Imperio de mentiras, #57, Wednesday, 12/16/20 The hidden and the unhinged

Just some bullet points this time, I'm typing the recap as I'm watching (and then putting scenes together, with a little bit of snark on the side).

Adriana gives up on Mario’s friendship because of JLow’s sick control over her. And then screams at him that he can't control her life. Yeah...

The happy Fabrapoodle family are waiting on the DNA results. Fab thinks Fer is a worthless whore (his exact words basically), he’s going to fight for Juanito if he's his son.

Imperio de Mentiras 56, 12/14/20: Upping The Anti As The Bad News Bears Come Knocking

Leonardo and Elisa are stuck at the roadblock being checked by the officer in charge. "My wife doesn't need an ambulance; she has a headache because she doesn't have the medicine I left at the hotel.  We just need to get that."  Finally, we've got a cop who can relate to spousal guilt trips;  he relents and lets them pull out of the roadblock.  Lucky for Leo and El (and the telenovela gods) that in this little corner of the alternate universe Mexico's police use walkie-talkies still instead of slick cell phones or laptops with Instagram and twitter-sharing options in their cop cars......

Back at Grupo Cantu, Renata still has her funky uncky Eugenio corralled and is laying her cards on the proverbial poker table.  She's seen the report where the type of nefarious operation performed on her is discussed in glorious detail.  All she wants to know is who the heck gave them permission to do that to her.  Ewwy diverts and skirts asking if she really thinks him capable of harming her.  She is his favorite of them all and knows this.  Truly, she's been off her meds too long and needs to continue taking them.  He kisses her and hugs her as Viewerville has visions of a mafioso's last kiss to the condemned.

Imperio de Mentiras Lunes 12/14/20, Chapter 55: So Little Time

Time is everything. We can't buy it back or sell it and it always has the last word. – Dashiell Hammett

Leo looked at Christina with suspicion. She said “We're going to talk about Julia and Elisa, but first I want to talk about me.” He was not looking for a crash course on black widow spiders.

Imperio de Mentiras #54, 12/11/20: Elisa Copes, Ren Hopes, Fab Mopes, and Leo's a Dope

Leo and Elisa continue to marvel at the fantasyland their fairy godmother has created for them.

Leo: I'm fired! Let's run away!

Elisa: Nah, let's just pretend. I'm good at that.

They get down to some serious nose-bending. I hope Renata has put out some space heaters, because these two continue to generate no BTUs whatsoever.

Leo gives Elisa a promise ring and makes many promising promises. He seems blissfully unaware that nothing will change until she starts promising a few things, like telling the truth or maybe just paying attention. After all, he's been Steady Eddie all along. But the theme music starts kicking up, so it must be working.

Ren and Majo are watching the scene unfold while hanging out an upstairs window. God, this family is creepy. Couldn't they just screen the surveillance video after? Ren looks touched. Majo looks constipated.

*****

Leslie is crumpled in her bed like a wet dishrag while Tere and JL hover over her. She tearfully announces that the only thing that will make her better is her parents kissing and making up so they can all be one big dysfunctional family again. (Wait; what? Isn't that how she got so weird in the first place? Did they bring in a third set of writers while we weren't looking?) JL's phone keeps ringing, but he doesn't answer it.

*****

Video montage with dramatic strings of all the sad girls in their pajamas: Clara crying in her room, Adri texting an unresponsive JL, Tere and Leslie asleep in her single bed, Fer whimpering on the floor. Cut to Elisa and Leo, out of their pajamas and not sad at all. At least it's not the theme song again.

*****

Imperio de mentiras, #53, Wednesday, 12/09/20 Liar, liar, Rug on fire

Eww defends himself in front of Fab – "Dario is the big baddie who did everything, I was only trying to fix all his porquerias, protect Elisa and the Cantus. And if you go to the police, you will ruin everything."

