor?" Enough playing games! Honorio could have her arrested for what she's done to the company - fraud, money laundering, and certainly other crimes they haven't found out about yet.

Honorio suddenly remembers Blanca having given him the boat account and he trusted her enough to sign it without reading it. He looks like he is about to be sick. Blanca is less than worried by Hon's threats. She just wants to get him in her bed. Hon hangs up and fumes that Blanca set him up.

Jero asks the La Bonita employees if they saw anyone on the grounds the day Rafa died. No one knows but Manuela suspects that Augie and Doc Vodka were in it together. Mati hopes Karina will be free from the Doc forever now. Jero asks them to keep quiet about the investigation.

Augie gets home to find Selene waiting in his bed. They lock lips.

Antonio foams at the mouth over Regina breaking up with him. "I can't let you to shut me out of your life! I have to find your daughter so you will have to come back to me." Tony has the emotional maturity of a 16 year old.

Gonzo arrives at Regina's place. It worries Regi that both of Gonzo's daughters hate her so much. Not only does it upset his daughters but it also causes a barrier between herself and Gonzo. Regi knows that Gonzo's marriage is a farce. She has finally listened to her heart: She loves Gonzo.

Gonzo is over the moon. His feelings for Regi never stopped. She tells him she broke it off with Tony. Regi is free to love the man who truly owns her heart. She kisses him and Gonzo passionately kisses back.

Fina gets home from the hospital to pick up some clothes for Berta. She calls Gustavo (?) and admits that she is Pepa. He says he wants money - lots and lots of money. He has proof that one of her daughters isn't really hers. Fina nervously agrees to pay handsomely for the documents that could incriminate her.

Doctora Marina checks in on Berta, who is doing better. She asks Berta about Jero having asked for a DNA test on the baby. Marina didn't tell Jero that the baby was lost weeks ago but if Berta's husband asks about the miscarriage, Doc has to tell him the truth.

Regi leads Gonzo into her bedroom. The lights go out and we see their silhouettes kiss.

Augie texts Nata a goodnight message while in bed with Selene. Nata lays down in bed and remembers cuddling with Jero after his accident. She has to rebuild herself and move on. Meanwhile, Jero jolts awake from a nightmare. "Rafa's death was a murder, Renata. None of this should have happened." He writhes about how wrong he was. He hopes everything gets resolved soon - for Rafa's sake and for Nata's.

Selene is spitting mad that Augie is texting Nata. He's supposed to be with her. Augie doesn't get why Sele is in such a snit. Their relationship is about sex and nothing more. Sele can't believe she fell for a guy who behaves the same way Berta does - a total user. Augie says he would like to meet Berta.

Berta has nothing nice to say to Fina when she arrives with fresh clothes. It's still Fina's fault she lost the baby in the first place. Berta is starting to hate Fina; she is destroying Berta's life. Fina looks hurt for a moment. Well, as hurt as a woman who has no heart can look.

Gonzo and Regina are all smiles and giggles as she shows him to the door. He promises to have a word with Nata so that she'll agree to have a talk with Regi. They kiss and are both lost in love with each other. Yay!

Adriana and Matias are asleep in each others arms on the couch. Aww. They both zonked out while working overtime on the file search. Adri loves being by Mat's side and he's pretty happy about it too. Honorio brings them some coffee and they detach themselves.

Gonzo calls Mat for an update. Mat says the company is in worse condition than they thought. Gonzo is all rainbows and sunshine. "Don't worry about it! Everything will work out!" Mat's puzzled by Gonzo's good cheer.

Regina dreams of her encounter with Gonzo but Cata knocks on the door and interrupts. Regi gets a text from Gonzo. He loves her, it was the best night of his life, etc. Regina doesn't mention the text to Cata but she does tell Mami Dearest that she broke up with Tony. Regi isn't in love with him. Nothing is going to change her mind. Cata is left stuttering in shock.

Nata tells the lawyer that she wants a divorce because of irreconcilable differences. The lawyer says all she needs to do is have the papers delivered to Jero and then set up an appointment. Augie enthusiastically shakes the lawyer's hand like he just won the lottery. Nata isn't so excited.

Chema tip-toes into the centro kitchen and surprises Coni. He understands that she still has Honorio on her mind but he still wants to show her a good time. Chema leads her out for a secret date.

