A super duper secret wedding: Lo Que La Vida Me Robo Episode 101 Wed. April 2.2014
Amalia and Angelic surprise Esmeralda with a wedding and an awful wedding gown, if someone tried to put me in that I'd be all like "naw homie, that's not happening" but that's just me, Esmeralda on the other hand LOVED the gown and was thrilled to have a last minute wedding, also something I would not be cool with, but mostly because I want an army of midgets at my wedding and that takes a lot of planning.

Qué Pobres, Weds 4/2/14 (#62): Vilma Plays Dress-Up in Mommy's Closet
Saul visits MA at the market for rehash. He dIdn't find any more proof in the stuff Mini provided, but he has some people looking at Ahole's bank transfers to Adolfo.
MA says no, the papers for the house haven't shown up yet, and it's just as well because he'd be tempted to do a stupid thing and maybe that would be more trouble than he can handle right now. Saul teases MA for being in love. Nepo overhears and asks, who are you in love with? MA says he's in love with his job. He introduces Saul, who picks lint off of MA's shirt like a fussy spouse. "We're not that close," MA tells Nepo.
Mati asks how Emil did at his polo match (??) but it's not till next week. (I hope she's referring to the show-and-tell at school). He asks her about the wordy papers she swapped out with his drawings mixed together with Leo's. She reminds him not to tell anyone else about them, because those papers have magic powers. They can be good or bad depending on whose hands they fall into. They can even be dangerous. Certain things can change people and bring out their ugly side and turn love into hate. "Don't worry about them," she reassures Emil. "I put them somewhere no one will find them. They're like a treasure map!"

De Que Te Quiero, Te Quiero #18- Wed 4/2
Natalia, rather than just calling building security, decides to go check on Drunken Diego. At least she took Abdul with her…but only out to the street to get a taxi. Building security lets her in when she identifies herself…verbally!...as Diego's secretary. You call that "security"?! The same "security" guard lets himself get called away by a guy who says there's some dudes making graffitti on the side of the building so that Diana and Karina can sneak in and plant the coke. Which I kinda hope turns out to be baby powder or artificial sweetener.
Apparently, Eleazar likes to grocery shop when he's drunk. And take said groceries to Garcia Central Station. He's like the Santa Claus of cereal. Luz ends up coming over and gives him a hard time about being drunk in front of the kids. He keeps talking about the grocery run as a "mission" his mom sent him on. She makes him apologize for being drunk, but he accidentally lets out that Carmen's in solitary.

Que pobres tan ricos #61... If I had a penny for every time a leading lady or leading guy act stupidly after being on receiving end of stupid people's demeaning statements...
Does that mean that you are breaking up with me, lupita?? (DUH!!!) Nepo claims the earlier proposal did not count because he did not have a ring at the time. She says it doesn’t matter. HE is depressed. She feels bad, says she and her whole family appreciate Nepo and his family. Nepo insists ‘if you care about me as I care about you, and you don’t really want to marry me, I understand… but… one condition…(gesturing tiny with his fingers) Nepo offers to run with the expenses of the trip. He will treat everyone to the trip and when they return, friends like always. (so he got his way, he is coming along for the trip, she leaves and he starts gesturing ‘Yes!!’ like he has a plan for the trip…)
Mati fixing MA up to go to work after he overslept. He asks Frida what time she got home. She nags that she is grown up already. MA seems to be irritated, but he claims he is just worried about her. Leo jumps up, whinning they won’t let him sleep. AS whines that this is just like the camote salesguy and tamale vendors waking her up with their scandal. Mati and MA and Frida all shout in chorus just like the street vendors just to annoy Leo and AS… (that was funny…)
Later Frida and Tizoc run into each other in the bathroom, he reminds her what happened last night, ‘amor eterno’ and all that… she seems to be depressed, more like wanting to forget.
Later on Tizoc runs into her again and asks her for another kiss… she is annoyed by the request, she claims it was fun last night, but she is not ready for compromise. HE is though. She says what happened last night should not have happened, and I am not a ho… He says he knows that, she is no ho, she is the ONLY one. Frida keeps backtracking… she only wants friendship. He says he gets it, she still considers him beneath her… She tries to say no that’s not it.
Later on, at work, Nepo and MA are talking about MA’s ideas for Nepo’s business… he only asked MA for a ‘proposal’. MA seems to have a complete business and marketing plan and this all goes over Nepo’s head. He just wants to get the business to go well. So now it is MA that is calling quits on the plan. (seems Nepo insisted in MA helping him with the Lupe issue, MA walks away protesting).
Perla talks to Tizoc, she wants to ‘defend him from Frida’… she leaves saying ‘leave it to me, I’ll fix it.’ He stays there worried…
MA continues counting the money and saying he will make a payment on what they owe the Menchacas… (wait, this is a repeat of the scene we saw last night)… Perla attacks Frida, grabs Frida by neck. Out come from different doors Tizoc and MA first, then the rest of the family. AS uses the opportunity of the chaos to steal some of the money from MA’s stack. Perla tells everyone Frida got involved with Tizoc… everyone has frozen faces… (this scene was totally repeated from the ending of last night).
At hospital seems A-hole is demanding he be released, the doctor says that is not a good idea, your friends Pepe and Tono could be impacted. Get used to the idea that you won’t be able to have intimacy with your wife for a good while. Vilma starts talking silly about transplant of those organs is no easy task. A-hole insists in leaving, Doctor hands him his release papers to sign.
AS questions Frida if she got involved with the ‘cumbanchero’… She nags at Frida that they all lost their dignity… MA notices the money in AS’ cleavage and takes it saying ‘seems the whole family lost some dignity! Right?’

