Weekend Discussion: Alpha Males

Much has been said among social anthropologists about the Ideal Female Face, shown here with Jessica Alba as the example:

However, after long observation, I have determined that there is an ideal male facial type that is very prominent among the alpha male types we encounter in entertainment.  It consists of some combination of the following traits:

Mentir Para Vivir #91 Thu 2/13/14 Consultar para Confirmar

Homero discusses his intentions toward Jackie with Ric and Paloma.  Paloma seems surprised, since Jackie is such a nice girl.  Francisco's henchdude comes to pick up Lina's bicycle, but Ric refuses and Paloma backs him up.  Paloma demands to know if Homero can't have him picked up already!  But Homero's only mostly sure.  What he is sure about is that we're nearly done with this schlock.  And that Jackie doesn't know who he is, or that he was after her dad.  "Or she's a good liar," Ric points out.

Mariano gives Jackie the tour of Hermosillo.  She gets to see the Deer Dance in a plaza and then they go off to look at some pottery.

Mama Barragan shows up at Casa Bonito, where she's welcomed by Lucina.  Lucina apologizes for not being able to give Mama B a room, cause they're all full up.  After some confusion about Jackie's name, they establish that yes, she is staying there.  Mama B looks anxious.

Mariano shows Jackie some Yaqui and Seri crafts in a little store.  He talks about how long it takes to weave a basket that's nearly his size.  Jackie asks about the Pitic festival.  Mariano says that was the original name of the city and he'd really like her to stay and see it.  He invites her to lookout point…makeout point?

Que Pobres Tan Ricos #29- 2/13/14: Let The Bouts Begin!

Hola Amguis! Another rapid fire speech capitulo! My Spanish may be "off" but please fill in what I missed. This is done mainly from memory and will not be in order so as to flow better. Happy Valentine's Day Y'all!

It is Day 25 of the Infamous Smelly Suit!

MA and Lupe, she found the papers and is about to look at them, when MA catches her. He isn't pleased and tells her it's not nice to nose through others' stuff. She is petulant at being caught and tells him she could have thrown it in the trash. MA insists this paperwork is to prove his innocence and que horror! this should be lost. Better guard it better she says. They both are in a huff as he goes.

This part had alot of slang so bear with me. Frida is telling JT she is trying to borrow some equipment, of the sound variety, to replace what she "accidently" ruined. JT thinks it's a trick, but she assures him it is professional equipment, but it probably won't be there until just before the bout, the people she knows are professional musicians and use the equipment too. (Thanks Marta) JT wants to know why she is so willing to help him out, cause she's responsible she says. JT thinks she's jealous of Vanessa his novia? She could care less about Vanessa, yeah, right, sure, sure, her face speaks otherwise. JT accepts the help.

Lo Que La Vida Me Robo capitulo 68, 13 February, 2014 - Mother and Child Reunion

Mother and Child Reunion

A Screaming Baby

In the Mendoza mansion a baby screams. The rooms in the ancient house are large, graciously proportioned and beautifully furnished. The baby, Lauro Mendoza, is not alone, but he might as well be. His grandmother, an extravagantly dressed forty-something aged woman, rushes about the house frantically, making swooshing noises where her Spanx meets silk dress and tapping sounds as she navigates the antique clay floor tiles in her sky high heels.

Lauro’s grandmother, who is called Graciela, is mumbling under her breath in Spanish, incongruously carrying a full baby bottle in her hand. She seems to be made anxious by little Lauro’s incessant wailing, but she does nothing to comfort him. She does not offer him the bottle, or comfort or simple human companionship. She offers him nothing.

There is a knock at the front door. Graciela hands the maid the baby bottle and yells that she will answer the door. Two younger women, they are called Nadia and Josefina, wait outside.  Graciela rudely responds to her would-be guests, bitterly complaining that the baby’s crying is driving her mad and that she is desperate for news. Belatedly, she invites the women into the house.