Cata refuses to talk to Regina during breakfast. Regi explains her reasons again. Cata is disappointed in Regi for fooling around with a married man.

Tony asks Detective Cantu is Pepa and Fina are the same person. Cantu thinks so but he needs more time to get the proof he needs to accuse Fina. Tony promises to keep Gonzo out of the investigation because of his connection to Fina. He wants nothing more than to unmask Fina and return Regina's daughter to her so that Regi will be his once again.

Fina is all sugary sweetness and light to Dr. Marina. The Doc sees right through it. She hopes they never see each other again because she will not lie for her patients. Marina is offended when Fina offers to pay for her trouble. Hooray! A doctor who has some integrity in this show!

Ines is thrilled to hear about Regina's success with Gonzo. Regi doesn't like that Gonzo is still married but Ines assures her that it is only a marriage on paper. Fina and Roberta walk down the hallway just in time for Ines to catch a glimpse. Regi rushes over to see them but they've already gone. She's curious to see what Fina looks like. It feels strange for Regi to be the other woman.

Nata tells Augie that it is difficult for her to "break the picture" - end the dream of having a house, 2.5 kids, and a white picket fence with Jero. Augie suggests that Nata could find another man to share that with her. He promises to do everything he can to make her divorce as painless as possible. Augie will always be by her side.

Jero and Carlos go to the police to accuse Agustin and Roberta of the murder of Rafael.

Avances: Jero watches as Augie gets arrested. The police haul Roberta off to jail and it drives Fina over the edge.

delito - crime
barrera - barrier, wall

El Mundo de Telemundo, Week of August 8, 2011: Discuss Amongst Yourselves

I’m going to post the page so we can get the conversation going. I’d especially like to hear what everyone thinks of the latest primetime novela, Flor Salvaje. (I’m not sure I love the premise of the show, but I guess I’m still on the fence.)

In La Casa de al Lado, everything is spinning out of control for both the Conde and the Ruiz families. Adolfo is a terrorist who kills without a backward glance. Pilar finally breaks away from Javier the Jorrible but she may be done in by her own kids. Renato is not only on the brink of financial ruin, he is now on the brink of death. Matías and Rebeca are trying to put out fires but Adolfo and Javier may extinguish them before they get a chance to do any good. What a mess.

Mi Corazón Insiste: Sorry, I’m not watching this one.

Thanks to Hombre, Novelera, NJ Sue and Jean for all the great mini-recaps last week. (I have a hunch you have a lot of appreciative readers out there.)

Teresa Thu 8/4/11 #109 Apparently Teresa has a heart. Medically, at least.

Lo siento, (I always say this at the beginning of each recap!) this is a "barebones" recap because I am running behind. This is the only way I'll get this recap up in time. I wrote this on the fly, as the episode was showing. I was recording it on my computer and didn't want to pause it. So I KNOW I missed stuff. Please fill in blanks and correct any errors! Thank you!

TERESA, EPISODE 109, August 4, 2011

Saenz's widow comes over, waves a gun around, there is a scuffle, and Teresa is shot.

Patty and Johnny talk while Johnny is in his bed, recovering from his wounds.

Juana comes over and looks on in horror at Teresa's wounded body. Professor Hottie is absolutely beside himself with grief and fear. He yells to Juana to call the Mexican 911, which she does.

Much crying and wailing over Teresa. Guess who the Mexican 911 brings, but Mariano! His look of anguish at seeing her bleeding body is very telling.

He rushes to help her and we get some rather graphic closeups of the bleeding wound. Aurora and her dad hear about Teresa at the hospital. Aurora is freaked out and worried.

Gramps visits Johnny and Patty and doesn't seem all that sympathetic about Johnny being beat up.

Reina the maid tells Geno about Teresa's misfortune through the house gates. Geno has come to put up a for sale sign on their house.

Fito looks on as Geno and Reina get the for sale sign set up. He wonders why they're selling their house.

Teresa is rushed through the hospital hallways, as the doctors quickly yell medical-babble about her condition. It looks very serious.

Armando and Refugio talk about his employment troubles at home, and Aurora comes in to tell them the news about Teresa. They talk at once, very upset of course. Refugio prays to the Virgin Mary for help.

