La Tempestad, October 21, 2013. Capitulo 61.

Estercita tells Hernan that DamFab wants to take her son away from her and get a divorce. He has given her 2 days. Hernan forbids Estercita to give DamFab a divorce. Do what you have to do to stall it. Estercita complains that she has no money. Where's the money for the kidnapping of my son? I haven’t seen a penny yet (this woman wins mom of the year. NOT!). Hernan tells her that she will not have to worry about money since she is the heir of Ernesto's fortune. He will take care of getting it to her. She promises to give him a big bonus if he gets it quickly. He tells her he will keep her informed. After he hangs up, he calls her stupid. To think that I will let you see one penny of Ernesto's money. I am going to stay with it all.

Ursullied is lying on Hernan's bed with the twins. (I’m not taking about babies here). Hernan tells her to get to ready to head back home. Estercita is managing things badly. She complains that he hasn't spent any time with her, not even taken her out for dinner. Hernan tells her to listen to him. She refuses to do his bidding and they start fighting and he pushes her on the bed. You listen to me replies Hernan.

DamFab and Marina are on the phone talking. She can't believe that Estercita didn't put up a fight regarding the divorce that DamFab asked for. He assures her that he will fix things quickly so that they can be together. She needs to stay calm. Soon they will be together and no one will bother them. (only if you get rid of crazy Hernan, sweetcheeks). Every time he thinks of her his heart beats crazily like a “Tempestad”. She asks about Padre Tomas. He is getting better and better. She asks him to tell Padre hello for her. He asks her how she's doing. Fine replies Marina. She tells him that she will be dining tonight with.....but DamFab's phone loses power and she can't tell him who's she's dining with. Becky enters Marina's room to inform her that Hernan has arrived to take her to dinner. Marina tells Becky that she doesn't want to go, but she'll do it anyway.

PEAM #160, Oct. 21, 2013 - Oh Say Can You See…the Pie Carts Up That Hill Aimed at Baby Sellers and Baby Thieves

Here is an experiment:

Aida tells Jesica who is down stairs waiting for her.  She says oh no he will kill him (Cardy I presume) just then Cardy takes a flying lesson Jesús assumes another rescue role that of working wonders of conciliation between madman Bernabe and red-faced Cardy.  The girls ooh and aah and Jesica takes a flower vase in hand to face the musinc. Bernabe swings her around but lets her back to admire her physique as we all always do.

Xochi and Fernando take the new car for a spin.  Apparently she has never driven before so this won't go well as she ruins some poor slubs knees who has the good judgement to run for his life. Xochi is more worried about damage to the new MiniCooper than to the involuntary manslaughter charges that might await her future driving attempts.

Jesica assures Cardy that she will handle Bernabe. Then she assures Bernabe that even though she is totally in lurve with Cardy he is so wonderful to her.  They hug and dance in the coffee room moving the dance out into the open office.  Bernabe waxes between ecstatic dancer and wild man ready to defend his old girlfriend if Cardy ever does anything bad to her.

TELEMUNDO Y MAS - week of October 21

The Telemundo schedule seems to be patas arriba but that won't stop us from commenting! Go for it!

Recapper stars in her own telenovela!

¿Qué es Common Core?

Carlos and Belinda are a young couple with children in the Mesa Public Schools.  As MPS implements the new Common Core standards, Miss Millie helps Carlos and Belinda understand the changes.  But a secret from Carlos' past threatens the safety of the entire family.

This was just too good not to share with the whole community!  I shot this video series back in May and the Spanish version is out now.  There was an English version shot at the same time, but it doesn't look like that's out yet.  The idea is to introduce parents to the Common Core Standards and get them interested in what's going on in MPS by using the familiar telenovela format, as well as poking fun at a lot of the telenovela tropes (all that stuff we check off on the imaginary BINGO cards).  I even got to say "No puede ser!"  It's not meant to be a stand-alone, but is/has been presented to parents during meetings where they have an opportunity to ask questions and get more detailed information.

CI, # 114 -- Fri. 10/18/13 -- Don’t Know Where the Vengeance Went, but Now It’s All About Luurve

CeCe is on leave for tonight’s recap due to exams, so La Paloma is reporting instead. Many scenes are compressed and combined by topic, so they may be out of order.

It’s another night of back-and-forth emotions for Tav and MC. Their attempts to find new partners leave them back at square one, feeling the old feelings. Details of this mess follow.

Previously
Tav protests to Miguel that MC isn’t just playing around with a new boyfriend, she has to think of a stepfather for Lupi. Mig thinks the engineer has a good salary, but Tav says MC won’t lack for anything as long as he’s around. It’s seems like a lie—MC’ love for Tav won’t allow her to date anyone new. (That’s some sublime self-satisfaction for our galan.)

MC and Alvaro are out riding. He cheers her up and she trusts him, but does wonder why he is helping her. Shortly, the new couple is at her table, drinking coffee, chatting and laughing. Tav rings the doorbell, Santa answers and tells him to wait. Tav sees the happy couple and knows Miguel wasn’t lying about MC’ new boyfriend. Nevertheless, he’ll protect his daughter.

In a moment, MC welcomes Tav and introduces Alvaro. The men grip each other’s hand in a contest of manly power.  (Sergio Goyri seems to have more focus when he’s menacing someone as a bad guy. He’s sort of a cardboard cutout here.)

Tav Rides By to See Whose Truck Is Parked at MariCruz’ Hacienda
Tav claims he came to see Lupita. MC gestures him upstairs on his own, while she and Alvaro sit on the couch for more cozy conversation. Tav eavesdrops from the upstairs bridge. When the engineer leaves, MC lets him kiss her hand. She rips Tav for coming unannounced and with a rotten attitude.

Mentir Para Vivir #10 Fri 10/18/13 New-Nes Confesses; Ric Eyes the Possible Male Competition; Padre Plaid Prays for Guidance

Capítulo 10

Lo Del Pasado:
At the hospital Oriana breaks down and confesses the real story to Padre Mariano.  She was looking for shelter from her deceitful, scruple-less, and criminal hubby and the misguided long arm of the Columbian law; not to mention that she only meant to bring a bit of happiness into the old lady’s lonely life.  He advises her against telling the truth to Doña Paloma for fear the emotional shock of True-nes’s washing up on the shore like a dead tuna post-deadly overdose would be too much for her.

