Por siempre mi amor #6 12/9/13: We're All Just Here to Help

From last time: Andrea sobs as she tells Grandma Meanie that F-No is married to another woman. A rich woman. Meanie browbeats Andrea about how stupid she is. She should take her kids and move out.

F-No tells Gonzo that he's been outed as a bigamist. But not to worry. Isabel is dumb and in love with me. All is well.

Isabel watches her wedding pictures burn in the fireplace. Her ring is in the fire too. We don't get to see the phony thing melt.

The new: It's morning. Eugenia's casket is lowered into the grave. The family, including Osvaldo, tosses white roses onto the casket. Arturo kneels, clutches Aranza close to himself, and in front of the sobbing and grief-stricken group, slowly drops a handful of soil into the grave. The priest sprinkles Holy Water on the casket. Arturo and Aranza remember their last happy night with Eugenia. Dirt falls on the casket. Aranza weeps silently. More dirt falls. Osvaldo shakes his head. Sonia keeps her eyes on the prize. This she-dog is just getting started.

Back at the house after the funeral Aranza clings to her papa. She doesn't want to let him go, she misses her mama so much. Sonia tells Aranza she needs to change her clothes since the dress she has on will always remind her of her mother's funeral. You don't want to remember this sad day. You want to think happy thoughts about your Mama. Sonia convinces Aranza to go upstairs with Lucha and Gabino. Sonia's wasting no time putting her plan into motion. She turns to Arturo, "I know how Aranza feels. You remember that I lost my mother at a young age too. I think I can help her." He thanks her for understanding and offering to help. They hug.

Sonia heads upstairs and stops next to Aranza's bedroom door. Lucha is talking to Aranza and reassuring her; reminding her of her family and all the love she has around her. When she mentions Sonia Aranza thinks back to the backyard camp-out and Sonia's wandering hands. "I miss my Mom. Can you and Gabino take me to live in your hometown? I don't want to live here without my Mama."

Sonia has heard enough and turns in disgust, "I don't want you here either you meddlesome brat."

Arturo is placing all his wedding photos and mementos in a box. He looks at Eugenia's wedding band, his own larger band surrounding it. "Why did you leave me Eugenia? Why?" He places both rings in a small cloth bag, kisses it, puts it in the box and closes the lid. "You'll live forever in my memories, my love."

Next day: Gabi comes into the office cheerfully waving a folder. "I'm here to help you get your mind off your sadness and your troubles, Amiga! What you need is a trip! Acapulco, Puerto Azul, Cancun! Sun and beaches!" Well if Isabel won't go then I'm with you girlfriend. It's been freezing here and a warm beach sounds so fine. But no, Isabel won't go. Her work is her escape. She looks at her watch. "I'm going to be late!" She asks Gabi to come along with her on some unfinished business.

They go to Andrea's house. The kids are snacking on popcorn. Forgive me, but should the little one be eating popcorn? I remember giving my little sister popcorn when she was about the same age and she almost choked on it. My mother slapped the snot out of me for giving her popcorn. Estaban introduces himself then takes Angelito to play in the other room. Isabel tells Andrea, "We're here to help you and your hijos. " Andrea looks skeptical. Isabel thanks her for opening her eyes to that rat-bastard F-No. "We want to offer you a job and a scholarship to a good school for Esteban."

Sonia & Arturo face each other on the couch. Sonia, determined to get her catch, dangles the bait. "Aranza needs someone feminine around to guide her through this difficult time. I think I've come up with something that will help all of us. If it's alright with you, I could move in and look after her." "No, Sonia. I can't ask you to do that. It would be hard on you." Now she tugs on the line. "For me the most important thing in my life is that you are okay. All three of us are suffering. Aranza has lost her mama, you've lost your wife, I've lost someone who was more than a cousin to me, she was the only person who shares my blood. Eugenia and I were like sisters, we grew up together, shared our secrets, our adventures. Please don't blame me for wanting to stay with my only family." "But this would be difficult for you. You have your own life. I can't be selfish and ask you to do something like this." Sonia sets the hook. "The only selfish thing would be to not allow me to be here with the only family I have left." Arturo gives in. Sonia reels him in and embraces him tightly. Her face is positively orgasmic. It's creepy weird.

Sonia has attached herself to Arturo's arm as she is leaving. It's settled. She will bring her things tomorrow.

Gabino tells Lucha that the last few days have shown him how short life can be. "We aren't eternal. We have to settle things while we are here."
"I know what you want. You want me to forgive him. I can't. I won't."
"He's our son, our only son."
"He's our son, but Dante kept hanging out with that Gonzalo. He didn't care about what he did, that you almost went to prison, that we nearly lost the roof over our heads.."
"He was young."
"He was young, but I can't forgive him. If we are dead to him, then he is dead to me."

The women sit at the table. Isabel faces Andrea and takes her hand. "I know how you feel. You still love Fernando. He is the father of your children."
Gabi is aghast, "You still love him?"
Isabel turns and gives her the stink-eye. "Yes. I should hate him, curse him. But I can't."
She turns back to Andrea, "We are both his victims. But if we work together we can help each other heal." She pulls some papers from a folder. "Here are the papers for Esteban's school. You need to contact them to set up a date for the admission test." Andrea looks truly moved by Isabel's offer. "I can't believe you would help Fernando's family." Isabel tells her this is not charity. Gabi says, "We have a job for you. You'll earn your keep."
"My mother says all I'm good for is cleaning."
"What were you good at in high school?"
"Math. I got A's. I could do problems in my head before the other's could write them down."
"Perfect, you'll be Mauricio's accounting assistant!"
"No, I don't think I could do that."
Gabi jumps up from the table, "Then I guess we're done here." She picks up her purse and heads for the door. Isabel grabs Gabi's arm and laughs. "Gabi's my best friend, but she's a pain."
Gabi sits back down and looks at Andrea, "Forgive me for saying this but you and your kids have no future if you keep on working as a cleaning woman. This is a great opportunity."
"That's true. I'll do it! I'll work very hard and learn everything you have to teach me."

Isabel takes a deep breath, "Fernando still has to pay for what he's done to us. I am going to sue Fernando. But I need you to help me and provide your sons' birth certificates." Andrea hesitates. "He'll be angry... but yes, I'll do it."

Lucha and Gabino are putting food in the cupboards. Lucha wonders aloud why Sonia hasn't shown up yet. Since Senora Eugenia died Sonia has been doing things that are inappropriate; things that are not her place to do. But at least she's not moving in. Arturo comes in and confirms her worst fears. Sonia is coming to live in the house to look after Aranza. Please get her room ready. Arturo leaves and Lucha says, "What did I tell you? She's more clever than all of us."

F-No arrives at Andrea's building in a taxi. He notices Isabel's car is parked at the curb. As the three women approach he hides behind a telephone pole. None of them notice his fat head behind the pole. He listens as they say their good-byes.

Back inside Andrea tells Esteban the good news about her new job. There's a knock at the door. Maybe the ladies forgot something. Andrea opens the door and stares in disbelief.

Arturo and Aranza are headed to a basketball game on the playground. "Are you okay? Is school okay?" He tells her he knows how hard it is now that her Mama is gone. "You need to be strong." Arturo tells her that Sonia is moving in. Aranza looks sick.

"Hola, mi amor." F-No smiles wickedly and grabs Andrea. He pulls he outside and shoves her down the step. He puts the padlock over the door latch. "So you're gossiping with the ladies?" F-No grabs Andrea's hair and pushes her to her knees. "Please Fernando. Think of the boys."
"What do I care about them?"
Esteban looks out the window and sees F-No assaulting his mother and starts to yell. Angelito is screaming and crying.
"Please let me go. You're hurting me."
"Shut up! Shut up!"
Agatha has heard the screaming. Grandma Meanie is hobbling up the sidewalk and hears the kids screaming and crying. She swears by God that she will shut those brats up. She turns into the courtyard and sees Andrea on her knees with Fernando's hands around her throat. Meanie breaks into a dead run.

Agatha has come out and hits F-No on the head with a frying pan. Grandma Meanie grabs the pan and whacks him twice. "You bastard! I'll kill you!"

