Por Amar Sin Ley, 4/26/18 Chapter 38 Jueves: Entitlement

Chapter 38: Entitlement
I'm Christopher Mason. Divorce and death bring out both the best and the worst in people. It is often a litmus test for both virtues and sins. From some it brings sympathy and compassion and for others it only brings out their sense of Entitlement.
  • Marcia saw the dead body of her husband in a pool of blood after his suicide by gunshot. She became nearly hysterical with grief and needed to be held back by Roberto and Ricardo. Roberto got her out of the room, leaving Ricardo there. He knelt on the floor and moved toward the body of the godfather who had been a second father to him where he cried out in grief.

Maria explains that, when she received death threats in San Crispin, she went to go hide in Guatemala, which was were she was arrested for crimes against the government. She assumed it was the corporations they were fighting against, but the worst part was that drugs were planted on them, so they were imprisoned for a lot longer than expected. Mauricio thinks Fabian could’ve planted the drugs also and Maria explains that she’s trying to find out who exactly reported them, so they can compare notes. Mauricio wonders if Fabian could be hiding the proof of his deeds at home, since he couldn’t find anything in Logatoys, and Maria agrees that her whole arrest and release were weird.

Por Amar Sin Ley, 4/25/18 Chapter 37: The Case of the Hit and (Didn't) Run

Ay de mi, where is Christopher Mason tonight? Without his literary talent, this episode will have to be in the ever-dull court reporting style.

Part 1 of 2
Rob is handing Fanny's problem with Albert over to Gus. He has to explain to her, why. He's recently uncovered facts that demonstrate Al fooled him into believing the shooting was an accident but he really meant to kill Ramon. He feels guilty about allowing him to go free and can't help her himself because, well, he represented Al. Gus is up to speed and takes over. Fanny doesn't understand any of this.

After last night's convivial phone conversation Ric had with Ale, she returns the call in the morning. Her dimples light up her face, smiling through the admiration Ric lays on her. She promises they'll see each other when she gets back. He says he'll be waiting for her. Ale is happy with the anticipation of a reunion with Ric.

Papá a toda madre Wed. 4/25/18 Capítulo 70: Reality Bites--OR--Kika On a Roll

At Logatoys, Mauricio is having it out with Falcón. Mauricio asks him point blank if it was Fabián who had María put in jail. Falcón laughs him off. The loss of the company is really affecting him. Mauricio informs him: if Fabián had something to do with it, he will pay for it. Falcón says he will tell Fabián and asks him to leave. Mauricio makes a point of telling him that he cannot be threatened like Renée. No matter what Fabián does the cooperative will move on ahead. Still chuckling, Falcón decides if there is anything else Mauricio has to say then he really should write it all down in a notebook. A more serious Falcón then wishes him good luck in proving his accusations. Fabián is not as stupid as he is. Mauricio leaves telling Falcón to tell Fabián what he said.

At Jorge's, Jorge goes to talk to Lili in her bedroom. She has been looking at photos on her phone of her mother and the early Christmas they had with him or rather "Uncle Jorge". She asks who came up with the idea of "Uncle Jorge". Jorge remembers that he talked to her mother telling her that he had to see his children even if it could only be once a year. From that, her mother decided that they should invent "Uncle Jorge" so he could be with them. Lili reminds him that his visits were not enough. Jorge does not disagree but hopes that maybe someday she will understand the guilt he lives with. Jorge admits that when he sees everything that is going on now . . . with this "mistake", he blames himself for not being there. Lili gets upset. Her baby is not a "mistake" and she doesn't want it to be considered as such. Why cannot he try to understand her and walk in her shoes? He is trying . . . Lili does not agree. Even though they live together, he is still very "absent" and not just for her and Baldo but also for Valentina and Samuel.

Por Amar Sin Ley, 4/22/18 Chapter 35: Deceptive Appearances Now Perceived By The Truly Bereaved

    • While Rob is busy winning Alberto’s freedom for an accidental shooting, Elena and Leticia have a chat about Ricardo.  Ric the Brick is still staunchly rejecting Exlena to her dismay.  She is checking up on him ahead of time to see if he and Alejandra are still “keeping company.”  Leti says not that she can determine.  Both are pretty much keeping to themselves.  In fact she’s getting on well it would seem with Carlos as just recently in a firm meeting she stated he wants her to set up a Women’s Shelter and supportive foundation.

Hope springs eternal for Exlena who is thrilled to hear it, as it means that she’s got a chance at getting him to concede and return to her.  He’s too good a man and father for her and her kids,  aka topnotch husband material, to let go of.  She believes that Ric The Brick is capable of doing anything for her children, even forgiving her and giving her a second chance….eventually.  Leti, though, wonders why, with all the available proverbial finned finned and gilled vertebrates in the sea, why be obsessed with Ric?  Family picture or something more?  “--You only see him as father material.”  Well, if Leti had kids she’d understand, ok?  In fact, Exlena figures not only to get him to love her like before, but even more than what he felt before!  Hmmmmm.