Lo Del Nuevo:

While Padre Plaid (having actually changed into a red stripy something now) is chatting with New-nes, Cesar and Racquel show up in the waiting area to check on things.  Ric sees another opportunity to snooker information about NewNes’s past and any possible link to his dead daddy’s murder.   He immediately starts giving Raqi the third degree.  (Word up, Ric: don’t try snookering a snookerer.)  Raqi’s way ahead of him here.  Nope, she’s got no idea what Padre Red Stripes and Ines discussed that morning that supposedly set her off since they’re really not friends as such; and nope, she’s not aware of any long distance phone calls to her hotel—except (once he mentions that he paid the last phone bill for Ines) the time she was calling about some little cheap stuff she left in the room and a hairbrush which they’d given to Santos for the DNA test.  “—it turned out positive, didn’t it?”  Yeah it was positive, he replies, still mentally sifting her answer for a crack in her alibi.    So then what’s your problem, asks Raqi with another sparkling crocodile smile of hers.  (Chomp!)

La Tempestad, Capitulo 60, Friday, October 18, 2013: Exclusive! Baby Michel Tells His Story: Life with Papi.

First of all, don't feel sorry for me.  I know my mami is just using me to get at my papi.  She's hanging out with her Mean Girl cousin and that creepy dude Hernán, not to mention the freak with the bad rug and the painted eyebrows.  But you have to know that my papi is on my side.

We're not exactly living at the Ritz.  Papi rented us a rooftop room after we got kicked out of the pensión. (My crying kept the other lodgers awake at night.  What did they want from me?  I'm a friggin' baby.) It's raining really hard outside.  Papi has buckets set out to catch the water that pours in through the holes in the ceiling and the windows.  It's chilly in here.  Papi bundles me up and snuggles me.  He gives me my bottle.

UPDATE FROM R-LAY-DEE…….
Padre Tomás is not expected to survive the night.  His lungs are failing.  I repeat, he may not live through the night.  When questioned on the whereabouts of her daughter-in-law, ShutUpRosy reported that she is where she belongs -- in the house, doing the laundry.

Oh man.  I don't feel so good.  Papi!  Wah!  He hears me!  He comes and feels my forehead and says I'm burning with fever.  He gathers me up in my bunting, covers me with his own leather jacket and hustles me outside to find a doctor.  A nice lady in the street points him to the Red Cross Hospital.  Papi -- watch out for the traffic or you'll get us both killed!

The nurse in the Cruz Roja comes running when Papi calls for help.  [I'm only a baby but even I know that Papi makes people want to help him -- well except for that creepy Hernán dude.  Note to self:  watch and learn.]  They take me into the back and Papi goes to the chapel and asks the Virgen Morena to save me.

Weekend Discussion: Virtual Feast

Virtual Feast

Food, whether we're talking basic, ethnic, plain, or fancy, is what keeps us going. We see beautiful kitchens in the homes of our fictional friends on TV: Big kitchen tables are laden with gorgeous produce, garlic is hanging over the counter space, spice shelves are loaded with jars, and wonder what Maria, the cook, is preparing for our protagonists. I keep wishing that Televisa would put out a cookbook with the recipes from each series.

Every once in a while we need to talk about this universally-loved subject. Do you like to cook? Do you tend to cook for parties, family, a special significant other? Do you like to experiment?

As we get closer to the finale of PEAM, there will probably be parties in front of the TV. What are you planning to make? If you're not entertaining, what would you make if we all got together?

I freely admit I make stuff that some people think are real head-scratchers. Here is a dessert I've brought to a friend's place for Easter; I even made it with sugar-free filling!:

Now with fall in full swing and winter coming, what do you like to cook?  How did you learn?  If you have children, did you teach them?

Seriously, I have only ever known about three people who didn't like food.  They all had other major issues.

La Tempestad, Capitulo 59, Thursday October 17, 2013 - Todos Los Padres

The Father of the Pueblo – Father Tomas

Father Tomas is driving down the road to attend to a certain Doña Rita when his car swerves off the road and down a short precipice. It appears to be a mechanical failure—we know that Nareo did something to the car. After the accident, the Father is bleeding and unconscious but he is pulled from the burning car by some townspeople. The car blows up. Nareo did his job well but the Father is not dead yet.

At the hospital, the doctor tells ShutupRosy, Laz and Lucia some bad news. Sadly, Padre inhaled some burning fumes and has some bourns on his body. He is on a respirator fighting between and life and death.

Damian Fabre, Father At Large

Damian jumps out of the cab driven by sinister Macario and runs through traffic to the church in order to recover his bebe. He enters the church where we see Sweet Baby looking so cute lying on his clean blanket in a pew. Damian swoops the baby up into his manly, muscular arms. Damian has never been more beautiful than when he holds the little one who may or may not be his son.

Damian then takes the flowers out of a vase right in the front of the church and fills it with a large black plastic garbage bag full of money. Ursula is skulking somewhere in the church, hiding from Damian. Damian hears her and she is almost caught whilst she is waiting for Damian to fill the vase with money. She sheds a few tears but I cannot for the life of me tell just why she would bother.

We jump to the Den of Iniquity, where Hernan, Macario and Ursula rub their hands together in glee as Hernan shares out the money they extorted from Damian/Mercedes. Ursula exults, Damian fell into their trap!

Mentir Para Vivir #9 Thu 10/17/13 Preguntar para Angustiar

Ricardo explains to Inés about Maria, at least as far as he knows.  Maria has epilepsy and some type of mental retardation.  Inés doesn't like the idea of leaving Maria with her dad, but Ricardo doesn't want to have her institutionalized.

Paloma fills Padre Plaid in on what Inés told him about Lina's father.  He thinks she might talk to a man of the cloth…tartan though it may be.  Paloma wants her to be happy and she feels guilty about what Inés has suffered.