Why she doesn't actually kill him is beyond me. But I have to admit I am surprised by her coming to Andrea's defense in the first place.

The fracas has attracted a small crowd of neighbors who are standing behind Andrea, Meanie and Agatha. F-No grabs the frying pan away from Meanie. She screams at him to get out or she'll kill him. F-No decides not to press his luck and throws the pan down at her feet and walks away. Everyone is gasping for breath. The kids are still screaming. Suddenly Meanie remembers the pain in her leg.

Back at the playground Aranza's head is not in the basketball game. The coach benches her, Ileana and Dafne. Dafne asks, "What's wrong with you? They're going to win the game." Aranza tells her friends that her Aunt Sonia is moving in with them. Dafne says, "Ahhh. So you're getting a stepmother." Aranza thinks back on how Sonia's hand wandered around Arturo's leg, how she hugged him, leaned over him. Suddenly her stomach hurts really bad. Aranza collapses to the ground.

Esteban wants to know who that bad guy was. Meanie tells him, "Your papa, Esteban. That bad man is your papa." "Is it true, Mama?" Andrea cries, the baby is still screaming. Agatha looks at Meanie with disgust.

Sonia has arrived at Arturo's house with a magic clown car. Instead of clowns, this tiny car is filled with several very large and heavy suitcases. It looks like Sonia is here to stay.

Agatha offers Andrea a cup of tea. Meanie screams, "What about me? Nothing for me?" She berates her daughter and her neighbor.

Gabino is trying to get Sonia's suitcases up the stairs. He pulls hard but the suitcase doesn't budge. He can't manage this load by himself. Lucha offers to help after she answers the phone. Tita has called to check on Arturo and Aranza. Lucha tells her, "Sonia is moving in to take care of my girl Aranza." Tita is stunned. She throws the phone down. "I don't like this. I don't like Sonia. I don't like anything about this."

Arturo races over and picks Aranza off the ground. He sets her on the bench, the coach and girls gather around her as Arturo calls the doctor.

Agatha says heard the kids screaming. She wants Andrea to tell her what happened. Meanie asks why she opened the door. "Did you think Fernando was here to pick you up and take you to your new house? If you are that stupid you deserve what you get."
Andrea explains that Isabel and Gabi had visited her. They offered her a job.
Meanie snorts, "Ha! Do they want you to clean their toilets?"
"No it's an administrative job. And they are giving Esteban a chance to go to a good school."
"Ah, they must be crazy. Please. Why would she help her lover's wife?"
Agatha scolds, "Stop bullying your daughter. I want to hear what she has to say."
Andrea tells them she thought the women had come back because they'd forgotten something. She opened the door and it was F-No. He grabbed her and pulled her outside and locked the door. Meanie is angry and her leg is hurting her again. It's Andrea's fault. Agatha can't believe what she is hearing and shakes her head.

Arturo and the doctor talk. Aranza is lying on the exam table in the doctor's office. She's feeling better now. Dafne tells Aranza if Sonia moves in, she'll marry your dad. That's how it happens. You'll have a stepmother. Stepmothers are mean, horrible witches like those in the storybooks. Dafne has a stepmother so she knows.

Advances: Sonia makes Cinderella's stepmother look like Mary Poppins.

Corazon Indomable #152, 12/9/2013: A Bad Day for Burros, Jackasses, and Stubborn Mules

Burro= Filemon
Jackass= Jose Antonio
Mule= MC

Alvaro tells MC that he’s left everything to be by her side. He assures her the lawyer Oblivio got for her is awesome. MC doesn’t care. She doesn’t want anything that comes from Doris. Alvaro offers to pay the lawyer’s fees then.

The slowest bus to Mexico City, pulls Filemon along, with Maria slung over his back, flailing madly. The bus passengers make a commotion seeing the spectacle, the bus is stopped, and the ticked off bus driver cuts Maria and her burro loose. She’ll have to find alternative transport to D.F.

Carola and her fellow mean girl friend make nefarious plans to start a fight with MC, make the teacher guard think MC started the fight, and then have MC thrown in detention solitary. Bwahahaha!

MC turns down Alvaro’s offer. She’s surprised he just came here to see her, but he assures her he’s also visiting his family and taking care of other business. She admits Oblivio has come to see her, but she wants nothing to do with that bastard who’s once again going to marry Doris. But despite that, he’s the best person to take care of Lupita while she’s in jail. (MC doesn’t seem to grasp that by the time she gets out, Lupita won’t need anyone to take care of her. She’s not just asking Tav and Doris to babysit for a few hours!) Alvaro asks if she killed the painter. After a pause, MC stupidly says she did it.

TELEMUNDO Y MÁS: Santa Diabla -- Week of December 9, 2013

What surprises will our novela spring on us this week?  Who will dare to be tough-girl Alicia's Pygmalion?  Will she learn to wipe her fingers and mouth with a napkin when she eats pizza?  Will Mara be released from jail, still innocent of the martial arts, on the basis of Hortensia's dying declaration?  Will Santi remember who Inés is not?  Will anyone find bayou woman's body?  When Santa gets out of jail, will she still be the Diabla?  What is wrong with Victoria? (physically, wise guys, physically.)   Will Pancho catch Sebastián/Franco Narco guy?  Will he come to terms with his sexual orientation?  (Or do we still have doubts about this?)  Will it be Transito or Victoria who finally dispatches Patricia to the great beyond?  And Berto and Willy and willy and the baby and Begoña and Paula and Lucy and Daniela and Ivan and George and Lázaro and Elisa and Lisette and Arturo and their baby and Barbara and Francisca -- what will become of them?

I guess we'll have to wait and see.

Corazón Indomable Friday 12/06/13 Here To Visit Maricruz Olivares? Take A Number.

Clutching a colorful chicken to her ample bosom and leading her reluctant burro, Filemón, who has a turkey and a second chicken strapped to his back, la Indía Maria takes a moment to catch up on the local gossip with Santa... ¿Qué? I look back up at the paused TV screen... yes, that's Santa, a burro, Indía María and a healthy handsome hen... did I miss something?

"Do You Think We Could Get Jobs Posing Nude In Mexico?"

Wait... confused? Yeah, so am I. Thinking that someone may have been diddling with my drink, I gaze at the half empty pony glass from which I've been gently sipping some Gran Centinario Añejo. Looks OK... smells right... a cautious taste with just the tip of the tongue... Hmmm tastes fine... smoky, a bit of an astringent but gentle bite, hints of vanilla and cinnamon... let's move on.

Mentir Para Vivir #44 Fri 12/6/13 Making An Offer He CAN Refuse

Capítulo 44

Lo De Antes:

Lila receives a phone call from Inspector Gadget telling her that baby brother Berto has bought it, and she breaks down.  (Berto may have been a lazy good-for-nothing, irresponsible slug of a brother, but he was blood and he was her lazy, good-for-nothing, irresponsible slug, and blood is blood.)  She’s due at the police station for questioning and to identify the body.

Ricardo got Oriana’s new cell number from Paloma and called her at Fortress de los Falcón (OMG, Ft. Knox has nothing on this place!)  He wanted her to know there are new developments that he needs to discuss with her but that cannot be discussed over the phone; he suggested they meet at Mariano’s and not to worry about the PI since he’s gotten a different car as of that morning.  Unfortunately, Jose Luis’s showing up at her locked bedroom door wanting to speak with her has cut the call short. And, in an unusually demeaning and pathetic show of weakness, hunky hubby JL tearfully crawls up next to his frightened, cowering wife after swearing he’d never force her against her will to sleep with him, and begs her to allow him just one night by her side.

Lo De Despues:

Oriana shivers under her sheets, which she’s now pulled up to her neck, and refuses the hubster any kind of matrimonial mattress privileges.  (I’d say time to pull back out the old black book, amigo mío.)

At the same time, our Margaret-Keane-urchin-model-all-growed-up de Marilu visits with Ric to see what’s up since he’s not visited her and Fidelia for a while.  He gives her the lowdown on what’s been happening uptown: that among other things, Berto was shot to death in his hotel room for who knows what reason, that he’s got to see a judge the next day over Lila’s rightful demand to redivvy Daddy Gabe’s shares of Aresti Company stock, since publication of the news that Sebastian is not his Daddy’s bastard son after all, and that neither he nor Piero are either, tho’ he won’t go into why that is important at this point.