They tell her that Jose Luis Alvarez in in the hospital but that he yet lives. After she hears this information Graciela he makes a hasty grab for her handbag and nearly runs out the front door.
Lauro is still crying. Josefina wonders if they should have told Doña Graciela that Alejandro Almonte is in jail. Nadia says no, if Montserrat has told her mother nothing, then she has her reasons. Nadia and Josefina hurry toward little Lauro’s room to offer the child comfort and care.

Qué Pobres, Wednesday 2/12/14 (#28): The Poo of Reckoning

Alt titles:
- DaVinci's Magic Poop
- Incident of the Blurred Turd

(I feel a little guilty about going for the crappy jokes, but I just can't stop. I could try to dance around the subject, but I'd end up getting it all over my shoes.)

Adolfo tells the board of directors, or whatever they are, that he had nooooo idea that MA was defrauding the company, but that explains why MA didn't listen to any of Adolfo's suggestions and wanted to do it alllllll by himself. Adolfo will cooperate with the law in every way possible.

After Adolfo leaves, Ahole tells the board that he's been doing his own investigation, and he's sure that Adolfo was in on the fraud with MA. He doesn't have enough evidence yet, though, so he wants to keep Adolfo around for now. "Like my grandfather used to say, keep your enemies close!"

Later, Vilma worries that Adolfo might find out what Ahole is saying behind his back. Ahole is sure he's a step ahead of Adolfo. "He'll never even know it was me," he brags. Vilma tries to make a move on him. Oblivious Ahole thinks she's making a weird face at him.

Por Siempre Mi Amor #50 (U.S.), 2/12/14: FeVier Gets Busted, But the Raisin Gets Whacked

Mexico Episodes #61 & 62

Alternate Title: Fabricio Should Have Stayed in Monterrey, Away From These Crazy People

If I have time during the snow day tomorrow, I’ll look at the Mexican episodes and add things that Uni cut out. But our condensed Uni episode was filled to the brim with revelations and surprises!

Isabel is on the phone with FeVier making arrangements to meet up tomorrow. Gabi just wants Isa to get to the point, and kick the guy out of her condo. When she hangs up, Isa tries to downplay all the coincidences, which Gabi points out—he saved her life, then he turns up working for their internet security company, and now he’s renting her penthouse! He’s probably one of those obsessed stalkers. Gabi wants to tag along to the meeting. Isa downplays again. Gabi has been watching too much Law and Order-SVU.  Isa doesn’t think they should judge him just because he reminds them of Fernando, but she does want to figure out a tactful way of kicking him out of her condo.

Arturo reads the letters Katia left him. In them, Osvaldo tells Katia that she is the love of his life. Had they met years earlier (before he met his wife), then their story would have had a different end. Art can’t continue to read the letters, nor can he believe it. He calls Dr. Elias Caranza and asks him to come to the house right away. He shakes and holds his head in disbelief.

That night, Sonia arrives home, still marveling that Fabricio is Osvaldo’s son and Art’s (half) brother. Feo arrives and brags about how much success he’s having seducing her niece. And now that he knows Aranza is inexperienced, he is eager to plow that virgin soil and be her first. He is certain that she is VERY in love with him. Sonia isn’t surprised considering he’s been pulling out all the stops to romance Ara, just like he did with her (hmmm…a bit more back story on these two). Ah, but you see, that’s not enough for Feo. He wants to rob Ara of her will (voluntad)! He wants her to only see through his eyes. Since Ara is balking on presenting him to her parents, he’s going to keep trying to make inroads with becoming Isa’s friend. Who can resist Javier’s charms? He’s not like Fernando. He’s educated, well-mannered, classy, and she owes him her life. He loves the idea that Ara will be his (sexually) in the same place that Isa was his mujer. S: “You’re such a pervert, Diablo.”  He can’t wait for the day Art and Isa meet their daughter’s novio, and even more for the day when they learn who he is. Sonia points out that that will be the day he goes to jail. Feo is not worried. He has a plan. All this nefarious talk makes them horny and they start making out. All the while being recorded by the hidden camera Feo installed.

Lo Que La Vida Me Robó, #67, 2/12/14: Duel on the PLAYA

It's on!

“A man may shoot the man who invades his character, as he may shoot him who attempts to break into his house.” -Samuel Johnson

An action-packed episode, amigas and amigos, with some significant movement forward ¡por fin! in our drama!  I'll skip the first refrito and get to the main action.