At the hospital, Professor Hottie asks Mariano how is Teresa. Tell me the truth. Mariano says that they have to wait and see. No vital organs were hit.

Geno comes to visit Rubigote in the Big House and has some news.

Juana talks with Mariano about Teresa's care. Mariano is really distressed, wishing he could do more. Juana tells Mariano that Teresa really loves Arturo. She took the bullet meant for him, after all. Mariano seems really broken up about this. Juana tells him it's time to move on.

In private, Mariano cries and can't believe she's forgotten him.

The parents arrive. Juana tells them that a bullet hit near the head and one near the heart. They almost collapse in distress. (Ah! So Teresa does have a heart for real!)

Aurora goes into Mariano's office to see him weeping, his head resting on his desk. Just weeping. It's not important that's she's with Professor Hottie, it's important that she is okay, he cries, and then goes in for a weepy embrace with Aurora.

Mayra visits Rubigote in the Big House and he asks for forgiveness.

More talking with a weepy Mariano and Juana. I think things came into focus when Teresa was shot. He's still not over her but what he wants now is for her to be okay. I know I missed a lot in this scene!

Rubigote asks again for forgiveness and Mayra says that so she won't be bitter, she does forgive him. He seems relieved and thinks this is a good time to ask her to sign a pardon so he can get the heck out of jail. You can see the light switch flip on and she says WHAT? Yeah, she'll forgive him, but not to that extent! After all he's done! The heck with you is what I think she says, before she stalks off. Well, that didn't work out well.

Luisa is working on her laptop and Fernando's place and talking about how she's got to work work work because she wants to help pay off credit cards, blah blah to help her brother. Fernando says he's got something up his sleeve to help Professor Hottie, but he won't say what. Then Professor Hottie calls to tell about Teresa.

More with Mariano teary-eyed over the love with Teresa that wasn't mean to be. He calls another doctor or something about Teresa's surgery, to let him know more about it (?).

Poor Professor Hottie is still beside himself at Teresa's being shot, and tells Refugio that he can't go on without her. Refugio also makes a scene of great distress over Teresa and everyone just looks miserable.

Geno and Aeeeeda are talking and Mayra comes in. They want to know if she signed the pardon for Rubigote? HECK NO! Mayra says and says that's the only reason he apologized in the first place. So he could be off the hook.

At the hospital, Professor Hottie and Refugio are still all bummed out when Mariano comes up and gets a phone call. Turns out they don't have any blood in the blood bank for Teresa. She's the rare blood type AB negative. Impactado looks from everyone.

At Johnny's sickbed, he wants to get up because he needs to work. The pretty blonde doctor says he can't do that. Cutberto is there too. They are talking (I think Johnny is going to use cell phone minutes to call Esperanza) when the doctor asks them if they know hat happened to Teresa. They don't.

Geno is explaining to Mayra that things are really tough for Rubigote, he's going to have a nervous breakdown. Mayra looks concerned about this. Then I think Aida says something about Teresa? (I missed this part because I was typing this recap!)

Patty and Johnny are talking about poor Teresa, and how they can use the cell phone to call Mariano and find out how she's doing. (I think.)  Johnny grunts in pain because he really wants to get up. Grampa comes in and wants to talk to him. I think he says he wants to take Patty away now.

Juana is chatting with Armando in the hospital and Cutberto comes in and offers her a comforting hug.

There's a discussion between Geno and Rubigote at the Big House. I missed something here. They are talking about how they'll have the baby (that they'll steal from Esperanza) but also there's some talk about Mayra and how she trusts Geno? Is Geno feeling guilty? Rubigote tells her to think of nice things, about the kid they're going to raise.

Johnny of course doesn't want to give up Patty. Grampa says they can get a divorce. Johnny isn't going for that.

I think Fernando donated blood to Teresa? Luisa and Professor Hottie are talking with him at the hospital and seem very grateful.

Hernan the Galan visits Johnny and I think says Johnny can't leave his bed. Patty comes in and Gramps says that she's going to go with him.

Juana is really afraid for Teresa and Cutberto offers her comfort. She tells him that Teresa is being operated on my "mi novio," Hector. That dampens Cutberto's mood a bit.

