Pasion y Poder #103 20160311 The Iowans Have Taken Over Mexico

Eladio stresses to Caridad that Marintia had better stick to the agreement and keep her mouth shut.  If not, both of them will suffer the consequences.

Once again, Julia is moaning to Gaby about how she can't trust Eladio and will never forgive him.  Gaby tells Julia to follow her heart and be happy.  Lessoned learned ladies:  if you don't have sex with your husband for over 20 years, he will eventually have sex with someone else.  Correction:  he will have sex with a lot of someone elses.

Franco tells Eladio about some protest that he is orchestrating at the Montenegro Riviera Maya construction site.  Eladio isn't impressed until Franco explains that he has arranged for the press to be there.  Eladio changes the subject to Marintia.  Franco needs to tell her to keep her mouth shut.  Franco says that he's got her under control.  Eladio strongly disagrees.  He tells Franco that Julia had better not get mad at him because of this.  She doesn't like secrets.  Speaking of Julia, she calls and asks Eladio to come home immediately.

El Hotel de los Secretos #33, 3/11/16 Friday: Couplings, Uncouplings And Coma

At a glance

-- Isabel and Julio break up and become estranged.
-- Sofía's growing dependence on opiates is becoming problematic and is being fed (intentionally or unintentionally) by Mother Terror Teresa. Sofía's husband rots in jail to protect her lying manic-depressive behind.
-- Andrés is saved from marrying Belén (and from getting killed by the Werewolf Gold Knife Slasher) thanks to a freak accident involving a horse and a strategically positioned wagon wheel. He is now in a coma, blissfully unaware for an entire summer.
-- Time jump!
-- Diego helps Isabel set up a rural hospital and, on the day of its inauguration, he pops the question.

A closer look

Buckle up for this is a bumpy one. Here we go.

Following Alfredo’s arrest, Sofía is having a nervous breakdown. She sits in her bed, crying and shaking uncontrollably. Her barely coherent mumbles of “I can’t! I can’t!” are punctuated by low-pitched wails. Dr. Lázaro Vicario tries to calm her down, to no avail. He asks Isabel to prepare him a dose of morphine but she protests that he can’t inject morphine to a pregnant woman. The Doc snaps at her: “This is an order! I am not asking advice from a student! And tell me once and for all whether you want to carry on learning by following the orders of your superiors!”. Isabel obliges. The Doc asks Matilde to pitch in and help. While all three look after Sofía, Teresa steals a bottle of laudanum from Lázaro’s medical bag and tucks it into the waistband of her skirt. Teresa maintained the most phlegmatic composure throughout this scene but her face betrayed the angst and impotence a mother feels when she can’t alleviate her child’s distress.

Sueno de Amor, #4, Friday, 03/12/16 There is no alegria in the Alegria family

Hello, my patio peeps! I'll try to cover as much as possible from the episode, but fair warning: I blended some scenes together to give this a better flow. Sorry for the bad editing, I'm writing the first part on the run.

Part one (part two later in the afternoon)

We start with Ricardo and his operation to catch La Sombra. The guy that gets killed in the fight turns out not to be the feared Sombra, though. Ricardo is muy molesto.
Back at the operations center - imagine a Star Trek meets FBI quarters meets Total Recall - Ric gets proof that La Sombra, Maximilano Izzaguire, had been in the house at some time, they found his prints there. They also got a child's drawing and an ultrasound (?!). These are some serious clues that they need to look into.
Police work gets interrupted by a call from home - it's Ric's wife, Tracy, telling him he needs to get back ASAP. Ric is not happy about it, but he lets his assistant know that he has to catch the next flight back to LA.

El Hotel de los Secretos #32, 3/10/16 Thursday: Sofia has a bad day

Hello patio peeps, my apologies for not being able to recap last week, I had the worst cold I've ever had, I thought my ear drums would burst. Below you'll find a short recap of last night's episode!

Jacinto y Violeta:

So Jacinto is talking to Violeta when they are rudely interrupted by Violeta's mom, who tries dragging her away, Violeta's pimp comes on the scene and sends the women away. Mr. Pimp asks what Jacinto wants with Vio and Jacinto replies that he has good intentions towards her, then he gets a word of advice from Mr. Pimp: "whores live like whores and die whores"- he cautions Jacinto against coming back to the brothel without paying, if he visits he is to pay, if he drinks he is to pay, so I guess Jacinto will need a part time job to be able to pay for the visits to his lady love.

