La Pola - July 11-15, 2011 - Living and Dying for Love

For characters and places go to mai tai's guide to la Pola

MONDAY

Nicolasa asks Pola when if she will go back to Santa Fé. Pola says tomorrow, but first I will meet with Candelaria in the chicharía to explain some ideas to the people. She has to find Vivianito. Nic says it is Cata’s fault that he is missing. But, she stops talking about it because she says she doesn’t have the right to speak and doesn’t want to risk her baby’s freedom.

Gertrudis talks to Domingo again. You should treat Cata better – OK, folks, this is the part that you can fill in – her lines, his lines, etc.

The only thing he wants his wife to be is faithful (uh, oh!) Domingo chastises himself because he hasn’t even done what Jaoquín talked about. He is reminded about that by Pola. Pola has done in months what took them years to do. He says he is a coward.

Add Cata’s lines here. She’s praying. Pola finds her and asks about the man who has put her between happiness and tragedy. Is it Juliano? Cata denies it, but the cat is out of the bag.

Viviano tells Alejo that he was going to Santa Fé to find Pola, and he doesn’t believe anything Alejo says. He is as stubborn as his sister, Alejo tells Arcos. The only thing you will find in Santa Fé is to kill Pola of anguish.

Sámano asks Leandro why his brother is talking to that boy. Leandro has no idea. We have to escape, says Sámano. We have to stay here to serve our king. Leandro agrees with him. There are two cities – Santa Marta and Popayan that have not committed treason and that are not under banderas americanas (American flags). Leandro tells him that he has family in Popayan and that they will help them. Then we will go there, says Sámano.

Speaking of Popayan, Francisco returns to the manse – but, he doesn’t have any mail from Gaspar, Alejo and Leandro. He is especially disappointed that Leandro hasn’t written because he doesn’t think it was a very serious argument. He and María Teresa talk about the junta and are wondering about what has happened to the viceroys. Francisco tells María Teresa that the governor is coming – it is Thursday – card playing night. María Teresa is worried. She doesn’t want to take advantage of the Valencias – diezmodo las provisions. But, Francisco tells her that when Gaspar put him in charge he gave them rights. He is the administrator.

Sámano and his military escort arrive in Guaduas. Alejo decides to personally deliver Vivianito to his house. Sámano gets off his horse before Alejo can order them to dismount. Alejo tells Arcos to find them pernoctar (somewhere to spend the night) – get these people a place to stay while I return this boy to his house.

In the chicharía Pola asks Candelaria where are all the people. Candelaria asks Pola about the soldier who dishonored her. It didn’t happen, says Pola. On cue, the soldiers enter the chicharía. Sámano intimidates men sitting at a table so they get up and move. Sámano tells Leandro that this place will be useful for their plans – a little bit of chicha goes a long way. (OK, he didn’t say it like that.) Sámano tells Arcos that he needs a little diversion. Then he grabs one of the barmaids.

Pola sees it and flashes back to the day Sámano tried to order the troops to fire on the civilian crowd.

Alejo takes Vivianito to Domingo’s and finds out that Pola isn’t there. Cata hugs Vivianito who tells her that’s the first time she’s ever done that.

At the Valencia manse the governor explains the political situation to Francisco. The provinces that have taken power are now the rule. The viceroys are on the way to Spain. Popayan is still loyal to the king. Francisco asks about the deputy that Santa Fé wanted from Popayan. If we do that, says the governor, we will legitimize them. Francisco counsels prudence. It is very confusing says the governor. We have to determine what side we are on.

With the girl clenched to him on his lap, Sámano says that it is a Spanish custom to conquer the Indians. Arcos finds Pola. Yes, she remembers him – you are my future husband. Do you want to know about Alejo. Not important, she says. Why are you here, she asks. He tells her they are escorting Sámano to Cartagena.

Pola hears the barmaid yell, let me go, let me go. Sámano roughs her up. Pola grabs Arcos’ dagger. Let’s give him the goodbye he deserves, she says. She holds the blade to his throat. He remembers her as the mestiza from Guaduas.

Cata tells Alejo that Pola is at the chicharía. Do you remember me? Gertrudis remembers that he is the soldier who stole Pola’s honor.

Sámano orders the men to put their arms down. Candelaria asks Pola if she is crazy. In this village people think badly of me because of this man. He accused me of being a thief. He belongs in jail. Tell everyone that I didn’t steal from you. I am not accustomed to taking orders from women, says Sámano.

Alejo asks Cata and Gertrudis how can he convince them. Swear. He swears. He finally admits that the only person who can clear all this up is Pola. He is going to find her. Vivianito says take me with you or I will run behind.

Pola puts the dagger to Sámano’s chin and draws blood. She tells him that any man who would take a woman by force deserves it. He begs her not to kill him. Finally, he tells everybody that she didn’t rob him – perdoname, he says. You assassin. He was on the point of committing a massacre in Santa Fé. Sámano says he has a passport – meaning he has a right to travel freely. He belongs in jail, she says. She is going to talk to the mayor. Everyone in the chicharía cheers. Sámano looks scared.

Francisco gambles away Ignacia’s piano.

To Gertrudis, Cata says maybe he came to marry her. Gertrudis says that he could have done that many times before. They will have to wait for Pola to find out.

Alejo arrives at the chicharía. He asks about the soldiers. Candelaria convinces him to have a drink or she’s not talking. They went to the mayor’s. he is looking for Apolonia Salvatiera – La Pola. I know her. She is very beautiful. She was going to marry the mayor but some soldier la quitó la honra. A few minutes ago she practically degolló (cut the throat) of a Spanish officer.

Pola tries to convince the mayor to put Sámano in jail. The mayor flashes back to a conversation he had with Sámano and remembers about how Sámano feels about the worth of a woman like Pola – un gusano de tierra (maggot). Sámano tells the mayor that you aren’t going to give in to the caprichos of this girl.

The mayor says that in Guaduas the chapetones will pass the night in the jail. Sámano threatens him by saying he will return and at that time it will be all of you begging me for mercy. He is going to destroy them.

I don’t believe it, says Pola. If you put a dagger to my throat, I will not cry like a girl. Leandro tells her that she manages the people very well. Promise me one thing, he asks: Make my brother happy. She doesn’t understand. You have no idea what he has sacrificed for you. I don’t understand. You will, says Leandro.

The governor thanks Francisco and María Teresa for a good, as usual, evening. I hope you have better luck next time. He will send for the piano tomorrow. Francisco tells María Teresa not to say one single reproachful word. What are we going to do, she asks. Francisco says that he has relieved them of his instrument of torture – referring to María ignacia’s playing.

Alejo and Vivianito arrive at the mayor’s. Arcos says I thought you had forgotten us. Sámano is spending the night in jail. Some of the guards are on duty; others have been give a place to stay by the mayor.

Pola goes to sleep in the stable. Vivianito comes in and wakes her. She goes outside to thank the man who found Vivianito. It is, of course, Alejo. Alejo reaches for her, but she punches him in the stomache (ouch). She tells him she was serious about not wanting to see him again. She takes off on her horse and it begins to storm.

At the jail Leandro joins Sámano who says at last someone remembered me. He swears that girl will pay for this. Leandro (is he having some loyalty to Sámano issues?) asks if the accusations are true. Sámano claims not to remember. Anyway, he says, it is his right. Sámano notes that Leandro is quiet. Don’t tell me you wanted her, too. Leandro tells Sámano that it is his brother who knows her. Did he want to cabalgar with the woman. No, he doesn’t look for her to cabalgar. He wants to marry her. Sámano laughs.

Alejo chases after Pola. A branch breaks, and she falls off her horse. She says he should have fallen. She has a scratch on her forehad. Look, my blood is blue. Why did you come to Guaduas. Alejo tells her he is there to escort Sámano to Cartagena and to take the opportunity to come here and ask her to marry him.

This is the fourth time, and it hs never happened. Then he tells her about María Ignacia’s accusation. I don’t want to know anything about you, she says. Swear it, says Alejo, that you don’t want to know anything about me.

Then – there is nothing I want more than to look into your pretty eyes. But, it is the same thing that gives me pain – go back from where you came. I don’t want to have anything to do with anyone who doesn’t believe in me for the color of my skin.

Then they talk about the charges against him. She explains that Gertrudis and Cata saw them kiss in the moonlight. You know better, he says, but they don’t.

Nobody ever kissed me. I didn’t know any better. Women should be taught more useful things like losing their virtue. In spie of everything, I will alsays belong to you. No one will touch me.

Sámano tells Leandro – but, they cannot marry without your father’s permission. This doesn’t matter to Alejo, says Leandro. Sámano tells him that this goes against the king. She is part of the Carbonel group. They are in favor of France. Leandro tries to tell him that he is wrong. They are followers of Nariño who was put in prison for translating a document called the Rights of Man. My brother would prefer to die than be on the side of the enemy. Sámano: your brother is one of those men who do absurd things for women.

Leandro answers that when Alejo finds out she is on the side of the enemy, he will change his opinion of her.

TUESDAY

Pola explains to Alejo how Cata and Gertrudis came to understand that Pola had lost her honor. Then Cata, a married woman, explained to her (Pola) about how you lose your virginity. Pola was very embarrassed. Nobody believed her. But, she says, it was a good thing because she didn’t have to marry the mayor. So, let’s leave it the way its. Why do you think I broke the engagement with him. After the explanation, Alejo forgives her.

She then says, but do you think I like it that people think I am a woman living in sin, that I have lost my virtud? My family just about disowned me and made me sleep in the stable. The priest won’t even hear my confession. But, in the stable she made friends.

Who guards your virtue in the stable? I am free. I am not a woman being held in a prison to protect her virtue. Do you still have your virtue, he asks. Who do you think I am. It doesn’t matter what others think, but you, it does. You kissed me. He is sorry – no, it was the most beautiful moment if my life. You say things so pretty, says Alejo. Wasn’t it a beautiful moment for you? Yes, the most beautiful in my life. That is better, she says. Too bad you didn’t take my virtue, says Pola.

I could not give my virtue to anyone other than you. And you? Men can do what they want. The truth, he says, is no. He has not lost his virtue either. Why not? I don’t know. Men like you are always looking for adventures with mestizas like me. I have saved myself for you. Finally – they kiss. Pola tells him she has dreamed of this so many times. I will die happy.

Leandro tells Sámano that he is sorry they are in jail. Sámano tells him that they have to change plans. Do you want me to talk to my brother? Sámano tells him to try it. But, you and your brother are different.

Pola and Alejo embrace. It is important that we are together. How can we get married without your father’s permission. When I am 25. It sounds like so long and so many things can happen. And, if your father would give permission? It would take much money. Domingo would be happy to pay to get rid of me. 5,000 gold pesos says Alejo. Well, maybe Domingo could borrow it if your father would even accept it. It is impossible. Pola asks why don’t we live together without marriage. He protests – she gets mad and runs off again. Your life is always filled with limitations, she says.

Vivianito asks Bernarda why hasn’t Pola returned. Will she marry him? Pola will never give him up says Bernarda. Why are Nicolasa and Juliano sleeping separately? Aren’t they married?

Alejo tries to explain his situation to Pola. She insists it is all because she is a mestiza. In front of God we are all the same. That is what Nariño says. He is against the king, says Alejo. No, says Pola. He is against the king being our owner.

Are you interested in him? asks Alejo. He could be my father and besides, he has a wife. He is the one who began the fight. Alejo says that he who is against the king is against God. Pola replies that she is not sure the king was sent by God. The people he sends are ambitious and arrogant like the viceroys. Alejo tells her that her father is a Don – de origen noble. Does that mean that my virtue isn’t worth as much as your novia’s virtue? We can never live in peace, you and I, says Pola.