Patty isn't going to go with Gramps. Gramps wants her to reconsider.

There is some talk between Mayra and Geno. I think they're saying that if Teresa dies, then all the real estate land will go to Mayra? I know I missed something again.

We go back to the hospital and everyone is waiting for the news on Teresa's condition. Hector the Director comes in and looks very severe and not happy. Poor Professor Hottie looks stricken, with red-rimmed eyes and waits to hear the news. Suspense!

END OF EPISODE!

Cuando Me Enamoro #77 Thursday 8/4/11 The Mother of the Sneer

Ahoy all, sorry for the late post, I ended up entertaining unexpected guests today. Does the world not know that Thursday is my recap night?

The lead-in for tonight tells us the same thing the magic voice promised last night, that everyone, everyone believes Roberta’s lie...except Jeronimo!

Let’s review the critical scene from last night’s conclusion. To quote Marta:
"Fina to Renata: ‘You are the only one to blame for your sister Rob who will NEVER... hear it well, ... NEVER have a baby.. you destroyed her life... and I hope you are happy now.' Nata is frozen,Jero is shocked... Gonzo has a warzone face.. Matt has a questioning glance for Fina.”

Fina continues to blame Renata for pushing her sister down the stairs. Renata denies this as Gonzo tries to calm her down. Matias keeps a low profile until Jero pops in with his two pesos. He still wants a test to prove he’s not the father of Berta’s bebe. Fina says the baby is gone and it doesn’t matter any more. It matters to Jero (as well it should) but now Gonzo and Matias jump on the Fina bandwagon and want Jero to get lost. Nata sees it’s pointless to argue with these ninnies and convinces Jero to leave with her. “See what a shameless hussy (descarada) she is for coming with that lout?” snarls Fina, pointing her finger accusingly at them from under her witches cape.

Fina storms into Roberta’s room to report that everything is arranged and Nata is blamed for Roberta’s accident. Berta points out that without a kid there’s no reason for Matias to stay by her side. Fina insists they’ll figure out a way. Berta points out that mom has been very preoccupied recently; what could be more important than helping Roberta out with the problem that Fina put Berta in the middle of? Fina thought bubbles Gustavo’s warning that an investigator is checking up on her and her darling daughters. She hisses to Berta that she (Fina) has problems that are just as important as Berta’s. It cost a lot to give them the life they are accustomed to and it is still costing her. “Not one reproach more,” she threatens, “is that clear?”

Gonzo and Matias scratch their heads and continue their angst in the hospital waiting room. Matias mentions that yesterday Roberta seemed unsure if the baby was Jeronimo’s, and if it isn’t Jero’s then it must be his own. (Really? What about Rafael?) Matias cries that he still thinks of Renata and he wishes she looked at him the way she looks at Jero. “But she hates Jero,” says Gonzo. Matias points out if that’s hate he would love for Renata to hate him as much.

Jero and Renata stand in front of the hospital and Jero complains that he couldn’t be the baby daddy because he and Roberta never slept together. Sucks to be accused of something you haven’t done, doesn’t it Jero? Renata says the baby’s gone so it doesn’t matter, there’s no point (no tiene caso). But he wants to PROVE it to her! She keeps saying there’s no point, give it a rest. He wouldn’t let her prove she was innocent and she’s not interested in his proof.

Jero says he is innocent, and you know what else? Roberta’s accident was very convenient. It was about the only way for her to avoid a DNA test. Nata doesn’t believe it. Roberta staged the accident that would cause her to lose her baby? “Those are strong words Jeronimo.” (Son palabras mayores).

Padre is advising Ezequiel to forgive Alfonsina. “She loves you but she lost her way, and let he who is without sin cast the first stone.” (Quien esté libre de culpas, que arroje la primera piedra.) Alfonsina arrives on cue and Zeke starts to get mad but she shuts him up by telling him she’s leaving town and leaving the kid behind with dad. “You’re a much better father than I am a mother,” she weeps sincerely, “he’d be better off with you.” Zeke gets a trembly bottom lip.

Jero begs Renata not to close the doors of her life to him. “Dude, you totally slammed that door shut yourself,” she clarifies. “We’re finished here.” (You go girl!!)

Jero calls Coni to tell her something is up with Renata. It’s something more important than his own life. (Well that narrows it down...NOT.)