Inés is wondering why Ricardo told her about Maria.  'Cause he likes you, duh!  He pleads for her to realize their kiss was for realz, but Inés denies it.  Ricardo tells her that he wanted her to know about Maria because he wants her to trust him.  Inés gets defensive and says he's just trying to get her to admit she's someone else, like maybe the woman who killed his father.  She starts to leave, but Ricardo won't let her and insists that if they can't get it on, at least they can be friends.  He figures she never had a lot of friends before, growing up as an orphan.  He tries to coax her to tell him about her life of ho-ing by saying he did his own stupid stuff, as she's now seen, but Inés can't be forthcoming about that since she has no idea that's supposed to be her past.  Raquel and Whatsisface (Matilde's husband) come in to the same restaurant where Inés is with Ricardo and start chatting about the lovely house they saw that would be just perfect for the new boutique hotel.

CI # 113 -- Thurs. 10/17/13 -- Tonight’s Melodrama: MariCruz, the Plucky Rancherita

Allà en el rancho grande,
Allà donde vivia,
Habia una rancherita
Que alegre me decia,
Que alegre me decia.

Previously
MariCruz is speaking with the smitten Mayor Morales, telling him she will fight the land takeover and plans to file a class action lawsuit.  He won’t intervene because he admires her.  When he tries kissing her hand, she pulls it away and leaves.  Although she’s beautiful and smart, he smirks and tells himself that everything has its price. (Dream on, slimeball. If the Emir couldn’t pull it off, neither can you.)

Alvaro, the engineer (aka Old Caterpillar Face), confesses to Padre Julian he has a personal motive in his sympathy for the displaced peasants. He’s in love with MariCruz and hopes the padre will speak in his behalf. He’s an upright guy who can provide references if needed. (If you need that much help, your case may be hopeless.)

Miguel uses his vast knowledge of women to advise Octavio that Simona knows he loves MC more than his wife.  (We’re surprised he’s not working on a best seller to share his expertise.)

Our Plucky (but Unlucky) Heroine Fights to Save the Ranch
The hardworking accountant tells Santa he really, really needs to see MC, but she’s never home.  He hopes the tenants will help her save the ranch and let her know how badly JA has cheated and betrayed her. She doesn’t deserve her bad luck.

The old:
We are the casino and Ricardo; the loser comes in with Virginia.  He goes to a table where the minimum bet is $10,000 pesos.  He is going to bet blindly. What an idiot.
Alma, Jesus and Ferny arrive at the hospital to see Paty.  Rogelio arrives and is informed that she is in critical condition.

Back at the casino, Ricardo bets it all.  So do his opponents.  I don’t understand Poker, but Ricardo wins everything. Dumb luck!

Mentir Para Vivir #8 Wed 10/16/13 Sebastian gets busy throwing dogs (you have to read the whole thing to understand)

Ricardo asks Sebas what he'll do with his shares – is he planning to sell them?  SabeNada doesn't know.  With his share of the sale of the house plus his mother's trust fund, oof, what a life he'll have!  Ricardo warns him to consider this money won't last forever (buzzkill).  SabeNada wonders sarcastically if Ricardo wants him to invest in the factory. Ricardo suggests he would make a good profit if he did.  SabeNada tells him if it were anyone else, he might, but since it's Ricardo, well, no – ain't gonna do it.  Ricardo tries to speak calmly with him.  It really doesn't matter to him if he invests in the company.  But he does want to know why SabeNada dislikes him so much.  Sabe responds that Ricardo has been bossing him around all his life, trying to run his life in order to turn him into a puppet (monigote).  Ricardo tries to explain he's never.....but SabeNada refuses to listen to the same old song (cantaleta).  Ricardo was always the favorite son.  If his mother left everything to Ricardo and he got stuck with a miserable trust (fideicomiso) it must've been because Ricardo nagged and nagged her to leave everything to him (Ricardo).  Ricardo assures him he did no such thing.  He sincerely (de corazon) apologizes if he was too strict with him or if he made any mistakes.  Too late, says SabeNada.  Ricardo continues to reach out, saying he would like nothing more if they could talk as friends.  He'd like to hear about his projects, his friends, his girlfriends.  SabeNada tells him he has no interest in sharing anything with him because he could care less about his opinion.  And one more thing, he wants a car.  He's tired of walking or taking taxis.  He had to sell his car to survive when Ricardo cut off his allowance.  Ricardo stupidly, IMHO, says he'll speak to the accountant and have him assign a car designated for the executives at the firm.  Oh heck no, SabeNada doesn't want one of those carcachas (old crock/jalopy).  He stalks off and Ricardo can only shake his head.

PEAM #157- 10/16/13: For A Good Time (And Trouble With Your Spouse), Call Alicia!

Recap By Pablo

This episode sponsored by cheap POLLO LOCO (yes, that's what Martha eats)!

Mimic

When Vicky enters AVON's headquarters  time stops. She looks like she works there, she is wearing a dress probably made with the leftover material from the secretaries uniforms. She walks with pride looking at everybody over her shoulder. I have seen bigger towers fall down, she better have a plan ''B'' for when Ricardo a) runs out of money, or b) kicks her out.

Ya lo lamió el diablo

Now that Ricardo has money to burn, Marisela and Virginia, or Virgin-not, as Mari calls her, fight over him. One because she only wants to spend a good time swimming in luxury and expensive gifts, and the other one because she wants the best for him, and the best is not Virgin-not, that's for sure. With Elías out of the picture, Marisela is left without good suitors, and Ricardo left her like the dog with the two sandwiches, without Juan and without the chickens... Marisela annoyingly cries trying to make us believe it is because she suffers seeing Ricardo losing all his money in seconds, but the reality is that she cries because she wants to be with him, instead of Vicky. Then she could be crying too, but with happiness, because money and status is what she had always longed.
In a very over dramatic moment, Marisela asks Vicky if she has slept with Ricardo...
-Yes!
-Nooooooo!! Inga' su!