Vivianito adds that when he grows up he will never look at a woman because it is all suffering.

Baraya reads the thoughts of Nariño to the revolutionaries about the formation of a government. One says – this is impossible. Nariño is supporting us. Jorge asks: what is he talking about the peligro interior (danger from within)?

Pola tells Bernarda that she doesn’t want Alejo to look for her any more. Pola leaves – or hides behind a wall. Alejo arrives and asks Bernards if she knows Pola’s whereabouts. Dutifully, Bernarda says no, but she offers Alejo a chocolate drink.

Magda had delivers a letter to the junta. She calls them canallas. You denied my husband freedom. Jorge asks do you think it is us? They deny it. Jorge says it is up to the governor in Cartagena. No, she says, they said it was you. Torres says that they have a special job for Antonio – ambassador to the United States.

In Cartagena Antonio asks the official: what will I do in the U.S.? You will study their form of government. I know they are trying to send me as far as possible. The day you open the door, I will go to Santa Fé.

Torres tells Magda that it will be of valuable interest to us. Magda tells them that they just want to get him out of town. You are on your knees in front of the government of Spain. Why haven’t you elected a president? You are waiting for the viceroys to return. You fooled the people.

Carbonel, they tell her, is in jail because he threatened the viceroys. It is unbelievable, she says, my husband is ready to help you and you treat him like a criminal. Jorge tells her that he himself will send a letter to the junta in Cartagena to free Antonio. But, tell him that he will have to obey the junta of Santa Fé of be punished severely.

Alejo tells Bernarda that it was impossible for him to return before now. Pola says you are serious, but that the situation is difficult. Because of her temperament it is difficult to find a solution. But, please tell her that I will return as soon as possible to formalize the engagement. Maybe that will stop the talking that you robbed her honor and never answered for it. But, Pola always stands up for you. Alejo realizes that Pola is listening behind the wall and says: Didn't you learn that it is bad manners to listen to other people’s conversations? Yes, she says, but it was a long time ago.

The revolutionaries try to determine how they will treat Nariño. The moment he arrives, he will turn the people against us. Jorge reminds them that they need a head. The mayor says well, I’m the vice-president. We have to name a new president. Then the king and everyone will be against us. They discuss the federal government system. We have time. Nariño needs money to come here.

So, what will we do with Baraya? Send him to the south. Send him to confront the governor in Popayan.

Alejo tells Pola: you heard I was going to return soon to formalize the engagement. I love you. Nothing will separate me from you, not even death. How important is it to you what I think? Do you know how many things I am putting at risk for this, asks Alejo. Just to come here and make this proposal. You think I am weak and lacking in character. It is difficult for me to give up everything I have been taught about family and religion. It is your smell, your smile. Since I first met you I could not get you out of my mind. We will find a way to be together.

Arcos comes for him and tells him they cannot wait any longer. Sámano is losing patience.

Alejo says swear to me that you will wait for me. But when you go, you don’t return, she says. I cannot swear to this. He walks away. When he is gone, she says to herself: and you will thank me.

Domingo meets with the mayor. I don’t know if the soldier is going to answer about Pola. Are you jealous? Is this why you are here, asks the mayor. No, Pola just reminds me of a fight I cannot fight. Now I have a personal problem.

Sámano states that he is thirsty just as they pass the chicharía. He wants more than water for the trip. Alejo gets off his horse and goes inside. He asks Candelaria to fill the gourds up with guarapa. Did you find Pola? Was she good? What the people say is wrong. I am going to return and marry her. Candelaria’s daughter says don’t talk bad about Pola. I might be related to her one day. I might marry her brother. What? Says Candelaria. Right, the younger one who is not yet a priest.

Pola tells Cata that this is the fourth time that Alejo has proposed marriage. Aren’t you happy? It is an impossible proposal, says Pola. The whole world interferes. He talked about the king like he was his father. I have to stop being a mestiza or the father will not give permission. Alejo still sees me as a mestiza, not as myself.

Cata says that when there is a difference of races – you don’t even think about it. Pola: and when a child is coming along. She asks Cata point blank again about Juliano, but Cata won’t answer.

On the road Sámano asks if Leandro has tried to convince his brother. I have not had the opportunity, but I will do so, says Leandro. It is a lie that you are brothers – you know your responsibility. He is a man who lives by sentiment. It is a defect in a military man. He is so crazy for this girl that he would deliver the Spanish empire to get under her skirt.

Arcos asks Alejo why doesn’t Pola believe in him? I am not giving up yet, says Alejo. I am going to be at her side until the day I die.

Pola to Cata: How could you do it? Why? I don’t know, I don’t know what came over me. Gertrudis gave me the drinks and that gave me nightmares. But, couldn’t you feel this for Domingo? No. He makes me sick. I saw Nicolasa and Juliana and when he caressed her. It looked so beautiful. I was possessed by the Devil. I could not tell it at confession. Did Juliano do the same to you as he did to Nicolasa? I don’t know if it was the same. She describes it in detail. Did it hurt? asks Pola. No.

Pola says that maybe one day God will let me feel that. With Domingo it is torture. I don’t want him to touch me since I know the other. He forces me. I have lost all feelings for him. I don’t deserve it. I am possessed by the Devil. Pola says no. This is not of the Devil. I, too, have had these feelings for someone and my body needs it to be complete, but that is something else.

Leandro tells Alejo that he heard he lost her. That girl doesn’t know what she lost. Alejo: can’t you get over your superiority. We are all equal. What are you saying? She is the most beautiful, intelligent woman for me. Even if she is against the king and in favor of the French? asks Leandro. Alejo tells him that the king was wrong to send bad governors here. He is about to recognize his error.

Leandro: are you talking about our father? Alejo says that our own father is not a good example. You know, says Leandro, that our father will not make anything easy. I wrote to our mother about the situation in Santa Fé. I told her I had delivered the letter to you. The situation with Pola was not then firm.

Francisco reads the letter. Now that they have taken the piano out what are we going to do, asks María Teresa. The person I trusted most has betrayed me. María Teresa: this letter is for me. I have the right to open it, says Francisco. Now Alejo is going to return to the mestiza. Maybe it is better that he get over her and gets it out of his system. Then María Teresa lets him know that at that time Leandro was in prison. Francisco decides he will go to Santa Fé to free him.

Leandro tells Alejo that he is happy to be free of their father. When he reads the letter he will try to separate you again. I am afraid, says Alejo, afraid of retuning and not finding her.

Leandro is about to asks Alejo the big question about releasing Sámano when the guard arrives. It is Delgado. He has just delivered the viceroys. Alejo asks him to do him a favor for which he will be in his debt for the rest of his life.

THURSDAY

I cannot be in love with a slave Cata tells Pola. Pola says this can only end in disgrace. You know that. I don’t know how Juliano could have betrayed his wife, says Pola. Don’t you think I deserve the love of a miserable slave, asks Cata. You have to earn the love of anyone. Do you know what you have gotten yourself into? What if Domingo finds out? You cannot go near Juliano. I pray to God for the strength, says Cata.

If you only knew how much I wanted to give myself to Aljeo. Haven’t you been together, asks Cata. It is all gossip. If only one day I could belong to him, muses Pola. You are different, says Cata. You are a free woman, not a prisoner like me.

Leave here before there is a tragedy, suggests Pola. Only you know what you feel and only you can leave it. Let me know, says Pola, and we will go together. You cannot be with a person you do not love. Gertrudis is taking all this in. They deny that anything is going on.

The mayor asks Domingo: so, you think your wife doesn’t feel anything for you? She will do nothing for me. But, the mayor says, you have one of the most beautiful women in Guaduas. What good does a beautiful wife do? She doesn’t have a good word or a good look for me. Could it be possible that she is frigid, asks the mayor? No, she is ardiente (burning hot). You should see her move. Is she unfaithful? But, says Domingo, there are no men at the hacienda. He disses the idea of any of he slaves being involved. She is an ambitious woman. I can’t think of anyone.

I have been thinking of killing her and killing myself. Don Andrés suggests divorce because the church accepts divorce in a marriage without children. Without her I would die, says Domingo. I need to find out who is robbing me of my wife.

Arcos reminds Alejo that Capt. Baraya gave him orders to escort Sámano to Cartagena, but Arcos can’t convince Alejo, so he wishes Alejo good luck.

Alejo tells Sámano that he is going to Spain, their country. You are a disgrace, says Sámano. Then, Alejo asks Leandro to let him know when he gets to Spain. Alejo thanks Delgado. I am sure you will be punished, says Delgado. What is it that you must attend to in Guaduas. Alejo leaves them. Delgado then asks Arcos: is it a woman. I can’t gossip, says Arcos.

Sámano to Leandro: they didn’t tell me we have to go to Spain. Leandros says he is sorry, but there is no hope with the new guard.

Nariño’s younger son says that he doesn’t know how his mother dared go out in her state of health. Magda returns. Antonio will be free. He will return in a few months. Her son asks her about his marriage to Eugenia Salazar y Morena. Will you write father for his permission? He wants the wedding to go on regardless.

I thought you were a faithful man, Pola says to Juliano. What are you talking about? You know what I am talking about. Your sister was looking for a macho. She looked for me. But, you have a wife, says Pola. Doesn’t this hurt you? Why did you do it? She came to me, says Juliano. She is a very beautiful woman. If Domingo finds out, he will kill you. I know, says Juliano. It should never happen again. She bought me a hat. I left it in the stable. I am not very strong, but your sister is bad and beautiful. I will take her to Santa Fé, says Pola. Promise me that you will not go near Cata again.

Cata sees the hat. Bernarda doesn’t know whose hat it is. Cata takes the hat.

In the stable Juliano is washing himself. Nicolasa comes in, looks at him and leaves. Cata comes in. Juliano asks her what she is doing there. This hat is very fine, she says. This is a gift. Why do you keep looking for me, asks Juliano. Leave me in peace. Anyway, Juliano gives up on the conversation and walks out. Nicolasa, however, heard everything.

Pola goes to confession. I have come for absolution. There is no absolution without repentance, says the priest. I do not want to be an enemy of God, says Pola. I don’t feel it was a sin. Now you are interpreting the law of God. The same thing happened, she says. Are you going to give me absolution. You know the answer, says the priest.

Nariño tells the officer that he is not part of the Santa Fé junta. He wants to unite the country, and now they are wasting time. But, in jail it is a little difficult. With that the guard opens the door. You are free by the order of the Santa Fé junta.

Domingo, Cata, Gertrudis with their workers and slaves behind them walk down the street to go to church. Where is Pola, asks the mayor? She is in church, says Cata. She went to confession.

Meanwhile, Nicolasa is in labor in the barn. There is no time to get the midwife and Juliano she tells Bernarda.

When Cata and Domingo leave, the mayor tells Gertrudis that they make a good pair. There are problems with no children. It is more than that, says the mayor. Gertrudis won’t talk because she just went to confession. But, she does tell him that Cata has admired him since she was a child.

Alejo arrives in a near empty Guaduas. He finds out everyone has gone to church, so he heads there.

In church the mayor sneeks a peek at Cata. Cata looks at Juliano who is in the back of the church. Pola looks at Cata. Juliano prays for help.

Nicolasa tells Bernarda to go get a knife. She can’t last long like this.