Alejandro's Beach House, Agua Azul:  Victor and Alejandro discuss the meeting that Montse (actually, Gracie sending a text pretending to be Montse) proposed between Alejandro and herself.  Ever-reasonable Victor wonders if Ale is going and thinks he should--maybe Montse has something to say that will clear up Alejandro's doubts.  Ale responds that the only thing she wants is to protect José-Luis.  Victor suggests that maybe Montse wants to protect Ale himself.

Unfortunately, Ale is still on an interminable tour of duty in his own private WAR OF BITTERNESS AND IMPLACABLE RESENTMENT and (why am I even writing it since we all know what he's going to say?) talks again about how Montse and J-L tricked him, laughed at him, and how his life is hell.  It's a thorn in his manly breast.  He maintains J-L should have talked to him (Ale) man to man when he (J-L) first came to the hacienda, but Nooooo--J-L had to go and pass himself off as someone else.  Ale is upset because he confided in J-L and treated him as a friend.  And once again Alejandro declares that what makes him the most enraged is the fact that EVERYONE ELSE KNEW.

Victor urges Ale to calm down for what must be the gazillionth time since episode 52 when the truth first came out, but, even at episode 67, Ale is still not listening and says don't tell him to be calm when an he feels like an idiot for being duped and how he can't forget what happened.  He ends the scene by declaring that only thing he can do is make J-L pay with his life for destroying Ale's.  I think he's said this before, but given that I know what's going to happen as I write, he means it even more than ever.

Mentir Para Vivir, #89, HIGHLIGHTS A photo is worth a thousand words

Yesterday I recapped by mistake Tuesday's episode (that's why you got that butchered version of Monday, but I hope I made it up to you all with that crazy hot video).
Cynderella already posted her snarktastic recap, so I won't go through all the details again; I just want to share some of the highlights, since this is an episode I quite enjoyed.

There is a new kid on the block
Ric and Mariano are in a bar, talking about the same old, same old. Ric is married, Ines is married and sick of men as of late; Ric is afraid Ines will accept the ex (who is actually still the current as far as I know) to make Alina happy; Mariano tries to cheer him up, but it’s obvious he’s just as annoyed as Viewerville is. Berenice shows up and Ric asks her if she ever talks to Alina about her father. Well, here is a bit of information worthy of a 1.01 Psychology class: when asked to draw pictures of her family, Alina either paints herself with Tito, mom and dad, or Tito, mom and Abuela Paloma – never Abuela and dad in the same drawing. How about that for some psycho-analysis?

Jacqui just happens to be in the same place and she trips and falls in front of the bar where the guys are chatting. They jump to her rescue and offer to take her to a clinic that is not too far away.
From all the bars and all the streets in all of Hermosillo she just happens to injure her ankle in front of the very people she has to stay hidden from. Funny how that always happens in telenovelas.

Mentir Para Vivir #89 Tue 2/11/14 Revenge is a Dish Best Served Cold by a Little Girl Wearing Pony Tails

Diner:  Mariano and Ricky are having high tea as they briefly discuss the Breton marriage dissolution problem.  Ricky is upset that Oriana hasn’t been paying attention to him.  Job’s counselor, aka Mariano suggests that Oriana may not be into Ricky anymore.  Maybe after being with you, she’s turned lesbian.  He also suggests that Oriana may not want to wait ten months or longer for Ricky’s divorce to be final.  They are interrupted by Bereniece.  Ricky asks Bereniece if she has spoken with Rhodalina about visiting her father.  Yes, she did.  She’s shares that Rhodalina has been drawing pictures of a her father, mother, Tito and herself lately.  BUT, if she draws a picture with Paloma in it, the father is not included.  Ricky asks what that mean.  Bereniece doesn’t know, but she is going to discuss it with the shrink.  After the nurse leaves, Mariano is left alone to talk Ricky down from the roof.  They are interrupted by the sight of Joaquina and her clown car hair falling on the sidewalk outside of the restaurant.  They rush out to assist her up and escort her to Mariano’s free clinic so that he can examine her ankle.