Honorio reviews the books and sees there is something wrong with the financial statements. He calls Adri to show her things just don’t tally (cuadrar). The income vs expenses don’t correspond. They summon Daniel and demand all the reports for the past three months. Daniel’s shifty eyes dart back and forth suspiciously. He looks scared.

Gonzo, Matias and Fina stand around Berta’s bedside. She weeps crocodile tears (maybe) over her lost baby and lost chance for motherhood. Matias and Gonzo advise her not to give up hope, there are other ways to be a parent. Fina snips at them not to minimize Berta’s grief. Witch. Gonzo calmly tells her that sometimes one’s only hope is to have a positive attitude. This is advice that I’m pretty sure is completely lost on Fina. Berta tells them she’s so sad because Matias only married her for the baby; what will they do now? He says they’ll talk later. She weeps that whatever she felt for him is even stronger now and she’ll never stop thanking him for what he’s done for her. Fina sneers her approval as Matias is crushed by the weight of misplaced guilt.

Nata cries on her bed and asks a comforting Coni why couldn’t SHE (Coni) have been her mother? Why doesn’t her mother love her and why did the man she love betray her? She doesn’t deserve it!

Don’t we deserve a break from all this grief? You bet we do! Carlos leads Matilde to her romantic surprise. Next to a lovely waterfall sits a beautifully set table with flowers and balloons. It’s all for her. Mati can’t speak, a first for her, she can only weep and smile. “Between you and I words aren’t needed,” he says. (Entre tu y yo no hacen falta las palabras.) Dang, this scene was way too short.

Jero returns to the hospital to talk to Roberta’s doctor, Marina Sepulveda. They shake hands, make eye contact, and we just figured out why the beautiful doctor might spill the beans to the handsome, earnest guy in the suit.

Nata and Coni talk about their insane morning and Jero’s suggestion that Berta caused her own accident. Nata can’t believe such a thing unless...unless maybe Berta wasn’t actually pregnant? And she faked it to trap Matias? No, Coni assures her that when Gonzo was in Cuernevaca Berta had fainted, gone to the hospital and they all heard about her condition. Nata sighs and says Fina and Berta will never stop blaming her, Renata, for the accident. “Come and live with me then!” suggests Coni.

Back at the romantic water lunch Carlos and Matilde share stories about when they first loved the other. He was enchanted at first sight. She loved the way he was able to stomach her spicy food. They both want children, but before they discuss that Carlos has a question. He gets on his knees, pulls out a plastic bubble-gum ring and asks Mati to marry him. The girl’s really got the weepies today, she’s dreamed about this moment for so long but never thought it would arrive, boo hoo. She nods yes and a lingering kiss seals the deal. (A plastic ring? Dare I repeat myself...how childish, how silly, how HOT! I thank the telenovela gods for this character. Which reminds me, where’s Lazaro today?) Rewind.

Doc Marina tells Jero she’s sorry but without authorization from Berta or her husband she can’t give him DNA proof on the baby. Jero admits he doesn’t want Berta or her husband to know but he REALLY NEEDS the proof. Sorry, she says, besides, it’s too late to do a DNA test anyway. (Not according to our Doc Carlos!) Jero looks momentarily confused as Doc Marina assures him she’d luuuurve to help him with something else someday but for this particular case...nope.

Carlos and Mati are back at the hacienda basking in their new love when an envelope arrives. It contains the results of Rafa’s necropsy. Carlos calls Jero and 1) excitedly tells him that he and Mati are engaged, then 2) glumly informs him the envelope arrived. “Open it,” instructs Jero. After the obligatory cara impactada Carlos tells Jero he won’t tell him over the phone. What is in this envelope could change Jero’s life. It’s urgent that Jero come home immediately!

Nata is leaving Misery Manor when Augie pops in for a surprise visit. Gosh he looks chipper this morning, whatever could have caused his good mood? Nata looks not quite as pleased as Augie is with himself. He sees her suitcases and wonders is she going to La Bonita? Nope, off to Aunt Coni’s. Augie grabs her suitcases and gives her the card of an excellent lawyer so she can start divorce proceedings immediately. He’s made an appointment for tomorrow and he’d like to go with her. Whoa, Mr. Inappropriate much?