Alejo arrives at the church. He sees Pola in back of the church praying. He remembers what Pola said to him about being a woman in sin. He goes up to her and says: Pola, let us take communion (comulgar). He will not go until she agrees. Either you say yes, or I will not move. She smiles.

In the stable the baby is born (by ceasarian?) dead.

Pola and Alejo go up to the priest who stops and will not give her communion. Alejo asks why not? I don’t owe you any explanations, says the priest. I am the person against whom the accusation was made. It is not true. We just want communion. The priest calls the mayor and guards. She is not in sin, says Alejo. It is a misunderstanding. You have my word. She has not lost her virtue. Will you be my wife, he asks Pola. She is a woman with dignity, and this is an injustice.

Cata pipes in with: he came here before God. You cannot deny her communion. I have confessed. I lack absolution, says Pola. The priest absolves her and gives her communion. Pola walks down the aisle of the church with her head bowed, but with a smile on her face.

In Popayan María Teresa to Francisco: May I speak with you a moment? Why did Leandro write this in the letter. It appears that the situation between you and Leandro is very serious. What was in that letter? The same pack of lies, says Francisco. Where are the candelabra, she asks. I needed money to go to Santa Fé. Alejo is in Santa Fé. I don’t trust him. And what should I do if Gaspar and Eusebia return in your absence? Her problem.

Francisco will take only two slaves and she will have the rest. I can’t take this much longer, says María Teresa.

Bernarda holds the dead baby. Nicolasa asks for it. I will not forgive you, says Bernarda. Nicolasa says you don’t know what you are saying. My son spent all his money to buy your freedom. You deny God. This baby is dead because of you. Nicolasa tells her about Cata. Ask her. God is going to punish you says Bernarda.

Pola asks why Nicolasa didn’t come to mass. Vivianito tells Pola that he loves you. Gertrudis tells her that she is very happy for her. Virtue, she says, once it is lost, you cannot get it back. Go home now and protect yourself. I am not going to lose my liberty, says Pola, I prefer not to have this blessed virtud.

Bernarda carries the dead baby, and Juliano who has just returned, runs to her. Nicolasa gave birth. She shows him the baby. What happened, he asks. Find Nicolasa. She is bleeding badly from the belly.

FRIDAY

Then it is true? asks Mayor Andrés of Pola. You have not lost your virtue. I am sorry this has become a public story, says Pola. There has never been another case like this in Nueva Granada. The mayor tells Pola he is now interested in someone else, but he won’t say who. Please let Alejo go, she asks. He deserves as least one night in jail for causing such a commotion in the church and disturbing the mass, says the mayor.

Anyway, Pola wins and Alejo is let out of jail. Before you go, says the mayor, let me warn you that if you disturb the peace in Guaduas again, I will give you six months.

Alejo thanks Pola for getting him out. I asked you to marry me. Didn’t you hear. Will you listen to my proposal. It is not lies. I swore before God.

Juliano looks for Nicolasa. He finds a trail of blood. He calls out – Nicolasa, wait! She is on the edge of a precipice. You didn’t do anything bad. Wait! But, she goes over the edge of the cliff.

You don’t look happy to marry me says Alejo. We think in very different ways. I am mestiza, you are white. I have no dowry. I will work hard and you will just bring our children up as good Christians. I am not sure I want to stay at home and raise children. Are you serious, he says. You don’t want to marry me? You don’t love me.

By God, I am never going to love anyone like I love you. Then why did you make this decision. For a simple reason, says Alejo. He gives her the medal again. Even though we are different and we don’t have anything in common, and the whole world conspires to separate us, you inspire in me a feeling most pure, noble, marvelous that I have ever felt, and I want to honor this feeling by giving you my life if necessary.

I didn’t understand, says Pola. Now my answer is “yes.” They kiss in the middle of the street. Now I have the medal of the Virgin who will protect me. And when people see it they will know you belong to me, says Alejo. He still has the piece of cloth she used on him many years ago. I have a gold medal and you have a piece of cloth. They have very different values.

Nicolasa is still alive when Juliano reaches her at the bottom of the cliff. She begs him to leave her. You will get well he says. Forgive me for not loving you the way I should have, says Juliano. Our child was going to be free. Don’t say that. She asks him how he could get involved with Cata. She tells him she heard them. Forgive me, he pleads. It was my own fault, says Nicolas. This woman is not good. Swear to me that you will flee. You have to do it. Succeed in being free, but don’t forget where you came from. She dies.

The revolutionaries discuss the matter of a stable government. Only four provinces are sending representatives to Santa Fé. But none of the important cities are joining. Don Camilo Torres says that those smaller cities think that they have the same rights as the larger ones. This idea is absurd. They fear they are going to end up with fifty independent states with different constitutions. Baraya says that Nariño believes the head of the government should be in Santa Fé, and he has the manner of convincing the other provinces.

Nariño believes that the enemy is outside, not inside, he tells the official in Cartagena. The United States had to unite. You speak as if you want independence from Spain. Spain will interpret this as treason and will return to punish us. You (Cartagena) will be the first.

Don Jorge doesn’t see the utility of Nariño. Led by Don Camilo, the revolutionary group traps Baraya into leading an army to Popayan. They are going to promote him to colonel. They also want him to go to Cali and to Santa Marta. He will be the liberator of Nueva Granada. Baraya wants Nariño’s opinion. He is not a soldier, says Jorge. Tacón is on the point of war. Should we give this job to someone else?

Magda tries to borrow money. They know we can’t pay back, says her son. Yes, we can pay. Once we make a demand for them to return to us what has been confiscated. What good is your father’s freedom if he doesn’t have money to come home. Her nose bleeds. If you father doesn’t return soon, I don’t know what state he will find me in.

In Guaduas the slaves are looking over the dead baby. When Juliano arrives, he carries Nicolasa’s body. He tells them she jumped off a cliff. He is ready to do the same.

Pola asks Alejo if they are engaged now. Do we have to wait until you are twenty five before we can marry? That is our last card (to play), says Alejo, but, we have another. I must tell you, he says that in spite of our differences, I still owe my father loyalty. I already received a dowry from the engagement with María Ignacia. I am going to ask my father to explain. My father never gave me the money. He said he sent it to you. That was a lie. I know, says Alejo. Leandro told me. I am going to ask him for it, and I will forgive the debt if he allows me to marry you. Now she understands. He is going to sobornar his father (persuade him). She wants to get married soon.

Juliano tells the other slaves that Nicolasa is free at last. I am going to give her the despida (good bye) she deserves. She is a princess. If someone will not permit it, they will have to kill me.

Governor Tacón visits Francisco and notes the absence of the piano. Francisco says now we have more room. What are these trunks for, asks the governor. Francisco ells the governor he is going to Santa Fé. What could be more important than being here? The governor is looking for people loyal to him and the king. I need you here. You owe me, says the governor. OK, says Francisco, I will delay the trip.

Alejo asks Pola if it is a problem for him to stay in Domingo’s posada. But, you are paying, she says. Are you staying with your sister? No, she says, I am staying with the slaves and servants of Domingo as usual. You are joking, he says. You have your good name back. It is not for that. I am among friends.

Alejo tells her that if she is going to be his wife, please consider my opinions. Pola tells him that he has to consider her opinions, too. I am sleeping there. They are my family and I want you to accept it as that. He bows his head.

She takes Alejo to where they hear music. It is not a celebration. It is a funeral. Juliano thanks her for the freedom of his child. Is it born? Asks Pola. My child is dead and Nicolasa went with the child. She hugs Juliano, and Alejo is visibly uncomfortable. How could this happen. He tells her about the poison. She didn’t want the child to be a slave.

Cata and Domingo wake and hear the music. Who gave them permission to have a party, asks Domingo. Stay here, he tells Cata. I will not take long.

Pola tells Alejo that Nicolasa was Juliano’s woman and that Juliano is Bernarda’s son. They are like my family. I don’t understand why this slave said you got their child’s freedom. She taught them to read and write. And, they understood? asks Alejo. I discovered that the law wasn’t being followed and I helped Juliano make a demand against Domingo. Domingo agreed that the first child born would be born free. Alejo then tells her that this is the first time he has realized how painful the life of a slave is.

Domingo: What happened here? Pola tells him it is not a party. Domingo makes the sign of the cross when he sees Nicolasa and the baby laid out. It happened when you were at mass, he is told. Tomorrow we will bring her to church for a Christian burial. Nicolas was not a Christian, says Juliano. But, you married. You made us, says Juliano. This is witchcraft. Are you going to disobey me.

Ciro offers a whipping, but Domingo declines. Let them have their funeral. Alejo tells that this slave dared to confront his master. This could be bad for him. Pola just says that he is learning to defend himself.

Cata asks Gertrudis if she thinks they are really going to get married. I think so, says Gertrudis, after the spectacle in the church.

Domingo returns. It is not a party. Nicolasa died. What? She died in childbirth. She was my slave, says Cata. You had Bernarda serve you. Cata wants to go help since she is the owner. Domingo realizes that he can’t stop her. Gertrudis says that isn’t it good that she shows good sentiment to the slaves. The only thing she wants, says Domingo, is to hurt them.

Cata goes out to the stable. I pot is hanging over an open fire. She looks at Nicolasa and the baby. Juliano: what are you doing here? I found out about Nicolasa and came to offer my sympathy. You said it. Now go. Why are you crying. It hurts me, she says. Are you guilty for what you did. It wasn’t my fault. Nicolasa heard us. That is why she killed herself. It isn’t true, says Cata. I don’t want this to separate us. I cannot see you ever, never, says Juliano. The pot breaks and falls into the fire. Bernarda tells her that Nicolasa wouldn’t want her there. Go.

Pola tells her it is better to go. I only came to say I was sorry. I don’t have any guilt. I am not an assassin. Go, go, says Pola.

Pola tells Juliano that she is going to the posada with Alejo. OK. You have done enough. Go rest. Did Cata have anything to do with Nicolasa’s death? You are the only person I trust, he says. Nicolasa didn’t die from childbirth. She heard me and your sister. She jumped. She thought there was something between me and your sister. She was right. I will never go near your sister. I want to thank you. It sounds like you are saying goodbye, says Pola. Promise me you will not run away. I will do what I promised, says Juliano.

How did it go, asks Domingo. Good. Then why do you look like that. I wanted to show that the owners care about the slaves. You are not capable of going with another man, are you? Cata says you know that is a no. But, she still goes to sleep on the floor.

Pola leads Alejo to the room in the posada. He says he doesn’t need anything more. I am going to have butterflies in my stomache knowing you are sleeping so close to me, says Pola. Soon we will sleep together, he says. I must say that the way the slaves and you act together makes me uncomfortable. But, I understand, and it is a feeling inspires me.

Now, will you do me a favor? I will not take advantage of the situation. He asks permission to kiss her. I would die if you didn’t do that. If conditions are favorable, every time you see me do it without permission. What is the difference, she says. We are going to be man and wife.

Gov. Tacón is having a meeting with certain nobles and Francisco. The best thing we can do is to permit these Americans to form this junta government that they want. Francisco says this is brilliant. He did it without spilling a drop of blood. Then, says the governor, we will apply the punishment they deserve. Will it be worse than the punishment given to the Quiteños? That is not up to me. That is up to them. Aren’t you afraid they will send their army, asks Francisco. I am prepared, says the governor.

Aren’t you going to come with me, Pola asks Cata. I just said I would think about it. I am not going with you. Domingo is not going to change, says Pola. It will get worse. If I go to Santa Fé, people will think I am a bad wife. No one will help me. Pola: You aren’t going to go to Juliano?