 The bling ring

Patricia's ring's shine hits like lightning deep inside Verónica's heart causing a huge dose of pain. Ahem, envy. Like in the movie, if you wear it, you could die within a week. Guaranteed!

At the same time, Mr. Mining Company Big Shot tells Vargas that he absolutely refuses to throw all those people off the Narvaez land, let alone the woman he loves and who is certain will eventually fall in love with him. (As Hubby has always said, even the homeliest hombre thinks he’s a ripped Romeo.  This guy’s no exception.)  Big Shot’s job is on the line this time, but he’s not going to be the one responsible for evicting all those people, and especially not MC.  (How many men has Maricruz got drooling and madly in love with her by now, anyway?)

PEAM, Tuesday 10/15/13 (#156): The Little Bird and the Lucky Duck

There is a sign on the wall in the courtroom: "SILENCIO." I only mention it because I don't think any of these characters read it.

In court, on the witness stand, Rogelio testifies that Vero began mistreating Valentina a few months ago. One morning she tried to hit her, but Rog prevented it. However, yesterday was worst of all. She hit Valentina and locked her up in her room without supper. (Does that make Rogelio a stool pigeon?)

Vero flips out and physically takes a swipe at Rogelio, at the same time denying that she ever hit Valentina. The judge calls an end to the session and says she'll talk to Valentina herself. "Great!" Vero snarls. "Let her tell you how much I love her."

After the judge leaves, Vero accuses Chucho of trying to take Valentina away from her. He says that's not what he's trying to do. I think Vero says that Valentina lies and/or exaggerates to get his sympathy. She also says Rogelio lied to get her in trouble.

"Don't you know how my princess is suffering?" Chucho asks. "I don't think you care. She's told me for months about your bad moods and mistreatment. What would you have me do? Just sit and watch it happen? I think not."

Vero threatens Rogelio again with that long-ago recording from Nick Donovan's hotel room. He replies, "Do what you want. I'm tired of your threats."

Vero tells Cinthia they will all pay. Cinthia too! "If I lose Valentina, I will tear you to shreds, you incompetent idiot!"

Mentir Para Vivir #6 Mon 10/14/13 While some have to settle into their new lives, others don’t know how to get rid of their old ones…

Villa el Descanso Eterno
It’s night time in San Carlos and Lucina and Raquel invited the guy who helped them fake Oriana’s passport for another round of Forgers Anonymous. He believes Real Ines’ fingerprints were used for Fake Ines’ new passport. But he doesn’t think the driver’s license prints will be checked for a match with the ones in the passport. Get it? Good.
Raquel and Lucina agree with him, but that Oriana is such a paranoid, she should just make a fake driver’s license and relax.
And talking about Ori, has Lucina asked her if the new family knows Ricardo Sanchez Bretton? Raquel inquires.

Casa Madrina/Abuela
While Alina is asleep, Oriana is trying to learn how to write her new signature, for when she has to fake-sign her new credit cards… Lucina calls just then to let her know the fingerprints from the passport belong to Ines.
So, what do I do with the driver’s license? Ori asks in a panic.
Make up something, what else? Lucina offers a very good suggestion (not really); but her shrug informs Viewerville that what she really means to say is: “Do I have to do all the illicit work for you?”
Oriana complains about the mess they got her into, but Lucina would like a thank you, instead, for helping her stay out of jail. Before they begin to fight, Raquel asks for the phone just to tell Oriana the exact same thing as Lucina did and to urge her to use her smarts to solve the problem. Oh, and by the way, does your new family know Ricardo? Raquel remembers to ask.
Oh, yes, Oriana replies, and that’s another problem, he’s Paloma’s godson and he’s always here, nosing around, taking me to walks around the city and gazing at me lovingly – ok, I might’ve made up the gazing part, but Viewerville can pretend I didn’t, because Raquel’s reply works best with my imagination: she warns her best friend to stay away from Ricardo because he is HER man and if Ori crosses the line with him, she (Raquel) might spill the beans, reveal the whole truth.
Ori threatens to do it first and hangs up, hurrying to Alina, who’s talking in her sleep or something… And here is how the besties become rivals…Just give it time!

Corazon Indomable, Episode #110, Monday, October 14, 2013 “The Beginning of the End for Short-Lived Rancho El Abuelo”

Recap by LatinInMD

Simona is still sharing her headache with us, so Octavio does himself (and all of Viewerville) a favor and prepares to put her to sleep with an injection.

MC visits police chief Vargas to inquire about the investigation concerning her rustled cattle.  Sensing – correctly – that Vargas is not giving it much thought because he figures the loss is a small drop in the bucket for her (and just in case we forgot what the narrator told us only five episodes ago), MC gives Vargas and Viewerville a quick tutorial – illustrated with sepia flashbacks – on how she managed to blow her father’s entire fortune in record time.  She’s done nothing but give without getting anything in return, she points out.  Now you understand my situation, she asks Vargas?  He’s speechless – as is the rest of Viewerville, knowing how ludicrous all this still sounds.

After putting Simona to sleep, Octavio comes down to the living room to continue his endless exchanges with Miguel about how it upsets Simona to have Octavio visit MC.  Miguel insists that Octavio and Simona should take a trip far, far away.

Simona awakens from her drug-induced nap just as Ofelia enters her room.  She asks the maid who replaced her long-serving nana to prepare a bath for her, so she can make herself pretty.  (Good luck with that.)  (By the way, what happened to nana?  My guess is she had too many brain cells to continue on this show.)

La Tempestad, October 14, 2013. Capitulo 56. She's Alive! She's Alive!

Mercedes tells Bea that it's time to tell Marina the truth. Hernan has now found out.

Hernan wants to know why Fully was interrogated by the Feds. Nothing to do with the organization replies Fully. It's regarding the dead Fed. Hernan just wanted to make sure that Fully didn't say anything stupid. Fully snickers and changes the subject. He wants to know what Hernan's intentions are with Ursula. Why do you care, asks Hernan. I didn't think you cared about anyone, but yourself. Fully gets annoyed and tells Hernan that no one messes with this family. Sooner or later, this association of ours will finish. And I will have the pleasure of no longer putting up with your weird temperament. Ursula listens in when Hernan tells Fully that he would be the first to celebrate the end of their association. Ursula wants to know what is up with Fully and Hernan.