As Matias and Gonzo leave the hospital they run into Regina. Gonzo explains briefly about Berta and Regina says they need to talk. He wants to talk too, Renata told him something that disconcerted him. “Can we meet tonight at my house?” she asks. Gonzo doesn't even bother to hide his joy and happily agrees to meet up later.

Cantu checks in with Antonio via phone booth and mentions something about his cell phone not working. He reports that Regina has already returned to the DF and he will too because the person who has the proof he needs wants to see him in Mexico City. He asks should he take charge for Regina’s security or should he call Gonzo? Tony pitches a fit and says he is the ONLY one who is in charge of Regina’s safety and finding her daughter. Go through him, the little bullfighting Napoleon. These people never learn.

Fina complains to her smitten stoolie that someone is investigating her past and she wants to know who. She needs him now more than ever. He points out that he “needs” her too. If she wants his continued help she'll have to put out what she promised. If she doesn’t want to be his mujer then he can’t help her. He’ll wait for her call. Fina throws dagger eyes at his back. As our esteemed Blusamurai so aptly noted: "So many murders to plan and so little time...whatever is a bumbling would be serial murderer to do?"

Regina and Ines talk about seizing the day and not wasting time. Ines says Andresito gets out of the hospital tomorrow. Cut to the little conehead and papa conehead playing a computer game. Back to the ladies and Ines says with the support of all his friends Andresito is determined to have a positive attitude about recuperating. Ines gossips that she saw Gonzo’s viper of a wife there a few days ago with her daughter who apparently had a miscarriage, but they were only there one day. Regina says that’s odd, Gonzo told her today that Berta just lost her baby. Hmmmmm...

Carlos is stressing about Rafa’s results. He gets serious and asks Matilde on the day of Rafa’s death who was at the hacienda? She recounts what happened: Rafa was alone because she and Laz went into town. When they got home they found him lying in his room. Soon Dr. Nesme and Augustin arrived, and then Padre, and they found a bullet in his stomach. Carlos asks if she remembers anything else? She remembers finding a note from Augustin. “So Augustin was here,” says Carlos. Mati says yes but he said he hadn’t gone to Rafa’s room.

Carlos hands the results to Matilde and it’s her turn for a cara impactada. “This can’t be!” she sobs.

Kari hurries to church and she is stopped by none other than her staggering husband. He slobbers that she is all his. Trying to step around him she tells him he stole her happiness and innocence. He says he’ll never divorce her and she’ll never be free. He grabs her and the padre runs out and calls him a coward, "pick on someone your own size!" Doc slurs to Kari “you’ll alwaysh be tied to me” before he stumbles off.

The Padre apologizes to Kari for not believing her all those numerous times she begged him for help and he refused to believe the obvious truth that was staring him in the face. She says no problem but I say it’s about time.

Carlos tells Mati not a word to anyone until they tell Jero. Manuela, Laz and Herminia rush in to congratulate the pair on their happy news. Laz is happy but also a little worried because Mati is a simple country girl and Carlos is a society guy. What will his parents think? Carlos and Manuela say something about his parents coming to ask for Mati’s hand in marriage? (Ruh roh?) Not sure what that was about. Whatever, the lovebirds want to get married as quickly as possible. Ready the anvils.

Nata, with Augi’s intrusive and unneeded help, has moved into Coni’s place. Jero calls to say he needs to leave but he doesn’t want to go until he clears things up between them. She repeats that they are over but Augie butts in and loudly comments "You want more coffee?!!" so Jero can hear him. Nata hangs up and stalks to her room. Augie thought bubbles, “When will Jeronimo Linares learn to leave her in peace!?”

Split screen of Jero: "Renata te amo, I can’t live without you Renata" and Renata: “What do I do with this love? I don’t want to love you, get out of my life already!"

The end.

Avances: Gustavo annoys Fina. Carlos yells to Jero that someone shot Rafa and Dr. Nesme covered it up.

cuadrar = to tally, to square up
descarado/a = shameless
Entre tu y yo no hacen falta las palabras. = Between you and I words are not needed.
no tiene caso = there’s no point
son palabras mayores = those are strong words
Quien esté libre de culpas, que arroje la primera piedra. = Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.