One flew over the cuckoo’s nest

Majo and Clara manage to get into Mau’s room by saying they’re part of his family. He is obviously sedated, wide eyes open, looking like what nightmares are made of. Majo tells him that Renata send her to check up on him. A nurse shows up with big bottles of pills for Mau. She encourages Majo to keep talking to him, because even if he looks like a catatonic contortionist, he can hear her. She’s not to worry, they are taking good care of him, even if they are short staffed. Why so, Majo asks. Because the head nurse, Estela, has died and most of the staff is at her funeral. When Majo asks, the nurse explains that Estela was mugged and killed when trying to defend herself, but it was strange, because nothing was missing (rookie mistake, art traffickers must make terrible muggers). As the nurse is talking, Mauricio gets restless, his eyes threaten to jump out of his eye sockets. The nurse remembers that Majo used to come visit another patient, so Majo admits that she lied about being part of Mau’s family. It was her sister, Renata, who asked her to come visit. The nurse doesn’t mind, she knows the two were friends. Majo asks why he’s being sedated, was there an unwanted baby inside his belly, too? No, she doesn’t say that, but it would be an honest presumption, right? The nurse explains that he tried to run away, so they are keeping him drugged in order to avoid another crisis. And that is medicine at its finest.

Imperio de Mentiras 52, 12/8/20: Doin' The Jailhouse Rock 'Cause We're All Up To Our Necks In It

With an easily enraged Leonardo doing the questioning one on one in the interrogation room, Cobra, aka, Dario, manages to purposely push every single one of Leo's buttons.  He screams at Leo to hit him.  When Leo refuses, Cobra gives Leo a head butt that kicks his nemesis into high hostile gear.  Adriana and Mario have to race in to tear the two apart.  They manage to pull Leo off Cobra and out of the room.  Cobra gets his jollies threatening to sue Leo for police brutality.

At the Cantu manse, Majo asks Elisa what will happen to Cobra.  "--They keep him in jail while they put together a case against him."  "--You think that he's going to accuse you--Sorry.  Didn't mean to...."  They agree they've got to think of a legal strategy.  Majo's all for that. She encourages El to do whatever she's got to do, shady or not, to keep from going to jail.  El only asks Majo to help take care of Renatta since Mama is a lost cause. (Hell, so is Majo.  A perfect case of the blind leading the blind.)

Imperio de Mentiras Lunes 12/7/20, Chapter 51: The Fault, Dear Brutus

The fault is usually in so many lies people tell to themselves.Dashiell Hammett

Adriana took the call about Leo trapping El Cobra. She had to tell José Luis, who was in the same room. He looked confused as she said “Let's go.”

Majo had to get Renata to calm down so that she7 would not be locked up in the loony bin again, possibly forever this time. She led her away. When they arrived home they argued about what to do next. Renata insisted that they could not wait because of what could happen to Mauricio.

Imperio de Mentiras #50, 12/4: The Cocktail Party of Doom

Galeria Cantu

Majo and Dario snipe at each other like they just broke up at the junior prom, but Dario's way meaner and Majo walks away in tears. She calls Leo to tattle that Dar's breaking curfew, and Leo spills to Adri, who texts Elisa. (Boy, once this gang gets the lines of communication open, there's no stopping them. Has anyone even had a dead battery or been sent to voicemail? The next thing you know they'll be looking through their peepholes before they open the door!)

Majo heads straight for the bar, but she's barely into her fishbowl of plonk before she's confronted by a refreshingly lucid Renata, who tells her that won't solve any of her problems and offers her a smothering tall-sister hug instead. The advantage of this is that Majo is literally blinded, which puts her out of action for a while.

Depa Fer

We come in on Fab in mid-rant: "My dad is a mafioso and my brother is a psycho killer and you knew the whole time! Elisa is nice and you're a selfish liar!" Fer replies that she's not selfish; quite the contrary: "I'm the only one thinking about what's between the two of us." "What WAS between the two of us," Fab replies. "We're done." He looks like he just wet the bed.

Casa Victoria

Eu tells Vic he got all the original medical files off the nurse's phone. Vic is aghast: "You let her LEAVE?" (What? Does she have spare bedrooms to lock up grown women who aren't her daughters?) Eu assures her it's all taken care of; any problem can be solved with...um, money. Yeah, that's it.