Mercedes thinks it better to tell Marina now, before she finds out from someone else. Bea finally agrees but begs her to find the right time to tell her. She doesn't have a long time to live and doesn't want to see Marina suffer.

Bea goes to see her Dr. Suspenders. She wants to know how much longer she has to live.

Marina is praising DamFine for bringing in more then enough fish to share with the poor. Hernan strolls up and tells DamAnnoyed that he is the talk of the town. I ask that next time you don't give away the fish. DamAnnoyed reminds him that he met his obligation to the pacadora. Isn't the fact that the freezer is full the most important? So what's the problem? That you used the fish that belonged to the pacadora replies Hernan. It was mine replies DamFine. “La Tempestad” works for the pacadora says Hernan. So I'm going to have to take it from your pay. If you read the contract it clearly states that all the fish belongs to the pacadora. Is that true DamFine asks Marina. Yes, it's true replies Marina. She tells Hernan what DamFine did was noble. And since he is going to take it out of DamFine's pay, you might as well take half from me too. I am completely in agreement with what DamFine did. DamFine tells Marina that it isn't necessary. Marina says that it's not a problem. It has to do with people needing it. Hernan agrees to take it out of both their pays. We are not in a good position to give away fish.

PEAM #155 - 10/14/2013 - The Magic Time Machine Takes Us Back or Is It Forward to Hospital and Court

Two pictures from the France photo workshop: first an Arabian mix, Lucy coming out of the Atlantic surf, and the second a PRE (pura raza española) named Rubén.  Rubén has been juried into the New Mexico photographers show to be hung in December.

Bebe Garcia appears a miracle of love as her Papa calls her.  Maricela breaks up with Ricardo who has a fatal case of tickles and cries to the whole office who weren't too busy anyway so they discuss.  Julio says let's treat him like an addict, he needs an intervention.  Veronica is very pregnant and none of the madonna serenity has perforated her cranky snarling face. Jesús gets to announce in tongue tied bursts of joy, the arrival of another princess to Sebastian, Panfilo and Chatita.

We have the whining, crying track coming out of Maricela's pie hole when Pato gets the call from Jesús so she can torment everyone with gyrations and screams, yeah baby, yeah baby in rather faultless English. Veronica snarls something I missed.

Jesús brings a photo wrapped and framed in baby goo goo style of Alma and the baby in their first embrace. Jesús suggests they name the baby Louisa which confuses Chatita while they joke her into remembering that it is her name. Memory loss is so cute sometimes.  Jesús and Chatita profess love and joy that the new Louisa is going to have a grandmother.  Jesús then presents her with a gold saints medallion, didn't catch the saint…

Porque el Amor Manda #154: Two Time Warps & a Baby

Bebe Garcia - 7

Pato visits Alma in her bedroom and tells her the score: two up and two down for Rogelio, outcome uncertain. Alma observes that she obviously never stopped loving him and wishes her all the best. He really does seem to be changing -- he even volunteered to babysit Valentina during the custody hearing! They share a giggle over Paty's "pichon paternal."

Rico Not-So-Suave continues to act like a total tick in the restaurant. He doesn't understand why Maricela is so put off: wasn't she always crazy about money? She reminds him that she's changed: none of that matters anymore; what's important is being together. Oh yeah? Is that why you were always standing me up for that pretty-boy Elias Franco? Well, now I'm as good as him! (Guess again, twerp.)

La Tempestad#55-10/11/13: I Am A Dog Who Stays On a Scent, and Does Not Leave It. M. Hercule Poirot

Ahoy, Tempestad Maties. It is rainy and humid today, typical fall weather for my area. I dug out my Agatha Christie novels last night, and started rereading one of them and lo and behold something struck me. It's about Herny you see. In Ms Christie's last book, there is a murderer that is a Master Manipulator. He manipulates people into murdering other people without becoming involved in the actual crime. It took M. Hercule Poirot a long time to find out who was doing these crimes, as they spanned many years. I compare the Commandante to M. Poirot because he will stay with the case until it is solved. Herny is like Mr. X in the novel "Curtain" Ms Christie wrote. Herny has murdered many over the years without being caught. Will the Commandate catch the Master Manipulator? Will Herny screw up? Just some thoughts for Y'all to puzzle out!

I took notes in real time and so if I missed anything or got something wrong please comment.

It's Too Late To 'Pologize, It's Too Late : Herny swears to Pervy Ernie there is nothing going on with Hada/Ester, just some chit chat, he would so never betray ole Pervy (liar, liar, pants on fire). Hada/Ester even takes up for herself and when the Perv tries to apologize Hada/Ester isn't too happy.

The Scooby Two- Some Meet With The Commandante: Laz has taken DamSuspicious to see the Commandante and the Commandante forgives Laz for saying what's going on, but swears DamDetermined to secrecy. DamDetermined lets the Commandante know about the troubling pirates at sea, the fire at Neptune so many crimes. Well, The Commandante lets Laz and DamDetermined know that Fully and Herny are under suspicion and they have documents on them to prove all the crimes they have been involved with (there were extra copies made). The Commandante will accept DamDetermined help, but he must not compromise the investigation in any way! Now we have a true Scooby Gang!

Fri 10/11/13 Corazón Indomable cap 109 Simona Shares Her Headache

This yawner of an episode begins with a Octavio quarreling with Miguel over Miguel's incredible lack of compassion for others... Next!

Maricruz continues on her mission to run out of money as soon as possible by handing out wads of cash to the stragglers of Realengo. She thrives on being adored by the simple folk.

Maricruz Purchases A Playmate For Lupita

After handing out the last stack of bills she quarrels about it with José Antonio. He tells her,

"You're going to end up in the street and no one will even extend a hand."

"If so, it's God's will."

Miguel and Octavio are now quarreling about Maricruz and Simona... anybody care?