Que pobres tan ricos #27 Tues Feb 11, 2014 . Lupe stops Nepo and MA from trying to get to her soft spot through Emiliano. Adolfo gets home(MA and Saul see him with A-hole), Saul confronts him and he calls A-hole in panic. Mini has good news for A-hole.

Not sure where Monday ended up, I was out for the count sick on a couch and missed most of it.

MA, Lupe and Chuy have some argument about the house and the remaining balance... again! but MA won't spill the beans about how much the house is worth according to the last document.
Chuy swears to MA they will pay him the 300,000 pesos and that's it!!
Lupe and Chuy leave the room and MA starts nagging with himself about him having had the finances education and they don't know sh.... (oops! they were still just around the door and they heard him, and now they exchange the hand gesture of the number 3  ... funny it was... and MA's face of a puppy caught in the pantry was priceless)...
At Nepo's stand/store, Nepo again is using Gwendy as a relationship counselor... he keeps pessimistic about Lupe not giving him much attention and spending much time with MA. Gwendy says dont give up.  MEanwhile the guy that works for Nepo is telling Nepo about some melons they had ordered that arrived. And Nepo is laughing because they turn the joke on Gwendy(relating the melons and her bust size)... seems Nepo is trying to hook these two together... Gwendy not amused by the commentary/joking around.

Back at Fonda, Chuy very excited about the posters he had made for the lucha libre event at the Fonda grand opening. In comes Tizoc with the flyers he had made about the band concert at the fonda Grand opening. Chuy begins pulling out the cards that he maintained the family with the wrestling and the wrestling 'holds' (llaves) feeding them all along. They can’t agree so they call Lupita to decide for them. She puts her foot down, since neither of you got me any certainty/assurance for your events, either you two get to an agreement or the fonda opening will have neither wrestling or music. Tizoc and Chuy keep putting pressure on Lupita, but she gets irritated and tells them ‘you two settle it!! don’t count on me!’ and leaves in a huff.

MA scares Saul again when he gets to his car. Anyway, after another anxiety attack from MA where he showed more from his AS genes than his grandpa genes talking down of the Menchaaaacas, he asks Saul if they can stop by Adolfo’s house again. This time they are lucky to catch Adolfo arriving home… and to top it off, A-hole also gets out of the car and they realize A-hole and Adolfo are far from ‘can’t stand each other’ status. (if they only occurred to pull out their phone camera… stupid duo). Instead of getting some evidence, they argue about what they have to do as next step…

Lo Que La Vida Me Robo, Capitulo 65. 02/10/14.

Joaquin spills the frijoles on JL's whereabouts.  His poor baby girl is dying and once she passes JL will inherit a grand fortune.  JL and Montse will then be able to enjoy all that money.  Ale puts 2 and 2 together and comes up with 586 and concludes that this is the reason Montse sent him the divorce papers.  Joaquin informs Ale that the law is no longer looking for JL.  Angelica's godmother is the sister of the Captain of the marina and she was able to get all the charges cleared.  JL was re-instated in the marina.

JL finds out from Angelica that Montse and Ale are no longer together.  Once Ale found out about him, he threw her out.  He no longer wants anything to do with her.  JL calls Ale an idiot.  He can't believe that Montse lied to him.  What do you mean she lied to you questions Angelica.  JL says Montse lied that Ale found out about him and said that he forgave her.  Angelica wonders when he spoke with Montse.  Months ago before we got married lies JL.  JL keeps going on and on about Ale's behavior.  He asks if Ale is going to recognize his own son.  Angelica says Montse doubts he will.  JL walks away and mutters to himself if he only knew this all before.  Angelica, one of the smart ones in the bunch, finishes JL's thoughts and says you would have married her and taken care of her and her son.  JL apologizes.  You have no idea how much it hurts me to know that Montse is suffering.  Why did she marry him?  You still love her a lot replies Angelica.  Perhaps it's best not to answer that.  I don't want you to lie.  Anyways I have always known you love her.  I'm just grateful that you married me in spite of the love you have for her.  JL says what he feels for her is different, but just as intense.