She tells him they have to take care of Mau as well. Um, Vic? I don't think the two of you are using that phrase in quite the same way.

Adri reports to Leo that they found blood on the murder weapon and on the blood, they found Tere’s finger prints. To odd thing, however, is that the Harrison test resulted negative which indicates that Tere never fired a weapon. Leo responds that he will be getting a lawyer for Tere, and he will try to explain what happened to Leslie and Sara. Leo then tells Leslie that he has to leave to the precinct but Leslie wants to go with him to see her mother. Leo explains that he can’t take her and assures her that Tere was only detained and just has to give her statement. Leslie pleads that Leo tell her what is happening and Sara asks what JLouse is doing to help Tere. Leo hesitantly tells them that JLouse was the one who gave the order to detain Tere….this is going to be very difficult for JLouse, Tere was found in a motel with the man who was killed. When Leslie asks what her mother was doing in a hotel with a man, Leo of the boiled egg eyes, remains quiet. Like do you TELL her or SHOW her, yikes!

Imperio de mentiras, #48, Wednesday, 12/02/20 "Suddenly Sharp and not a moment too soon"

Fab asks Dario if Eww told him to kidnap Majo and get Elisa involved in money laundering. Dario mockingly congratulates his brother for being so sharp. Yes, this is the real world and their father is manipulating everyone that they know.

Fab realizes that all the money they have comes from dirty dealings. So what does Dario expect from him now, to turn evil, too? No, Dario wants his brother to use his new discovered hate in order to get his revenge. Fab asks details about his mother’s death. Dario knows that his mom was rich and didn’t truly know Eww at the beginning. By the time she realized his true nature, it was too late. She wanted to run away with Fab, but Eww locked her up. She became depressive and Ew watched her die slowly. Fab is shocked, how could he not know any of this, why didn’t his mom tell him what was going on? Dario bitterly explains that they were both going through the same thing, Piedad kept things hidden from him, too, but he realized the truth all the same. He saw the beatings, the screaming, he saw the monster in Eww. And once it was so bad, he had to take his mom to the hospital. That is when he promised himself that Eww will suffer just as much if not more.

Imperio de Mentiras 47, 12/01/20: The Truth Will Always Out Or The Great Escape...Not

Faithful ol' dawg that Leonardo is, he now admits to Elisa that he was wrong to set the federal accountants on her businesses just to get at the bottom of her Daddy's dirty dealin's.  He asks her to run away with him and escape the long arm of the law because he knows she'll have to be the one to answer once they find what they are sure to find.  She tells him no, she cannot ask him to sacrifice his life, his family, and (most of all) his career just to protect her and their luhhhhvvv.  (Wait, wait!  This is a definite 180.  Viewerville cannot stop rubbernecking the turn is so sudden.)  In fact, she finally blurts out all the money laundering that Cobra has forced her to do on the sly.  Yup.  Those perritos (auditors) will find this out.  "--So, now do you still want to run away with me?"  (This man has got to be as dumb as a box o' rocks; it begs the question: how can such an award-winning police pro prove to be such a pea brain putz????  Ah, the lower brain at work.....)

Imperio de Mentiras Lunes 11/30/20, Chapter 46: Family Affairs

Outline only tonight; it's been a rough day. – Dashiell Hammett

El Cobra – AKA Dario – taunted Fabricio about their blood connexion, also telling him that he needed to respect his older brother. Fabricio didn't accept this, which led to a comment about how “I am the dark side of our father; you are the 'nice' image he presents to the world”. He taunted Fabricio further about his mother's death and his failure to be on time for the funeral. He then went on about having done their father's dirty work “while you reaped the benefits of it.” Also that this had everything to do with his mother's death. “This is only the beginning,” he finished. “This will be revenge against our father.”

Imperio de Mentiras #45, Friday 11/27/20: Yakety-Yak and One Fat Slap

 Casa Cantu

Elisa squawks at Majo and Leo about their shrinkwrap-the-boyfriend plan, and they both tell her everything isn't about her. (Yay!) Majo also announces that she's acting like an estupida, which I guess could be considered an expert opinion.