Weekend Discussion: When Good Novelas Go Bad

We've seen it happen more than once and it seems to happen more often in recent times than in the past. A novela begins on a great note and suddenly the characters behave inconsistently or the story makes no sense. We're seeing this now with Corazón Indomable, and with the last quarter of Porque el Amor Manda when we went from a comedy to a …. circus of evil. Real head-scratchers and we keep speculating why this happens.

Telemundo's Aurora started out well, as a science fiction version of Sleeping Beauty, but ended up bogging down in novela clichés it may have first tried to avoid. Televisa's Mariana de la Noche started out well even with the clichés but moved into total unreality in the second half. At least that one compensated by having a great leading man (Jorge Salinas) and an equally great male villain (César Évora).

What other novelas have you seen that did this?

Lo Que La Vida Me Robo #13 The Selling of Montserrat Thursday, December 5, 2013

Esmerelda’s House

Jose Luis and Refugio are enjoying a meal at Esmerelda’s modest but comfortable looking home. While Refugio is mid-bite, someone knocks on the door and wants in—it’s Dimitrio. Esmerelda tells him to go away and the boys on the lam—Jose Luis and Refugio—hide in the bedroom. Dimmy-Timmy shoves himself in the house. At first he offers to pay Esme for her services. When she reminds him that she wants nothing further to do with him, he tries to take shameless advantage of Esme and threatens to force himself on her. Just when it appears that Dimmy-timmy might try be successful at assaulting our favorite pole dancer, Refugio comes out of the bedroom and intervenes.

Dimitro thinks that Refugio is a client. Then the dim bulb in his diminished brain comes alight. “You have a BOYFRIEND”. Esme convinces Dim-inished capacity that Refugio is her boyfriend and he is in the Navy and those sailors do love a fight. Dimitro puts on a snotty face and Rufugio opens his eyes really wide as he gets up in Dimmy’s face.

This scene is not as dramatic as I have made it sound, I confess. Neither one of these men scares me. They remind me of two prissy over groomed dogs circling around one another in an upscale dog park. You just know that no one dog is going to bite or scratch the other because it might just damage his pedicure.

Dimitrio tries to throw his weight around and shove Refugio out of the house by using the name of his Daddy, the Admiral. Rufugio, who is dumber than he looks, reminds Dimmy that he knows the Admiral is out of town and cannot defend his wimp-a$$ son. Dimmy shoots back that Daddy Admiral Mendoza is back in Agua Azul, so ha ha ha. Jose Luis overhears this and this learns that Montserrat is back in town. Dimitrio leaves, Esme jumps on Renato/Refugio. No one has ever defended her like that. We can imagine that some love will now rain down in the hero of the hour.

At Pedro and Nadia’s

Pedro is talking with someone about continuing to keep surveillance on the Mendoza house. He still has his uses for men such as Jose Luis and Refugio. Meanwhile, Nadia comes up and show him the outfits she bought for each of them for Montserrat’s wedding. Pedro, clearly uninterested, gives her a ‘whatever’ look and shrug and tells her that her shopping is fine as long as it keeps her out of his hair. She leans down to offer him a kiss, but he pushes her away telling her not to  “start’. Ouch.

Corazon Indomable #150 – Thursday, 12-5-13 – Mean Girls in Women’s Prison Are Like Mean Girls Everywhere, Except with Uglier Clothes.

Some scenes are combined and may not be in strict viewing order.

News of Maricruz’ Tragic Situation Spreads to the Lower Rungs of Society

The lawyer (Navarro?) tells Octavio that Maricruz has been transported to the Women’s Prison. Tav asks what can Navarro do? Not much—he couldn’t get MC to recant her original confession or alter any of her testimony. Tav feels her case is hopeless, as she’s presumed guilty. (His case is hopeless as well—we know he sold himself to Doris in exchange for the lawyer’s fees.)

News of the murderous Maricruz spreads quickly beyond the city’s top drawer of art and culture to her circle of friends and family:
  •     Natasha calls Padre Julian with the scandal. He saw the papers but can’t believe the news. He’s happy Natasha sold her painting for the benefit of the poor.
  •     JA tells Ester what he heard from the padre. He believes neither the nude pose nor the killing, although MC testified she couldn’t control her rage. Ester reminds JA how impulsive MC always was and asks when will he forget his old love. He stomps out to collect rent.
  •     Padre Julian continues his rounds, finding Alvaro on the job site and sharing the scandal. Alvaro will try to help. In a later conversation, he tells the padre he’s taken a two-weeks leave to go help MC. No matter her situation, she’s fragile deep down inside and Alvaro can’t forget her. (Why don’t they gather all of MC’ love victims into a SWAT team to bust her out of prison?)
  •     Perico comes home to break the bad news to Solita and Nilda. He tells Soli not to worry, MC didn’t really pose naked! She’s a good person, who wouldn’t hurt anyone. (OK, naked or clothed, the bigger worry is the prison sentence.) Nilda will try to help.

Por siempre mi amor #3 12/4/2013

Recapper’s Note: Scenes were combined for sanity and continuity

Lo del pasado :
The police detective is in full-on lawyer mode as she asks Isabel if she is sure she didn't sign the checks that withdrew all that cash from her account. She repeats the question and hands Isa copies of the checks in question: "Did you, yes or no, sign these checks?" "No, of course not," she insists to the investigator. "My signature was forged."

Lo de Nuevo:

My Mother Is Sickly and Evil ¿Captas?

Little Aranza begins her short descent into spoiled brat-dom. She channels her inner Nikki Brizz, chiding her two amiguitos for playing while her mother is sick and they can’t camp and karaoke anymore. One of the friends suggests that she’ll get her mother to go speak with Eugenia and arrange for another camp and karaoke. Aranza isn’t satisfied by this perfectly reasonable compromise and puts out a laser-beam side-eye that says “No fun is to be had while my mother is sick. ¿Captas?” even as she says, “Don’t bother, I’ll be fine.” After basketball practice is over, Aranza’s friends ask her why she’s still sadmad. “My mother is a bad person.” “No, she isn’t,” the amiguitas counter. Yes she is, Aranza insists. I thought you all were my friends and would support my sick twisted vision that my mother is purposefully getting sick to cramp my style and disturb my peace. Since you are not buying, even at three for a peso, the sick twisted vision I’m selling, don’t say another word to me. Ok? The amiguitas, along with Viewerville, go wait, what? I thought you loved your mother. Why is Eugenia evil, again?

The Very Merry Widow is Free to Give to the Needy

Bruno comes in the kitchen surprised to see Tita, along with her housekeeper—I really dislike the word ‘maid’, so I never use it—packing foodstuffs like oil and sugar to give to the church to help la gente necesitada (the needy). Bruno has on a Que the heck? face since he notes Tita isn’t the type to engage in charity work. "Well, your father wouldn't let me. Now that he’s no longer with us, I’ll do all that I wanted to do but couldn’t." Sayeth Bruno, "Was life with Dad so unhappy and boring?" "Your father was a marvelous man," Tita says, "but he was a bit controlling; I've always wanted to do something more than just be a housewife. Now's my chance. I want to live, do something and I will do something." Sounds like she was more oppressed than bored, but oppression tends to get boring after a while I suppose. Let’s just say Tita is a very merry widow.

The Anvil Makes Its Slow and Sure Descent on Eugenia

Eugenia drives up and the domestic couple (Lucha is the wife, Gabino is the husband)—that’s what married husband/wife household help are formally called in the US. The wife does the housekeeping stuff, while the husband does the porter/landscaping/maintenance man stuff—meets her. Eugenia asks Lucha if Aranza is home and Eugenia then remembers that Aranza is at a basketball practice. This brain cell overload leads to a severe headache, which Eugenia once again ignores and decides to just cure with rest. Major digression ahead. (Can I just say that I really dislike this setup of Eugenia’s death. She’s a young, fit woman of childbearing age. Why is she taking anti-coagulants any way, even as we know that Prima Sonia is giving Genia the special telenovela pill of death of unknown provenance. It’s just such a specious way to kill of a young healthy woman.)