Por Siempre Mi Amor #48 (U.S.) 2/10/14 The Past is Coming Back

Hello Everyone! Time for some Tuesday funnies:

This episode is a combination of episodes 57 and 58. I was able to see #57 online but couldn't get #58 to play for some reason. The scenes that were cut out from our U.S. version are again in italics. If anyone from Univision is reading this: STOP editing this telenovela! You're confusing the hell out of the audience.

Some scenes have been combined for my sanity.

Mentir Para Vivir #88 Mon 2/10/14 Marilooney gives it her all and ... fails

It has come to my attention that I recapped the wrong episode last night. Because I didn't watch Friday's show and have no clue about what is happening in this tn anymore, I didn't even realize I had skipped one episode. The Friday episode is numbered 88, so that's why I made the confusion.

Here is a brief recap of what has happeend (many thanks to Vivi, who added her piece of work, too)

  • Ric and Oriana break up again, because she is not willing to wait on his divorce - regardless of that, she will still be married
  • Joaquin's daughter, Jacqui, finds out about her father's affairs from her mom, Rosa; she is shocked and upset, she wants to go to Mexico to set things straight, see what really happened; her mother warns her to be careful with Uncle Sam
  • Rosa agrees to free JL from his position, especially since he still has the CD; Sam doesn't agree with this, he wants to kill 'hem all
  • Maddy offends Cesar one more time, when he refuses to work for the real estate company; later with Ric and Piero, Cesar expresses his worry about his parents being involved in said business
  • Homero is wondering what will Joaquin's widow and his eldest daughter will do now that he's dead; will they continue the family business? also, he's thinking about asking Ruben to snoop for him
  • Ruben thinks Cesar should find out if Raquel's child is his and Cesar agrees
  • Marilu sneaks into Rick's room while he's sleeping and dreaming about getting it on with Ori. She gets a few sleepy kisses out of him, until he wakes up, kicks her out, and runs to the shower to wash her cooties off. While he does that, she rips apart his desk and bookshelves and finds Ricky's gun. She fondled it, looking crazy, and takes it with her. (Vivi)
  • Sam asks the bodyguard to kill JL; the bodyguard tells everything to JL and asks for his protection, but JL couldn't care less - he fires the guy
  • Tony and some guy, Feliciano, talk about the way the real estate business will work: fake invoices, poor quality materials
  • Maddy doesn't want to hire Seb, she screams at Tony, putting him in his place
  • Fabi isn't feeling too great; Seb apologizes once again and asks her to marry him; she says no
  • Oriana and JL meet; she tells him he can see Alina twice a day, but first they have to convince the girl that he's not evil (Good luck with that!)

And, in the meantime, enjoy  this video some more. Seriously, EVERYONE stop what you're doing and WATCH THIS! (Televisa galans wish you a Happy Valentine's Day). This is what wet dreams are made of.

Ha, I guess I can write a long Preview for tonight's episode, but I've spoiled you enough already!
Again, I'm very sorry for the mix-up.

Que Pobres Tan Ricos #26- 2/10/14: What Will MA Do? Nepo and Guendy Have a Chisme Fest!

Hola Amiguis! This capitulo was very fast this evening including the dialogue. I did this recap mainly from memory so if I got something wrong please let me know.

It is Day 22 of MA being in the same suit. I took off a couple days because in the beginning he changed his suit quite often, before he went on the run that is. So I think it is Day 22 of the same suit.

MA and Saul are talking about the million dollars set aside for the Menchacas. MA really wants the Menchanca's house now. Saul tries to talk him down. Look what Don Chuy has done, not only for MA but his whole family. Saul says by trying to take this house away from them, by some nefarious means, and chucking them out in the street who's to say they won't turn around and turn him into the cops? Has he thought of that. Even Lupita, what about her? She's been so kind, along with her Papa! All MA can think about is getting back everything that was taken from him, his life in Londres, etc. Saul is the voice of reason, and MA clearly is not listening. Saul even asks MA if he is willing to sell the Menchaca down the river for his own benefit? Saul also mentioned that MA would be the villian of the piece. He wants things his own way. Talk about entitled!