El Mundo de Telemundo, Week of July 18, 2011: Discuss Amongst Yourselves

HEREDEROS - Gran Final
This train wreck finally ended. Can you believe that this was the one day my TiVo failed to record the program? I had to go over to my Mom's to watch it. But I had to turn down the sound at the end, it was so ghastly. This was perfect example of how bad writing can ruin the advantages of a talented and attractive cast and a beautiful setting. And they didn't really have any excuse. This novela was based on a Chilean one called Los Hijos del Monte. After Herederos had been on for a while, I looked up Hijos. Based on the two sentence descriptions of each episode, Herederos followed its plot or should I say non-plot exactly except for the fact that Emilio del Monte wasn't dead. Once Emilio/Pablo showed up, the story veered away from that of Hijos but by then it was too late. No basis in the story or characters had been laid for new plot developments. The two villians - Jose and Julieta were pathetic. There were zero interesting or surprising developments about the back story of the brothers, or the loans Juan made to Miguel and his business problems, or anything. It was pathetic and the finale was typical.

Consuelo tells Johnny that she was raped and he says nothing. She decides to leave and sort of goes into labor.

Paula finds out her baby was stolen. Fortunately, Consuelo shows up at the hospital to tell her that she saw Julieta leaving with a baby. Juan calls out the cavalry and there is a lot of footage of guys and then Paula too, driving around. There is an exciting chase scene when Jose threatens to throw the baby off a cliff and then he and Julieta leap to their deaths as Juan grabs the baby. Ooops, wrong show. No excitement. We just see Juan demand the baby from a stopped car and then being handed the baby without protest.

Meanwhile Consuelo is in labor in the hospital waiting room and no one is helping her. 'Don't they have any staff at this hospital? asked my Mother. Johnny tells Consuelo that he will love the baby like his own child. Finally, Consuelo is wheeled off to the delivery room. The baby is two months premature. Are there any problems with that? Apparently not.

Then we pop ahead one year to have a repeat of the opening episode - an engagement party. They show Juan, mercifully hatless, on a horse with the baby but fortunately don't show him galloping along like that. Lupe and Berta are both preggers and Gaspar has had a complete personality transformation. Beatriz is happy with Pedro; Adela is with Efrain. Only poor Amador gets nobody.

There is an extremely stupid attempt at suspense when two women arrive by helicopter. One of them who is dressed in red like Paula when she arrived announces that she is Lulu del Monte, Juan's sister. But it's just a joke by those funny del Monte brothers. The other woman is a judge come to marry Juan and Paula.

We see Nacho and Jose working on the rockpile in prison. Then Julieta in jail for five years. But her lawyer looked just like Juan and he proposed marriage to her. So we don't even get the satisfaction of having Julieta die. I was hoping she might collapse after giving back the baby and then die of a recurrent brain tumor. No such luck.

I guess I'll watch Flor Salvaje. The others are too far along to start on now.

Over to you.

Teresa Fri 7/15/11 #98 OOOH-LA-LA!

CASA ALCAZAR: The B!tch is Back: Juana’s just met Vanesssssssa and has lost her cookies. Damn! Juana thought Hector was a free man? Vanessa admits she’s been gone a long time but she’s back now. She tells Juana that Hector didn’t mention her at all even though they had a very long talk catching up on things. Juana tells her she’s his friend and gathers her cookies and broken platter and humbly walks away. Her body language says it all and I cringe at her humiliation.

HOSPITAL: Aida tells Mariano all about the fraud and she’s come to the conclusion that Daddykins must’ve married Mayra only for her money. Her grandfather took him into the business and taught him everything about the notario so he could run the family business and look how he’s repaid her! It’s not the money, Mayra has enough to live the rest of her life as a queen, but imagine the horror of discovering the person you love betraying you. She tells Mariano she loves him very much but she wouldn’t put up with any type of betrayal. She understands their relationship started out as a way to forget about Teresa and Paulo but now everything’s changed for her and she’s fallen in love with him. Mariano tells her he cares for her too (doesn’t say, “te amo”) but she shouldn’t let her parents’ troubles cause her to doubt him. She’s sobbing on his shoulder.

CASA CHAVEZ: Hector’s come looking for Juana and Pati tells him she was on her way to his house. Hector’s screwed. Ruh-roh! He knows this is bad.

Mariano and Aida are out walking and she explains they’re not planning on telling anyone about the fraud, not even Genoveva (good call). Mayra calls her from Ruben’s office, saying she’s come to confront him. They hang up as he walks in. He immediately tries to soften her up, telling her they shouldn’t argue. She tells him there’s nothing to argue about, she’ll never trust him again. She doesn’t need explanations from him – he’s the worst man in the world. She can’t stand to be near him and decides it’s best to work from home. He gives her the line that Amadeo had to leave unexpectedly due to a family emergency. She tells him she’s aware of that and therefore will move all her documents to her home. He pleads with her not to leave the notaría. He wants her close to him. That’s the last thing she wants and she flings her wedding ring at him, calling him a liar (mentiroso) and a disgrace (desgraciado)! He comes toward her as though he’s going to kiss/hug her but she stops him cold with a slap. He explains again that he didn’t know about Espe’s pregnancy. It’s unfair that she should leave him for that. He attempts to come near her again and again she slaps him and screams incoherently. An office worker comes in ready to tape up the boxes that she’s already packed. Ruben asks him to leave them alone. Ruben tells her it makes no sense to work from home and besides Amadeo isn’t in Mexico. He offers to help her while he’s gone. ¡NO, RUBEN! He’s disappointed her so much she can’t stand being near him, much less work with him. That “estupida” who believed all your lies has died. She leaves and Office Guy comes back in before Ruben can get to the boxes. Ruben stands there as Office Guy begins to seal the boxes, symbolically sealing his fate as well. dun-dun-DUNNNN!

CASA CHAVEZ: Hector frantically calls home and Maura, the maid, gives him the bad news that Juana was there and spoke with Vanessssssa. He decides to wait at the Chavez’ for her to come home.

CASA ALCAZAR: Aurora is looking for Mommy Dearest, who comes in wearing an apron (oh, please). She’s been helping Maura bake Aurora’s favorite. She mentions Juana’s visit and Aurora fills her in, telling her of Hector’s marital plans. Vanessa adamantly claims he can’t marry because they’re still married. Aurora explains that after searching for her for years, he divorced her. Aurora’s all, “no puede ser”. He couldn’t have divorced her! Aurora wonders why she seems so upset. Does mumsy still love daddykins? Vanessa explains after so many years she thought that love had died but well, she asks Aurora not to listen to her and not tell Hector anything. When is he planning to marry that woman? Vanessa’s not surprised at Juana’s reaction when she explained who she is. She describes Juana as “muy humilde” (very humble) and feels she has no place next to her (meaning her station in life). Aurora tells her she really cares for Juana and she’s a good woman. Vanesssssssa hisses back that to be the wife of a hospital director, one needs to be more than a good woman. She doesn’t understand what Hector saw in her. Aurora, who doesn’t like this side of Mommy Dearest, reminds her that she was gone for a long time. Vanessa recovers and changes the subject and asks what their plans are for today. She chats on about getting to know one another, their likes and dislikes. Aurora seems impactada by her snobbery.

JUANA’S APT: Hector comes in and she promptly tells him she has nothing to say to him. Yes, she’s met Vanessa, his wife who’s returned and is now in his house. He can have her. She kicks him out forthwith! Hector pounds on the door. She yells at him to leave. He pleads with her to at least let him explain. She doesn’t want to hear anything he has to say. She’s at the sink filling a bucket with water as she tells him she doesn’t care if Vanessa is Aurora’s mother. She opens the door only to throw the bucket of water in his face and threatens to call the police. Poor Hector. He peeks in through the window, a la Cutberto. Juana’s now crying and tells him Vanessa introduced herself as his wife. She also heard Maura explain that her clothes and belongings were already in place. “But not in my room,” Hector explains. He tells of how Vanessa showed up unexpectedly, Aurora invited her to stay, and he’s going to stay in a hotel. He hadn’t had a chance to explain to Vanessa about Juana. They only spoke of the past and Aurora. Juana’s not backing down and wonders what her game is, for them to return to the “happy family”? How many times does he have to tell her there’s nothing between him and Vanessa? Vanessa will only be there for a few days and he’s only doing this for his daughter. It’s very clear to Juana that Vanessa wants to get back with him or she wouldn’t have introduced herself as his wife. He swears that the only woman who interests him is Juana. Is he sure, because she thinks Vanessa is very attractive and elegant. Even so, he says, he’s not interested in her. Juana’s not so sure or he would’ve mentioned her to Vanessa. It’s time they take a break. After Vanessa leaves, they can talk -- if she’s still available.

FERNANDO’S APT: Luisa has surprised him with candles and champagne to celebrate an anniversary of sorts. She jokes he may have forgotten. Of course he didn’t and he hands her necklace, promising that on each anniversary he’ll give her another piece of the set. He pours the champagne and tells her she makes him feel like the most loved man in the world. Smoochies.

CASA CACERES: Mariano and Aida arrive after an apparently good time. She tells him she’s very happy and proposes they move in together. Mariano seems to be going over the Man Law Guidebook wondering how he’s gonna get out of this one. Aida notices his hesitation. He stammers and stutters that her proposal caught him off guard and is a bit rushed (precipitada). He’s not in a position to offer her anything or a place to share with her. She begins to offer to get a place but he cuts her off. It’s not just that, he says. When he’s ready, it will be in a place he can afford, plus, this is too soon. Everything’s cool the way it is now. She tells him to forget about it until he’s ready.

GENO’S HOUSE OF SOFAS: Ruben is furious about Mayra taking all her files home. He doesn’t know how he’ll be able to hide the fraud without those documents. He really needs Geno’s help. She doesn’t know how seeing as Mayra has forbidden her to mention his name in her presence. He wonders if Mayra has found out about the fraud. He tells her to talk with Aida and confirms she spoke with Fernando about pushing up the construction timeline. He’s frantic that this project comes through.

PARIS! Teresa’s on the phone with Amadeo. He’s told her of Aida’s plan not to let Ruben know they’ve discovered the fraud. Teresa instructs him to stay in D.F. and stay close to Aida to find out what she’s up to. She tells him this will also help him make sure he won’t have any problems. Arturo comes in looking all hawt in his pajama bottoms (ay papi). He tries to talk her into undressing and staying in the room today. She prefers to do more sightseeing. Smoochies.

FERNANDO’S APT: Fer has talked to mumsy who’s told him to let her oversee the Luna Turqueza construction and not bother coming to Cancun unless they’re coming on vacation. They both agree they have too much work here in D.F. He says anywhere with her by his side is enough for him. Smoochies.

OUI, OUI, PARIS! More shots of them sightseeing. At dinner, she tells him she’s so happy here she wonders if it would be possible for them to live here, away from everything and everyone. He tells her that’s not possible due to their work and families. But he’s very happy to hear her say that because it means she wants to live the rest of her life with him. She looks at him as though she’s warming to the idea.

VECINDAD: Refugio continues to suggest to Juana that she go after Cutberto. Juana repeats the “I-can’t-give-him-children” story. She breaks into tears when she recounts when Aurora told her she thought of her as a mother. Refugio tells her she’s being silly to think that just because Vanesssssa is back on the scene, that doesn’t mean Aurora will stop having feelings for her. Juana thinks now that Vanessssa is back, Aurora will have her mother to talk to, to comprehend her.