Isa y Julio

So these two should not be together because Julio compares her family to a rabid pack of wild dogs and Isa is doing her best to protect her puppies, family. She tells him Sofia is innocent and that she's a sick woman, in the end Julio says that he will do whatever it takes it bring his sisters murderer to justice. They each have to do what they have to do. Julio goes to Ayala and tells him he will bring him something of Sofia's that can be used to get her finger prints. Ayala tells him that doing so could be costly to Julio- he could lose Isa, but Julio pays him no mind- he will get justicia for his sister. And so Julio breaks into Sofia's room and steals a book that Ayala later gets prints from, it seems like lady Sofia is the number one suspect because her finger prints match those at the scene of the crime-dun,dun,dun!

Pasión y poder, Episode 102, Thursday, March 10, 2016: Regression to the Mean(ie)

These two wounded people, Eladio and Julia, have reached a stalemate.

Each suspects the other of betrayal.  And each is right.  (Wasn't spending the night with Arturo an emotional betrayal?  Isn't hiding The Marintia Problem from Gaby and Julia playing dirty pool?)

And more narrowly speaking, each is wrong, of course.  There has been no extramarital boinking.  Not lately.  (Or not yet.)

Eladio will tell Julia why he was visiting Caridad if she will tell him whether she spent the night with Arturo. Even if she had been with Arturo, she says, he hardly has the right to reproach her, he with his many lovers.  And she storms out in a cloud of self-righteous angst.

Eladio's expression changes rapidly from devastation to rage.  "She was with him!"

He calls Franco into his office and orders him to find out all the dirt on Arturo: the Riviera Maya project, the hydroelectric plans, the restaurants, the hotels – everything that bastard is doing.  Eladio is going to ruin him!

Sueño de amor #2 3/9/16

After tonight, I am just going to have to get used to expecting the unexpected since all in one episode we went: from a musical number in the street to high blood sugar to Botox to an interrupted sexual assault to a trip down memory lane in silhouette and to lots more. I have to admit I enjoy the variety . . . and liked this episode much more than the first.

We will pick up just after Pato is creeped out finding out that Luca is her brother as her father Ernesto just has this weird grin on his face. Luca tries to say something but Ernesto cuts him off. He is so glad to meet his beautiful daughter. Pato has been waiting for this moment for years and does not know what to say to him so Ernesto invites Pato and Luca both out to dinner. Luca begs off saying they must have a lot to talk about. Pato just gives a sad uncomfortable look as she leaves with the still grinning Ernesto.

School time: Esperanza is playing a recording of her principal Silvana Fierro threatening her if she does not change Paulo Rey's grade. She wants her principal to be aware thay she he has the recording on the phone and is ready to play it for the school board if necessary. Silvana tells her she can keep her job but not for long. She may have won the battle but not the war. Esperanza Didn't know they were at war but she is not afraid. She needs her job to earn a living but she also needs her job to protect her students from a principal like her. Silvana informs her that she will make her life miserable and will not rest until she has destroyed Esperanza!!!!!!!!

El Hotel de los Secretos #31, 3/9/16 Wednesday: All for the Proof of the Truth

·       Julio has snuck into his beloved’s bedroom but honestly we don’t know why—to talk about why he felt the need to abandon their eloping.  He hasn’t abandoned her, he says.  He’s close by and so is justice for his sister with him there as well.  Isabel says talk to the hand.  She, Viewerville senses, is having second thoughts about her Dear Diego letter. El Do or Die Gold-digger de Diego left that letter as if it were unread—what a heartbreak it must have been!  (If only he had a heart there instead of that rotted piece of cherry-pit.)   He takes care of her and she was careless and care free when it came to him.  (Someone may have a better grasp of the nuance here.) —and I do not??”  No, in a few words.   He only wants justice for his sister.  Hah!  He doesn’t know the meaning of the word! sayz she.   To Isa the meaning of the word justice has been expanded just a bit.   [Think ‘Social’.] Justice is not being so selfish as to think that his wounds are the deepest , nor his battles the most important to fight.  He tries to ask her forgiveness.  His mercurial maid won’t accept it.  “—Leave!  You leave, or…, or I will!!” Well, she’s right.  Julio is the most obdurate man she’s ever met.  He stays.  She exits stage right.
·
·        Jacinto, meanwhile, is trying to eat a bit of breakfast while Lupe chats and asks if he’s done anything with the news about his mama’s whereabouts in Little Rock—as in Arkansas, not Arizona.  Jacinto remains silent and moody.  He suddenly ups to upchuck outside.  (Personally that baby act he pulled with Violeta made me wanna upchuck.   What a WTF momento.)