Mauricio admits that he has been pushy but warns her that Fabian is not to be trusted, and Renee agrees, and reminds her that he only wants to hurt Anifer. Mauricio nods but doesn’t think it’s a good enough reason so Renee reminds him of all the obstacles in her way since she started the master’s program. She makes it clear that her plan is to postpone the program, for a bit, but Mauricio begs her not to do this for him. Renee shakes her head and confesses that this is the first time she’s in love and she’s not willing to give him up. Chapter 25: Priorities

Previously on D.F. Law:
  • Paula talked about how every good lawyer wants to work at Vega & Associates, but Carlos denied that on the grounds of philosophical differences. Paula nonetheless pointed out that it was lawyers from that firm who got him freed, which he agrees with and gives Alejandra credit that she perhaps did not earn. When he kissed Alejandra it was evident that she did not welcome it and wanted him to leave. He finally said he needed to go home and rest to have the energy to start working on his plans and said he would pick Alejandra up in the morning. She declined this offer, saying she needed to get an earlier start. He made a big deal instead of saying he loved her.... more than ever. She went upstairs and Paula turned to Carlos to make sure he understood that he had hurt her daughter badly. She told him he had to respect Alejandra's decision. He didn't understand so she spelled it out that her daughter had a lot of work rebuilding her life after what he had done. He said he had paid for this in many ways. She told him point blank that her priority is her daughter. He asked her to trust him, etc.

Papá a Toda Madre, Episode 58, 4/9/2018: Dead (Wo)Man Walking…and Talking…and Possibly Stalking… OR Night (Day) of the Living Dead

Alt Title: Chicken Soup for the BUSTED Soul!

At the Carbajal fortress (that can easily be invaded by a tribble), Renée explains to Noel that she grew up in a house that was her mother’s; and when her mother died, she thought it would be hers, but it turned out that the house is not under her name. When Noel tells her he doesn’t understand anything she is saying, he demands to know who the he** her mother is; so Renée blurts out, “Catalina Sanchez!” After Noel stumbles backwards and remains quiet, Renée questions why he remained quiet and if he knew her mother…
                                                                        Could it be?????
(So Renee, realizing this is going sideways fast, wishes she had brought Wookiee with her and makes small talk: So...you ever know Catalina Sanchez?) Noel tells her that she knows where the door is and not to get close. When Renée persists and asks if he knows Don Noel, Noel ( wonders if he should take out his saber but...) responds that if she doesn’t leave, he will call the police; so Renée apologizes and runs out. After she leaves, Noel uncovers his head and looks as if he saw a ghost. (Maybe the Ghost of Bunny Hopping Past? Wait, what the Dickens am I thinking? Or was he thinking, “May the Farce Be with You?”)

Por Amar Sin Ley, 4/6/18 Chapter 24: Carlos gets--out of jail, a photo op and a champagne lunch

Part 1 of 2
The Trial of the Century is Underway---or rather a hearing to determine whether Carlos has to remain in prison or get out on personal recognizance until the real trial. Suffice it to say that thanks to Leo and Rob's snooping around the hotel and finding the hotel emergency stairs near the room lacked security cameras; Carlos' casual demeanor upon leaving; his upcoming nuptials; Patricia not seeming frightened or concerned when room service arrived, and Juan's dogged determination to provide the toxicology report, Carlos is one step closer to temporary freedom. The toxicology report showed that Patricia, having taken sleeping pills which, Leo tells the judge, mixed with alcohol, could have caused her to choke on her own vomit. Sonia, the spiked-heeled public prosecutor indicates, indignantly, that there was no evidence of vomit anywhere, to which Leo chides her for not doing her homework because there was no pathology report. (CSI: Miami is shocked.) Leo feels triumphant.

Tono and Veronica go to Ernesto’s doctor. Tono doesn’t want to give his child medicine and suggests they try other methods. After a moment, he relents and agrees to give his child medicine, despite his reservations. The doctor asks them to trust him and then steps outside to answer a call. Once alone with Tono, Veronica begs him to please put their issues aside and focus on their children. Tono promises to make sure Ernesto takes all his pills and Veronica nods. She promises to be very mindful though and make sure he is doing what he promised.

Later, Tono goes to the pharmacy and gets the prescription filled. The pharmacist gives him a few bottles of pills but Tono thinks they’re too many for a small child. He opens one bottle, takes some pills out, and asks the pharmacists if he has any small, white mints. The pharmacist shows him a pack and Tono smiles as he shakes it.

Xmas Eve continues . . .

Nerón is entertaining Roberto this Xmas Eve. Roberto has come with gifts for everybody. Nerón leaves Flor and Robert alone to go get his gifts. They chit chat about about Nerón telling Robert to get a wife and maybe one with a child. Robert quietly expresses concern for Nerón’s health and asks Flor about it since Nerón seems to be talking about it a lot in the last couple of days. Flor looks concerned.