Elisa doesn't trust Leo. Pot, kettle, etc. Vic tries to throw him off the property, but Elisa says that's her job. Majo tells Vic that Leo is her playdate, and to quit trying to run her life. After all, she can't keep her sedated all the time. (Um, isn't she doing a pretty good job of that herself?) This earns her a big fat slap. Vic looks regretful, but I think she just broke a nail.

Casa Adriana

JL materializes in Adri's living room, which is creepy enough, then starts telling her how much he loves her and doesn't want anything to happen to her, which is even creepier. He lets it slip that Tere asked for a divorce, and Adri suddenly wakes up from her boss-trance and realizes she doesn't want to be sloppy seconds. She tells him it's over. Out on the Patio, the spindly legs of the Adriana table begin to tremble.

Eliesa Dolittle tells Adriana that Cobra and her goons took everything from her, she wants her revenge. All of a sudden Elisa remembers that she’s upset with him, he’s investigating her galleries. Bohoo, tears come out, as Adriana tries to reason with her. At first she was afraid to tell the truth, then she fell in luuv, was afraid to lose him. But he left regardless, she only has her family now, she needs to protect them. Imperio de Mentiras #43, 11/24/20 Saving Your... Assets

Just Dust in the Wind

The nightmare is real.  Leonardo has come to do an audit of the galleries.  A very subdued Elisa requests a tete a tete with him.  Once alone,  Curley Locks, aka CFO Fabricio offers to accompany her but Elisa declines.

Meanwhile, Majo, whose level of self-esteem has plummeted recently to all-time lows is now about to let herself be used to mop Dario's floors.  She knocks at the door and asks if it's true Dario made a bargain with Elisa never to see her again in exchange for keeping away from El's family, and Majo in particular.  He reminds her it was she that left him and not the other way around.  What he felt for her once is now dead and the cadaver about to be buried.  He yells at her that he never lied about who he is and what he does and that she despises him for it.  The two of them are fire and water and he's realized that she's just not the right woman for him.  Besides, he's a businessman at heart; it's all just business to him.  Elisa promised to continue working for him without complaining if he left her alone.  Yep, it just was good business.

Imperio de Mentiras Lunes 11/23/20, Chapter 42: Poker Hands

Sometimes it's a good thing to sleeve the ace. – Dashiell Hammett

Elisa made Dario an offer he refused. To deal with her and her alone in exchange for revealing his boss, who was getting rich while he was doing the dirty work and taking all the risks. He said he reported to no one. Elisa said well and good, “but the only ones who would end up n prison are you and me.” Something in his face said she had hit home.

Imperio de Mentiras #41, Friday 11/20/20: Deals With Devils

Casa Cobra

JL tells Dario that the cops have their eye on both him and his papi. Now that he's large and in charge, he needs twice what they were paying Tapia to "buy more people." (Will he also get two bullets up the nostrils when they're tired of him? Don't think he's thought that far ahead.)

Dario agrees but says he has to take care of Clara and Leo. "My brother is untouchable," says JL. "And Clara and Nieves are under my protection." Dario tells him to do whatever he needs to do..."just get them offa me."

Poolhouse of Broken Hearts

Leo & Elisa, meanwhile, are still rehashing the previous night's argument. She is petulantly peeved that he can think there's anything between her and Fab in spite of the fact that he's stuck to her like lint on a sweater. Leo is direct: "He clearly has the hots for you. I'M the one who's the third wheel here."

He walks away. She calls him back, but he doesn't come. Not so well trained after all.

Imperio de mentiras, #40, Wednesday, 11/18/20 Dirty cops, painful breakups and geriatric love

Sorry this is a bit late, today my husband turns 35 - I had to run find him a present this morning, no easy task during lockdown (when in doubt, one bottle of single malt is always a good choice).

This was a good episode, things are happening, I hope my writing makes sense, not enough time to properly edit.