CASA CACERES: Aida congratulates Mayra for moving her documents. If Ruben discovers there’s an audit in her holdings, he’s capable of leaving the country. Mayra doesn’t want him to escape but wonders if Aida wants to pursue this because he’s her father. This starts Aida on one of her screeching rants. She’d be angry at anyone who stole from her mother. The fact that it’s her father only makes it worse. She can’t forgive him. He deserves the worst of punishments. She just wants justice for her mother.

VECINDAD: Aurora has come by to visit Juana, rocking a 60’s look. Juana’s happy her mother has returned but it’s very clear she no longer needs a second mamá. On the contrary, says Aurora. No one has shown her such love as Juana has, even her own mother. She’s realizes Juana and others know her so much better than her mother. Juana says in time things will change. Aurora pleads Hector’s case, telling her he really loves her and the idea to have Vanessa stay at the house was entirely her own idea (Aurora’s). Please hear him out. Juana tells her there’s no need to intercede for Papá. She made it very clear to him yesterday and all the times she hung up on him today. It’s best he stop insisting and sending flowers. Aurora tries again, telling her that her father wanted to talk to Vanessa before talking to her. Hector and Vanessa have agreed to leave the past buried for her sake but she can’t stand to see Papá so sad. It isn’t fair that while she got her mother back, he’s lost the woman he loves.

PARIS: Arturo presents Teresa with a vial of perfume made specifically for her at the perfumery they visited earlier. It was made based on her personality (hmmm, a bit of shark fin, ground shark teeth, poison ivy, and oh yes, a drop of Love Potion #9). He’s named it…….”Teresa” They share a romantic kiss and she seems quite taken by the gesture. Arturo is making all the right moves as long as he’s alone with her in Europe, but what will happen once they return?

CASA ALCAZAR: Hector confronts She-Wolf Vanessa, telling her he’s said all he’s going to say to her, except for one important thing: Juana is the woman he loves. Vanessa reacts as though she’s going to cry and Hector tells her “Puhleeze, no drama.” He doesn’t believe anything of her. She asks him not to be so hard on her and to try to understand her. She never thought it would hurt so much to discover he’d divorced her. A tear falls as she hugs him. Aw man, he hugs her back and HE starts to cry. Vanessa knows Juana broke it off and she thought that…….Hector stops her and tells her Juana is very angry because he hadn’t told her about Vanessa’s return. That was his mistake. He first had to clear things up with Vanessa. She wonders why he didn’t tell her about Juana.

JUANA’S APT: Aurora feeds Juana the line that her mother had been in South America and didn’t have enough money to get back to her, but she never stopped thinking of her. Juana’s very happy for her and hopes she’ll enjoy this time she has with her. Aurora explains she was so happy to know she still loved her that she didn’t think twice about inviting her to stay or talking it over with Papá. Hector told Juana how much he had loved Vanessa and how it hurt to lose her. So now, who knows what will happen. Aurora would love nothing more than to have her parents together but she knows that’s impossible. He loves Juana. Juana’s not so sure. If he loved her, he would’ve told her immediately of Vanessa’s reappearance, or not allow her in his house, or leave himself. Aurora repeats that was all her fault. She apologizes and asks her to please speak with Papá. Juana has nothing to forgive. She feels Hector has some unresolved issues with Vanessa and it’s best he clear those up before their relationship goes any further. She tearfully tells Aurora she will always be there if she needs her.

CASA ALCAZAR: Hector tells Vanessa his personal life is none of her business. He will only discuss his life as it pertains to Aurora. Vanessa tells him he’s wrong. She cares very deeply about him and about what happens to him. He was her husband and the father of her childl. No, he says. If she really cared, she wouldn’t have run off with another! She can save her comments! He turns and walks away from her and she cries but I can’t help seeing something sinister brewing. Am I wrong?

CASA CHAVEZ: Juana tells Refugio about Aurora’s visit. Oh, brother, she keeps telling her to go after Cutberto and now she tells her to give Hector another chance. The presence of the first wife does pose a problem but Refugio thinks Cutberto is the real reason behind refusing Hector.

PARIS: COULD IT BE? DOES ARTIE FINALLY MAKE IT TO PARADISE? They arrive back to their room and Teresa takes another whiff of “Teresa”. Art partakes of the scent on her wrist. Then she dabs more on her neck, then on the crook of her elbow. He kisses both in turn and then the real make-out session begins and they end up on the bed…….aaaaaand we fade to another scene.

HOSPITAL: Aurora tells Mariano of her conversation with Juana, trying to convince her to make up with her dad. Mariano thinks Juana may be right. Vanessa not only needs to clear things up with Aurora, but also with Hector. She wonders if it’s possible they can rekindle their love after all this time. But she’s sad to see Hector so heartbroken over Juana. She wishes there was something she could do. Mariano advises it’s best she leave it to them to figure it out.

PARIS: OOOH-LA-LA! The Eagle has landed! Arturo and Teresa are snuggling post coochie-coochie. He kisses her and tells her he loves her. She just kisses him back. He has another surprise for her. She closes her eyes as he reaches for a jewelry box and behold! One big a$$ diamond ring. He tells her “La tercera es la vencida” (Vencida=conquered but the saying is equal to ‘third one’s the charm’). He’s already given her 2 engagement rings. With the first 2, he promised to marry her. With this third ring, he promises his love for the rest of his life. She’s muy feliz! He asks if she really liked it. Of course she does! She tells him this trip has helped her discover him. This trip, this ring, signifies a new stage (etapa) for her and for them. She kisses him passionately. They resume the smoochfest as we bid them farewell for the weekend.

Cuando Me Enamoro #64 Friday 7/15/11 A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words (and a Tree Carving is Worth a Thousand More)

Old wounds start to rip open for Jero as he watches the exhumation of his brother's body.

Renata sits down with Padre to ask if a marriage made out of revenge is valid. Padre says a marriage without love, respect, and a sense of family can hardly be called a marriage. It's possible for such a marriage to be annulled.

Agustin is mighty proud of himself for naming his new wine "Renacer En Ti" (Reborn in You). "That's what you are going to be, Renata. Reborn in me." Ohhh so creepy. Arely comes looking for him. She wants to make weekend plans with him but Augie laughs in her face. "If you're bored, you can go back to Mexico. In fact, it would be better if you did. Separating would for the best." Damn that's cold.

Blanca steps into Gonzo's office. He already knows about the situation and says Honorio's decision is final. Blanca whines about personal feelings getting in the way of business (wouldn't she be the utmost authority on that front). Gonzo supports Hon; there's no way they can trust Blanca with their business anymore. Her Battiness claims that Hon fired her because of he can't control his feelings for her. Blanca tries to butter Gonzo up by playing the victim and declaring what an honor it was to work for the Empresa.

Honorio writhes over the Blanca Battle in his office. "Constanza, how can you ever forgive me?"

Chema has returned to work at the Centro. Coni is surprised he's back so soon but she is happy to see him. Coni tells Chema she is off to the hospital to donate blood; Andrecito isn't doing well and they need donors. Chema rushes to finish work so he can join her.

Roberta's bachelorette party kicks off without much fanfare. Only Fina, Selene, and two unnamed amigas of Fina show up. (How much do you wanna bet Fina had to blackmail these ladies into attending. There's no way Fina has any friends besides the voices in her head.)

Selene slips into Berta's bedroom to pick up some stuff they forgot for the party. She comes across the CD that has the "incriminating" pictures of Coni and Chema on it. Upset with Berta, Sele takes measures into her own hands by putting the disc into the computer, pushing a few buttons, and hitting send. Uh-oh.

Hon gives Coni a call; he wants to have a serious talk with her. She's on her way to the hospital, so it will have to wait. Hon hears Chema in the background of the call and hangs up with a curious look. Suddenly a notice pops up on Hon's computer. Can you guess what he finds? Gold stars for the day if you guessed the pictures of Coni and Chema! Hon is impactado at what he sees and even more impactado that the pictures came from Berta's email address.

Blanca boo-hoos all over Adriana about the injustice of it all. Honorio told Blanca he loved her and now he chucked her out on her backside. He said he was going to leave Coni because there had been so much trouble between them after finding out Adri was his daughter. Adri falls right into the batty trap.

Berta refuses to take a call from Honorio. Selene knows Hon must be calling about the pictures. Sele pats herself on the back for setting Roberta up.

Honorio stares at the pictures, growing ever more depressed as he does.

Adri had no idea about Honorio's involvement with Blanca. She cries that Honorio is a selfish guy who would rather run away than face up to his responsibilities. After all, that is what happened between him and Adri's mother. She is sure Honorio must have cheated on Coni more than once. Blanca might be crazy but she is mighty good at this game. Adri starts to doubt just how honorable Honorio really is.

Arely follows Augie into the field. There's no reason for them to break up since Nata and Jero are back together. Arely knows that Augie has a thing for Nata; she wants to stay with him. Augie says Arely needs a man who can commit and that man isn't him. Adios.

Carlos and Jero make a slow walk back into the casa. Matilde bounds in with endless energy and Carlos pulls her aside to talk about what happened between them. They could have a future together. Mati doesn't want to hurt Carlos and says her future can't include him. Just when you thought she couldn't get any sillier, she turns the hunk down!

Nata thinks about the good times between her and Jero: the wedding, the Enrique concert, their "honeymoon", and the grape-stomping. She openly sobs.

Ines gets a note from a nurse that Isidro gave her. Regina reads the letter aloud. Isidro doesn't want Ines to risk her health by joining him in Andrecito's room. Ines understands and they touch hands through the glass.

Humberto, the young bullfighter, apologizes again for what happened to Antonio. Tony says to forget it. Besides, he has worked out how to keep Regi by his side (now that he's had all this time to think, I would imagine). He muses about his rival for Regi's affections and how everything is out of control now.

Coni and Chema arrive at the hospital. Ines is moved to tears that they came to donate blood. Chema comforts Ines, clearly endearing himself to Coni even more.

Matilde runs into Nata in the hallway and tells her about Rafa's body having been exhumed. Nata takes the tray from Mati so she can give it to Jero herself. Nata is ready for a fight but cools it once she sees Jero zonked on the bed with a bunch of pictures of Rafa nearby.

Nata picks up one of the photos and wonders why Jero never told her about Rafa sooner. It would have solved so many of their problems. She wishes she knew who the real woman was who hurt Rafa so badly. Nata climbs onto the bed with Jero and strokes his face. "You know I love you, Jero. I love you more than I will ever love anyone else. It hurts." Nata whispers to a sleeping Jero. She cuddles up to Jero without his ever waking.

Gonzo and Matias show up at Berta's pathetic party. Why do her decorations look more suited to a five-year-old girl's birthday party than anything else? Fina's amigas suck up to Gonzo; they're really a couple of duds. Coni puts in an appearance as well but only for a minute. She relates Andrecito's condition to Gonzo and Mat. They're bummed about it and tell Coni to have a good night. Berta shows Matias off to her guests.

Constanza's day goes from bad to worse when she arrives home to find Blanca sitting on the couch. (Do these people not have locks?!?!) Coni isn't one for playing games and asks Blanca what she wants. "I want to talk about your husband. He fired me today because he couldn't handle the fact that he and I are lovers."

Meanwhile, someone slides a drink down the bar for Honorio. He pounds it down in one swig. If he only knew how much worse it's going to get.

It's time for a showdown! Coni questions Blanca's motives in showing up at her house. Blanca wants Coni to know what an unfaithful wretch Honorio is but Coni doesn't want to hear a word of it. Blanca tries to play the same trick she pulled on Adri but Coni sees right through it. "Stop playing the victim, Blanca! You messed with a married man. The repercussions are your responsibility." Atta girl!