Maricruz is home spending her required 15 min. of quality time with Lupita as Juanita looks on. (Cute kid) She is brushing Lupita's unmanageable curly mane and searching for nits.
"Now Tell The Nice Folks How Much You Love Your Mama... Or Else..."

They discuss Lupita's new brother. Maricruz hopes that he takes after Simona.

Yikes! We join Simona in the hospital... scary. No makeup, a curious headband, and very grumpy... Yikes!

That's It, Simona, Just Head Toward The Light

She scolds Octavio for leaving her alone in the hospital. Looking as though he'd rather be anywhere else, he explains that he was needed at the ranch because of peasant unrest over their expulsion from Realengo... hey, Miguel needed him there to help protect the ranch (plus he needed to look in on Maricruz...he neglects mentioning this part).

Mentir Para Vivir #5 Fri 10/11/13 One Fractured Fairytale

Cap 5

Lo Del Pasado:

Silly-Socks de Santos, our P.I. Extraordinaire, calls Abeula Paloma with the news that he’s located Ines and daughter in Guayamas.  Oh happy day!   Paloma is headed for Guayamas the very next day and would go today if she knew where and when.

Lo Del Nuevo:

Doña Paloma calls Ricardo and invites him and Padre Mariano to dinner with the family.

Mad Mathilde and robotic hubby, Robo-Ruben, are curious to know what the dinner preparations are all about.  Why seven plates when they’re only five in the family?  Who knows, says Robo-Ruben in a mechanical monotone. [¡Quién sabe?]  Mad Hilde decides her aunt must be suffering from Alzheimer’s.  Perhaps [¡Quién sabe? = perhaps; who knows?], says Ruben perfunctorily.  (Is he bored out of his gourd, a maliable milquetoast, or just a long-suffering grouse’s spouse hoping to inherit his due after decades of marital immurement, certain that his wife’s inheriting a portion of Paloma’s prodigious pile of pesos will more than make up for a marital misfortune otherwise known as the buzzkill de Mathilde? ¡Quién sabe?)

That night on the way into dinner at his godmother’s manse, Ric mentions to Padre Plaid what a real coinkydink it is that the hotel owners just happened to have a hairbrush of Inés’s for a DNA sample.  They head inside to put on the feedbag with Paloma and family.

During dinner, Paloma informs her family of whom Ric and Mariano form a part, that she’s finally found her granddaughter, Ines and Ines’s little girl, Lina.   Tomorrow they’ll be coming to live with them from now on.  Paloma admits then to cowardice and weakness of character as her reason for not searching for them till after her husband’s death.  Madhilde screeches from the other end of the table that Tía Paloma is a doddering old fool to believe such a fairytale, especially if she thinks this woman isn’t an imposter in cahoots with that P.I. to collect big-time on her tía’s fabulous fortuna.  Ric warns her to watch her mouth, but she screeches him to stick his essentially non-familial nose out of what doesn’t concern him.

After dinner, Mariano and Ric agree that Maddie’s got a mouth on her the size of Mexico City and then some, and will make Ines’s life there a living hell if they let her.  Ric isn’t going to allow her to if he has anything to say about it.

The next day Ric, still suspicious, plans to arrive ahead of Ruben and Dona Paloma in Guayamas and heads straight for Oriana’s apartment where he plays with Alina and waits for the others to arrive.

Oriana has arrived late to work that morning due to a major traffic accident.  Mercedes introduces her to Santos, who explains he’s there on orders of her long-searching, wealthy abuela.  He proceeds to give her a sketchy idea of Ines’s personal family history and how the lady owners of Villa El Descanso handed over a hairbrush of hers for the conclusive DNA sample—just like a fairytale!  Oriana is drop-jawed and saucer-eyed impactada to learn about her supposed good luck and is apprehensive, certain somehow she’ll be found out and this fantasy will fracture, like a cracked window pane when the truth, as it undoubtedly will, comes to light.  Silly-Socks drives her back to the apartment where Ric and Abue Paloma are waiting for her.  The old lady gives her a heartfelt welcoming back into the familial fold.

Oriana/Inez, aka New-nes, tries to refuse the attempt to bring her back to the casota to live, but she’s guilted into it by Ric who explains the old woman has been looking for her for months and isn’t exactly in the best of health—or didn’t she notice; not to mention, there’s a life of luxury awaiting her there.  New-nes scornfully replies (and Viewerville notes the resultant appreciative sparkle in Ricardo’s muy attentive eye) that money has never impressed her.  Eventually 2-nes has no choice but to give in and goes along to get along.  She excuses herself and Lina to get packed.  Meanwhile Ric wonders why 2nes is so reluctant to leave with them; he asks the landlady if perhaps she has a serious boyfriend or something.  The landlady is adamant that 2nes doesn’t date and doesn’t receive visitors of any sort there.

While she’s packing up their things, Oriana makes sure that Alina didn’t accidently give them away.  At the same time, Silly-socks fills in Ric on how he got the hair for the DNA and mentions 2nes seemed close with Raquel while she stayed at Villa El Descanso.

Ric gets more info on 2nes via Sra. Mercedes when he goes to pay her the reward money.  He finds out that Ines is a model mother and employee, very well brought up and well-mannered.  Back at the apartment house he manages to get the phone bill, promising to pay it for the landlady.  He notes the phone numbers, dials, and thus confirms that most of those calls were made to Villa De Descanso. (Duhn-duhn-duhnnnn!!!!)

2nes and Lina finally arrive at the manse and 2nes meets her fractured fairytale family.  Mad-hilde fights the urge to growl and bare her fangs.  She takes her supposed new cuz through the house to her and Lina’s rooms upstairs.   Lina takes an immediate dislike to Mad-hilde.

Raquel gets word from Oriana’s old landlady that she’s moved to the abuela’s fairytale castle in Hermosillo and immediately tells Lucina the good news.  Lucina suddenly remembers that that’s where Ric, old dead Gabe’s sexy son, has his bachelor digs.  Raquel ignores Lucina’s objections and calls Oriana to give her the head’s up.  Oriana screams back at Raq about the nasty jam she and Lucina have put her in, but Raq tells her to live it up and enjoy her new life as a ricachóna [nouveau riche].  How the hell is she going to do that when she’s nothing but a bundle [manojo] of nerves, Oriana hisses back at Raq.