For the first time in her life Teresa is acting like a good host, saying thank you to Eliesa and Fab, and offering them something to drink. She has to be doing it on purpose, because Leo’s icy stare is anything but welcoming. He wants to pay back Fabricio the money spent on Leslie, but Fab won’t hear of it, which bothers Leo even more. Eliesa explains that everything that happened was Majo’s fault, Tere eventually goes upstairs to see the girls and Fab goes to the car.

Eliesa stays behind to talk to Leo, explain the situation. Even SHE can tell that he’s not OK. He wants to know why she didn't call - there was not enough time, why was Fab with her - just a coincidence, they were talking business. Eliesa has an answer for everything, Leo is not buying anything. Maybe she thinks it’s normal to do business at that time of night,  but he doesn’t (good point). And the guy wouldn’t even take his money, who does that? (another good point). He’s not all that modern, all that cool, he’s just a cop trying to do his job. Eliesa accuses him of being jealous again, Leo thinks that she’s only buying time before a definitive break up. She’s unhappy with everything that he does and honestly, he’s really starting to dislike the role he’s playing. (And the Patio peeps are holding their breath, hoping and praying that he doesn’t lose this new found rage). Eliesa says that the girls are OK, this is all that matters, and he can call her when he’s willing to listen and to understand blindly.

Imperio de Mentiras Lunes 11/16/20, Chapter 38: Choices In a Storm

Just the facts, my friends. The cold is coming in and I don't like typing with gloves on. – Dashiell Hammett

Leo asked José Luis about the mysterious money in the bank. Neither of them would have been able to save that much money from their salaries. José Luis evaded his questions and accused him of trying to sully his reputation on the eve of of his promotion. The tirade he had been on two days previously made a strong comeback. He tried playing the Brother card. Finally he told him to bring charges or get out of his sight.

Imperio de Mentiras #37, Friday 11/13/20: Money for Nothing and a Gun for Free

The Deconstruction Company

Elisa summons an eager Leo to her office, then flits around in her little hanky dress closing all the blinds. Alas for him, she plans to desecrate not the desk but his common sense. She repeats Majo's assertion that it was Cobra who ordered Marcelo's murder, then concludes that this lets Tio off the hook! Leo quickly progresses through the five stages of dealing with an airhead -- shock, disappointment, frustration, indulgence, and wishing he were somewhere else -- and finally comes up with an idea: Why don't we get Majo to lure him into a trap...?

Suddenly Fab blunders in without knocking and gives Leo the stink-eye. Elisa tries to get all girlboss and put him off until later, but he insists he has Very Important Papers. Leo takes his leave, and Elisa signs all the forms without reading them, because it's Telenovela Law. Fab assures her that transferring the galleries to an offshore shell company will totally solve all their problems. Then he sternly reminds her that Leo can't be trusted and she needs to slap him with a rolled-up newspaper every time he steps on the good carpet.

Majo and Clara's Glamping Chamber

Now that they're slumber-party besties, Majo needs Clara to do her a favor: get her a pistol. Que que que? Where's she going to hide it in those ratty clothes?

But Clara comes through, somehow persuading Leslie to nick one from her dad. Majo sticks it into her purse and makes a booty call to Dario. Gee, what could possibly go wrong?

Imperio de mentiras, #36, Thursday, 11/12/20 Victoria meets the creature from the black lagoon

Another Thursday Night production from RGV and Kirbo

The black sticky evil which is Dario and Ewww has finally ooozed all the way to Victoria. Like in some cheap horror movie where the living tar-like stuff comes in under doors, and through cracks and devours everything it touches.

Vic is still wettin’ her pants in the car with Scario. She asks “What are you going to do? Kill us? We don’t have what you want! Leave my family in peace!”