Blanca inches dangerously close to Coni and reaches her hand toward Coni's throat. "You are *just* the type of wife who would ignore the signs that your husband is cheating. You ignore it so you can keep your social status!" We're reaching new heights of crazy b!tchdom.

Right when you think Blanca might try to choke Constanza, she (Batty) shoves her aside instead. Coni yells for Blanca to get out. Nonplussed, Blanca fluffs her phony curls and struts out. Coni crumbles into a heap of tears. Poor thing better check the kitchen for boiling bunnies.

Jero awakes surprised to find himself wrapped in Nata's arms. He hops out of bed. Nata stirs and asks why Jero had Rafa's body exhumed. Jero wanted to have an autopsy done to be sure about the cause of death. Nata swears Rafa was her good friend and wonders why Jero doubts her. "Because you've never been honest with me!" Jero says. "And you've been honest with me?!" Nata counters. Nata swears she will have proof within the next few days that he has been wrong about her all along.

Alone in her room, Nata gets a text from someone. "Could it be?" She wonders. Meanwhile, Augie holds his own phone and says that the time has come.

Constanza pounces as soon as Honorio gets home. She asks why he never came home the night before and he cuts across her to ask how long she's been fooling around behind his back. (Gaaah. This is gonna get ugly.) Coni is incensed Hon would accuse her of such a thing. Hon tosses the proof on the table and Coni gapes as she flips through the pictures. She has no idea where the photos came from but whoever sent them had bad intentions. Honorio doesn't care where the pictures came from - he only cares about their implications. "A picture is worth a thousand words!"

Coni recalls seeing Hon and Blanca locking tongues in supposed passion. "You're right! An image can break your heart forever!" Hon asks Coni if she can honestly deny having fooled around with a boy who could be her son. "No!" Coni says. "I won't deny it. Chema and I really *are* lovers." Now that both parties are efficiently hurt, confused, and disillusioned, I think we can officially say the last ax has fallen on our once-ideal couple. Qué pena.

Nata rides over to meet Agustin, who has something to show her. It's the Tree of Love! With the Roberta & Rafael heart! Augie asks if she knows anyone named Roberta. Of course Nata does, but there's no way her sister ever knew Rafa. Augie isn't so sure. He thinks Jero might have confused things and believed Nata was Rafa's novia instead of Berta.

Fina has breakfast in bed while Berta sings the praises of their master plan. Berta is on the verge of getting married and Nata isn't invited to the wedding. Fina is still worried about Gonzo and Regina. Berta is getting tired of Fina's preoccupation with Regi but agrees to do a little digging to try to find a way to get Regina out of their lives forever.

Nata thinks Augie must be mistaken. Rafa only visited their house once and Berta and Rafa never saw each other. "Maybe that's what they wanted you to think." Augie says. Nata doesn't understand why Rafa and Berta would hide a relationship, if they had one. She needs time to digest the idea.

Jero tells Carlos that Nata is going to "prove her innocence" to him about her being La Bonita. Carlos asks what it would mean if Nata could prove it but Jero knows she can't. According to Jero, Nata is La Bonita. Fina told him. End of discussion. Carlos is skeptical. "Are you sure you're not just trying to find out if Nata still loves you?"

Augie gives Nata some time alone to mull things over. She remembers Rafa asking her if Gonzo would accept a man like him as a son-in-law. Things start falling into place for Nata. She realizes now that Rafa was afraid her padre wouldn't except Rafa as a member of the family. Nata remembers Rafa making a desperate call to her in which he asked for her support. Then Nata recalls Roberta asking her about having gone out for dinner with Rafa but Nata had to tell Berta that Rafa never showed.

Nata is conflicted. "I have to be sure that Roberta and the Roberta from the tree are the same person. I cannot accuse my sister of something she didn't do!"

Avances: Selene threatens to tell Matias that Roberta's baby is actually Rafa's. Nata finds the picture of Roberta and herself in Jero's things and calls Berta to question her about it.

Una imagen dice más que mil palabras - A picture says more than a thousand words. (Hon to Coni)
La decisión está tomada - The decision is made. (Blanca to Gonzo)
negar - to deny (Coni to Hon)
efectivamente - really/in fact (Coni to Hon)

Cuando Me Enamoro #63 Thursday 7/14/11 Exhumations, Evaluations, Exhortations, Tribulations, Realizations, but still waiting for the Termination

Viva La Bastille! Happy Bastille Day everyone. Pour yourself a glass of French wine and hunker down with a nice cheese plate, hunk of French bread, cassoulet (or all of the above) and join me in tonight’s fireworks show. And remember, if you’re out of bread then just eat cake! By the way, when I was at the wine bar tonight I asked if they had any wine from the famous Valle de Guadalupe and I got a blank stare. I fear Augie and Jero still have a way to go before their wine hits the mainstream.

Last night we left our star-crossed lovers sighing at each other through a closed door. So near and yet so far. I think Nata’s jammies are totally cool.

Moments later Nata applies more product on the bags under her eyes and recalls Jero sticking up for her in front of Matilde. I love my cover stick but I don’t think I’ve ever applied it at bedtime. More recollections of a kinder, gentler Jero, one who hugs instead of accuses.

Andrecito’s doctor tells Ines y Isidro that Andres' little body is fighting but not succeeding. Ines swears he will overcome. Doc says it depends on transfusions and medications. He recommends they find as many donors as they can as soon as possible.

The private investigator meets with Gonzo to discuss the mysterious person who is tormenting Regina. PI says there are no new clues, but they are operating under the theory that this Pepa has changed her identity. Gonzo gets a call about a family gathering that evening and shows the PI a photo of his family, his wife FINA, daughter RENATA, and all the rest. Once again we are...so near and yet so far.

Fina’s stoolie (the lawyer guy at the company) calls to tell her he has news about Regina that he cannot reveal over the phone. They plan to meet in an hour.

Cata gripes to Regina yet again about Gonzo being involved in her life. Regina just wants to forget about Pepa and go to Andrecito’s school to drum up potential donors. She thanks Cata for saving her life, she would have died from the antifreeze mochacchino had Cata not found her. Cata shuts it (for once) and gives hugs and blessings to her daughter.

Oh goodie, we're back in the wine country. Jero tells Carlos he was blown away by the fervor of Nata’s sadness at Rafa’s tomb. Jero actually suggests that with Nata’s rotten relationship with her mom perhaps Fina was lying to him about her relationship with Rafa in order to destroy Nata. Dude, listen to yourself! But no, this dolt wouldn’t know the truth if it spit in his face. He asks Carlos, what reason would Fina have to lie to him? Oh oh oh! Pick me, I know the answer. Because you're an incredible dumbass, right?

Matilde goes to Nata’s room to thank her for preventing Jero from tossing her out on her shapely but sorry behind. However she says she’ll always dislike Nata for being La Bonita. Nata denies it. Oh yes you are, sez Mati, YOU’RE the one who betrayed my boss Rafael, YOU’RE the one responsible for his death, and YOU’RE the one causing all of Jeronimo’s distress!

Selene ambushes Constanza to tell Cons that compared to her own supple youthfulness Cons is just an old witch and can never compete with her. Cons tells the offensive little turd to beat it. Sele commands Cons to stay away from Chema because she doubts her husband would be happy to hear Cons is interested in a guy young enough to be her son.

Nata tells Mati that yes, she knew Rafa but they were never novios. Mati, arms akimbo, smirks that she saw with her own eyes the letter that Nata wrote telling Rafa he would never be at her level, and after everything he did for her. Nata insists she is totally confused. Mati says she saw the photo. What photo, asks Nata? Nata demands to see that letter and the photo. Mati reveals that Jero or Carlos has them and Jero knows that Nata is her brother’s murderer. Nata doesn’t understand anything the little twerp is talking about so she stalks out saying she’ll clear this up right now. Mati smiles like the Cheshire Cat, another successful morning on the job, thus clearing up the mystery of what she actually does at the hacienda.

Nata runs out the door, unfortunately just missing Jero and Carlos who are on their way to coordinate Rafa’s exhumation.

Over at Empresas Monterrubio Adri asks Daniel if their old employee Rafael Gutierrez ever went out with anyone. Matias butts in and pipes up “Renata.” Daniel agrees that’s what the chisme was. Matias wants to know why she asks. “Because he’s dead and it turns out he’s Jero’s half brother.” Cara impactada de Matias.

Back in the bedroom Matilde’s chronic logorrhea has taken control of the pudding between her ears. She harps to Nata that she should return to the DF because she is making everyone at La Bonita so unhappy. Apparently Matilde = everyone. She claps her hands and offers to help Nata pack. Nata thinks for a moment and says yes she’ll leave, but not before she clears up a few things. And guess what, she needs Mati’s help. Mati scoffs why should she do that when she (Mati) hates Renata even more than Jero? Nata suggests because it will give Mati a clear path to Jeronimo. She’ll prove her innocence then leave La Bonita forever. Mati can’t resist. Nata’s first instructions are that Mati can’t say a word about this to anyone. Uh oh, I see a problem with this plan already. Nata insists she will show all of them that they have been wrong about her.

Matias tells Adri and Daniel he knew that Jero was coming to Mexico for his brother’s wedding but he never knew that Rafa was his brother. Adri tells them that Nata and Rafa were good friends but that’s it. Matias thinks there is something fishy about this whole thing, especially Jero’s behavior, and he wants to call Jero to demand an explanation. Adri begs him not to and Daniel agrees he shouldn’t get involved in another couple’s business.

Nata pets the beautiful Gitana and thought-bubbles that Jero didn’t marry her for love, but because he thought she killed his brother, to get vengeance and make her pay. How could Jero be so cruel to her when she married him for love? She’s innocent of everything! Laz sees her crying and says something about Gitana losing weight because of the trip? Eh? Nata thought it was just her imagination. Gitana needs to get her strength back before the trip back to the DF. Oh no, have horses ever had leukemia on these shows? Now I’m worried about Gitana. Or maybe the horse is preggers? But I digress. Laz wonders what Nata means about going back. Isn’t Nata happy that Jero brought Gitana to Ensenada?

Nata asks Laz whether Rafael ever mentioned that name of his La Bonita. Laz mutters he doesn’t like to discuss that subject. Nata sadly watches him walk away.

Doctor Dingleberry (thanks Carlos) is at Cruz de Amor telling Augie that Matilde told Kari at first she thought Rafa’s novia was named Roberta, but then she found out she was wrong because there was no Roberta, it was someone else, not sure who. Augie remembers when he and Arely discovered the Roberta Y Rafael heart and he told her any man who loses his heart over a woman is stupid. Augie licks his lips in pleasure as the pieces start falling into place.

HR or company lawyer guy brings Blanca’s termination letter to Honorio. Hons optimistically tells the air that momentarily she will be out of his office and life forever, never to return. Silly boy, even real life is never that simple.

Cut to an evil-looking letter opener jamming itself into a locked desk. Nope, not Blanca, but rather Matilde who apparently is enthusiastically responding to work direction by searching out the photo and letter. Jero and Carlos interrupt her “work” and she jumps up and pretends to dust the desk. They don’t seem to notice that this is highly suspicious behavior for our little hellcat. Mati mentions that Nata is out riding all morning and Jero says good because he and Carlos have to go out. “Where?” asks Mati. Jero brushes her off and she gushes her work is done and rushes out of the room. Carlos comments on her odd behavior and Jero suggests it’s because Carlos tried to kiss her. (Not because she actually seemed to be working as I suggested.) Carlos admits he loves her which we already know because the Gerardo Urquiza banda music is playing loud and clear. Jero thinks it’s great, just don’t break your heart over it. Funny comment coming from him.