Raq gives Oriana the emergency 411 on Ric being dead Gabe’s son just as Ric walks out to greet her in the ornate brick pavemented area otherwise considred the driveway.  Ric approaches; Ori panics, says she’ll call Raq back and then clicks off.  Ric returns.  Two-nes mentions to Ric that she was talking to a friend from Mexico City and then excuses herself to check on Lina.  She asks the servant, Martin who’d given her the phone, a question before giving Ric another frowning glance and heading inside.  Ric gives Martin the third degree about who called whom and finds out the “unnamed” girlfriend called her at the house instead of the other way round as he was led to believe.  Ric asks what 2nes had asked him before going inside and he explains she was simply asking what Ric’s last name was.  Cara de I’m still suspicious as hell de Ricardo.

In the living room, Padre Plaid wants to discuss the inconsistencies in 2nes’s years of prostitution post age 16 when she left her mother’s friends.  It seems strange that she should be so well mannered and well-educated if she’d been living in a brothel and prostituting herself, says Padre Mariano.   When did she ever find time to absorb the finer things in life like manners, let alone a formal education?  He suggests that maybe she became somebody’s live-in protégé, and that he took the time to instruct her.  (Works for me.  Apparently it does for Dona Pal also.)   Paloma tells Mariano she’s not interested in the details of 2nes’s sordid past.  When and if her granddaughter decides to open up, then she’ll deal with it.  Until then, she’s going to respect her silence.  Ric shows up wanting to discuss the same topic.  Santos, he tells her, said the story was repeating itself.  Was she living the same lifestyle as her mother or what?

Doña Pal forbids Ric from ever subjecting her granddaughter to such vexing embarrassment by mentioning 2nes’s past to her.  She warns him never to mention a word of any of that to 2nes y punto.  Ric says he has no intention of doing anything so disagreeable; in fact he hopes to become a good friend.  Dona Paloma asks him then to take Ines out and show her the sights.  Get her feeling comfortable.  He agrees.

At the same time, back in her bedroom, after Oriana praises Lina for lying to the others there about their being from Monterrey, she gives her a lesson in the value of white lies as being the next best thing when not wanting to lie…..

Down in the living room again, Ric does tell his madrina that he suspects 2nes of hiding something.  Paloma admits she’s had a very sad, very trying life.   “—What did she do?  Kill somebody?”  “—No!  Nothing so drastic!  But, if one day she tells you, then it must be because you’ve earned it.  Neither am I about to tell you the details of my granddaughter’s past life.  That discussion is done, off limits.  However, if you don’t want to take her to see the factory or the sights in Hermosillo, it’s okay.  Ruben or Mariano or Cesar will do it instead.”  Of course he’ll do it, says Ric.  No problema.  Well, don’t try nosing around [hurgar = poke around, pick your nose, jab, provoke] in her personal life, or, she gently threatens, would you like me to tell her about Maria and Sebastian? Ric is suddenly red-faced impactado.  Cara de message received, loud and clear, Madrina! de Ricardo.

A while later, 2nes and Doña Pal take a walk in the garden together.  Ric’s going to find a suitable private school for Lina, she informs 2nes, and please let’s use “tu” and do call me Abuela, ok?  Okay, says 2nes, though it’s going to take some effort to remember. Oriana’s stomach is doing major rollercoaster rolls.  Paloma makes small talk.  “—Ricardo and Mariano have been friends since high school.  Too bad he’s a priest or I’d suggest him as husband material.”  They chuckle a bit at this.

Mad-hilde watches and listens to them from her secret perch on the balcony above.  RoboRuben calls her on it.  Maddie doesn’t like the attention her aunt’s giving 2nes, she tells him.  He says it’s normal to prefer your granddaughter to a niece.  The woman gives her a bad feeling [dar mala espina], she says.  RoboRuben doesn’t see why it should since she’s attractive and a decent sort.  “--If she is soooooo decent, then who’s the father of that child of hers?”  Ruben tsks at his wife’s endearing personality. “—Mathilde!”  (Does this man have the patience of Job, a steely constitution, WD40 for blood, or what?  Inquiring minds want need to know!)

Down below, Abue Pal tells 2nes that tomorrow she’s got a famous couturier coming with a full line of clothes for her to choose from.  She’s her granddaughter and very shortly all of Society will know this.  She’s got to dress appropriately, right?  Anyway, she realizes that 2nes has lived a sad life but, she adds quickly, it’s not her fault.  Abuela Pal admits it’s her own, and says it’s because she was so frightened of going against her husband.  That’s why she didn’t look for 2nes sooner.  (Viewerville notes Oriana and Paloma have something in common when it comes to Abusive Husband Syndrome. It takes various forms, but in the end is all the same sort of social malady.) “—From now on, though, you’re going to live the life you should have!  If I should die tomorrow, I’ll die happily [literally, ‘calmly’].”  “--Oh, no!  Don’t say such a thing!”   Because Oriana’s so decent, she is quickly developing affection for the old gal—and Mad-hilde is just as quickly developing a venal hatred for the ‘intruder’.  Maddie fingers her keys as the two below hug tearfully.

That evening, Abue Pal comes to 2nes’s room and offers her a new phone and two credit cards in her name.  No limit!  (How nice!)  Just then Ric calls the house and 2nes picks up.  He invites her and Lina to tour the city the next morning with him.  She starts to say no, but Paloma insists she accept since it was her idea to begin with.  2nes says all right then.

The next day, Lina and Oriana (along with Viewerville, por supuesto) get a first class history lesson and one in architecture for the period.  It’s obvious from the looks that pass between them that Ric and 2nes are more than a leetle bit interested in one another, not to mention hoping that the feeling is mutual.  (BTW, is anybody else shuddering every time they see 2nes on the grass, the mud, and the wet sand in that pretty little white sundress number she’s wearing?  Curiously, there’s not stain numero uno on her backside afterwards!)