At Adri’s apartment, Leo and E-lies-a are cuddling and smooching. After they say their “I love yous” E-lies-a can’t stop thinking about how Leo keeps attacking her family. Leo asks her to just spit it out, he’s listening. E-lies-a wonders how Leo would feel if she turned the tables on him and started targeting his brother. Tapia was his brother’s boss, after all, and JL took direct orders from him…so JLuis might also be involved. Leo points out that his brother had several confrontations with his boss and he was even suspended. E-lies-a defends her uncle who has always been there for them…and saved her family’s company from bankruptcy (Puke! Puke! Barf!). Leo wonders if Ewww did it to cover up his illicit businesses, so E-lies-a turns it around once again and asks if his brother might have helped them to cover his own back. Leo reminds her that his bro risked his life to save her sister and wonders why she would want to associate him with Tapia. E-lies-a just wants Leo to understand her and put himself in her place. She sees that Leo is upset and points out that this is how he makes her feel when he attacks her family. Leo must think: Talk talk, you are thinking T-Mobile, I'm thinking Matress firm.

Imperio De Mentiras #34 11/10/2020: Assumption, Trepidation, and Some Serious Accusation

Leonardo is on an investigative roll.  He tells his mopey, doe-eyed Elisa straight out that he's not blaming anybody in particular at this point, but he's going to investigate the leads he has and let the chips fall where they may.  (Viewerville knows even if El refuses to accept it, that that must mean Tio Eugenio, especially where Sofia is concerned.)  In particular, Leo's going to be investigating Gilberto [Tapia], Jose Luis's boss.  He seems to be up to his neck in coverups these days, according to Leo.  And, he's been putting the brakes on every aspect of this case any chance he gets.  Tapia was the one who ordered Marcelo's death.  Why?  Well, because of all the money involved...lots of money...dirty money.  She fears for his safety.  He fears he'll never see her smiling and cheerful.  (Say, has she ever been cheerful or smiling since he's known her?)   He mentions now he's been getting the evil eye from Victoria and Fabricio since he arrived and so he'd better go before they cause a scene.  She pooches her mouth, even more, to re-emphasize there is absolutely nothing between her and the Curly-Locks Kid.  If there isn't, he surmises aloud, then why feel the need to bring it up?  Because you do, dude--every chance you get!

Imperio de Mentiras Lunes 11/9/20, Chapter 33: Witches' Brew

Please forgive that this is just the facts; no sleep for the last week. Maybe some booze will help. – Dashiell Hammett

Elisa told Leo about spending the night with Renata in her hospital room. He told her about Marcelo's death and the belief that he committed suicide. Further, that Eugenio took Sonia out of the hospital and that now there was no way of corroborating Marcelo's statements about Eugenio's possible involvement in Augusto's murder. Elisa still refused to believe that Eugenio could do this. She thought that he had taken Sonia home for her own benefit.

Imperio de Mentiras #32, Friday 11/6/20: Danger Phones

The Reclusorio of the Open Door

The jailhouse thugs stroll into Marcelo's cell with a present for him: FaceTime with his nearest and dearest, which in this case means Eugenio gets to threaten Sonia in front of him, and then Sonia gets to watch the thugs beat him up. Talk about a bad connection.

Eu tells him to retract his statement in the morning or things will get way worse, which Marcelo believes, because they always do.

Adriana's House of the Revolving Door

The Three Musketeers are lolling around discussing their completely unauthorized case, but Leo's clearly not into it. His two sidekicks urge him to call Elisa and patch things up, because love is...and he deserves...frankly I stopped paying attention at this point because I was too busy marveling over the fact that he was taking romantic advice from two people who have never had a successful date in their entire lives, with each other or anyone else. Anyway, he calls her, but she's not very receptive (probably because Fernanda is dribbling a steady stream of distrust into her guisqui.)

Victoria's Home for Wayward Girls

Vic makes a stately descent of the Staircase of Doom in a flattering and age-appropriate black & white dress that she will probably be allowed to wear for about two minutes before wardrobe sticks her back into the potbelly pants. (Why do they hate her? Because she got herself a real hair stylist?) She waxes nostalgic about how nice it is to see Elisa & Fer together, just like when they were little tykes. Then she gets maudlin about Augusto and asks Elisa to produce a greeting-card sentiment about their marriage, which she obligingly does.

But that's not enough. She pointedly asks Fernanda if she thinks her husband really loved her, or was he betraying her? Fernanda goes into a catatonic state and plays back a memory in which she demanded that Augusto leave his wife or no more cookies. Well, that puts a different complexion on things, doesn't it?