Augie (cue frenetic violin music) just happens to (figuratively) run into Nata while riding. (She’s not on Gitana, what’s up with that? Things are not looking good for the white horse.) Augie asks how she’s doing at La Bonita, she can confide in him. She firmly tells him she doesn’t want to confuse things, they are only friends. He insists. She gives him the 411 about Jero believing she’s the woman who drove his brother to suicide. Augie tells her to let him help her, he’s got many contacts in the area, trust him, hissssss.

OK folks, here it comes, calling Blanca Alvarado to the chopping block. She enters Honorio’s office, bodacious tatas first, and seductively takes a seat. He hands her the termination letter, saying it includes a generous payout. She reads, smirks, slams it down on the desk and says, “You know what this is? Prepotencia! “ (I think she means arrogance withing the context of power or domination.) “Typical for a boss who has lost personal interest in an employee!” He clarifies that he has never had a personal interest in her. Sign please and leave. More smirking as she insists she knows the rules. She’ll take the letter, review it at her leisure and then contact him for the negotiations. “I’ll see you later my love,” she coos, hefting her bosom victoriously , kissing her finger and brushing it across his lips. Poor Hons looks like he’s gonna hurl but the guy maintains.

Alfonsina is at the chemists gloomily purchasing her pregnancy test. Doctor Dingbat sees her and gleefully approaches until he catches sight of the box. Ruh Roh, his already white face turns a lighter shade of pale.

Roberta recalls an earnest Rafa on his knees and asking for her hand in marriage. She holds the ring and calls him stupid, hacienda La Bonita should have been hers. “You were all mine but it didn’t matter to you.”

Augie rides to The Tree and recalls Rafael up in the branches. He climbs up to the branch, is convinced that Rafa made the carving and chuckles that La Bonita isn’t Renata, but rather Roberta Monterrubio, the sister of Renata.

Matilde reports to Renata that she couldn’t find the goods in Jero’s office. He showed up but said he would be out all morning, didn’t say where. Nata asks if there is a spare car available to go into town.

Augie continues verbally working out the puzzle. Perhaps Jero fell in love with Renata but his thirst for vengeance is greater. This is his opportunity to bring Renata into his life and he’s not going to waste it! I know Augie’s supposed to be a bad guy but hunky, a vintner, one of the smarter characters? And he wants to rescue Renata from Jerko? The writers are making it tough for us.

Fina meets her pet stoolie at a restaurant and he comments on her beauty. Oh poor guy, I hadn’t realized he was blind. We see the PI stroll in after her and casually look around. Stoolie tells Fina that Gonzo has joined forces with Tony on Regina’s behalf. PI takes a camera from his pocket and starts snapping pictures. Stoolie caresses Fina’s shoulder while she gripes about her crappy, neglectful husband. He tells her he loves her, ewwwww! She thought bubbles that she needs allies so instead of going harpy she coyly tells him she’s a married woman who would never cheat on her husband. He tells her he’s loved her since the first moment he saw her. Their kiss is captured on film.

Regina goes to Andrecito’s school and talks to the very attractive principle Miss Christy about pumping everyone for transfusions. (Heh, sorry, I couldn’t resist.) Miss Christy says she will be the first donor.

Cut to the hospital where there is much weeping and consternation over Andrecito’s waning health. I feel bad for Ines but if Andres wakes up to see mommy kneeling, wailing and praying outside his window it’s not going to be good for his frame of mind.

Adri, now sporting the odious pink eye shadow, calls Nata to report that a lot of people in the company believe she (Nata) was Rafa’s girlfriend, including Gonzo and Matias. Nata tells her that Jero also believes it plus he believes she is the infamous La Bonita who caused Rafael’s death. That’s why she’s got to find the real La Bonita so she can clear up this mess.

Cut to La Bonita who is at her más bonita appointment. Her hairdresser exclaims at her luck. Most of his clients complain that there aren’t any good men and here she is preparing for one of society’s biggest parties, her wedding. He calls her Bonita and she recalls Rafa’s words again, that he wanted to shout to the world that he loves her. “How could you say that when you wouldn’t stay with me?”

Matias tells Gonzo the juicy gossip the Rafael Guttierez is Jero’s half brother. Gonzo always thought Rafa was a bit unstable (really?) but to kill himself? Poor boy. Matias insists the weirdest thing is that Jero didn’t say anything at all about his brother. His silence isn’t normal (I’ll say) and he’s worried for Renata.

Stoolie continues to woo Fina and she continues to politely rebuff him. His name is Ramiro and he wants to know when he can see her again. “After the wedding and thanks for the info on my husband” she smiles before escaping.

Why is Blanca still at work? She hasn’t been escorted out? She’s griping to Daniel that Hons fired her butt. She wonders how Adri took it and Daniel confirms that she was very affected by the news. Blanca smiles.

Adri’s in dad’s office giving it to him. When will guys get it in their heads that they can’t take any woman to bed without considering the consequences?!? She only hopes that he doesn’t pay too dearly for his night of pleasure and that Constanza will forgive his infidelity.

Sele stalks Chema and creepily gives her condolences on his mother’s death. She’d love to console him personally. Now. He politely brushes past her and says he has something to do. “With whom? That old bag Constanza?” He grabs her arms and tells her he’s had enough of her insults and her company. He doesn’t care about her at all! She calls him a “cook” as if it’s a big insult. In return he calls her a cualquiera. “Vas a pagar, te juro,” she says, falling back on an old favorite. (I promise you’ll pay!)

Alfonsina sits in the vineyard and cries to God, “No, I can’t be pregnant!”

Kari runs into Nata in town and excitedly reports she and Doc Ding Dong are going to adopt. Renata advises that she hopes Kari’s marital happiness isn’t depending on this baby. Kari asks and Renata reports that things at La Bonita are going very badly. She’s thinking that there is no hope for her marriage or her relationship with Jero.

The very sad song “When a Friend Leaves” accompanies Rafa’s exhumation. Jero and Carlos stand by and we get to see numerous, as in way too many, shots of Jero in various stages of intense grief. The End.

Avances: Whoa, Augie shows Renata the infamous tree branch heart? I can’t believe it.

Dicho of the Day, dedicated to Renata:
Ahora es cuando, chile verde, le has de dar sabor al caldo
= Now is the time, green chili, to give your flavor to the broth. The moment has come to pull yourself together, act with resolution and show who you are and what you can do.

Triunfo del Amor #164 7/14/11 A triumph of jumping to conclusions

This just in: Jimena does know how to read. Shocker!

Gui thinks he's got Jimena by the, uh, ovaries?

Fer can't get anyone on the phone. Jerks.

Heri takes advantage of it being, in his words, a bad moment to pressure her, but hey, what the hell…"If you decide to stick with me, I need you to be 100% sure you'll be happy with me." He doesn't want her complaining later about separating her from her family. Love's a gamble Heri. And Vic's no Lady Luck.

Max shows Maria D the cell phone video footage. Ta-da! Proof that Burnie kidnapped the baby. Maria says only the cops can see this. Well, Max is looking forward to surprising Burnie.

Leonela is hanging out in the hallway at the hotel. She confesses she got fired from Televisa, and therefore doesn't have an early call. And all because of her damned alcoholism! Leo says she had it coming.

Vic wants Milagros to know that she's grateful to the 'hood for raising the ransom money. She also wants some advice from Mili, mom to mom.

Leonela says she hates and despises Gui, but at least with her job at the theater she can support herself. Doc's ears perk up when she mentions Othello. Leo waxes rhapsodic about how much one clings to something or someone when one thinks it's all one has in one's life. Doc advises her to reflect on that. Leo says loneliness is a bad counselor. She figures Doc has submerged himself in his work the way she has submerged herself in alcohol. And she doesn't think she'll get out without the hand of a friend. Or a friend with benefits.

Mili and Vic are going to talk about Maria.

Maria wants Max to spend the night, but that bed's too damn small. No, he just says he's got to go and soon they'll be together and no one can separate them.

Mili says Maria is a good kid with a good heart who's suffered enough already. Mili's sure at some point things will get straightened out between Maria and Vic. Vic feels guilty for being the fault of Maria's suffering. Mili says no one can teach you how to be a parent. You've just got to try, fail, send your kid to therapy for years…it all works out in the end.

Leo feels like Doc is the only one she can talk to, the only one who understands. Max is a grown man with his own problems and she doesn't want to unload on him. Doc tells her to rest up and tomorrow early, he'll help her find a solution to her problem. She kisses him excitedly and then apologizes for it. They take way too long to say goodbye.

Mili says she got married young, got pregnant, then her husband died young (he was a firefighter too), she devoted herself to her son. Now Juanjo's a grown man and she has to share him with Nathy. But it's cool, Nathy's like a daughter for her. And now, here she is, about to get married again. To Napo. Vic says he seems like a good person who's crazy about Mili. Mili says she accepted so she wouldn't be alone, but Juanjo will always be the most important thing in her life.

Nathy comes to visit Maria because Vic is over at Mili's house chatting. Maria gets dizzy and has to sit down. Probably because the boys are getting a sibling. Maria says no, it was different. Probably nerves.

Vic takes her leave, advising Mili that the 'hood peeps are invited to the runway show.

Now Nathy goes to visit Doc. She isn't going to give up on her degree. She's always thought women, even if they're wives and mothers, should be self-actualized. She pulls out her latest thesis revisions. She's added a couple of chapters.

Vic goes to visit PJP at work. He tells her that he went down to the registrar's office and Maria is now "Maria Desamparada Iturbide." Vic thanks him and figures Maria is happy. Vic laments that she hasn't been able to get close to Maria. PJP says she should trust in God's mercy that Maria will come around.

Os gives Fer a hard time for standing him up at dinner. Fer wants an update. Os says dinner was "fine" but he and Vic are just good friends. And also Heri showed up. Os isn't sure why. Fer is pissed that Heri screwed up her and Max's plans. Os tells her she and Max need to butt out. Fer wasn't trying to butt in…just give them a little push. Max says it's up to Vic and she'll make a decision when she's ready.

Doc takes Leo down to the director's office to convince him to re-hire Leo. She's a good actress, he hasn't reported her firing because he figures no one will watch. But he doesn't want to re-hire her either. Soooooo…..? He's just going to leave her out of the production and hope no one notices she's not there? Wow, this guy's brilliant! Leo begs for her job back. Doc says alcoholism is a sickness, but one that she can recover from with the proper treatment.

Juanjo has a surprise for Nathy. They're going shopping for baby stuff. Nathy is excited. They're going to fill the place up with kids. Please, please, please don't make me watch! Nathy announces giddily to Juanjo that Maria was dizzy yesterday. Juanjo jumps to the same wrong conclusion.

Leo swears to stay off the hooch. Doc promises, as a doc, that he'll take responsibility for Leo. She gets her job back, though the director looks like he's already regretting it.

Max shows Os the video. Just put it on You Tube, dude. It's easier. These two numbnuts decide not to tell the cops until after the runway show.