As she lies down, the headache of death really goes into full swing. She’s coming home to ya, Elizabeth! Eugenia’s headache becomes so torturous she rises from bed and summarily drops to the floor head first, apparently lifeless.

At Tita’s, a Love Connection

Isabel and Tita pull up to Tita’s place and are greeted by Tita’s housekeeper. We find out that Tita is the new redecoration client Isabel and her best friend Gabriela were raving about before finding out they were being robbed blind. Tita’s housekeeper, shod in a breezy aquamarine blue top and white skirt—Tita makes sure her help looks fierce!—happily (she knows Tita is a good boss) tells Gaby and Isa that Tita is busy at the moment but she will gladly take the samples to her boss to review while Isa and Gaby wait for Tita. While Gabriela is waiting in the living room—where Isabel is, no one knows, Bruno walks by the living room spots Gabriela and the mutual love-at-first-sight-eyes, and subtle romantic music—I appreciate that Univision/Televisa—commences. Gaby flirts up a storm as Bruno roughly says “Who are you?” and Gaby says “You don’t live in Mexico, you aren’t Mexican? Everyone knows who Gabriela San Roman is.” Breaking the ice with this joke, Gabriela clarifies, “I’m here to remodel Tita’s house.” Bruno, still impactada googly eyes in love, says “Discúlpame tú por haber sido tan áspero.” (Pardon me for having been so rude—literally, rough) Googly-eyes and nervous laughter commences as Bruno tells Gaby welcome to her home.

Sonia’s Got Secrets
A priest and someone named Cuca discuss a little girl that was baptized Maria Elena whom Cuca says is Sonia’s daughter. Apparently Sonia visits the house where the nina is to see someone named Don Hilberto but ignores Maria Elena despite Cuca insisting she gets to know her daughter. The priest says there’s nothing he and Cuca can do about Sonia’s neglect of Maria Elena because we’re not even sure the little girl we baptized as Maria Elena is Sonia’s daughter.

The priest flashes back to seeing woman with her hair and face sloppily covered with a red scarf—we see some of this woman’s blonde hair—running and dropping a basket in her hand right in front of him. It’s a bassinet with a baby. Of course, the priest picks up the baby. Cuca breaks the priest’s reverie by insisting that Maria Elena is Sonia’s. This baby was delivered to the church the same day Sonia stopped walking around with a pregnant belly. But we’re not sure, the priestinsists. I know it, padre, Cuca says. I feel it in my blood. (I never knew the telenovela call of the blood disease afflicted people who weren’t related to the person they were alleging is blood related to someone). We cut to a sweet-faced, adorable about eight year old Maria Elena, who’s more indigena/mestiza looking than blonde like Sonia, with other girls in their school uniforms making a bed. The school matron supervising the bed making isn’t pleased with Maria Elena’s bed making skills and rips up the bed telling Mari E that she will make the bed over and over until it’s perfect. But to my eye, Mari E’s bed making skills are better than mine and ninety percent of the people in the world.

Mean Girl/Cutie Pie Aranza Discovers Her Mama

Aranza returns to her sweet, obedient personable self as she gets home and is greeted by Lucha and Gabino. “Where’s my mom?” she sweetly asks. Oh she’s feeling a little bad, says Gabino. Lucha comes on the scene and tells Arazna says dinner is ready but first she has to wash her hands and change her clothes. Aranza says, “Oh no, I have to see dear old mom first.” You’d never know an hour ago she called her mother everything but a child of God to her friends. In any event Aranza runs to her parents’ bedroom and sees her unconscious mother on the floor. She’s shrieking, wondering why her mother won’t answer her. The shrieking alerts Lucha and Gabino in the kitchen and they run to Arazna’s aid. We cut to Art Dad at the construction site working hard supervising the work; he apparently overhears, but ignores Arazna’s screams. (I’m very confused by this. Their house is by the construction site and they can hear, over the audible construction noise, Arazna’s screams? I’m emphasizing this because it’s not as if Art Dad was the only one who heard Arazna’s screams, like it was intuition, but someone beside him did too and ignored it.)
Lucha, Gabino and Arazna start slapping Eugenia to wake up until Gabino tells Lucha to call Art Dad. He also puts a pillow under Eugenia’s head and continues, along with Arazna, to try to wake up Eugenia. Another digression: Why do they always do this in tns? Someone collapses and instead of immediately calling the emergency services or a personal doctor, they call a family member who then tells the housekeeping staff who discovers the body to call the ambulance or that they’ll call the ambulance. The help can’t know the emergency services number or what? Anywho, because of the vital minutes lost calling Art Dad instead of the Dr or ambulance, Eugenia remains unconscious, risking brain death. Lucha finally calls the Dr who makes sure to ask if they tried to revive Genia with alcohol under the nose. They did—they had the bottle to prove it.

Gaby Continues to Make Sense While Isa Continues to Bury Her Head in the Sand

At Casa Arte Gaby gently asks Isabel if it’s wise of her and Fernando to go ahead and buy a big million-dollar house while the authorities are investigating the fraud. Isa with her bug-eyes freaks out telling Gaby to mind her business because the house she’s looking to buy is a wise purchase because it’s the inheritance she and Fernando will leave for their children. Gaby gives Isa (and Viewerville) her, “I tried to knock some sense into this girl, but oh well” look.

Smarmy and Slimy Fernando shows up at the end of this with his forked tongue filled with compliments for Isabel. She’s the most beautiful woman in the world; no, the universe! Fernando calls Gaby, chaparrita—squirt or sport—as he and Isabel leave their house built on lies. Gaby exclaims after they leave, and we can agree, “I hate that guy!”

Abuela Meanie Rides Again

Abuela Meanie fusses at Andrea and Esteban for being inconsiderate, rude, taking advantage of her charity and being such a hassle they must be waiting for her to die so they can get her house. Andrea says Abuela Meanie shouldn’t talk like this in front of Esteban but her rant continues…>>>FF

The House Built on Lies

Fernando and Isabel are in a lawyer’s office with their IDs spread out for him to copy and give them papers to sign to buy their house. The house sellers are their too and look like a real loving couple. Isabel asks the lawyer’s name again, It’s Licenciado Cuadros, ma’am, at your service. The lawyer is obviously shady as he gives Fernando a knowing look as if they are perpetuating a scam. As Isabel gushes about Fernando getting her her dream house, Licenciado Cuadros says it’s all due to her loving husband. Isabel thanks her good fortune—oh girl, you’ll be paying a fortune for what your loving husband has done. As they’re celebrating buying their new house with a drink at a bar—Fernando says Isa’s house, Isa says “our house,” a photographer surreptiously snaps Fer and Isa as they liplock.

Gaby meets a friend, Edgar, and tells him she suspects Fernando, who Edgar also doesn’t like, is fraudulently saying he’s buying Isa’s dream house. Edgar agrees to look into the public property records to see if Fer is on the up-and-up with the house purchase. Thanks Gaby says, I need to know this is for real, because if it’s not, it’ll be a gut punch to Isabel.

We cut to Fer and Isabel and Isa gets a call from Mauricio saying they have the bank tapes showing who robbed her. The next morning Fernando is in bed while Isa is dressed for a doctor’s appointment to a fertility specialist. Fernando pretends to agree with Isa doing this and calls her guapa, but after Isa leaves, the louse complains that Isa insists on getting pregnant and he’s not pleased with that and he wonders what the doctor will say is Isa’s issue.

Eugenia Finally Gets to a Hospital, or These Things Happen

Hours later—the moon was out—they finally take Eugenia to a hospital and
Dr. Carranza the personal doctor runs tests and finds out Eugenia had a stroke. As he’s explaining this to Arturo, Arturo can’t believe it. “How is this possible if Eugenia always took her medication? She knew they were vital.” Dr. Carranza says “Yes, Eugenia was disciplined, but these things happen. Her heart rhythm may have been off. Maybe the medication dosage wasn’t strong enough.” “Tell me my wife will get better,” Art pleads. “I can’t promise you that says,” Dr. Carranza, “but I’ll tell you if anything changes.” When Dr. Carranza goes to exam Eugenia she’s doing worse. Her heart rate and blood pressure drops and she’s apparently brain dead. With the slow long beep of the vitals monitor we cut to a sleeping Aranza who sees her mother before her in her bedroom in white. They drink tea together. Eugenia tells Aranza that she loves her, always will, and her father will take care of you. We cut back to the hospital and they get Genia’s vitals up, but Carranza isn’t sure Genia will ever wake up.