At Toño's parents, Christmas Eve is not too merry. Verónica reminds Toño that the only reason she is there is because of the kids and that the two of them are still separated. He gets sarcastic about what a sacrifice it must be for her to have to deal with all of his relatives. She makes it clear that is not the problem. Her problem is putting on a happy face so she does not ruin the children’s Xmas especially Neto's. They get into an argument about Neto and his medicine for his supposed ADD. Toño cannot understand how a doctor can see him only once and put him on medicine. Verónica explains that the doctor is an expert. It seems to her that Toño doesn’t take anything seriously. Toño argues it is not that. It is only that he has been on the internet . . . She scoffs at that. According to what he has read, the experts say that taking medication is the last option that should be considered. Before going with medication, you have to take a look at what is happening in the child's home, his environment.

Or Everyone Gets Hit In the Face

Mauricio thinks Fabian is sick because he used a child to further his plans. Fabian thought Mauricio hated kids, so it shouldn’t have been a big deal. Mauricio wants to know if Maria is actually dead or if Fabian made that up to, but Fabian confirms she’s dead and buried. Mauricio doesn’t believe him, as he’s lied to much and went alone with Juan Perez to Maria’s burial, but Fabian confirms the body he claimed was Maria’s and he only did it because Mauricio won’t let sleeping dogs lie. Mauricio can’t believe Fabian would’ve left Maria unclaimed, like a dog, but Fabian retorts that Mauricio didn’t even go to his own father’s burial, so he shouldn’t talk. Mauricio claims that that is another story and thinks Noel would die again if he saw what his son has become.

Renee is looking at the photo she found of all the old Logatoys employees when Rafael walks in and asks if she’s going to keep it. Renee is going to ask Mauricio but she’s sure he will let her keep it as a reminder of the way things were. After a moment, Renee realizes that her mother is looking at someone else, not the camera, and Rafael points at Noel and assumes she’s looking at this man. Renee doesn’t know him, only of him, and remembers when Angel told her that Catalina was very secretive, and he wished she loved him but never did. Renee suddenly gasps and tells Rafael that she knows who her father may be, but she can’t confirm that he is because she has no proof. Rafael offers to help, as the sooner she gets her house, the sooner they can buy it, but Renee is wary as the legal battle for her house may be tougher than she thought. She also reveals that she may have a brother and wonders how she will find out the truth. Rafael thinks her talk with Angel went well, so she could talk to her brother too, but Renee wonders if her search is worth it because she may find out things she never expected or wanted to find out.

Papá a Toda Madre, Episode 48, 3/26/2018: Children Say the Darndest Things OR A Golden Egg for R&R

Fabián asks Mau if he is feeling well; so Mau responds that it must be because he is excited about starting a new phase in the factory…with him. Mau then asks Fabián if he remembers how long they have been friends, so Fabián laughs and responds “All our lives; ever since we were born!” Mau replies, “Exactly. In fact, until Anifer showed up, I considered you my only living family.” When Fabián wonders why Mau is so nostalgic and asking so many questions, Mau responds that he doesn’t know; he has just realized that he trusts Fabián with so many favors…sometimes he thinks he takes advantage of him…like asking him to take care of Maria’s burial.  (A tiny little tinker bell jingles in Fabián’s serpentine brain.) After Mau thanks him, Fabián assures him that there is no need to thank him…he has always done it with all his heart (as he concentrates really hard to not allow his tail to rattle).
At Veronica’s house, Toño is cleaning the table when Veronica arrives and asks if the kids have gone to bed. When Toño responds that it has been quite some time since they went to bed, Veronica comments that she hardly saw them in the morning; so she is going to go peek in on them. Toño tells her not to wake them because it took him quite some time to get them to sleep; furthermore, he wants her to sit down so they can talk about that infamous “break” she wants to take. Veronica points out that he was the first to mention taking a break…and right now she is exhausted and isn’t up to anything, but she does want to tell him that she will be leaving on a job-related trip during the week-end…and she wants HER kids to go with her. As Toño emphasizes that they haven’t even started the “break’ and she is already saying “HER kids,” (Clue A, Tono) Tania listens through the door as they continue to argue, then walks back to her bed as Veronica tells Toño that she does not want to continue arguing and walks away.

Por Amar Sin Ley or L.A. Law's Twin

Back when we were playing Televisa Remake games (click the label “weekend” below for list) we didn't think of L.A. Law as a possibility. Obviously someone did because this series certainly feels like it. Most of the emsemble-cast characters have counterparts, there is a parade of clients some of whom are symbolic of social issues, and the relationships between the lawyers and their love interests will be the most active element of the series. Let's dive in:

Managing Partners

Alonso Vega and Leland MacKenzie are both mature men who are paternal figures. Both are law professors, virtually live at the firm, and take a personal interest in the lives of their staff.