Por Siempre Mi Amor # 83 US 3/31/14 Too Many Predators, Not Enough Prey.
Leftovers:
Tita comforts Mari after the wedding incident that Mari herself caused. I don't get this. Mari attacked Ileana, Ileana was publicly humiliated, Dan was kicked out of the party and everyone sympathizes with Mari. Seems to me Mari's the one who acted like an idiot. Yes I know Mari's heart is broken, but that doesn't mean she should act like a 5-year old and everyone should feel sorry for her.

Qué Pobres, Lunes 3/31/14 (#60): His Windsong Stays on Her Mind
- Tato insinuates to Frida that, hypothetically, a really classy chick, maybe someone Frida would know, like maybe even the type of chick that Frida's brother MA was engaged to, could like him just the way he is and he wouldn't have to go marching in parades or handing blankets around to poor people just to impress her. Later it occurs to her that Tato must have been the person who revealed their location to Minerva.

Diego appeals to Padre Juancho, but between The Great Misunderstanding and Diego being married, it's a no-go. Plus, now PJ is pissed that Natalia knew he was married.
The Sexter spent all the extra money, but Diana forgives him and slips him some tongue where Natalia and Angela, leaving a coffeehouse, can see them.

Weekend Discussion: Are Novelas Getting More Violent?
We've referenced this before, but with the recent incidents in Lo Que La Vida Me Robo, Mentir Para Vivir, and even the attempted rape in De Que Te Quiero Te Quiero we can't help but wonder whether novelas in general are going down a slippery slope that can't be tilted back.
In a previous discussion on this issue we seem to have come to the consensus that the rise of the narco stories came from the networks' desire to get more male viewers. I don't know whether that's been working for them, but edgier has been the order of the day in all television and we need to ask ourselves whether there should be a limit. In the US there is an irrational fear of sexual content in ad-supported television which until relatively recently hasn't affected the Spanish-language networks very much. We're complaining here -- and justifiably -- when we become aware of hot love scenes being censored because they are censoring mostly scenes that show couples who actually love each other and actors who have the right chemistry to do scenes like that. Why are television networks so afraid of the conservative moral watchdogs who -- if they were truly what they say they are -- aren't even watching these programs and theoretically shouldn't care about them? These people don't control all the money in this country although they are trying hard. We should not allow them to get a foothold into our private lives.
Why instead are they not censoring violence? Violence is the real obscenity in modern society and the constant exposure to it takes away much of its shock value. The occasional violent scene with bruises, bloodshed, etc., can be powerful; too many such and people will begin to shrug it off. Is this some unconscious Darwinian element nobody has identified?
Villains are also becoming more perverse as we continue down this path. Porque el Amor Manda gave us a female villain who emotionally abused her own child (as in 5 years old in the opening of the story), Amor Bravio had a male villain who raped his own niece, even planning it so that it happened just as she became mayor de edad, and a sexual blackmailer forcing the heroine into her Tosca moment (as an opera fan I sometimes wish she would have taken the same action). LQLVMR and PSMA are currently giving us villains of such extreme sociopathy they're making our flesh crawl. Not an episode goes by on this blog that someone doesn't comment on that.
At the moment in a series like LQLVMR violence is the price tag we're paying for the otherwise good writing and the chemistry of the two leads. I'm not ready to walk away from such a situation, but if Televisa reads this blog, this is to let them know that there is only so much violence we should be able to tolerate in the name of ratings.
Sound off, amigos.

Adolfo is put in a teensy bit of a difficult position here... |
A FEW HIGHLIGHTS, EXPANDED:
It turns out Ezequiel was bluffing with the whole Kill-Bitch-Maria-or-Else threat on Adolfo. The bullets in the gun were blanks. Maria is not amused. I think she'd be less amused if she actually died. But I digress. Ezequiel has this idea to take down Medina, so he needs Maria alive to witness against Medina when the time comes. Ez says that it's just a matter of time before that happens, as JL is already suspecting something. Ezequiel explains that he doesn't want to wait around for Medina to knock him off, he's going to get to Medina first! Adolfo is very contrite for pulling the trigger (which we know now had blanks) but Bitch Maria is not feeling forgiving. Ezequiel arranges for Bitch Maria to hide out with Esmeralda, who isn't too keen on hanging out with Maria. She assigns Maria maid duty for room and board. Maria feels this is "beneath" her. Esmeralda says well, leave then, and see how that works for you.

"Don't do it!" she begs him. Well, all things considered, maybe ...? She is such a pain in the neck, after all... |