Cuca’s Digging for the Truth, But Doesn’t Want Anyone to See Her Shovel

We see that Cuca is a housekeeper for Sonia’s step-dad Don Hilberto (?). Don Hilberto asks if Sonia came to visit. Cuca says she doesn’t know, but Hilberto says that Sonia only ever comes by when she wants money. Puede ser (Could be), says Cuca. What’s more important to Cuca is asking Don Hilberto if she can visit the children’s home nearby. “Why are you so interested in those children?” Hilberto asks accusingly. Cuca talks fast and emphasizes that those children don’t have parents and we have to give such kids a bit of love and care. Hilberto says Cuca can go at dinner time to visit.

Andrea’s Terrible, Horrible, No-Good, Very Bad Day

Long-suffering Andrea suffers another body-blow when her neighbor shows her as she’s walking home with her boys a newspaper headline with a picture showing—the one the photographer secretly got in the bar—La exitosa diseñadora Isabel López Cerdon con su esposa Fernando Cordova (Noted designer Isabel Lopez Cerdon with her husband Fernando Córdova.) Cara de completamente impactada y triste de Andrea.

First Encounter

Isabel is at the hospital leaving the fertility specialist and wonders out loud why she can’t get pregnant. She gets on the elevator and she shares the ride with Arturo, who barely notices Isa since Eugenia’s brain death is on his mind. Isa though, definitely notices her handsome elevator mate, and then the elevator gets stuck. Isa is horrified, but Arturo doesn’t even look up and says “Don’t worry. These things are safe.”

Avances

Aranza returns to “I hate mom” mode while speaking with her friends saying it may be better if Eugenia never wakes up. Sonia rejoices with crazy eyes that Arturo will be hers. Isabel says cries repeated “No puedo ser” as she watches the surveillance tape showing who robbed her. Arturo cries at Eugenia bedside asking her to help him make the right decision.

Corazon Indomable #149 Wed Dec 4th Maricruz visits the pokey

*Ahem, hi patio peeps, I'm sitting here with my laptop trying to figure out how to start this recap, I tried to get out of writing it, I considered faking my own death and then thought that was just too drastic, then I thought about just posting a discussion page and telling you folks there would be no recap because I got a case of smallpox, but then I realized Carlos would call me out on it so thought better of it, I also thought about coming down with a case of the bird flu and swine flu, but again thought better of it. I have watched Judge Judy, gone on Twitter, checked Facebook a million times and even walked down to the corner liquor store in search of booze, yes, this show has made me turn to the bottle. Anyhoo, it is now midnight and I figured I should just get it over with. I hope you enjoy.*

We start with Maricruz sitting in jail, she's going to take the blame Alfonso's murder, Octavio will take care of Lupita and she loves him so much that she will sacrifice herself for him. She talks to herself about how none of this would of happened if Alfonso had not painted her in the nude, he brought shame on her and Octavio could not handle it. She will stay in jail to protect him! Later she receives a visit from Mercedes who is more upset about the fact that she is not going to be able to get married after all than she is about the fact that someone died.

Aresti Breton
Ricky, Piero, and Manriquez meet .  Ricky hands Manriquez the summons (citatorio). Manriquez asks who or how they're planning to get a sample of Sebastian's DNA.  Piero explains the DNA tests for Ricky and him should be completed within 2 days.  He also explains to Manriquez that he may not be Sebastian's father.  Manriquez then informs Ricky he may not need to present himself in person in response to the summons because so much time has passed and the statute of limitations has passed.  Manriquez can attend to those matters as his representative unless it's necessary for him to attend....or whoever turns out to be Seba's daddy.

Lo Que La Vida Me Robó #12-12/04/13: Of Heart Attacks and Looming Heartaches

A couple of scenes have been combined so I can avoid some of the shifts back and forth.  I know it's a long one, so let's get started!

REFRITO # 1:  Bar in Agua Azul:  We begin tonight's very exciting epi with a repeat of DIM and Adolfo discussing DIM's planned fake courtship of Femme Uni-brow Josefina for dinero. DIM says he'll do it as long as he doesn't have to do it every day but, boy, does it suck for him.  He doesn't want his mother to know, since she might really make him marry J. He proclaims he needs to be with a real woman pronto to be able to help him forget the couple of seconds he had to spend with Josefina today.

What More Do You Want, Mamá--REFRITO #2 and more  (We're guessing just about everything, Montse)

Madama Graciela and her daughter/princessa/meal ticket Montse arguing in M's bedroom of the Hacienda Mendoza.  Monserrat has turned into MONSTERrat is going on a very impassioned tirade concerning the fact that Gracie has basically gotten everything she wanted and succeeded in totally dominating Montse's life:  Gracie found Montse's husband, planned the wedding--"What more do you want, Mama?" she cries.  "What more more do you want?"  It seems that what Gracie mostly wanted just then was to organize a little dinner to announce the engagement of Montse and Ale, but never mind her ambition for that particular instant is fairly small since Montse is right in a larger way and continues screaming as Gracie attempts to calm her down--"Don't touch me!"  "Leave me in peace!"  After much screaming and crying from Monster, Gracie eventually begins to suspect that maybe Monster doesn't want her mama's crazy, badly dressed nalgas around just then and leaves.

Por siempre mi amor #2 12/3/13: Sonia's not a happy camper and that anvil over Fernando isn't going anywhere not matter how far he has to scamper!

Recap by Corazon Salvaje

(Things are already getting good and it's only the second chapter! I'm hooked on this and hope you enjoy my recap- my FIRST recap!)
We begin our daily chapter with Eugenia and Arturo (who will be baptized Art Dad by yours truly) who are giddy because they are palnning a trip somewhere and are debating whether to leave their daughter Aranza with Sonia, the dear damn dame we will hate along the way, or bring her along for the ride. Obviously she is going with them and cue the male and female maids who are giddy as well. They appear to be in love as well and express it just like our for-the-moment protagonistic duo are to at some point.

Corazon Indomable, #148, 12/03/13 Promising painter dies in his prime.

His best work, "La dama desnuda", will surely become one of Mexico’s most glorious works of art.

Mad-Genius is at the gallery and notices that his painting is gone. He goes ballistic, starts to scream, goes to the police to announce the robbery. This would be the second stolen painting at the gallery and the police men think that Mad-Genius is completely crazy and that this is all probably just a publicity stunt to gather recognition for some mediocre works of art (heh, no arguments here).

Tav gets back to his hotel, just in time for Doris to call and ask him to have lunch together. Seeing him in his pilotonto outfit and playing his usual "bored out of his mind" game with Doris gives me a huge déjà-vu feeling… Are we back on Isla Dorada, with more than 100 episodes of this mess to endure?
No! (pfiu!)
After noticing that Tav is being rather distant (but rolling her eyes when she says it – not even Doris can take her love fest for Tav serious anymore), she gives him the latest news: the gallery has been robbed AGAIN.
Tav couldn’t care less, but then Doris mentions La Dama Desnuda, who is none other than his lovely MariCruz. Ay Caray Tav has written all over his face.
He goes to the gallery and sees the two paintings or the ensemble or whatever they are. He’s shocked and heartbroken and whatnot; tears swelling in his eyes, he swears his love for MC dies today! This is so riveting, I can barely contain my yawns.
Playboy and Hustler (especially!) could learn a thing or two from Alfie about what real porn is (no, they really couldn’t!). THIS is what all the escandalo is about? Seriously???
Anyway, Tav must recognize MC’s naked body from that time, ages ago, when they used to actually make love, because he hasn’t gotten ANY from her in the last 130 episodes.
He thinks MC and Alfie made fun of him (granted, that wouldn’t be too hard) and he plans to kill Alfie (but he doesn’t say it out loud, so he might be smarter than MC, after all… which isn’t that much to begin with, but still!).