Sueño de Amor (SdA) #1. Tuesday March 8, 2016. A Wobbly Premiere Marked By The Conspicuous Absence Of Our Chilean Bombón (Cristiáaaaan!) And The Auspicious Absence Of The Osorio Kid

At a glance

-- We meet Esperanza Guerrero, a single mother to Patricia "Pato" Guerrero Diez and Pedro Carmona Guerrero. She combines two teaching jobs: one at the fancy Instituto Palacios and one at a public school.
-- Esperanza plans on building a school for street kids and dreams of encountering Ricardo again, her long-lost love (and sorely missed Cristián de la Fuente).
-- Silvana Fierro, School Principal of Instituto Palacios, pressures Esperanza to give a pass to a student because he is the son of the School Board President. Esperanza refuses. Silvana threatens to fire her.
-- Ernesto de la Colina, a wealthy real estate magnate, is revealed to be Pato’s biological father. He pretended to be single, seduced Esperanza and abandoned her when she fell pregnant. He now wants to meet their daughter and win over Esperanza.

-- Luca de la Colina is Ernesto’s eldest son. Pato sees him save a worker’s life at a building site and she is smitten. Luca and Pato have an overly cute “meet-cute”, but later, Pato goes to visit her biological father and discovers that she and Luca are half-siblings!

It appears that the graphics budget has been stripped to a minimum: the title logo is brought to you by the Crayola people and the mad Photoshop skillz of someone’s 9-year old niece. On the other hand, the opening credits feature a lovely song by Maná and Shakira. I guess that’s where all the budget went. I can get onboard with that.

Chapter 101: Reflections in a Dark Adapted Eye

Pierre Choderlos de Laclos would probably love to trade places with me right now. The absence of powdered wigs, folding fans, and canopied beds would make no difference to him. There are still as many lies, deceptions, and false promises to have gotten the book banned in France in his time. As for now, nothing really gets banned in Boston anymore and I think people like to be shocked. This particular set doesn't shock me anymore; after the Bradleys and the Grenvilles nothing does. – D.D.

Antes muerta que Lichita #115 3/7/16 "El gran final" Part 2

Everybody thought this would be a two-hour episode and I was doing the last hour -- so I'm glad I got home and turned on my dvr halfway through the show. This was without a doubt the worst "grand finale" of any novela I've ever watched. It was so disrespectful to the viewers and also to the crew and actors of the show to chop it up into such a mess. Shame, Univision!

My tape starts after the credits. Two lawyers come to take Mateo away from the Guttierez home - Alicia's custody had been temporary and now it has elapsed. They've come to take him back to an orphanage (? a "governor's house). Sadness and tears. Yet again Mateo is told, "I'll come for you and we'll never be separated." If that kid doesn't spend years in therapy my name is not Sigmund Freud.

Un Camino Hacia el Destino-Week 3 (Mar 7, 2016)

Anita is in the editorial chair, putting up the Discussion Page for this week (and maybe next week).

This is an invitation for those who have not yet checked out Un Camino Hacia el Destino. Put on your walking shoes and come along. You may actually enjoy it. It has nuns in white habits, a few schoolgirls, no annoying kids. It has a gardener who gets sweaty in undershirts, frizzy haired villanas, an old grandpa, a bitter disillusioned wife, sensible nannies, shyster lawyers and an earnest young guapo doctorcito.

It is not a teen novela (it's at 7:00 p.m.), although it may come close. It has a bouncy upbeat teenager on the verge of womanhood and her first serious romance.

It has a great cast and we're hoping the directors keep the producer in check. Earlier episodes are on Univision (at least I see 2,3,4 and 7,8,9--not sure what happened to 5 & 6), Hulu (I'm guessing) and OnDemand. Recaps for the first two weeks are on the first discussion page. New ones coming, as time permits. Please contribute to the discussions, though.