Maria gets a package…it's Alonso. Looking like crap. He doesn't want her to be sad. Uh, then don't put your deathly visage on screen telling her you're dead, you dumbass! She made him the happiest man in the world, he didn't really exist before he met her (*dying coughs*), he thought he'd be with her for the rest of his life, and it made him happy. He carries her and the baby in his dying heart. He always loved nature, so he put together a slideshow of all the pretty places he's visited. He wants her to thank Max for attempting to sacrifice himself for Alonso's happiness. He'll see her on the other side or some nonsense. (Mr. 5ft wants him to keel over already). He loves them all. Slideshow. Yeah, I'm supposed to think he had a camera on a timer everywhere they went to take pictures of the two of them together? Dude, if I promise to miss you, will you go away?

Nathy and Juanjo go baby shopping. That didn't come out right. You know what I mean. Juanjo invites her out for an ice cream. Offering a pregnant lady ice cream? Man, talk about a sure thing.

Os asks what Doc was doing at Televisa and the director fills him in. Os asks to show him something.

Fab and Luci walk in together. It's official. Finally. Too little, too late. Pip will get to work on the dress. Luci says there's no plans yet. Very sensible, says Vic. Pip says they've gotta get to work for tonight.

At Casa Burnsdown, Herself is very displeased with the designs. "Who made this?!" Jimena says Luciano doesn't have a clue about accessories, so she just whipped it up. Burnie says she's a mediocre model, not a designer. "Don't touch other people's stuff!" Rox says Jimena has tons of experience and so does she! She was a designer for Casa Victoria! And no wonder they went under, says Burnie.

Juanjo and Nathy return home with their purchases. The place is full of neighbors. Maria, Fer, and Jpito come over. Juanjo announces that Maria is preggers. She says she was dizzy yesterday, but that doesn't mean anything. Napo agrees--he's been dizzy before too. Mili says it will be Fer's turn too and there will be a ton of kids all over. Prof and Jarochas dancing FF>> Blessings for Fer and Maria.

Doc has been upgraded. He's not only the only doctor in the DF, he's the only doctor in all of Mexico. So Cruz has brought his dad to see him.

Mili fills us in on his symptoms: breathing trouble. Probably because of smoking. Not that he smokes.

Doc tells Cruz he doesn't want to say what's going on until the test results are in. Obviously it's something respiratory and Cruz needs to be patient. "So there's nothing to do?" Doc repeats they need to wait for test results.

Flurry of activity at Nueva Casa Vic. A Pippy pep talk. Maria adds a few rah-rah's. Go team!

Vic loves Armando's designs. Toni comes in to tell them they're missing the pep rally.

Os and the editing guy show the director the footage of Gui releasing the line.

Maria gets dizzy again and sits down. Everybody picks up on the whole "dizzy" thing…except Fab, who doesn't get it. Fer is excited about the dizziness and says they all think she's preggers. Pip says this means they'll be lucky. Because…she got lucky? Maria tells Pip to stow it! Fer says she's done a lot of reading and just because Maria's had one baby doesn't mean she's going to feel exactly the same with all of them. Max comes in and asks what's going on. A whole lotta speculation, that's what. Maria tells him that they're all jumping to conclusions. He gets all excited. ("Dumb Ass!" says Mr. 5ft. I concur) Hugs and congratulations, while Fer's feeling left out. Maybe it will turn out that Maria's getting sympathy pregnancy symptoms because it's actually Fer who's pregnant. She gets a call from Cruz and leaves.

Gui demands that someone bring his breakfast and the paper to his dressing room. The director wants to talk to Gui, who assumes he wants to tell him that the novela has been extended due to the popularity of his character. Gui, don't you even THINK the word "extension" around me! Nope, he's fired. Ha ha! "Me? Fired? Why?" The director starts to say he just saw…and then my DVR cuts off. No Sweet William Levy In a Kayak for me tonight!

Teresa Thu 7/14/11 #97 The Bigote is busted; and not tonight honey, we're married

Hola gente. Apologies in advance for brevity in many scenes—still getting adjusted to new job. I feel extra lame after last night’s explosive, picture-filled awesomeness from Sharkbyte. I am hoping that I will be settled in by next time and won’t need to be so slapdash on the recap. (also, fyi, I combined scenes in many places.)

Overlap from last time:
Teresa calls Amadeo and encourages him to rat out Rubigote to Maira.

New business:
Rubigote and Roots meet with Fernando to see if the construction can be sped up so they can sell the condos ASAP. He says they can double the manpower, but it’s gonna cost a lot, and they will have to borrow more money or something. The devilish duo say that all the shareholders are on board with this, so let’s go for it. Fernie is savvy enough to ask for all of this in writing.

Our newlyweds take in the sights of Paris so the production crew can get its’ money’s worth of the location shoot.

Hospital: Esperanza and Mariano talk. He explains Aida’s point of view, and Espe is very generous in her attitude towards Aida. Mariano splains that he missed his chance with Aurora, who now loves Martin, so he’s giving it a go with Aida. Coolio, sez Espe.

Rubes is all freakeando about not being able to get in touch with Amadeo. Aida walks in and tells him that she and Mari are totally for realz, so watch out. She points out that she doesn’t go around behind people’s back like SOME others.

Over in France, the newlyweds use the Arc de Triomphe to give viewerville a bit of a history lesson before they smooch.

Roots advises Aida not to get in the middle of her parents fight. “No lleves tu el divorcio” (“don’t bring the divorce (yourself)”, referencing Aida being her mom’s lawyer). Guess who’s not following that advice? Roots moves on to get the 411 on Espe’s baby and is pleased to hear the bebe is salvo. She pretends like it’s just so Aida won’t have more problems with her dad, but we know the truth. Maira comes in, gives Aida the new keys; Roots pleads for calm relations with Rubes. Maira doesn’t ask her to stop being ‘muy amiga’ (if only she knew!) with El Bi, but asks she not mention him again.

Hernan tries to convince Espe to let him pay for the hospital bill. She wants to pay him back if he does. She explains that her relationship with Rubes started by him ‘lending’ her cash to pay for little brother’s medical bills (oh yeah, remember him?). She became more and more dependent on him, until, well, you see how it turned out. Hernan points out that Rubes, unlike him, is married. Espe points out that Rubes, unlike him, is a mala persona. Awww. Hernan is so adorable.

Aurora welcomes Vanessa into the home. Aurora tells Vanessa about the Mariano saga.

Espe tells Mari about Hernan paying the bills. Mari says she should be cool with it, because she would do the same for H if the situation were reversed. He also tells her she can go home the next week if all continues well.

Aurora finishes telling her mom about Mariano/Martin blah blah blah. Vanessa is suspiciously uncomfortable when Aur asks about having to choose between two men. Hector walks in and everyone looks intensely at one another as we cut to commercial.

Pati arrives chez Juana to see the respectable widow feeling sentimental about Cutberto. She denies it, but we all know she misses him. Pati gets pretty close to the heart of the matter, but Juana changes the subject, and blah blah ensues.

Back at Aurora’s Vanessa tries to embrace Hector, but he is clearly not down with that. He says they need to talk. Vanessa agrees despite Aurora’s objections.

Aida and Mari stroll through the park and chat about Aurora and how weird it is that her mom just showed up. Mari has a bad feeling about that lady (apparently he shares the psychic ability to detect bad seeds with Oriana), and doesn’t buy what she’s selling. I love how at one point Aida says how she would never forgive someone as easily as Aurora did. That’s the understatement of the year.

Vanessa and Hector “talk”. Perhaps my favorite exchange of the show. She tells him he looks great; he hasn’t changed a bit “estas casi identico” (you’re almost identical). He disagrees, “estoy mas viejo y mas gordo” (I’m older and fatter), followed up with “y tambien mas sabio. Por eso ya no creo en ti”. (and also wiser. That’s why I don’t believe in you now.) Basically, she can’t just waltz in after all these years and be the good mother now. She says she couldn’t deal with his jealousies, which he counters were justified—that he had her investigated after she left with este tipo. Vanessa denies it, and claims that his current agitation proves that he was too much to deal with. They go back and forth, she claims innocence, he doesn’t believe her, but they come to a truce to play nice for Aurora’s sake. He tells her to stay away from him though, she’s only allowed around as Aurora’s mom. She pulls a total shark move and sidles in close to clasp his hand and give him a sincere gracias. Whoa, is she the ghost of Christmas future for Tiburoncita?

Amadeo visits Aida and Maira and tells them about Rubes defrauding Maira for millions. Maira freaks. Aida is totally on top of the situation though, and asks Amadeo not to tell Rubes that they know. He excuses himself, and Aida tells her mom that she wants to make Rubes pay!

Pati helps Juana pack for Cuernavaca and they have girl talk. She actually brings up a good point—Hector is so thoughtful towards Juana, that maybe she should do something nice for him—like surprise him at his house instead of waiting for him to come for her (as the kids say, ruh roh!).

Paris—the kids come back to the hotel all shopped out. Teresa gets a call from Amadeo that he has carried out her mission. She is totally stoked. After Artie is out of earshot, she muses that this is only the beginning of payback for all those who have wronged her.

Back at the vecindad, Juana reminds Pati not to do it with her husband while Juana is out of the house (seriously?). Juana is about to leave when a customer comes in, delaying the inevitable misunderstanding.

Vanessa and Hector tell Aurora about their truce. Hector clearly does not want to stay in the house with Vanessa, but the ladies bully him into acquiescence. Aurora goes in to hug them both (she is truly delusional), and Vanessa tries to caress Hector’s hand during the group hug; Hector pulls away. Damn, V is totally the shark from the past!

Aida confirms with Amadeo that he is going to play it cool with Rubes and continue with the Cancun vacation. She and Maira will also compensate him well for his honesty once this is all sorted out. This is working out really well for old Ammy.

Aurora asks V what she’s been up to all these years. Apparently V has been a poor hippie traveler with not enough money to make it back to Mexico. Yeah, that’s pretty much the look she’s sporting. Hector takes his leave and pointedly tells Vanessa that she has no right to know about his personal bidness. Aurora and Vanessa head off to get her settled in.

Maira lies on the couch in pure dejection. She and Aida discuss the horribleness of El Bigote. This truly is el colmo. Maira can see all the excuses for all his other transgressions, but stealing from your own wife? Aida explains her plan—Ammy plays it cool, Aida gets an outside auditor in to get the proofs. But Maira needs to think carefully—Rubes could end up in jail for this. Maira doesn’t feel that it’s a very hard decision—por supuesto he should go jail!

Ammy meets with Rubes to verify Cancun plan and reassure him. He thanks Rubes profusely for the Cancun cash and takes off.

Aurora shows her mom around the guestroom. Vanessa promises not to leave.

More Paris sightseeing. Definitely getting their money’s worth on the location costs. Back at the hotel, Teresa and Arturo are a bit tipsy and flirty. She is considering letting him sleep in the same bed with her, but no funny business. (as an aside-- I am loving our little shark’s cat eyes in these Paris scenes.)

The next few scenes cut back and forth between Johnny and Pati and Teresa and Arturo, illustrating the total embargo on funny business between married couples on this TN.

Back in the DF, Hector and Hernan chat over coffee about Vanessa. Hector explains his doubts of her, and his understandable anger. Unfortunately, he also says she looked enchanting, which is a bad sign. Hernan advises Hector to tell Juana ASAP about the Vanessa situation, but Hector has a plan to tell her in Cuernavaca. What’s more, he’s not going to stay in the house when he gets back from CV.

Aida shows up at Mariano’s hospital. She’s clearly upset, but he has to coax the problem out of her. He promises not to tell anyone, and she fesses up about the fraud.

And this is it folks. Juana has arrived early at Hector’s to surprise him with some cookies. Vanessa waltzes in and introduces herself as the wife of Dr. Bigotone. Juana is so impactada that drops the plate of cookies. Oh my.