Lo que la vida me robó, cap. 11, Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2013: But Will She Love Me Tomorrow?

The rehash:
Capitán Robledo asks Mayor Pedro to let the Navy find the renegade seamen.  But he's wasting his breath -- Pedro and the crooked police chief intend to do their own manhunt.  And for them, it's Finders Keepers.

Said fugitives spot a shack in the woods where they can hole up.

Graciela pulls poor old Lauro out of bed.  Alejandro has taken the bait and she's not letting him get away.

Alejandro is achingly sweet and sincere.  He looks at Montserrat and sees an angel; he touches her and he burns; he kisses her and he knows he's in love.

The new:

Somewhere outside of Aguazul
Refugio makes it to the shack and collapses. The bandages over his wound are intact but slightly bloody.  José Luis wants to go to Aguazul for more antibiotics -- and yes, to see Montse and persuade her to escape with him.  And if she refuses?  Well then he'll carry her off.

Mentir Para Vivir #41 Tue 12/3/13 Now Is Not the Time For Snacking, Berto! Focus!

Blue Bungalow Kitchen: At the refrigerator, Berto grabs Celio from behind and slams his head into the wall. Celio lands face down on the floor, but Berto flips him over so that Celio can easily identify his blue-eyed perpetrator in the possible police line . Anyways, terrified Celio lies helplessly, staring vacantly into Berto's face and sh*tting cement blocks. Understandably, throttling butlers can burn a lot of energy, and since the refrigerator door is wide open, Berto reviews his snack options. He spies a paper bag filled with what could to be some delicious Bolo Bar leftovers, but instead of ribs and slaw, he discovers the guns. He runs away, leaving Celio lying in a halo of his blood.

Apparently, a grown man, sprinting down the street and across a parking lot, in the dark, dressed in all black and wearing black gloves is not an oddity in Mexico. Berto runs to a dumpster and tosses his gloves, but keeps the mask since it's hiding the bag. He calls Jose Luis and lets him know that he’s got the guns. Jose Luis tells him to bring them to the Platina Hotel. They'll meet up later. Berto wants to return to the Casa Bonita, shower and change into something more comfortable and less IJustMuggedSomeOne-ish looking.

Mentir Para Vivir #40 Mon 12/2/13 The more things change, the more Paloma wants them to stay the same

Sorry for being a little late with the recap, but they talk sooo much and sooo fast!!!

We start with a repeat of Friday’s fight between Stallone and Van Damme. And the winner is… Chuck Norris, of course!
NOPE, different show…

Allow me start over. Since Jardinera’s description of the scene was stellar, I’m going to concentrate less on the actual fight and more on whatever goes through my head whenever I see handsome men fighting.
So, Ricardo and Jose Luis get into it over who has more rights over Oriana (basically). The shirts don’t come off, which is a bad direction choice (in my humble, neutral opinion), but their soaked, glistening upper pecks make the scene quite captivating all the same. On the downside, whenever one of them gets punched, no blood comes out, but a sort of watery, milk like liquid, that is kind of disgusting.
So Ric pushes JL in the pool and JL comes out of it with his gun pointing at Ric, looking drenched and scorching hot at the same time.
Oriana doesn’t seem impressed with his hunkiness, though (if this won’t convince her, nothing will). She intervenes to stop the fight, and so does Lucina. JL gets out of the pool and I notice he hasn’t even lost a button, his shirt is wet, but still looks impeccable – has Ric lost his ascot at the very least? Lame fight, you guys!
Everyone seems terrified by the gun JL is carrying, they ask him to leave immediately. He goes, but not before warning Oriana to remember their talk. As Ric is being taken inside, Lucina frowns at JL, while holding onto a baseball bat, but then she sees that Raquel has observed the entire fight from afar and didn’t intervene. Lucina is upset, but I kind of understand Raquel: she was enjoying the show too much… Two men fighting in the rain is like two women wrestling in chocolate, right?

Paloma and Padre Mariano talk about Tru-nes. The old lady wants to know where she was buried and Padre promises to get the information. Then Paloma finds out that Oriana and Lina are gone and she’s upset because they didn’t even say goodbye. Padre tries to explain that Oriana feels too much shame right now; when she decided to impersonate Ines she was very scared, she was forced to do it by circumstances; that’s why she even wanted to leave that time when she was gone for half a night. And she never surrendered to the police because of her daughter. Paloma now understands everything much better, but she still wonders why Oriana didn’t trust her with the truth.
She realizes that the fear she had for her husband made it impossible for her to find her nieta in time, but she now loves Oriana and Lina so much, they gave her back her happiness, brightened her days. Now she also understands why Oriana never accepted her presents, too, but she wants her back in the house because she loves her very much and she can’t abandon her. Padre explains that Oriana has a lot of problems and she doesn’t want Paloma involved, but Paloma insists that she wants to help out. Also, has Ric abandoned Oriana??  Padre doesn’t know what to answer to that.

Por siempre mi amor #1 12/2/13: These Checks Don't Balance

We open on a festive family scene - a lovely couple descends the stairway as their daughter throws flower petals. We hear applause and cheers and there are hugs all around. The party is very small, just the happy couple, their servants, and a few guests.

Another party scene. Isabel looks lovely in a royal blue strapless dress. "Where's Fernando? He was here just a moment ago." Her friend Gabriela doesn't seem surprised and mutters, "It never fails." Isabel is not amused. She warns Gaby about bad-mouthing her man. Gaby nods and makes the the "zipping her lips" gesture. I already have the feeling that the yet unseen Fernando is a schmuck.

Back at the house the small family party is all smiles. Eugenia tells Arturo that she is the luckiest woman in the world. Eugenia's daughter Aranza jumps onto her mother's lap, smiles at her parents and proclaims them the bestest parents in the world ever. Eugenia tells the maid (whose dress reminds me of Dorothy's in the Wizard of Oz) to please bring a glass of milk for Aranza to join in the toast. Everyone raises their glasses. But where is Aunt Sonia?

Sonia is upstairs emptying pills from a brown bottle into a small container. She closes the container and puts it into the drawer of the nightstand, then puts a single pill into a kleenex. She tucks the brown bottle back into her evening bag and snaps it shut. "Oh, Eugenia. You think you're taking anti-coagulents." She smirks. "I just wish these pills would work faster." Sonia stands and straightens her hair as the maid comes into the room. "They're waiting for you."

"I was just on my way down." Sonia walks out. The maid looks skeptical and glances around the room. Nothing seems out of place... but still...

Downstairs Sonia gives Eugenia the kleenex with the pill inside. "Gracias, Sonia. You're always so concerned with my health." Eugenia puts the pill on the coffee table. "First, we must toast." Everyone raises their glass and shouts, "Feliz Aniversario!" Glasses clink. Everyone drinks. Sonia lets her eyes wander over the happy scene with just a touch of malice on her lips.

Isabel's missing husband Fernando enters her office. He crosses over to a desk and picks up a black handbag. He removes something from it. It's a checkbook. "Oh, Isabel my love. It is so easy to steal from you. Seriously." Yes. I was right. Fernando is a Grade A Schmuck. He rips a check from the checkbook, folds it and tucks it into his inner jacket pocket. He puts the checkbook back into the purse. "And all the money I have left to steal." He smiles.

Fernando walks into the party saying "Buenos Noches" to everyone he passes. Very few return his greeting. Okay, if that's not a tell I don't know what is.

He walks up and takes Isabel by the waist, "Are you happy, Beautiful?" Isabel grabs hold of him. "Oh, yes my love! We've been waiting to cut the ribbon!" She tries to get Fernando to stand by her side. He brushes her off with "It's your moment, my love." Gaby is having none of this. She growls at Fernando, "Hurry up Fernando! We haven't got all night!" Fernando moves closer but as the women count down to the ribbon cutting, "Uno...Dos...Tres..." he backs away. The ribbon falls to the floor amid cheers. Isabel pulls Fernando close to her side. He protests, "No photos. You know I have a fear of photos. They steal your soul." Say what?? "Besides, I have a surprise for you." He turns Isabel around as fireworks light up a sign that reads:

Feliz Inauguration
Y Todo El Excito
Que Te Mereces
Mi Adorada Isabel

"Wow! Fernando!" Isabel is ecstatic. She grabs Fernando and plants kisses on him as a photographer snaps away. Fernando spots him. What to do? What to do? Fernando decides Isabel must have her favorite drink, a Cosmopolitan, but he can't seem to find a waiter. He moves off as Isabel waves a waiter down. "Get her a Cosmopolitan."