That afternoon, 2nes finds out she’s going to be heiress to the huge factory Doña Paloma owns once she kicks the bucket, and that the next day she’s also going to be assuming the role of a manager there, under Ricardo’s tutelage!  When that doesn’t sit well and 2nes eventually suggests that though she…ahem… never studied at college, but that she’s good at um, math, Abue Pal says wonderful!!  She can be an accountant instead of a plant manager.  She can also get her driver’s licence (and I think formal training as an accountant possibly?)  Oriana realizes afterwards that that means finger printing! (In Mexico a driver’s license calls for finger prints apparently.) Ruh-roh!!  Once Abue Pal is gone, Oriana calls Lucina and frantically explains her newly developing situation and the risk involved, i.e., if she has to use her own fingers.  Loopy Lucina doesn’t see a problem.   “Oh, prints will be checked against any [current] driver’s license or those on her passport, so no problem.”  ( At least that’s what I think the conversation went like.) Oriana is desperate.  “--Well, then I’ve got to know for sure!  Find out!”

At the same time, Pierro--yeah, it’s Fabian looking like a four-eyed geek, but a beefcake of a geek all the same. ¡Ay, Chihuahua!—er… he and Ric are chatting together about 2nes’s supposed history, as far as it goes.  Since he’s not aware of the hooker aspect, that part goes untold.  They do wonder, though, what type of “friends” her mother had and what type of upbringing she must have had before she disappeared off the face of the earth at sixteen.  Ol’ four-eyed de Peer-o submits that just because there are similarities between 2nes and this Oriana, it doesn’t necessarily mean they’re one and the same.  They agree that when she disappeared it could have been with a man since she reappeared with a daughter.  Ric brings up the fact that 2nes obviously has studied somewhere and was brought up with a decent set of manners.  He mentions the lie about the phone call Martin told him about.  “--Why lie?”  Peero suggests she’s got a lover or some such.  Ric still wonders why’d she have to lie since he could care less.    Oh, says Peero, I think she’s beginning to matter to you quite a lot!  “--Anyway, there’s a DNA test and a passport that says she’s who she claims to be.”  Yeah sure, says Ric dubiously.  “--Those things can always be falsified and she could still be a fraud.”  Then Ric mentions the phone bill with all those calls to Villa de Descanso, which just happens to be the hotel where his father was murdered!!  Cara de then-that’s-a-horse-of- a-different-color de pie-eyed Peero!

Weekend Discussion: Typecasting and Its Long-Term Effects

Over the years Televisa has typecast most of our favorite actors. People with primo good looks usually get to be protagonists, some get to be villains, and the ones who hold onto their looks can do this into their forties. Average-looking people can be the friends, relatives, colleagues, and degreed professionals that surround the main characters (unless we're seeing a comedy novela), and people with very ethnic looks are usually servants or agricultural employees.

Is this art imitating or influencing life? What does this do to actors' careers and self-image? It certainly influences how we want to see them.

Mentir Para Vivir #4 Thu 10/10/13 Mentir Para Ocultar

Zeke tells Lucina that he noticed Inés' name in the guest book, so she thinks fast and tells him she didn't notice it since she must have been out of town when the guest arrived.  Zeke goes off to his room as Raquel comes in, happy to see they have another guest…until Lucina informs her that he's a PI looking for Inés Valdivia.

"Inés" is doing a great job at the store and her boss praises her way with customers.  She asks if she has a boyfriend, but Inés tells her that ain't nobody got time for that, what with work and taking care of her daughter.

Lucina and Raquel splash their feet in the pool while Raquel fusses about how nervous she is.  Zeke shows up in his version of resort wear and somehow the ladies don't expire from shock at his total absence of leg showing despite being in shorts.  Lucina goes to fix him another drink while Raquel feeds him their concocted story about Inés…and gets him to take his socks off.  She's a humanitarian, that Raquel.  Anyway, Raquel tells him that Inés was only there three days, paid in cash, went out during the day, came back in the afternoon, and then locked herself in her room.  They never talked, she never said anything about where she was from and only put "DF" in the register.  Lucina comes back with his drink as Zeke tells them that Inés is the only heir of a rich woman who hired him to find her.  Inés has no other family and was taken in by hos. Presumably with hearts of gold.  Raquel tells him Inés certainly never brought any men back to their establishment, while Lucina finds out that no, neither Zeke nor grandma has ever seen Inés in the flesh.  Lucina quickly reminds Raquel that before she left, Inés was asking about how to catch a bus to Guaymas.  Raquel follows her lead and agrees, though she has a harder time when Lucina adds that they took a picture of Inés with a young girl at "Mr. Anderson's birthday party."  Raquel looks pissed as Lucina keeps piling it on, talking about how "Raquel said" that Inés showed up with a little girl, but she sticks to Lucina's story.

C I, # 108 -- Thurs., 10/10/13 – A Tale of Two Babies (Featuring the Appearance of Saint MariCruz)

The other day, Jarifa commented “Funny how Simona and Esther are in the same boat: they both pushed marriages with men who they knew were in love with Maricruz and not them and then went on to get pregnant by those men. Esther lost her first child. Will that happen to Simona? “
In this episode, we see Ester’s baby enter this world a day later than Simona’s newborn son.  I turned to that old master of serial suspense, Charles Dickens. (His novels were originally published as serials with cliffhanger endings. Almost like telenovelas.)  His beginning to A Tale of Two Cities could well apply to us:
It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to Heaven, we were all going direct the other way. . . .  In other words, we were watching “Corazon Indomable”!
The early parts of this episode switch back and forth between Simona and Ester at a quick and choppy pace, so these segments are blended and condensed.
Seen Previously
JA rushes into the hacienda, pooh-poohing Ester’s complaints of pain. MC tells him he must go for the doctor, using the truck.  She’ll saddle up and ride to Ester’s aid in the meantime.
Simona asks Tav who does the baby look like? She wants him to stay with her. In fact, she hopes he is here every time she wakes up.