Note to Carlos: Every time I type Dr. Carlos (Horacio Pancheri), I think of you.
Note to Susanlynn: Your Sweet Baboo gives the sweetest kisses.

El Hotel de los Secretos #30, 3/7/16 Monday: Hissy Fits

Diego reads Isabel's "Dear John" letter and has a hissy fit. He seems genuinely heartbroken, like a little boy who's been forever barred from playing with Hot Wheels.

Ayala presents Teresa with his evidence: the Mallet of Reckoning. She doesn't even recognize it, much less accept it as a murder weapon. She's unimpressed by Ayala's assertion that it's the only object that could have inflicted the wound found on Cristina's skull. Ayala says it could only have been wielded by someone who comes and goes from the hotel at his or her whim. Gravel from the courtyard was also found in the ironing room. (Teresa's face momentarily turns grave when Ayala's back is turned.) He asks, no, begs her to allow him - without forcing him to obligate her - to question the employees. "Very well, as long as it's only the employees," she replies. What a heart of gold. He asks her to send them one by one and reminds her that the interrogations are private.

Elisa asks Victoria to send a telegram to Don Javier first thing tomorrow, advising him of her impending arrival with her son. She hopes to be welcomed with open arms. Victoria asks if she'd also like to send a telegram regarding that favor Teresa was hoping for. "I won't lift a finger for my dear in-law," Elisa snickers. "I'll let the Alarcons smoulder in their own flames. Now prepare my bath!"

Jacinto tells Lupe that he doesn't want to fight. There are things he just doesn't want to tell his father. "Little Rock," Lupe says to Jacinto in English. It's a place in Arizona, Lupe says. (Er, does he mean Arkansas?) That's where Lupe tracked Jacinto's mother to. He invites Jacinto to write to her if he likes.

Benjamin interrupts: The police are questioning people, and they're starting with the chauffeur.

Antes muerta que Lichita #115 3/7/16 "El gran final" Part 1

Well, we finally made it to the end and it turned out to be only one hour after all. Anyway, Jane and I are still teaming up to put this one to bed so I will tuck it in and leave it to her to turn off the lights. (So to speak)
Here we go . . .

We pick up the story with Augusto confronting Alicia about the papers she has that belong to him and telling her he has never ever ever in his life forgiven a betrayal. He tells her not to make him look like a fool and asks her if the papers were the only reason she came. He wants to know why she would pay him back like this. Then he is right back in her face when she asks him if he thinks it was nothing what he did to Roberto: making him end up in jail again on his account. Augusto cannot believe that she could be in love with that imbecile. He cannot believe that he Augusto de Toledo Y Mondragón has fallen into her trap. He is at first incredulous but then he applauds her for having done it. She isn't just some social climber; she's a master of her craft. Alicia admits to us that there was some truth in his words. Alicia tells him she is sorry if she really broke his heart. He grabs her and again is in her face. Augusto tells her that he never thought it was possible for anyone to hurt him the way that she has. Anyway, it is too late to help out "her" Roberto. She wants to know what he did to Roberto. He screams that "her" Roberto is dead and throws her back on the bed. Alicia is shocked.

El Hotel de los Secretos #29, 3/4/16 Friday: Proof of Murder

What a way to start an episode! We are, I mean they are, exhausted from having some ‘I’m so sad, here, let’s have sex to make you feel better” sex. They declare that they now belong to each other. Who doesn’t do that the first time you do it with a person, right?

While they pledge themselves to each other and probably doing it again, we see Sofia looking at her now flat belly, Filipe kissing a comatose Mercedes, and a fully clothed Eugenia lowering herself into a tub.

Julio wants Isabel to run off with him. But Isabel wants to stay and change bad mojo in the hotel. But Julio throws cold reality on her face. He’s a waiter and she’s the owner’s daughter. That will never work if they stay there. He finally convinces her and tells her that he’s going to buy 2 train tickets and will meet her there at 6:30pm.

Luciana thanks them for caring for her, she feels like they are her family. Vale says … well… we are.

Alicia tells her family that Mateo is Roberto’s son… Elsa, Magos and Ximena are all surprised to hear the Roberto-Mateo relationship… Alicia begs her mom to keep him there, he will be much safer than with Augie.