Arturo talks to his guests. He is very happy in his marriage despite his parents' objections. They wanted him to marry Maracel, but Maracel would never have made him as happy as Eugenia has. But Arturo's marriage has cost him. He was cut out of his inheritance.

Eugenia and her mother Tita talk about Bruno. He needs a woman. He needs a family. His life is nothing but work, work, work. Sonia walks over, "Did you take your pill?" Eugenia hasn't, so Sonia offers to get her a glass of water. A cell phone rings. The doctor answers and has a very brief conversation. It's an emergency. He must leave. Suddenly everyone must leave. I guess they all came in the same car. The small party starts to break up. All that food...

Isabel and Fernando are canoodling. He sees something across the room and pulls away. "I have another surprise for you. But it's in the car." He leaves and Isabel gives a blissful sigh.

Fernando has followed the photographer out of the building. "Give me the film from your camera." "Perdon?"

At the anniversary party Tita and Bruno head for the door. As they leave Eugenia suddenly clutches her forehead in pain and has to sit down. Did no one ever tell her not to mix alcohol and pills?

Arturo and the Doctor talk outside. "Your father is all alone now that your mother has passed. I'm sure he'd enjoy being a Grandfather to Aranza." "My father is free to visit. My door is always open." The doctor consigns himself to the father-son rift and says his good-byes.

Tita and Bruno come down the stairs. In this lighting her hair matches her blouse. Tita tells Arturo she isn't leaving, she's being taken. Bruno wonders why she always has to make a scene. "He always wants to leave when we start talking about him getting married." No wonder he's hustling her into the car.

Eugenia and Sonia talk in the living room. Eugenia's headache is getting worse. Sonia offers to call the doctor. "No, No. I'll be fine. I'm just tired. Please don't tell Arturo about this. I don't want to worry him." Famous. Last. Words. I think I see a vulture sitting on the mantle.

Aranza tells her mom she is tired. It's late. Eugenia and Sonia take her up to bed. The maid takes a full cheese plate from the table. Suddenly I'm hungry.

Outside, Fernando asks the photographer, "Do you want to make it home alive? Do you want your kids to be orphans? Do you want your wife to be a widow?" Well, I guess that's one way of getting straight to the point. The photographer shakes his head no, no, and no. He quickly takes the film from his pocket. He hands it to Fernando. First it was checks and now film. All paper, nothing digital. Fernando is an old-school criminal. Fernando pockets the film and tells the photographer, "Now, see how easy that was?" He smiles an evil smile and heads back into the party.

Aranza wants her Papa. Sonia offers to go and fetch him. My, Sonia certainly has been helpful tonight hasn't she?

Downstairs, Arturo is gazing lovingly at a picture of his wife and daughter. A woman's hands encircle his waist from behind. We see a smiling Sonia rest her head on his shoulder. Arturo smiles and leans his head against hers until he realizes it's not his wife that has him wrapped in this tight embrace. He jumps away. Sonia tells him that she just came down to get him. Aranza wants him upstairs. Sonia looks at him innocently. Arturo appears thoroughly rattled by what has just happened.

Fernando smiles at Isabel. Then we see the same smile in a black-and-white photo in a small shabby room. A young woman, Andrea, is playing on the bed with a toddler. Her older son tells her, "You never pay any attention to me." She tells him, "Come on. We can jump on the bed together!" They laugh and jump. Andrea's mother Mine storms into the room. "Enough! Enough!!" She screams that she is tired of the noise, she is tired of watching the kids, she is tired of the kids themselves. "I wish you'd take your kids and get out!" The poor kids are crying now. Andrea looks ashamed.

Back at the party Fernando takes Isabel aside. He tells her not to scream and opens a small box. It's a gold band with diamonds. There is much screaming and excitement. Isabel puts the ring on and wags her hand toward Gaby and her friends. They are all impressed. They should be. Something tells me Isabel paid through the nose for that cheap cubic zirconia.

Eugenia and Sonia say their good-nights as Arturo and Aranza kneel down together to pray. Eugenia and Sonia talk in the hall. "I really appreciate all you did for us, Sonia. You are the best cousin in the world. You're like my sister."
"Wasn't your anniversary party rather small?"
"Yes, but Arturo prefers it that way."
"Still that was a lot of expense for just a few people.... I'm worried about your headaches."
"I'll see a doctor soon. You know every day I thank you for introducing me to Arturo." Did I detect a wince from Sonia?

Andrea is looking through the paper. Grandma Meanie wants to know what she's looking for. "I'm looking for a second job."
"You don't expect me to watch your kids while you work more hours at the hospital?"
"No, I'm hoping to find something that I can do from home."
"Ha!" She laughs, "Like doing something on the Inter-neeet?"
"We don't have a phone."
"No we don't and it's your fault. All the money gets spent on your kids."
"I'm sorry. I'm so sorry."
"You're always sorry. You still believe that worthless Fernando will come back."
"He will come back. He's my husband and the father of my children."
"He'll come back and leave you with another child. You're a fool. Open your eyes." Mine gives a derisive snort. She walks out calling on The Lord or a Saint to open Andrea's eyes.

Eugenia and Arturo are cuddled on the sofa. They are talking to Sonia. Sonia suggests they take a trip. A second honeymoon. She offers to take care of Aranza. They tell her they only take trips as a family. Besides, Sonia is the one who needs a man and a honeymoon! How about Bruno? Sonia blasts that idea like a clay pigeon. Bruno just doesn't do it for her. Sonia tells them she is already in love with someone who doesn't realize how she feels. He's the only one for her. But now it's time to go. Sonia rises to say good-night. Arturo offers to walk her to the car. He goes toward the door. Sonia sits beside Eugenia and tells Eugenia she should have another child. Suddenly things get awkward. Sonia kisses Eugenia good night. Eugenia looks like she is going to cry.

A car pulls up in front of a fancy highrise. Fernando helps Isabel out. Inside, he tells her to close her eyes and take off her shoes. "I want you to feel the texture with your feet." He opens the door. "Walk. Another step. Keep your eyes closed." Isabel ooohhs at the feeling under her feet. He tells her to stop, then pushes a button. Music fills the room. It's her favorite song.

"Open your eyes." There are several boquets of roses. Rose petals and candles make a path on the floor. Isabel is overwhelmed. "I love you." She looks out at the candle-lined balcony. They kiss. They slow dance. "I don't know how I'm going to pay you back for all this love." Oh, Honey. It's on your Visa card. And you are going to pay it back. With interest.

Eugenia asks Arturo about the party. There were only 3 or 4 people here. Don't you miss your father, your family? "You are the center of my happiness." "But you left your father and your family for me." "You and Aranza are my family. And your cousin and Lucha and Gabina." He nuzzles her neck and hair. "I'm happy. You are the perfect woman. Better than any of my fantasies. I am crazy about you." Eugenia leans against him. They sigh blissfully. The vultures are circling.

Morning. Time for school. Eugenia asks Aranza about her homework. She finished it in the afternoon. She doesn't like doing homework at night. In the kitchen the maid asks Aranza what she wants for breakfast. A quesadilla. The maid announces, "I'll make a quesadilla for my girl!" Eugenia asks what else is cooking. Scrambled eggs. Beans. The maid lifts her spatula with a florish and announces "A quesadilla for my girl!" as she puts it on the plate. Wow. Play-by-play announcements on the food. They don't do that on Master Chef.

Isabel and Gaby arrive at CasaArte, "Decoration and Design". So that's what the party was for! I notice we have some Home Depot product placement here, but it's been pixelated. I guess that's a good idea. Why go to a fancy design studio with a security guard at the door if you can shoplift buy the same thing at Home Depot?

Fernando has sent Isabel a lovely boquet of yellow roses. Her co-workers are gushing over them. Isabel is so lucky to have a great guy who send flowers and gives her surprises like this. Isabel flashes her ring at her co-workers. What a guy! Honestly if I were her I'd check to see if the band was leaving a green ring around my finger.

Andrea is carrying her toddler while walking her son to school. He asks, "Why isn't dad here?" Andrea tells him that his dad is busy, he's working. "Does he have a phone so we could talk to him?"
"No. He's trying to raise money so we can have our own house."
"If I eat less, we'd have more money."
Honestly, this is killing me. Such cute kids. They don't deserve a schmuck like Fernando for a father. Andrea tells her son he has to eat to be big and strong like his dad. They go on their way to school.

Isabel wants to know why Gaby doesn't like Fernando. Gaby makes a snarky remark about Fernando's honesty. Isabel gets angry and storms out into the hall. Gaby follows her and tells Isabel, "We're more than friends. We're like sisters. I don't think Fernando is honest."
"I'm happy. I ask you to respect my relationship."

A co-worker approaches. She has a bill from the factory that Isabel needs to sign. The two continue their talk. Gaby says, "We don't know where Fernando works, what he does for a living or where he gets all the money he spends."

"He negotiates with clients. He is doing well. I feel like I don't deserve everything he gives me. I am looking forward to having him as the father of my children. I can hardly wait to become a mother." "It will happen." They hug.

Grandma Meanie unwraps a bandage from her leg. She mutters how the pain in her leg will spread to her back. She prays. There's a knock at the door. She hastily rewraps the bandage and hobbles to the door. It's her neighbor Agatha. "I brought sweet bread. Can I make you some coffee?" "I thought it was Andrea back with those kids." Grandma Meanie starts on a rant about her daughter. Agatha tells her it's hard to be alone with kids. She asks, "Don't you love your Grandsons?"
"No. I don't love them at all."

Arturo eats breakfast and tells Eugenia about the new construction on the bridge his company is building. Eugenia is hanging on his every word as if all this talk about an overpass is the most fascinating thing she's ever heard. "Soon we will see cars driving over both levels." "No", she says. "We can get a convertible and drive over the bridge together." They talk happily as they walk to the door. Lucha and Gabina smile. "It's a blessing from God to be in a house where they are so happy and so much in love." They sigh, smile and hug each other.

Gaby is going over the business's receipts. It seems the business has less money in the bank than they thought. Isabel believes it's because of the Grand Opening party. Don't worry, it's temporary. We'll make it all back very soon. They laugh.

Mauricio storms into the room. Mauricio asks Isabel if she has any receipts that she has neglected to give him. Before she can answer she has to take a call from a new client who wants her home remodeled. Isabel leaves to take the call. She'll be back to talk to Mauricio. Gaby asks, "What's wrong?"
"I'm afraid Isabel's accounts are nearly empty. Her personal accounts. Large amounts are missing."
Gaby thinks it's Isabel's good-for-nothing husband.

"It looks like embezzlement. This is very serious."
Isabel enters the room. "What Mauricio? What's this about?" They all stare at each other.

Corazon Indomable, Episode #147, Monday, December 2, 2013: La Dama Desnuda!!! Or Where the Heck is Oblivio?!!

Recap By LatinainMD

Note:  Some scenes are combined.

A crowd is gathered in front of Alfie’s new “nude” portrait of Maricruz.  His mad-genius friend comes closer and thought bubbles that it’s the best thing Alfie has ever painted.  That’s not saying much.

It’s another slow news day in Mexico City, so the new portrait is once again front-page news.  Clem reads the news and is shocked….not only at her son’s madness but also at the madness of the critics, who think the portrait has merit…..Alfie’s future mom-in-law Celia calls Clem and informs her of the social nuclear fallout caused by Alfie’s scandalous new portrait.  Naturally, the wedding is off.

Maricruz despairs as she searches in vain for a job in the newspaper’s want ads.  Juanita notes it is yesterday’s newspaper and offers to go buy a new one.  As she leaves, MC thought bubbles that she can’t continue sacrificing Juanita for her sake; it’s time for Juanita to find herself a new job too.

Lo Que La Vida Me Robó #10 Lunes 12/2/13: Presumption and Delusion

Chapter 10: Presumption and Delusion

In view of how these events are unfolding, I now speak in the voice of Edith Wharton.

In Review

We are reminded that Master Dimwit has lost a significant sum at cards and we witness his shame.  Surely the gods then compensate with another view of the initial kiss between Lady Monserrat and Lord Alejandro, which leaves Lady Monserrat wide-eyed. Unknown to them, Refugio watches from a vantage point at the other side of the garden.

Current Happenings:

Garden: Lord Alejandro* is concerned at the impact this has on her. He explains that he has been fascinated with her from the first moment he saw her near the shore on the occasion of their first encounter. He then attempts to assure her that he is unchanged despite the change in his circumstances. Before Lady Monserrat is able to explain that her feelings are not the same as his, Countess Graceless enters and interrupts by inviting His Lordship to stay for a dessert repast. He declines graciously, Lady Monserrat saying that he has important matters to settle. Countess Graceless then attempts to extract a promise to visit them on the morrow, but he wavers, then accepts, and departs. When he is beyond their hearing, Countess Graceless speaks of his attributes to her daughter. They return inside and she continues her attempt at coercing Lady Monserrat to conquer the heart [and yes, the hormones] of Lord Alejandro. Lady Monserrat, however, is not of a mind to do this. She refuses to be a sacrificial lamb to the family's financial problems. At the last she tells her mother she will do no more of what she demands, states the matter is concluded, and departs for her chamber. Countess Graceless, however, does not appear daunted by this.

Note to my beloved bloggers: please read

Hey friends,
Sorry I've been absent. Actually the tv situation in my house is so bad I don't know how to watch tv any more (my son upgraded it beyond my technical understanding) so I haven't seen a novela in months. There are so many of you now! Here are my two requests:

1. Please put the actual name of the show you're recapping in the title. Many people do not know them by the initials and you will not be found in a search.

2. PLEASE input your posts using notepad or other plain text editor. Some of the posts have been so full of coding that it breaks the blog design for some people. If you must input in Word etc. here is a workaround: after you cut-and-paste the document into the compose window, then cut-and-paste it again and put it into the html window. That way all the coding will go away.

Thanks,
Jane (melinama, blog mom, chapel hill fiddler - google has taken away my pseudonyms!)

Lo Que La Vida Me Robo #9- 11/29/13: Tantita Pena (She Suffers)

Ahoy, Amigis! The title of this recap is taken from a song by Alejandro Fernandez. Please enjoy the link Tantita Pena

Gracie sends Dimwit to Ale's to make sure he shows up at Pedro's shinding. Make something up if he isn't wanting to go Gracie opines. Speaking of Gracie we are opening a new table on the Patio called, "The Tasteful Fashion Police". Cap'n Sylvia and Doris are the first ones there ; ) We will be critiquing Gracie's unfortunate taste in clothes, but especially the shoes. Speaking of shoes here is another link for your listening pleasure In These Shoes

Pedro's Shinding:
As Nadia, Pedro's wife, plays the "Moonlight Sonata", Gracie and Lottie are in the corner talking about her piano playing. Lottie thinks she's good Gracie, meh, not so much. Speaking of Gracie, did she just roll out of bed, she looks like she's got the "Bed Head". Product suggestions anyone? Seems Pedro likes showing Nadia off, but he's nowhere in sight, he's talking politics in his office with who knows who according to Gracie. Lottie remarks how Ale just walked in and he is devouring Monse with his eyes. Oh, la la, say oooo la, la Y'all! There are some smoldering looks between Monse and Ale. Monse is moving toward Ale and Lottie thinks this is a bad idea. She should let Ale come to her. Gracie is all for Monse taking the lead. Monse greets Ale and the look between them a little flirtatious a bit shy, and says she'd like to talk to him, but not there. She takes his hand and he clutches her hand and off they go. Gracie is over the moon thinking Lottie gave Monse some good advice.
